Watchlist

The Watchlist – Christian Benteke

As a result of Alex McLeish’s horrendously negative tactics last season, very few Villa players were taken seriously by Fantasy managers when crafting initial lineups this time round. Prices were subsequently downgraded and with the arrival of a more attack minded manager in Paul Lambert, plus the emergence of several young (and cheap) players, the Villains appeared to offer a rich seam of differential talent waiting to be mined. It’s taken a while for Lambert’s young lions to establish themselves this season, however, and as it stands that talent remains largely untapped; the acrobatic Brad Guzan in goal and the muscular Christian Benteke up front are the only players to accumulate more than a 3% FPL ownership to this point.

Four goals at Carrow Road in the Capital One cup and another three at Anfield has given us plenty of reason to take another look, and summer signing Benteke has been central to Villa’s resurgent run of form. In many ways, the Belgian is a symbol of the changes taking place at Villa Park – young, energetic and strong, the comparison with forlorn and fallen team-mate Darren Bent is striking. Benteke’s performance at Anfield displayed many of the qualities missing in the England international; he won aerial duels all over the pitch, scored a powerful goal from distance, set up another with a cheeky bit of skill and capped it off by barging his way into the box to execute a cool finish. If he was English, the media would have eaten it up.

We’ve already covered Benteke once this season, back in November he made significant strides: enough to promote him in our thoughts. He duly delivered three goals an assist and six bonus points since that article but, with a forthcoming schedule that screams further returns, Benteke warrants renewed attention.

Three home games in the next four against Tottenham, Wigan and Southampton should provide plenty of chances for Benteke to boost his burgeoning reputation further. While Villa’s form could now be fragile having just taken a pounding at Chelsea, Lambert is backing his side to show their spirit and bounce back in the Boxing Day meeting with Spurs. Considering that he has scored or assisted eight of Villa’s 13 league goals so far this term, Benteke will surely be the key figure on show against Andre Villas-Boas’ side and, with a price tag of 6.7 in the FPL and just 7.5 in the Sky Sports game, there are few obstacles to investment.

An ownership of just over 3%, with the ability to free up funds for heavy midfield acquisitions, promotes the appeal and could mean that Poirot isn’t the only Belgian that comforts us over Christmas; it’s not certain that Benteke will be murdering defences but he’s surely a prime suspect.

Merry Christmas all, does anyone think RVP will be rested next game?A bit conscious of (c) him only for him to star as a cameo?

    Also:

    A) sell Suarez for who?

    B) Caulker is he nailed on now?

      RVP ...

Michu @ RDG on Boxing Day - they'll be looking to continue their solidity and 'get what they deserve' ... Michu = 7 or 8 points.

RVP home vs. new - his buddy Krul in goal, needing goals to avoid dropping more points to City ... RVP = 9 or 10 points.

Hmm, well, actually when I look at it, 5/7 ahead of me have Michu and only 4/7 have RVP, so I guess there is more chance to make up ground with RVP, but I just have fear of Michu feasting on Reading and me missing out. Newcastle defense not that great either, though, I guess.

If Van P starts then I think home advantage swings it towards him. Reading by all reports really tightened up against City. Also Swansea have only lost to MANU, ARS and SPURS this season at home and have beaten Everton at home already this season too. Therefore it might not be that easy for Michu away from home as it is for Van P at home to Newc

Cheers! Hopefully we won't drop like a stone as per usual after Christmas.

I just know I'll regret not having RVP (c) against a Newcastle side that don't have Tiote and might not be able to keep the ball out of their own half.

Yeah, Tiote absence painful for Newcastle. It's either RVP or Michu, I think, and as I spend a bit more time thinking and looking at the leaders in my league, I think RVP might be the way to go. You know what they say, always captain RVP.... (except when they are wrong)

Yeah, I can see Liverpool scoring at Stoke for some reason so inclined to go for Schwarzer, especially as Southampton at home should be the game they recover their form.

Just a couple of quick boxing day questions:

    1) Suarez or Defoe? (already playing Bale)
    2) Huth or McAuley?

Defoe and McAuley. I'd probably play Suarez as well if I could. No point having a 10 million player if he is bench fodder

Suarez, as it spreads risk in case of Spurs failure. Also a bit dear to leave on bench. Huth as poses more of a goal threat.

Could you not play both Suarez and Bale?

The thing about Michu is his 50% ownership, If you're trying to catch up some places he is no differential to most of the ppl above you. Pienaar could get you a better green arrow.

it's the $64,000,000 question and one which I have pondered. I am going against the grain, predicting low scoring games for both Spurs & City. I'll probably stick.

    Captain dilemma:
    1. Rooney - could go mental vs tioteless Newcastle, risk : benched and 1 pt cameo
    2. Michu - free scoring, risk: reading fresh new found hobby in the previous match vs mcity (parking the bus)
    3. Torres/Mata - rested , team on the roll frm 8-0 thrashing, Torres could go wild vs Norwich , risk: rotation
    4. Bale- playing against Villa who just got drubbed , risk: team bouncing back frm drubbing with new found hobby (see reading) - parking the bus.

    Help. Thanks. Happy Boxing Day.
