Chris Hughton continued to add to the Norwich first-team squad yesterday after
signing Nathan Redmond on a four-year deal from Birmingham City. The 19-year-old makes his way Carrow Road in a deal believed to be around ยฃ3m and is the Canariesโ€™ second new face of the summer, following the arrival of Ricky Van Wolfswinkel from Sporting Lisbon.

Having been handed his league debut by the former Blues boss back in 2010, the highly-rated teenager โ€“ who was also linked with a move to Swansea โ€“ was delighted to be reunited with Hughton once again…

“I’d probably say I’ve played some of my best football under him so far. He was very influential on my career at Birmingham. He gave me the chance to play and the chance to express myself every time that I stepped on to the field and I feel like on the bigger stage he’ll do exactly the same thing.”

The History

During his debut season, Redmond was tentatively eased into action at St Andrews. Making 19 of his 24 appearances from the bench, he grabbed five goals and a pair of assists as Hughton guided the midlands outfit to the Championship play-offs. Last time out, the youngster managed 22 starts and 16 sub appearances, returning a couple of goals and six assists under new boss Lee Clark. On the international stage, Redmond has represented England at every level from Under 16 to Under 21, producing four goals from 38 games.

The Prospects

Speaking to the clubโ€™s official website upon completion of the deal, Hughton admitted Redmondโ€™s versatility is likely to be key over the season ahead. Predominantly right-footed, he also offers an option as an inverted winger on the opposite flank and could be utilised in โ€œthe holeโ€ in the Canaries default 4-4-1-1 formation:

“Nathan is a young and exciting player that I had the pleasure of working with at Birmingham. He’s someone we can bring in to the forward areas and primarily has played on either wing in his career so far, but can also play off the front. He’s very keen to develop his own game, he’s one of these lads that likes to be on the training pitch and is usually one of the last ones off the training pitch. I’m sure the move won’t phase him but this is still a part of his development and one he is very much looking forward to.”

With Van Wolfswinkel looking set to be handed the lone forward role and Robert Snodgrass nailing down the right wing berth, Redmond should offer competition to Anthony Pilkington on the left and Wes Hoolahan as the most advanced midfielder behind Van Wolfswinkel. Bearing in mind his side notched just 41 times last time round, Hughton is in dire need of extra firepower in midfield โ€“ Hoolahan scored three times from 33 appearances (28 starts), while Pilkington was just a little more prolific with five strikes in 25 starts.

In terms of game time, much may also depend on whether the Canaries manage to capture summer target Ola Toivonen โ€“ the Swede would tuck in behind Van Wolfswinkel if he arrives from PSV Eindhoven, forcing Redmond to rely more on appearances from the bench unless he forces Pilkington down the pecking order on the left. Likely to be classified as a midfielder across the Fantasy games, Redmond should come in around 5.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) โ€“ potentially, he could be a decent mid-price option though concerns remain as to whether he will nail down a regular role or be tentatively eased into the first-team fold, with appearances as an impact sub late on in games either out wide or through the middle if Norwich move to two up front mid-match.

Hughtonโ€™s line-ups over pre-season should shed more light on the situation but with home games against Everton, Southampton and Villa in the first five Gameweeks, in addition to a trip to promoted Hull, the Canaries certainly have the platform to be quick off the mark. Whether Redmond can offer us a viable alternative to Snodgrass over those matches or, indeed, the season ahead is perhaps debatable, with the Scot remaining the most likely source of points in Hughton’s midfield.

They're British, of course they will cheer for the home guy. They applauded Janowicz when he made shots worthy of applauding, but they backed their man

But the difference in what they applauded for was ridiculous. Tennis is not supposed to be about supporting one man and effectively jeering the other player.. No way he would of won without the crowd.

Went out with a whimper at the end. Murray turned it up a notch at 4-1 down and Janowicz just had no answer.

For all the talk of his big serve, Janowicz hit 9 Aces, Murray hit 21

The only one of the top 5 or 6 clubs that don't seem well represented here are City. This is about the only place I haven't seen overly-opinionated Pool fans but being a Gooner I probably just don't notice them so much. In fact, the only two posters I've seen that I'd really describe as ridiculous - 1 Chelsea, 1Arsenal.

In fairness, there's some highly respectable 'Poolies here, too ... 4vets and RCA spring first to mind.

Too bad HC couldn't place a club emblem by each of our names ... to save me the time in researching their FPL pages to discover their loyalties.

Yeah it's a strange one, the United fans here are probably the most civil of any club. Some of my fellow Chelsea fans can be outright embarrassing, including an outrageous lack of knowledge about the team/players sometimes.

I think he's pretty good, especially considering his age, he can only get better playing at a club like Utd...if he gets game time.

I think with Moyes might loan him out for a season as his development ns most important and a season in the PL playing regularly is more beneficial than a squad role.

Hard to tell until Moyes has a chance to see him during pre season though.

on fpl opening, it opened on the 19th this month last yr, player prices the 18th.

They had problems with it last yr so it was put back abit.

I think because of last yrs problems they've started working on it earlier this yr, especially since I think there may be changes to how the Bpts work and other things they may add.

I have a strange feeling it will be on the 12th this month if it doesn't get pushed back again.

Home crowd has been live for a while now and I was wondering what people thought of the new format.

For me, it has completely changed the way I use the site. Previously, I would spend a lot of time reading through page after page looking for the little nuggets of insight. This was a time drain, but along the way I picked up on the posters personalities, individuals traits and the banter between little groups of posters. At times, this was very funny and at others very dull. If I wanted some serious info, I would normally review the dead zone.

Now, I just dip in every now day or so check out the hot topics and stickies - which to be fair is the information I want to read. To be honest, I am a self confessed lurker and have been around these parts for over 3 years and have seen whole groups come and go. But, I do feel that because I can access the information I predominantly come to read easily - I seem to miss all the banter.

That said, the new format is fantastic and means that I spend less time on the crap and I can focus on interesting and informative posts.

Sorry, I didn't intend to ramble - but I would be interested to hear people's views.

There is a hot topics tab by the recent comments box.

I think the idea is that hot topics are to be discussed over a number of hours/days rather than being lost as soon as a new page comes whereas stickies are for useful info like official confirmations on transfers.

The new format's good, moderation can be a bit heavy but its better than the chaos that sometimes broke out before.

I have a look at the hot topics I miss and do the occasional up/downvoting but it hasn't massively changed how I use the site. I guess that's because I'm on here too often.

I really am a regular (lurker) and spend big chunk of time here. Just a little less recently. It could just be close season, but I do remember spending more time here last summer.

It's funny really, I recognise all you guys but you have no idea who I am - I should really get involved more. But, there is a little more pressure now to come up with interesting relevant posts as someone may down vote you.

There really isn't any pressure. Just look at recent pages, its the same sort of stuff as always.

There has been an increase in long statistical posts but that used to happen to an extent in preseason anyway.

Now you point it out. Of course I can always use the site the way I always did. This just provides an alternative way to the access the wealth of information from the community. It really is a very clever yet simple bit of added functionality.

Actually, it is amazing how Mark and co. have driven this site forward since I first started visiting. Good job.
