Scout Report – Gerard Deulofeu

Everton boss Roberto Martinez continued to strengthen his first-team squad last week by signing up Barcelona youngster Gerard Deulofeu on a season-long loan deal. The highly-rated 19-year-old is the fourth player to move to the Merseysiders since Martinez’s installation and follows former Wigan trio Arouna Kone, Antolin Alcaraz and Joel Robles to the club.

After completing the deal last Wednesday, Martinez – in an interview with the Toffees’ official website – spoke of his admiration for the new recruit:

“Gerard is a real diamond of Spanish football and a boy with incredible footballing talent and I am delighted that he has chosen to take the next step of his career with Everton. He is a young man with a lot of potential to be a real star and the Everton family is the perfect environment for him to progress. The experience that we have in our dressing room will help him in his development and he will bring a completely different penetrating approach to our group. We understand a lot of other top clubs around Europe were interested in Gerard so it is fantastic he has joined us.”

The History

A prodigious talent, Deulofeu joined Barcelona’s youth academy at just nine years of age. Handed his debut for the Barcelona B side at the end of 2010/11, he became a regular the following year and notched nine times in 34 appearances. Last term saw a marked improvement in his attacking output, however; Deulofeu produced 18 goals and nine assists from 33 games, though he’s been tentatively eased into the first-team fold so far, with just a single La Liga appearance in each of the last two seasons. Nevertheless, the Spanish giants seem to have real faith in his abilities and handed Deulofeu a new four-year contract back in May.

On the international stage, he’s featured for Spain at every level from Under 16 to Under 21 a total of 56 times and found the net on 18 occasions. Part of the Spain side which finished runners-up in the Under 17 European Football Championships in 2010, Deulofeu then helped steer his country to back-to-back Under 19 European Football Championships in 2011 and 2012, picking up a Golden Player award for his performances in the latter tournament.

The Prospects

Deulofeu’s arrival adds further weight to the idea that Martinez is set to roll out a 3-4-3 formation in his debut season at Goodison. With Steven Pienaar and Kevin Mirallas looking in pole position for a spot on the left and right of the front three respectively, the new boy – by his own admission – is capable of playing on either flank for the Toffees.

As can be expected of any La Masia product, Deulofeu possesses superb technique and vision, with an ability to take on defenders in one-on-one situations capable of undoing of many a backline. With virtually no experience of first-team football, though, it’s likely he’ll be eased into the fold over the first couple of months – a few sub appearances and a handful of Capital One Cup starts seem on the cards, though there’s no doubt that he has the ability to nail down a regular berth further down the line.

Fantasy managers will be cautious to begin with, though. Martinez is expected to afford his new charge the time to adapt to the rigours of the Premier League, though at five foot eleven, Deulofeu won’t be too overwhelmed by the physicality of England’s top-flight – plying his trade in a possession-based 3-4-3 should also ensure the transition is a little easier for the teenager.

Yet to be listed in the Sun Dream Team game, Deulofeu is a forward in the Sky Sports game and may well be classified as a striker in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game. With Mirallas expected to come in as a midfielder in the latter game, though, Deulofeu is likely to be given a wide berth to begin with as squads are assembled over the next couple of weeks.

Whether he can offer us the option of a cheaper alternative depends on Martinez’s intentions over his game time but there is no doubt Deulofeu is a real class act. It may just take couple of star displays off the bench or in the cup to persuade Martinez he’s worthy of a regular role in the Toffees first-team and potentially elevate the young Spaniard onto Fantasy radars.

What are your predictions for the top and bottom three in the Premier
    League for 2013/14?

Can Manchester United retain their title? Will Chelsea, Manchester
City and Arsenal be able to take their crown?

And at the bottom; will the newly promoted sides all fall back into

      1. Chelsea - the Mourinho effect, excellent squad, and deep pockets. Will be astounded if they don't sign a big striker, so the assumption is that they do.
      2. Arsenal or Spurs - Entirely dependent on the center forward they sign, I feel the rest of their squads are excellent.
      3. Manchester Utd - I think it'll be extremely close between them and 2nd place. Moyes is no Ferguson and it would be unfair to expect the new manager to take over the reigns without a bedding in period. I'm also expecting RVP to spend some time injured this season.

18.Stoke - will be pipped by Cardiff.
      19. Palace - will struggle to adapt to The Premier League and I expect a slump towards the tail end of the season.
      20. Hull - the Derby of 13/14

if ,as probable ,baines goes oviedo fits in -DM should have given him many more chances(the myth of DM gives yooff a chance),if fellaini goes RM is stuffed for a replacement currently but will get money-gibson,naismith,vic,osman=scrapheap and barkley's not up to it

I´m thinking Miralas on the left (uness he and Deulofeu play together) and Coleman gets the hot urine treatment...and don´t forget Ross Barkley, who I am sure will win over Martinez.

some bets that I am considering - yay or nay:

    Chelsea 23/10 premier league
    Southampton 7/5 top ten finish
    Swansea 8/5 top ten finish
    Fulham 7/1 relegation
    Stoke 3/1 relegation
Sturridge 16/1 top goalscorer (four places each way)

Bony hasn't been added to the game yet EboueSS. I assume he'll come in a little pricier, around 9m a la RVW.

Forgot that RVW was 2 millions more expensive. I'm edging towards Kone, because I have no idea how Altidore will fit in at Sunderland. Main man? or Second striker?

Fell into the FPL early transfers. Not needed for Metro as no price changes.
2 in some 3 in the others. All declared injured the following day.
I had to use all my other transfers to get them out again. Wasted opportunity to improve my teams early on.

I won't be doing that this year. or missing deadlines. Dedication or death. 😉

Lots of talk about who will win the league next season and the potential of which new signings will help that along, but what about existing younger established players ?...Who do you think is ready for the next step up in their respective teams ?...I'm going for Ox and Wilshire to do what Walcott did last season for Arsenal and step it up to their full potential....Looks very tidy to me...

Agreed. All chamberlain needs is regular game time, and jack just needs to keep injury free and relax whilst on the pitch. I also think Henderson will step it up

Yeah but somehow...and this is just in my minds eye...I can see that Moyes might fancy Jones's style of play over a lot of the other options at United...No foundation to that, he just seems right for Moyes to me...

Phil Jones has a tremendous amount of potential, if he were to get regular starts (in any position) under Moyes he could develop considerably as a player over the next season.

Caulker impressed me when he played; much also depends on his game time this season.

      (re-post from an earlier comment)

Good passer with technical ability, and still very young. Can play center midfield and attacking midfield, but he's quite defensively minded at the same time. Still yet to develop as a player; I wouldn't be surprised if he became a defender in a few years time. Think he had trouble with injuries too. Good signing for Palace if he plays regularly.

Moyes, Pellegrini, Mourinho, Martinez, Hughes, Di Canio

Who is the most likely to mess about with players we currently regard as established? I'm very wary of picking players from teams that have new managers as we have no way to know who they'll rate.

My plan for these sides is to only take players who were nailed on before and also to avoid any position where a new arrival has joined. Di Canio included as its his first transfer window.

I think Jose and Moyes will mostly stick with the regulars we expect, but Hughes always tries to prove a point and I think Martinez will too.

All of them have quite distinct managerial and tactical styles and quite different from their predecessors. I include Moyes in this, because regardless of the alleged similarities between him and Alex Ferguson, the former has yet to win a trophy while the latter is arguably one of the greatest managers of all time.

I think Martinez is likely to change things around the most tactically, due to his favoured 3-4-3 system. Mark Hughes has a reputation that precedes him, and I'd expect him to overcompensate for this while at Stoke - especially as he plans on moving away from the style of football they played with before.

        Agree with most of this.
Hughes will no doubt try to force them to go from a rugby side to playing proper football overnight and it will be his downfall. No one is safe with him in charge.
Martinez will be very likely to change the formation too. But at least with him, we can have a go at filling in the safe bets. Jagielka, Fellaini, Baines should still be safe. Think Fellaini might be poor value this year though as his price will go up and he will play deeper.
Moyes never done anything dramatic. Always a solid set up with no real flare. Direct play often but not long ball. Many ways that is similar to United we know.

Well Sunderlands team is going to be completely different anyway so....the goalkeeper celection is unclear at the moment. O'Shea is prob the only sure defender top start as a lot of new ones have come in and the likes of Bramble, Killgallon and Rose have left.Bardsley and Colback on way out too... Gardner is unlikely to continue at right back with the incoming of Peruzzi soon. Brown is fit again and in full training so he becomes an option again.

In midfield Johnson and Giaccherini look to be the only certain starters as a lot of new faces here too...hard to predict where he is gonna fit in Sess as it looks like he'll go 4-4-2 with Fletcher and Altidore up front.

In general though I think the situation will be become pretty clear by the time the season starts and I imagine he's team will be fairly settled after that...
