In Development – KPI Tables – Preview Movie

The latest addition to our members area is almost ready to go live. The “Key Performance Indicator” tables or “KPI” tables for short, are designed to use a series of key stats to allow our members to track form or change in performance in players.

For a while now we’ve been looking for a method of using our data to enable our members to assess player form – or at least track some key statistics that can be identified as indicators of form that may influence future Fantasy Football output, whilst also going some way to explain a recent rise or decline.

Firstly, we created tables that track the frequency of key stats or match events which indicate player performance such as “Minutes per shot on target” or “Minutes per touch in the box”. We’ve also included defensive indicators so that users who play Fantasy games where defensive actions come into play – (like Sky Sports and Play On) – can get further guidance from the tables. Indeed, stats such as “Minutes per Block” and “Minutes per Clearance” will immediately help those looking to identify defenders who are set to fare well in the new Fantasy Premier League bonus system.

All these statistics are useful in themselves when you consider that you can sort on any stat and slice the data by a Gameweek range or by home and away matches. However, the key ingredient we’ve added is the ability to create a second comparison table in the background and view tabular results that track the percentage change between the two tables. In this way, we can begin to get values that indicate form or perhaps a change in role and position. What you’ll get are results such as…

“Michu’s frequency of shots in the box increased by 23% when he played at home”

or even…

“Michu’s frequency of shots on target reduced by 38% over the final eight Gameweeks compared to the Gameweeks 1-30.”

These tables and this ability to compare frequency data can be used in a multitude of ways in order to find trends and provide quantitative data on queries such as:

  • Which players improved the most for the key indicators from the 2011/12 season?
  • Which players suffered the biggest decline in the key indicators away from home compared to home matches?
  • Just how much did Juan Mata decline in the key attacking indicators over the last eight Gameweeks compared to the rest of his season?
  • Which of the Chelsea midfield showed improvement over the same window?
  • How was Robin Van Persie’s key indicators affected by Wayne Rooney’s omission from United’s lineup?

Our members will be able to use the numbers produced to help them assess how a change in position affected a player, or even just to study which players, over the “last four Gameweeks”, have improved the most over the key indicators, since last season or earlier in the year. From now on, when we think Michu has dropped off in form, we can check and get percentage values for key stats to assess whether this is really the case and, at the same time, assess if any of his team-mates have benefited.

We’ll be using the KPI tables to generate new members articles and to add further analysis to our regular members articles. We’ll be rolling out our first members article, inspired by the new KPI data, later this week to help guide your initial squad selection.

For now, take a look at the preview movie below to see the tables in action. We hope to have the KPI tables available in our Members Area later this week.

    De Gea, Davis
    Azpilicueta, Coleman, Collins, Clyne, Turner
    Hazard, Silva, Mirallas, Redmond, Wanyama
    RVP, Benteke, Bent/JRod

If I get JRod over Bent, Kaboul will be one of the defenders over a 4.5

Anyone got any suggestions for the team, not really happy with it atm

      Don't like:

Redmond (not guaranteed starter - Pilkington still there)
      Wanyama (defensive mid)
Benteke (expensive plus Villa fixtures. He's not at Spurs yet!)
Same with Bent - not moved yet.
No Bale. More important than RVP due to fixtures imo

Have there been any stand out players for the PL teams in pre-season so far? Any players that have delivered over a couple or a few games?

I've only seen the Preston vs. Liverpool.

Gotta be honest, Liverpool looked sharp and very fit. Loads of players impressed, all be it against a poor Preston seriously of the pace, HOWEVER, this time last preseason, Liverpool were nowhere near as fit as this and this is only the first preseason game. The season could start tomorrow and they'd look alright as they are. So this could be a good thing for Liverpool coverage to begin with. Coutinho looked a million miles ahead of anybody else on the pitch, Agger, Johnson looked rested and rejuvenated, Toure was solid, Alberto looked promising, Ibe, Sterling was brilliant and has been in training from what I've seen and Aspas looked tidy and capable of scoring and assisting.

I agree. I'm mainly looking at players and teams fit and ready to go now if it was the case. Liverpool looked in tip-top condition.

I read on here Sessegnon scored 5 in a game?

Is that some kind of joke?

I know Swansea beat some team 10-0

Have there been any players "on form" and scored over a few games? (if they've played a few games)

Yep I think Liverpool will be much much stronger this year. Far more depth in the squad with decent cover in all positions. Need another Striker though IMO. Sturridge is class, but assuming Suarez leaves then they are light upfront and Aspas didnt exactly set La Liga alight, but who knows. He could be good!

If anyone is looking for a cheap attacking rotation pair then imo the best you can find from GW1 is Ruiz & Brunt for a total of £11.5m, great fixtures until GW 8.

Kacaniklic & Rodriguez come £0.5m cheaper but have no Home/Away rotation.

Any other cheap attacking rotation pairs worth considering?

I think the hardest position to choose this year is the 3 forwards. Last year it was easy, RVP and Suarez and one mid-priced forward with good fixtures or form. This year there isn't many big hitters I would pick:

RVP- In my opinion he isn't worth the money. I say that every year and still get him but 14 million is a bit much. If you look at midfield he is 2 million more than bale, 4.5 million more than Walcott/Hazard and 8 million more than Ramirez/snodgrass etc... up front there is plenty of good mid price that come in around 7 million less than RVP (berba, aspas, lambert, carroll, bony) All these players are able to score good points and are much cheaper than RVP. A new manager could also effect RVPs scoring.
Suarez- Suspended at the start and that's if he's still with Liverpool which I don't think he will. So that makes him out of the question too.
Aguero- the only big forward I see any potential in but with a new manager and always going to be rotated you will have to wait and see how well he does this season.
Rooney- Another player more than likely going elsewhere. Even if he stays he might not start and man utd under a new manager mightn't be as good this year.
Benteke- Big jump in price. If he's at villa he isn't worth the money/ spurs and he could be a good option.

Mid price strikers could be the way to go but I don't know who to pick from them either:

Berba- Not a great season last year. Fulham don't score many goals.
Lambert- Getting older and I think he could be rotated. Good option but Southampton midfielders are cheaper. JRod is cheaper too
Carroll- Will he have a good or bad season, well have to wait and see
Aspas/Kone/ VW/Bony- All new so they will have to settle in at the start. Don't know much about aspas/bony or VW so I can't comment on them. Kone could be rotated at Everton and I can see Everton having a bad season without moyes.

All this makes me think that I'm going to go big in midfield. Bale, hazard,Walcott,Michu, silva, miralles etc are all good options in midfield. 4 of them and Brady/Koren and then 3 mid priced forwards is what I'm thinking.

I dont do many long posts on her so Any suggestions/comments would be great 😀

The only problem I see with your plan is that you'll be relying on captaining Bale a lot.. which may of course not be such a bad thing. Could do with an Aguero / RVP in there alongside I reckon. I just never feel as confident captaining a Michu / Walcott.

Yeah I'm struggling with strikers at the moment, midfield currently looks the most fruitful area (although that will no doubt change multiple times over the season). I am, however, going with Aguero. I tipped him for the golden boot last season and was obviously hugely disappointed, but he's a class act, and I think City should score bagfuls under Pellegrini.

My front 8 at the moment is:
        Bale/Walcott/Hazard/Mirallas/Thomas
        Aguero/RvW/Gayle

I think there's a bit of creative memory going on there with regards to last season 😀 No-one started with Suarez (he didn't do very much until his hattie against Norwich) and plenty started without RVP too.

Sorry, I don't mean I disagree with the main thrust of your argument. I don't.

I just disagree with your second line: "Last year it was easy, RVP and Suarez and one mid-priced forward with good fixtures or form." That just wasn't the case at all until around GW10 or so.

Totally agree. I just spent 20 minutes on a first draft and I find I'm talking myself into Lukaku/Giroud.

I'm actually fairly high on Berbs (Nothing wrong with 15 goals), I have him earmarked as my Lukaku replacement when he plays 20 minutes in the first two games for Chelsea...

£9m for a player from a side of that calibre (all due respect to Swansea) is always though to justify.

We've had it before with players going off the boil or struggling to live up to the new [FPL] expectation. Not to say he won't do well, but you want to get a good score of points per million spent on players you aren't necessarily going to captain very often (if at all).

Martin Olsson: OOP or OTB? (Out of Position or On The Bench)

I'd be surprised to see Javier Garrido getting the hook at LB from Chris Hughton. He did a good job last season and was signed permanently because of it. So will Martin Olsson become nothing but filler or doe we think he stands a chance of a wide berth a little further up field? He's done it many times before for Blackburn.

I personally think Toure will start even if we sign another defender.

Rodgers has signed him on a free, mainly for leadership at the back. Which when we didnt have it last season, was all over the place. Carragher being as old as he was, added so much security. So I personally think Toure is nailed on, along with Agger, Johnson and Enrique and at £5.0m one of the best defenders in the game and a cheaper way into Liverpool defence. He will rise, because Liverpool are tight defensively. I'm hoping he can get a couple of goals aswell. Toure has already been pushed in with Gerrard as "elder statesman".....he has basically replaced Carragher. IMO I think it will be on of the signings of the summer, especially on a free. Wouldn't be surprised in the slightest if they make him vice captain.

There seems to be a lot more fairly priced players in this years game, cheaper defenders at top 6 clubs, cheap mids/strikers that did well last year (snoddy, Berba, lambert) new potential oops (coleman, bellamy, mirallas). As soon as we see starters for the first games of the season and get on a few price rises I think that the chances of having a very strong balanced team early on are good ie if aspas nails down a spot, or lukaku at chelski. The only real exception is RVP, it may be a race to get enough value for a strong team that RVP can be in without destroying part of it! There's also the marquee signings that are imminent for the top 4 clubs. That could throw a spanner in the works. A good thing is that with more options the variety of teams should be greater, at least at the start!

This looks amazing and fair play to the lads but it's got me wondering.

Are we in danger of reaching saturation point with stats, spreadsheets, analysis etc. I think I'm just paring back to watching games, checking a few vitals and looking at the ticker this yr. It's already beginning to feel like work and the season hasn't even started.

I offer a very contradictory view in that I think access to the stats is a very important thing...

But I also pretty much completely ignore them. I prefer to manage on my own accord, rightly or wrongly -more often the latter.

Yeah maybe I should have just stated a personal feeling than asking opinion.

I agree that they're important and really that's what this site is for. But for me, espically last yr, I was giving myself a headache with all the available info. For my own benefit of enjoying the game I'm just going back to nature this season. Might not be good for OR but I know my minileague rivals don't go into that much detail so I'm just gonna play it that way.

          Nature is good.

I could never argue against it. I think access to information is vital, because knowledge is power and all that bollocks...

But I "loathe" the idea to just follow the numbers. It's so emotionless and, only in my opinion, pretty dull. I would have never gone two hundred weeks without Robin Van Persie last season without nature, and where would the fun have been otherwise?

Yeah, I've just signed up for the members area but really just for the customisable ticker and the articles.

Agree that getting too deep into the stats makes it more like work, and I'd like to spend a bit less time on it this year. Cutting out H2H leagues too, don't need anything else to worry about!

I think this addition is vital because the stats previously were somewhat misleading in that we couldn't get an accurate gauge of form or loss of form. KPI now gives more meaning to the stats helping them to become more effective.

        It's fantastic.

As a whole though I've defintely come to the conclusion that the more info I have the less enjoyable the game has become for me. I was just crunching numbers constantly and banished the little niggle of a punt because it didn't add up. The 2 seasons before last I had no problem in bringing in a player I had a "feeling for" or thought they looked like bringing in some pts while watching them.

Some people love all that but the GAME is about personal enjoyment and that route isn't for me.

By the link on the spreadsheet to fixture difficulties West Ham are 2nd on the list for ease of opening. Silva could be the man, more nailed on then the City strikers assuming City buy another one. if yhey don't, I'm all over Dzeko
