Scout Scribbles – Terry and Cech Casualties for Chelsea

Petr Cech and John Terry both limp out of Chelsea’s goalless draw with Atletico in Spain, with the keeper now ruled out for the season. Everton’s Kevin Mirallas will also miss the remaining matches due to a groin injury, whilst Sylvain Distin is a big doubt for the Toffees. Etienne Capoue is back in training for Spurs and Chris Brunt is set to be fielded as left-back for West Brom this weekend:

Jose’s Stalemate in Spain

Chelsea were without the services of Eden Hazard last night as they held Atletico Madrid to a 0-0 draw in their Champions League semi-final first-leg. Ashley Cole was handed a rare start at left back in place of the suspended Branislav Ivanovic, whilst Fernando Torres led the line against his former club in a 4-3-3 formation that saw Jose Mourinho start with three defensive midfielders in an effort to keep out his opponents.

Whilst there were no goals to light up the game, the big news came in the form of injuries to two of Chelsea’s most experienced players. Both Petr Cech and captain John Terry were forced off with problems, with Mourinho confirming post-match that the former won’t feature again this season and the latter likely to face a similar fate:

“Petr Cech’s season’s over. Don’t ask me technically, but season over. And John – we have to play the final for him to play with us.”

The Blues boss also hinted that he may field a weakened side for Sunday’s vital trip to Liverpool. With the second leg of the Atletico clash just three days after the Anfield encounter, Mourinho suggested he could make wholesale changes to his starting XI and focus on Europe instead:

“I would play with the players that are not going to play Wednesday. This is not a decision the manager can make on his own. I’m just a piece in the big club and I have to go with the decision we make collectively. If the club decides to go with everything in the direction of the Champions League, I’m ready for that. We have a big match on Wednesday to play, a big match that can give Chelsea another Champions League final.”

The Scout Says: Job well done for Jose – but at what cost? The losses of Cech and Terry look set to be a massive dent in his side’s European and domestic hopes and will also have ramifications for the Fantasy landscape over the final few weeks of the season. Chelsea’s rearguard have the highest joint ownership of any defence in the Fantasy Premier League game, having provided a constant source of returns during the second half of the season, but that could all be set to change without their captain controlling the backline and their number one goalkeeper between the sticks. Consequently, owners of Liverpool’s attacking assets will be licking their lips at the thought of the likes of Luis Suarez and Raheem Sterling coming up against an under-strength Chelsea defence this Sunday, with the away side likely to rely on the inconsistent David Luiz to fill in at the back. For those who still believe Mourinho’s men can continue their defensive form for the last three games of the campaign, Mark Schwarzer’s budget 4.5 price-tag and certainty of starts will entice.

INJURY PROBLEMS FOR EVERTON

Roberto Martinez has confirmed that Kevin Mirallas will miss the last three fixtures of the season after limping out of Sunday’s victory over Manchester United. The Belgian sustained a groin injury in the latter stages of the match and will now sit out the remainder of the campaign.

“Kevin’s scans came back and they have revealed a small tear in his groin. He is going to be out for the season which is a real disappointment and a shame because he was in a phenomenal moment of form. It is not a major injury. It could be anything up to five or six weeks, and that’s looking at the worst-case scenario. Kevin is a quick healer and I would be surprised if he is not available after three or four weeks.”

Martinez also revealed that Sylvain Distin is a doubt for this weekend, having been withdrawn at half-time on Sunday with a hamstring injury:

“It’s very much doubtful. The scans revealed something of a problem but until the swelling clears it is impossible make the right diagnosis. In the next 48 hours we will find out how long Sylvain is going to be out.”

The Scout Says: Yesterday’s news will have come as a bitter blow for Mirallas’ 12% ownership, especially the 12,000 managers who snapped up the Belgian following his goalscoring performance last weekend. Attacking returns in each of his last five performances has seen the wide man acquire something of a late-season bandwagon, despite his continued risk of rotation. The midfielder’s injury now brings the 5.4-priced Gerard Deulofeu firmly back on to our radars; the on-loan Barcelona youngster is likely to replace Mirallas in the starting line-up for the remaining three fixtures of Everton’s season and will be keen to end his loan spell with a flourish. However, his classification as a forward is still a huge stumbling block. Meanwhile Distin’s hamstring complaint could be set to further frustrate his owners, with the centre-back having already missed out on clean sheet points against Manchester United due to his early withdrawal. John Stones is available for a meagre 4.2 and looks the perfect alternative to Distin for those wanting a slice of the Toffees’ in-form defence, who don’t have budget to spare.

CAPOUE RETURNS TO TRAINING

Tottenham midfielder Etienne Capoue back in training, having failed to feature since a 1-0 loss to Norwich in February. Spurs boss Tim Sherwood was, however, quick to emphasise the need to ease the Frenchman back into action after his ankle injury.

“‘It’s great to see him back in training but he has been out for two months, so we have to be careful. We’ll continue to monitor him closely.”

The Scout Says: Despite Capoue returning to full training, Sherwood’s stressing of how “careful” he needs to be with the midfielder means that he looks unlikely to challenge Nacer Chadli or Paulinho for a role in the centre of midfield in the remaining weeks of the season. The 7.1-priced Cristian Eriksen remains the most enticing option in the Spurs midfield, although Aaron Lennon – with two assists in his last two games – looks a decent differential for his side’s strong closing schedule (sto, whm, AVL).

Brunt Set for Defensive Stint

West Brom boss Pepe Mel has admitted he is likely to play Chris Brunt at left-back in the weekend home encounter against West Ham, with Liam Ridgewell almost certain to be ruled out with a knee problem:

“I think he can do a good job in that position. He’s the best option right now. It really is the most important of games for us. It’s a cup final and can be THE game to spur us on and give us life. It’s vital.”

The Scout Says: Having returned from injury in time for his side’s previous home game with Spurs, Brunt grabbed a goal in the 3-3 draw to suggest he could yet play a pivotal part in the Baggies’ last few matches. A shift to defence will more or less kill any appeal, with Graham Dorrans and Morgan Amalfitano the best options amongst the West Brom midfield – both have notched twice in the last four and, priced at 4.4 and 4.2 respectively, have a double Gameweek 37 on either side of home encounters with the Hammers and Stoke.

Am I the only one with Kun as provisional captain? He looked good and it is time CPL to concede goals IMO.

I don't think they've conceded more than 2 in a game since Pulis took over? And they kept a cleanie and picked up 3 points last game despite already having 40 points and being technically safe.

No signs that they're switching off and taking things easy.

CPL would pull the pedal off and them not conceding was really lucky lately, considering stats. Law of average I say they will concede at least 2 goals. And Kun is the only City player that produces away from home. I think it is time for him to pull that brace. He is hungry warming up for the WCup and he hasn't blank lately. He is consistent enough for me to captain him.

If that's what you really truly think, then go for it Dan. There is nothing worse than getting persuaded by others instead of going with your gut and seeing your player go mental. I should not have listened to those who said wait for Ramsey to start scoring before getting him in. I have now got him, but so does everyone and I missed his 16.

Yeah but it's manager of the season not half a season. Brendan Rodgers has taken Liverpool from 7th to 1st. Yeah he's helped by not being in other competitions, but they also have a smaller squad than every other team. Only one winner IMO

24 matches with Palace now, with 1.625 points per game, 7th most since in the league since he took over at Palace that had prior to his reign got 0.36 points per game. That's quite a difference. He could be leading them to EL before ManU had he been there whole season. Nothing against Rodgers, good job and all that, but Pulis has worked little short of miracle in Palace.

Rodgers and Pulis have both worked miracles.

There are often a few managers who have improved their team more than the manager of the League Champions. Manager of the Month might deservedly go to managers like Tony Pulis, but Manager of the Season nearly always goes to the manager of the League Champions.

Rodgers has improved his team beyond anyone's realistic expectations, and Liverpool are also hot favourites for the title, so unless they slip up in their last few matches he must be a shoo-in for the award.

Of course it tends to go to the winning manager. Same with player prizes going to best scorers of winning teams. But they do not necessarily have to go that way.

Of course Rodgers is the favourite for the award. I'm shocked if he doesn't win it. But there is a very good case for Pulis, and in my personal opinion even better than for Rodgers.

and this is very much not biased by my supposed "love of Pulis". I prefer Rodgers and his attractive short passing football thousand times to Pulis' primitive strategies. I hate Pulis, but in all fairness, he has done the greatest manager work this season, getting the worst team of the league to 7th best performances.

Yes, I agree that Pulis has done a great job, but this would be a strange time to make a change, although it would not be completely unprecedented. Rodgers' unexpected success in taking Liverpool from 7th to (probably) their first ever Premier League title is surely more deserving than some of Fergie's eleven awards.

Having just checked, I find that there have actually been 3 occasions when the award has not gone to the champion's manager - George Burley in 2000–01, for guiding Ipswich Town to fifth place in the league after securing the club's promotion from the First Division the previous season, Harry Redknapp in 2009–10 for steering Tottenham Hotspur to a top-four finish for the first time in twenty years, and Alan Pardew in 2011–12 for guiding Newcastle United to their highest position in nine years. The League Champion managers who lost out were Fergie, Carlo Ancelotti and Roberto Mancini respectively.

I'm not interested about the last 2 weeks as I'll be bringing in the other of Nasri/Rooney in next week. Still A) ?

Repost as stuck at the bottom:

have a backline of Distin (injured), Ward (MCI), Bardsley (CAR), Cahill, Azpi (liv).

Currently fielding Cahill Azpi and Bardsley which looks horrible.

.. but I also have Silva to sort out. Other mids - Ramsey Mata Eriksen Mutch.

better to take a hit and drop Silva - or take a hit and go Distin to Demichelis (playing Mutch vs Sunderland), potentially moving Silva to Yaya next week ?

Silva already dropped in price twice. Sort out defence I would suggest.
So your suggestion of Distin to Demichelis and playing Mutch this week is good.

is it wiser to bring in aguero if he is rivals biggest differential
                or risk podolski?
at very most i can see aguero 13 points, so if they captain him it is a big chunk of my lead

One more decision to make then I'm done

                A) Play Sterling & Gerrard against Chelsea
                B) Mirralas > Toure (if fit) and bench Sterling

B is for a hit, though it's a hit I'd be taking next week too (if you get my drift)

One of the first comments I read on here a couple years back was
Managers who plan their teams in August = FPL managers
Managers who plan their teams in July = FPL champions
Managers who plan their teams in June = unemployed

I was thinking that I have been planning next teams season since March. What does that make me? Also, I'm not the only one like this am I?

                    Suarez - 14m

Coleman overpriced. 6m more realistic, as he doesn't have spot duties.
                      Eriksen seems about right, 8-8.5m
Ramsey 9.5 is an overreaction surely? I wouldn't pay more than 8mil for him
                      Eriksen 8.5m is about right.

Umm he's currently 7m and has 174 points this season. Similar to Baines' total last season that got him a 7.5m price tag.

I'd imagine so, Eriksen could be 9.

I'll be getting Ramsey, probably Suarez too, probably not Coleman unless I have spare funds (I think over a season he's worth the 7m).

He's the top scoring defender in the game? More than Baines?

If Martinez stays at Everton, Coleman is a good option.

7m is too much for me. Bearing in mind we have only 100m at the start not about 110 like right now.

True, that's why I didn't go for Baines at the start of the season but ended up with both of them..

but that won't stop hundreds of thousands of people getting him in as he was the top scoring defender..

I'd say so. Ramsey maybe 10m (Mata was 10.5 off the back of a lower ppg from the previous season).

Suarez possibly even 14.5m (again, precedent is RVP who had fewer points from more games to be priced at 14m)

I think I'd get them even if they were that expensive. I think this game has taught me that you need to have at least the top couple of scorers and fill in the rest as best you can. Captaincy alone makes it so hard to make up the ground without them.

Wouldn't leave a lot for the likes of Hazard, Silva and Mata though would it? Not to mention Aguero and Rooney.......

As usual our squads will e nothing like what we would want

Aye. Last summer the big question was RVP, Bale or both. This summer will have arguably more medium-big hitters to throw into the mix.

Probably nobody needs that 8 point hit to get Ramsey, seen his price. They're taking a hit anyway, and Ramsey is just additional -4.

After watching him play the last two games, I'd argue he's even more vital now than he was back before his injury.

He's playing against teams and players that are tired, that don't have anything to play for, and some are very low on morale.

Ramsey however, is fully fit, motivated to make up for lost time and get 4th spot, morale is high, Arsenal have players coming back, they have lovely fixtures, and he's making so many forward runs that he may as well be playing as a Center Forward at times.

Fairly steep already when he was introduced at 8.0m...

                        Probably the same price.

Given price to return this season, maybe 7-7.5.

No wonder my comment on the NEW POST isn't getting any responses?

Last time asking, please help.Is it worth Silva to Nasri for -8? If not,I'll have to play one of Chester,Azpi or Puncheon..Chester and Azpi will concede for sure, and Puncheon will do nothing

Following on from KoL's post what's the most crazy thing you've done in relation to FPL? Not taken a flight, not booked a holiday, walked 10 miles to an internet cafe?

Looking forward to Giggs first team sheet - will hopefully give us some good pointers for DGW particularly in defence

When in doubt, just go with the bookies - they make a living off getting these things right (more often than wrong). Rooney favourite to score at any time, and favourite to score two or more.

                      In order of odds:
                      Rooney
                      Aguero
                      Saurez
                      Ramsey
