The Watchlist Updated – Gameweek 17

Our weekly article focussing on player recommendations for the next four to six Gameweeks is rolled out this lunchtime. We list the main movers and shakers in this week’s update, with the full listings per classification available on the sidebar on your right:

The Defence

United pair David De Gea and Patrice Evra now sit in second spot for keepers and defenders respectively. A clean sheet at Villa last week bodes well for the champions and, with home games against West Ham, Spurs and Swansea, in addition to trips to Hull and Norwich over the next five, David Moyes’ side will be optimistic of further returns. Jonny Evans offers a cheaper route into the backline than Evra, though the Frenchman’s greater security of starts and attacking potential earns him the nod.

With three kind home games (NEW, NOR, STO) and a trip to Villa on the cards over the next six, Crystal Palace’s stock takes a rise. Julian Speroni (4.5) and Joel Ward (4.0) are our preferred route into a defence that has conceded a mere three goals in the last six Gameweeks.

Norwich’s fixtures continue to look prosperous, helping John Ruddy and Martin Olsson, at 4.9 and 4.2 respectively, to a climb up this week’s rankings. Chris Hughton’s side square up to all of the bottom three over the next four Gameweeks (sun, FUL, cpl) and also welcome Hull to Carrow Road in the upcoming six – two goals conceded in their last four at home highlight the Canaries’ resilience in front of their own fans.

The fixture list starts to look better for Sunderland as we approach the turn of the year. Gus Poyet’s side have started to tighten up at the back, too – three shut-outs in the previous six bodes well for the Black Cats ahead of home games against Norwich, Villa and Southampton and trips to Cardiff and Fulham over the next six Gameweeks. Phil Bardsley has scored twice over that run of fixtures and, priced at 4.4, looks the best shout for attacking potential amongst Poyet’s first-choice defenders. Vito Mannone also climbs but it’s still to be established whether he remains in pole position for the keeper’s jersey once Keiren Westwood returns to fitness.

Villa’s Brad Guzan has four very favourable fixtures (sto, CPL, SWA, sun) to take advantage of. The midlanders have conceded at least twice in each of their last three, though and, with captain Ron Vlaar still struggling to overcome a calf complaint, their prospects looks a little bleaker – Guzan’s save points could be crucial here, whilst Ciaran Clark (4.5) remains a budget option in defence for Paul Lambert’s side.

For now, we’ve drafted in Vincent Kompany as our City defender of choice until the situation regarding Pablo Zabaleta is clearer. The Argentine has produced an assist in three of the last four Gameweeks but limped off early in last night’s cup win over Leicester – if he’s ruled out for any length of time, we’ll be keeping an eye on Dedryck Boyata; with Micah Richards also injured, Boyata, at 4.2, could be handed the right-back role over the short-term and has Fulham, Palace and Cardiff in the next six. Manuel Pellegrini also has the option of playing James Milner there, though, making Kompany the most secure option.

A home game with City kills the immediate appeal of Maarten Stekelenburg but the following four Gameweeks (nor, hul, WHM, SUN) hands Rene Meulensteen a chance to steer his side further up the table. West Brom’s Ben Foster returned to reserve action earlier in the week but currently remains a doubt ahead of games against Hull, West Ham and Newcastle in the next four.

Chelsea are the main fallers this week. Petr Cech drops out altogether, whilst John Terry takes a tumble down the defender rankings after a 2-1 win over Palace took his defensive record to a single clean sheet in 11 Gameweeks. The Blues’ skipper remains a threat in the opposition penalty area but, with Arsenal and Liverpool in the next three, his chances of shut-outs look slim. Newcastle pair Tim Krul and Mike Williamson slip a little – imminent games with Palace and Stoke look profitable but Arsenal and City lie in wait for Alan Pardew’s side over the next five Gameweeks.

Midfield

Three sets of double figures in the last six ensures Chelsea’s Eden Hazard retains top spot. The Belgian is being chased down by Theo Walcott, though, after the latter bagged a brace at the Etihad on Saturday. The Arsenal wide man has been tentatively introduced back into the fold since undergoing abdominal surgery, but with his match sharpness finally up to speed, his eye for goal looks crucial for the Gunners right now at a time when Olivier Giroud continues to toil up top. With his 4% ownership making him ideal for those scouring the market for a differential, at 9.1  he’s also considerably cheaper than team-mate Mesut Ozil, who takes a tumble in our estimations.

Yaya Toure and David Silva feature in the top five. The Ivorian looks set to be handed spot-kicks in light of Sergio Aguero’s absence and, with a goal or assist in 10 of his 16 appearances, there’s no disputing the consistency of the “casuals choice”. Silva has notched back-to-back goals against Bayern and Arsenal since recovering from a calf complaint and, like Walcott, affords us an in-form, premium-priced contender with just 4% ownership. Ahead of the above-mentioned run of fixtures, the Spaniard’s average of 6.2 points per game is indicative of his form under Manuel Pellegrini’s guidance.

Kevin Mirallas arrives back on the radar due to Gerard Deulofeu’s unfortunate hamstring injury. The Belgian climbed off the bench to replace the stricken youngster and grabbed a late goal in Everton’s weekend demolition of Fulham. He’s now scored or assisted in four of the last six home games and, at 7.2, with a 5% ownership, is an appealing option for the Toffees schedule, with starts looking secure once again.

Elsewhere on Merseyside, Jordan Henderson benefitted from a move an advanced central role in a 4-3-3 for Liverpool and bagged a 13-point haul away to Spurs on Sunday. Coming in at just 5.9, Henderson’s goal and assist at the Lane bodes well ahead of a run which hands him three favourable home games (CAR, HUL, AVL) and a trip to Stoke in the next six. Staying in the sub 6.0 bracket, Cardiff’s Peter Whittingham (5.1) also registered his first set of double figures last weekend. The Bluebirds playmaker has played every minute of the season so far and has three kind home fixtures (SOU, SUN, WHM) in the upcoming five Gameweeks to continue his ascent up the rankings.

Michu’s return to action has failed to spark a return to the form which harvested 18 goals in his debut season for Swansea. Nonetheless, his role as the lone forward keeps him in the mix – with showdowns against five of the current top seven in the next six, though, the fixtures are also firmly against him. Sunderland’s Ki Sung-Yeung makes an entrance in the lower echelons. Gus Poyet’s decision to introduce Lee Cattermole to the midfield allowed the former Celtic man the chance to move into an advanced berth against West Ham last weekend – at 4.8, he’s a budget option to consider for those expecting the Wearsiders to prosper over the upcoming schedule.

Forwards

Big-hitters Luis Suarez and Wayne Rooney lead the way, with Romelu Lukaku sandwiched in between in light of Everton’s outstanding schedule. With Sergio Aguero dropping out of the picture due to a calf complaint, Alvaro Negredo is the main climber up front – the Spaniard looks the most secure forward right now under Manuel Pellegrini but, whilst his Etihad displays have been consistent, the summer signing’s away form is somewhat concerning. Negredo has proved a frustrating option on the road and has just a single goal to his name (back in Gameweek 2) in seven away appearances so far.

Loic Remy will be confident of ending a four-game drought as he prepares to face Palace, Stoke and West Brom in the next four, whilst Olivier Giroud remains in the mix purely as he has no real competition as Arsenal’s lone forward. After the weekend clash against Chelsea, Arsene Wenger’s side have West Ham, Cardiff, Villa and Fulham in the following five as Giroud looks to remedy a run that has harvested two goals from open play from Gameweek 5 onwards.

Having scored in six of the last 10 Gameweeks, Jay Rodriguez has the form, though the fixtures are still stacked against the 5.9-priced Southampton striker – he has Spurs, Everton and Chelsea in the following four. On the other hand, Norwich forward Gary Hooper looks the perfect combination of form and fixtures. The former Celtic man has notched in four of the previous six and is full of confidence ahead of showdowns with Sunderland, Palace, Fulham and Hull in the next six.

Managerial changes have reignited the Fantasy prospects of Marouane Chamakh and Dimitar Berbatov. The former has now scored in each of the last three for Palace under Tony Pulis and, at 4.8, has fixtures on his side, as mentioned above. Berbatov has also turned his season around thanks to new Fulham boss Rene Meulensteen – two goals, an assist and a couple of bonus points in the last three bode well for the Bulgarian’s would-be suitors ahead of a tempting run (nor, hul, WHM, SUN) from Gameweek 18-21. Coming in at 7.0 and with an ownership of 3%, he’s another to consider for Aguero owners who remain unconvinced over Negredo’s potential.

  3. Negredo vs Lukaku

With the price changes taking effect tonight & the midweek games ending, tonight is the time to sell Aguero.

I think a major factor when choosing Aguero's replacement, is playing time over the festive period.

4 league games in 12 days, followed by the FA Cup 3 days after that.

I think Negredo will play three league games, missing out on the Crystal Palace & FA Cup games.

I think Lukaku will start all 4 league games, probably subbed off 70 mins or so.

Overall, I think Lukaku will play more minutes over Christmas.

Which team will score the most goals? Straight away id think City, but lets look at the fixtures:

Fulham (A) - City have been poor away from home, Fulham are showing signs of improving, but this has to be an away win, 2 or 3 goals for City.

Liverpool (H) - They have destroyed Utd, Spurs & Arsenal at home, I cant see anything other than a City win here, but surely they wont score 6 again!! I will go for 3, maybe 4 goals scored.

Crystal Palace (H) - Everyone will expect 10-0, but all the other big teams have struggled against Palace, & they appear to be defensively stronger under Pulis. I still see 3 or 4 goals for City, but will Negredo play?

Swansea (A) - This away game is the type were City have struggled so far. I will say 2 goals scored here.

Total = between 10-13 goals, but with Negredo not playing against Palace, so 7-9 with him playing.

Everton's fixtures may not be as easy as people think...

Swansea (A) - This could be a tough away game for Everton, no Europa League disturbing Swansea, I think it will be a draw, 1-1

Sunderland (H) - Sunderland are definitely improving & will be bursting with confidence after recent results, I think Everton will win it though, 2-1

Southampton (H) - As predicted, Southampton's results have flopped, failing to win any of their last 5 league games. They are still sound at the back though, so at most Everton will score 3

Stoke City (A) - Everton won 4-0 in their home fixture, but Stoke have been a lot tighter at home. I think Stoke's new style will suit Everton, I predict 2 goals for them here.

Total = 8 goals max, but surely Lukaku wont be on the pitch for every goal.

Conclusion: City to score more goals than Everton, but Lukaku to play more minutes. With City on course to score about 100 goals this season, I think it's important to have their first choice striker. As Aguero wont be back until February, I think I will opt for Negredo.

          😆

Just because he was playing slightly deeper, doesn't suddenly make him a midfielder. I sometimes wonder if people actually watch the football or if 1 person does, comes up with an opinion and the rest follow him like sheep.

That is how exactly the 'Negredo is useless without Aguero's runs' came to the fore. A rabble of sheep chomping at the bit over a theory that convinced them while being totally clueless themselves, clearly never watched Football.

I think it came from Opta who mentioned Negredo never score without Aguero on the pitch - which is true - and it got overly blown around here.

How many minutes were there Negredo in the pitch without Aguero in it? Most of the times is when City already winning and on pilot mode.

              I'm bringing in Negredo though

I did watch it. He didn't just play slightly deeper, he played deep.

You're a member, you can do a comparison tool between his stats last week vs the weeks before. The difference is just too much.

And saw some analysis of the match as well, seeing his heat map throughout the games. Mostly in the middle part of the pitch, almost none near the penalty box. I believe he spent more time on left back area (that deep) rather than near the penalty area.

Okay so the DMC part is an overstatement, but I do feel like he was playing almost the Xavi role with MU not having anyone who can make the plays from midfield.

And although there' a good chance that Rooney will start up front - but I don't see why Moyes will want to change a winning side after recent flukey performance by MU prior to the Villa match.

I've already looked at the stats and average position. I highly doubt that Moyes will not try and go all out attack on West Ham considering our failure to score in home games this season.

For me this means Rooney will be up front, on all set pieces and penalties, with favourable fixtures and playing for (at the very least) a decent side. What more can you ask for?

We all have different opinions and let's agree to disagree on Moyes plan.
The set pieces are a major point for Rooney of course. And yes I can see Rooney playing a more upfront compared to last time against West Ham but Welbeck will no doubt spearhead the attack after his goals.

Although his well playmaking performance from deeper areas in the Villa game (which I watched and analysed 😉 ) and the possibility of him continuing there - especially on more difficult and away games - is very much there.

If you think that Rooney will play that position for a sustained period of time, you are sorely mistaken. Rooney is quality and he will come to the fore.

Rooney was played in that position because Giggs was starting the game and Rooney needed to cover for Giggs' lack of legs in covering Cleverley's position during counter attacks.

Jones will come back into midfield, Giggs will drop out. Rooney moves forward. Simple really. Bookmark this post, please.

I feel rooney is massively over rated on this site, suppose there are a lot of united fans out their being slightly biased

His record over the years has been excellent, not doubting that and he is the third highest scoring striker but i just think there are better options out there

United have been poor all season and whilst rooney hogs all the set pieces he has never to me looked like a threat in open play. I have had him once this season, made him captain and luckily he scored by a flukey free kick which missed everyone and bounced in the net, not one shot from open play, i sold him for suarez week later

Negredo on other hand is cheaper, main striker for a team who are scoring cricket scores and allows you to upgrade to a heavy hitting mid

Sorry for long post but the rooney gushing annoys me at times, he is far from essential in my view

It depends on what price you purchased him at, the correct time for me was preventing a loss of .1 on him, and avoiding paying .1 more for Negredo. .2 saved, a risk at the time but one worth taking.

This season we have seen Big teams losing to promoted teams....Strong defensive teams suddenly shipping 8-10 goals in a period of 2 GWs, what all...Striker in form suddenly slumping ..viz.. Benteke...
So judging by this I wont be afraid 2 say u will be proved wrong...Lukaku might end up getting braces...or a hatty..
      U never know
But City will score good...but they usuallyy distribute their goals

Nice of you to write this, but it's come 3 days to late for me - as mentioned most folk have made their (maybe risky) decisions and stuck by them to avoid losing anything on Aguero + rises elsewhere.

I agree. If I had Rooney and Suarez already my Aguero replacement would definitely be Negredo over Lukaku.

Unfortunately I've already pinned my colours to Lukaku's mast....Rooney is the logical Aguero replacement for me.

Nice one Ron Hallpenny. Everyone has been comparing Roons to Negredo but maybe the fall guy is Lukaku. Easier to get Everton midfield coverage than Utds too.

That's the key with United...there aren't any other credible options. I have Silva so am less keen on Negredo. If I didn't have Lukaku I'd be happy enough with Mirallas.

You are overrating City's away goals. They have only scored 1,5 goals per away match, which is pretty average in the league. And, in the two games that Aguero did not start, they averaged 1 per match.

Swansea away will be tough for both. Swansea has kept clean sheet in 3 out of their last 5 home games. There is no big difference between their away scoring, so I wouldn't assume City will score more than Everton there. just saying, that in general, your numbers are too positive for City. That Swansea game is as much likely to be 0-1 goals for City as it is for Everton.

Another thing worth noting is that City has a lot of players to take their shares of attacking points. If we count out the three matches that Negredo played 10 minutes or less and 4 matches where Lukaku wasn't yet an Everton player, we get the following ratio of involvedness in team goals:

      Negredo 10/3 = ~25%.
      Lukaku 12/24 = 50%

Negredo's ratio could be pushed up to, say, 33% because he will play much more now, but actually he had perhaps stronger ratio back when he was a substitute. But even if we did that and went also with your numbers of goals and say there will be about 7-9 goals with Negredo on and 6-7 goals with Luka in these 4 rounds, you could expect attacking returns (goals or assists) for Negredo from about 2-3 goals and for Lukaku from about 3-4 goals.

In addition, Lukaku is £1M cheaper and you can get better City midfield cover than Everton midfield cover. So, I would go with Lukaku. As I did already monday.

I wish my fear wasn't holding me back from dropping Ramsey. I'd love a midfield "punt slot" to go with Haz, Wally & Silva. I'd try out Giaccherini, Valencia or maybe even Hendo. Sadly, I'm too afraid.

Nice choice. You'd never look back though, would you? When you drop him it's for good, right? I got him at 5.9m but I don't think that factors into my fear at all, it's his ownership.

Well with WC coming I can always go back seeing as the value lost is minimal but I think I may cut him loose and try move up the rankings in that way. Obviously it could backfire but I think now with Walcott and Podolski back, even more rotation in the Arsenal side and more spreading of goals, it could prove fruitful.

I had to choose between Walcott and Silva, knowing that if I didn't pick Silva I have no City cover.

The opinions I got here was to go with Walcott and the idea of "cover" is somewhat the wrong idea. Get the player who you think will score most points.

That player for me is Walcott. If I didn't own him, I would fear him. Although I have no City cover at present, I don't fear Silva in the same way. I fear City, but that's a bit different.

      Hope that helps!

They have a chance because WBA have been awful, the reality is Jevans may not even play and United have been woeful at home and may concede even to West Ham. Its def a risk but Walcott could potentially score a brace where as i don't see that from Nasri.

Young, a perfect player acc 2 EPL demands.
Proved how talented hes to whichever clubs he has been on loan.
Even @ Chelsea he surely played better than every Chelsea Striker in the Preseason.
Then whats wrong with Chelsea? Why is he always made a scapegoat every new season?
    Its simply beyound logical understanding..

It's called a watch list because your on the look out for these players to do well in the coming weeks. It's not 100% of things they've previously done. Remy and Reither must have the better fixtures and prospects to do well.

    Team is:

    Mignolet Marshall
    Coleman Williams Ivanovic Turner Baker
    Hazard Ramsey Barkley Ravmo Sessegnon
    Rooney Suarez Aguero

    Pick 1 (I have 2 FTs):
    A) Agüero and Sessegnon- Lukaku and Özil/Touré/Silva/Nasri/Walcott
    B) Agüero and Morrison- Lukaku and Nasri
    C) Agüero and Sessegnon- Negredo and Nasri/Silva/Walcott

Am leaning towards C to get some City coverage. Negredo will be the spear head of the penetrating City attack for most games and Lukaku hasn't been so explosive of late.

However, I haven't had Ozil this season and before the City game he had 3 straight double figure hauls...

Also, Toure is another I haven't had this season and all those casuals are really annoying me!

      Hey, what can u do...
