Manchester City made their second foray into the summer transfer market a couple of weeks ago by signing the defensive midfielder Fernando from FC Porto. Having failed with a bid back in January, the Premier League champions returned with an improved offer and finally captured the 26-year-old in a deal believed to be in the region of £12m:

Speaking to the club’s official website upon completion of the move, the Brazilian was clearly delighted with his switch to the English top-flight, as Manuel Pellegrini attempts to win the title for the second successive season at the helm:

“I am so happy to finally be joining Manchester City. I’m looking forward to meeting my new team-mates and helping City to defend the title. It is a very exciting time to be part of this football club and I cannot wait to play in the Premier League. City fans can be assured I will give my all every time I play and I’m looking forward to many happy years in Manchester. I have enjoyed my stay with Porto and I thank the club and the fans for their support during my time in Portugal. Now I am ready for a new chapter in my career.”

The History

Fernando’s career kicked off in his native country with Vila Nova back in 2005. A couple of years later, having scored three times in 57 appearances for the Brazilian third division outfit, he was snapped up by Porto on a five-year contract. Loaned out to Estrela Amadora in his first season in Portuguese football, he netted once in 27 matches before returning to his parent club in time for the start of the 2008-09 campaign.

Nailed-on in the centre of the park, Fernando has been a key figure in a run which has seen his side win four league titles, two Portuguese cups, five Portuguese Super Cups and a Europa League title over the subsequent six seasons. At Porto, a total of 232 appearances over all competitions harvested five goals and nine assists for a player who is no stranger to incurring the referee’s wrath – over the course of his career, the 26-year-old has picked up 71 bookings and been dismissed on six occasions.

The Prospects

Nicknamed “The Octopus” due to his tireless running in the middle of the park, Fernando’s signing is a sensible one from Pellegrini. Last season’s acquisition of Fernandinho proved a masterstroke and laid the foundations for Yaya Toure’s best ever year in the top-flight – with the Brazilian situated in front of the back-four, Toure was afforded greater attacking freedom and served up 20 goals in City’s title-winning campaign.

It was noticeable last term, however, that City had no viable alternative for Fernandinho in the centre of the park. Indeed, in the five games he failed to feature, Pellegrini’s side drew blanks on four occasions (against Stoke, Sunderland, Chelsea and Norwich) as their swashbuckling ways were somewhat limited by the Brazilian’s absence, with Toure taking up a more defensive role as a result.

Fernando should offer City a like-for-like alternative to Fernandinho, then, and as Pellegrini look to overhaul the central midfield area, question marks will surely grow over the futures of players such as Jack Rodwell, James Milner and Javi Garcia, with Gareth Barry already leaving for Everton. Bearing in mind City scored in every game with Fernandinho in the side, his contribution – whilst failing to catch Fantasy managers’ eyes – was vital in affording Pellegrini’s attack-minded players the freedom to flourish.

If, as expected, the City boss continues with the 4-4-2 formation that harvested 102 goals in 2013/14, Fernando’s arrival merely strengthens the champions’ options. A lack of attacking potential means few will look to bring him on board but, as Fernandinho showed last term, the knock-on effect bodes well for the likes of Toure, David Silva, Samir Nasri, Sergio Aguero and Edin Dzeko further up the park.

I put in €10 to bet on these two Semis, I have €3 left to spend after last night nothing came through...

Someone give me a good bet for €3 😉

Thinking something with long odds as there's not much value to be had and its only €3.

Correct half-time / full-time score? Someone with a bit more experience in betting? 🙁

  3. FPL Should Reclassify Players Mid Season
    EmreCan Hustle

    Two changes which I feel would make FPL even better this season;

    1. At some point during the season (maybe the winter transfer window) all OOP or POO players should be re-classified into the positions where they've been deployed.

    2. Often defenders come on at the 15 min mark and contribute heavily to their team's CS, but end up getting only 1 point(while the rest get 6). This doesn't seem fair to me. Any defender who has played over 60 mins and kept a CS should get the 6 points.

Do these changes seem reasonable? Would love FFS thoughts 🙂

    Thanks.

I love an OOP player so I'd rather they didn't do that and any defender who plays 60 minutes and keeps a clean sheet already gets four points for it.

I feel they should start rewarding defensive players, much like this McDs, but in a proportionate way.

I can suggest a proportionate way.
1 point for every 3 recovered balls and 1 point for every blocked shot.
          For goals conceded points deducted should be incremental; e.g. 0 for 1GC, -1 for 2GC, -2 for 3GC, -4 for 4GC, -6 for 5GC, -10 for 6GC, -2n for n GC (n > 7).

Alternatively, one can keep the blocked shot / recovered ball as in McD. And increase the rewards for goals simultaneously, something like 7 points for scoring a goal. The main idea is to make it proportionate. At the end of the day, a hattrick scorer should not end up with same points as a defensive mid. Again, after a terrific defensive display Leiva should not end up with 3 points only.

for number 1 i actually thought about applying this to a tiny fantasy game i made where it would be just about possible. but in fpl surely it wouldn't work as the giant mess it would make to people's squads who already own those players.

If Zabaleta starts for City and hobbles off after 20 mins, will the substitute (say Sagna) get 6 points for playing the rest of the game and keeping a CS? I think he'll only get 1 point.

chance creators and key passers create assist na? thats why we all love set piece hogs and silva type players.. or am i missing something? and givin McD style points for recovered balls and blocked shots for defensive mids would just ruin the fun of the game. just my view though. all depends on fpl towers(and Granville 🙂 )

some players aren't lucky enough to be playing with aguero who finishes superbly. there are players who create endless chances but they are squandered by sub-par strikers through no fault of their own. (I'm looking at you Soldado)

I don't get this argument at all personally. Why do we want every player to be ownable? If every player is getting points then that completely removes the skill of the game (see McD for example – makes keeping a CS practically irrelevant for defenders, and goals/assists for mids).

Would only water down the game imo.

Either remove the January Wildcard, or replace the Main and January Wildcards with First Half-Season and Second Half-Season Wildcards. At least we wouldn't then be forced to play one in January and all end up with similar squads.

Straw poll says Messi...will be the most common choice
I'm leaning towards someone more defensive
No way today's game will be like yesterday's so no goal fest or mega attacker points.
I'm strongly leaning DeVrij, Garay or Mascherano
      Likely DeVrij or Garay

Unless someone can tell me a way for Blind to get forward and get in some crosses/assists. Then may go Blind.

It's human nature to think what happened yesterday will happen today. But in this case highly doubt it.

A change I'd like to see in FPL

some way to appreciate the pass-master midfielders who don't score or provide the final ball for a goal. be that through points for pass accuracy/completion or for number of chances created/key passes.

would make teams less template as we re-evaluate midfield options. instead of all picking from a small bunch of goal-getting mids. at the moment there are too many midfielders who simply aren't a fantasy option.

how can it be a perfect game if a sizeable portion of players aren't contributing to the point dynamics despite being instrumental for their teams?

whats an example of a pass master mid who does not get points though? Silva, set piece hogs, eriksen etc get assists anyway for doing just that.. even modric was an ok option 2 years ago(him and lennon both got 140-150 points in that season i remember).. the only guys who are left out are the holding mids like mikel etc and tbh its a good thing they are left out 🙂 .. there's no fun in cheering a tackle and counting passes to check the success rate :)..
goals, assists, cleanies, saves.. simple yet fun and effective

agree with you about prizes though 🙂 .. most seasons theres nothing to play for after GW 30 or so and then its just a habit tbh. the rivalry of ML's depend on the rivals and many people lost interest after Jan. Prizes though would give some incentive 🙂

seen your reply above and agreed as far as soldado etc concerned 🙂 .. there is something beautiful about the frustration of seeing your creative mid lay chances on a plate and have a sub par striker squander it though 🙂 .. the joy goin through the misses until that final goal actually happens is part of fpl.

someone like modric should be getting more points than that though given his talent/standing/performances

wilshere didn't have a great season but he is an example of a mid whose work goes un-noticed by FPL unless he assists. mccarthy at everton had a wonderful season but gets no points for his work

and I disagree that holding mids should get no love. players like that shouldn't be rewarded like they are in McD's but think there is a happy medium

The problem with rewarding defensive contributions is that the bad teams accumulate more. So Matic should be priced 5m, and Jedinak should be priced 8m.

It's just doesn't work to reward the better players.

I agree with the passer. 1 point for every chance created should suffice. (Not including set pieces) Opta already count these, so it wouldn't be difficult, or extortionate. In yesterday's thrashing for example, Lahm got 3 chances created as the top player, Ozil got 2 as joint second highest.

1/3 of the points of an assist for the same contribution that leads to goals seems fair.

Silva created 6-7 chance per game on average if i remember correctly.. and ozil around 5 per game in the epl. would make them perma captain choices and easy 200+ point players when you couple assists and goals. would ruin the game

it could be 1 point for every two/three chances created. just something to recognise their contribution.

same with RBs/BSs. if they had 1/3 of the importance they have in McDs I think that could work

Why would it ruin the game? Didn't Yaya get over 200 points last season? Price them all around 12m and everyone would have to make a choice between fixtures and form or destroying their team to put the maximum big hitters in.

Chances created is a terrible stat though imo. I remember Kyle Walker getting millions at the start of last season, simply because he'd pass it to Townsend who'd then launch it into row z.

with the new bonus system the creative mids are way down on their old points totals. There is no value in assisting mids now only the goal scoring ones (and even then they are not getting as much bonus as before and are overvalued as a result).

Losing bps for getting dispossessed is wrong too imo as attacking fb's, wingers and fwds have to be brave enough to take on people in order to create chances. Either they need to increase the bps for beating an opponent or reduce the bp's for getting dispossessed imo

If it is -1 for being dispossessed three times then Messi loses the almost same the same bps as Suarez (Suarez almost 8 take ons per game winning 35% of them = 5 dispossession per game = -1bps avg, Messi just over 8 take ons per game at 50% success = 4.1 disposessions per game = -1bps per game avg)

                  Cracking article though thanks.

      Repost from above...

I don't get this argument at all personally. Why do we want every player to be ownable? If every player is getting points then that completely removes the skill of the game (see McD for example – makes keeping a CS practically irrelevant for defenders, and goals/assists for mids).

Would only water down the game imo.

not every player would get points, every type of player would get points. a world class holding mid would get points for pass accuracy/completion and key passes/chances created but a terrible one like whelan or palacios would still go un-noticed

it would make the game more skillful imo as the best managers would be able to find a great balance between goal-scoring mids and passing mids.

what's the skill in every manager picking 4 number 10s for their midfield slots?

So you'll end up with someone like Matic getting 5-6 points EVERY game. What's the point then?

The skill in this game comes from picking the players that are likely to score goals/get assists before the fact. Getting players in before a good run of fixtures, spotting form etc.

The bigger the gap between good and poor options only accentuates the skill required in picking the best players for a given week/period.

against teams that chelsea dominates he wouldn't. the mids who are further forward creating would also get slightly more points from chances created/key passes on top of scoring so they would still score more than the matic types.

I think a great example is Gerrard. everyone was banging on about how reliant he is on set plays/pens for points. that a player like him who is a talisman for his team doesn't score points in open play is ridiculous

But having the template team doesn't get you far does it? You're hardly going to win the game with it, are you?

Template teams are more an issue to do with the information on here and other sites rather than the scoring system. A different scoring system will still have superior options, they may be different, but they'll still exist.

The Guardian game over-rewarded defenders and defensive midfielders. I remember Michael Turner being the most desirable player for a while!

A change I would like to see is for the value of players to be closer in line with their real-life value and for the points earned to be a reflection of this. This would make it harder to have many top-level strikers and more important to balance a squad. I'm not sure in practice how the points earned would do this...

In a game where the only scoring categories are assist = 6, goal = 10 and cleansheet = 12 (but goals scored against defender = -2) would you rather have.

    A) 1 match of Muller (in final) and 1 match of Luiz (in 3rd place game)
    B) 2 matches of DeVrij

concerned w/ option A in the case that Luiz gets blown out again (cost me -10 yesterday)

Yeah, I'm going for Messi. The other options I have are Sneijder and Robben, but I'm going for Leo.

        Lightning doesn't strike first
No way it'll be a goal fest again
Betting it's a tight defensive game
Robben will be crushed by Masch and Demichaelis
Congested defensive middle will inhibit Messi

I'm thinking Garay or DeVrij, possibly even Rojo or Blind if I can convince myself that they'll have a chance to get forward.

    Substitution Puzzle!

I have this situation in front of me and am stumped. Any help would be greatly appreciated and I'd bestow good karma on you forever.

    Current Squad...

    Boateng (8), Hummels (3), Luiz (6), Rojo (X), Blind (X), De Vrij (X)
    Lahm (18), Oscar (9), Kroos (19), Gustavo (7), Mascherano (X)
    Klose (7), Messi (x), Depay (X)

Hummels and Luiz are both out, so I can sub in Defenders...prob Rojo and De Vrij....Do I take out Gustavo (7) to fit in Blind?

If he starts, does Klose become Depay?

Thanks again for any help. I'm a newbie. :/

Robben has actually been pretty consistent, so I think I will do Robben. The only game where he got less than 8 fantasy points was vs. Mexico and they had a great defense. Argentinian defense has looked shaky.

Gotta say I felt sorry for Bernard last night. All that pre-KO Neymer jizzfesting (is that a word?) can't of helped his confidence.
