Moving Target

Moving Target – Luke Shaw

Manchester United’s new manager Louis Van Gaal made an early statement of intent by smashing the transfer record for the world’s most expensive teenager with the summer acquisition of Southampton protégé Luke Shaw. The deal, reported to be in excess of £30m, pairs the England left back with Spanish midfielder Ander Herrera (signed from Athletic Bilbao for over £28m) on the list of early summer arrivals at Old Trafford as Van Gaal prepares to revive the club’s fortunes after a disappointing 2013/14 campaign.

With Southampton’s promising squad dented by the departure of Shaw and other key players Adam Lallana and Ricky Lambert, as well as manager Mauricio Pochettino, the move appears a necessary step if Shaw is to fulfil his own potential.

Shaw leaps onto the Fantasy radar wearing the red jersey of perennial title contenders, United, under the tutelage of a highly experienced manager with a penchant for attacking football. Here’s the most expensive teenager in world football on the big move:

“I am thrilled and excited to be joining Manchester United. I have been at Southampton since I was eight years old and I would like to thank them and the fans for everything they have done for me. I want to continue to progress my career and joining United is the ideal place for me to do that… I am looking forward to learning from the world-class players and management at the club.”

THE HISTORY

Shaw joined Southampton as an academy prospect, having been turned away by Chelsea’s development centre at the tender age of eight. Unhindered, by 15 years of age Shaw was already heading for stardom and featured regularly in the Saints’ under-18 side, before making his first team debut in the January 2012 FA Cup draw with Millwall as a 16-year-old.

Later that year, the club’s promotion to the Premier League saw Shaw – despite failing to play a single minute of Championship football – handed his league debut by Nigel Adkins, making the-then 17-year-old the youngest player to start a top-flight game for the Saints. Shaw went on to accumulate 25 league appearances in his first professional season, with six clean sheets and an assist to boot.

The 2013/14 season saw Shaw announce to the world that he was ready for the limelight. With Mauricio Pochettino’s exciting young team drawing the plaudits for ambitious, attacking football, the defender emerged as one of the brightest talents in the Premier League, with his marauding style drawing comparisons with the Saints’ previous high-profile left back – Real Madrid star Gareth Bale. Thirty-five league appearances, 14 clean sheets and one assist earned Shaw a nomination for 2013/14 Young Player of the Year award and procured a spot in the PFA Team of the Season.

His displays were rewarded with a call-up to the England national team along with team-mates Lallana and Lambert. Shaw will now be able to reflect on an excellent sophomore season, cementing a spot in Roy Hodgson’s Brazil 2014 squad and, despite the failings of the national side, the left-back returns to Manchester with a World Cup start to his name and the experience of a showpiece event.

THE PROSPECTS

There are a number of uncertainties around the future of some of the biggest performers at the Theatre of Dreams. Rumours of a shift to the 3-4-3 formation deployed by Van Gaal in Brazil have become popular within the media but we should consider these claims in their proper context. Van Gaal had used a 4-3-3 going into the tournament and confessed to making the tactical switch to counter Spain.

“I played this system because I believe that we are not good enough to beat Spain with our normal 4-3-3 formation”

In fact, Van Gaal has been a dedicated 4-3-3 practitioner throughout his career, including successes with Barcelona and Bayern Munich and famously won the Champions League with a brave young Ajax side.

Regardless of formation, the first challenge for Shaw will be to oust veteran defender Patrice Evra from the role on the left flank. Certainly, his chances look good, with reports indicating the Frenchman is edging towards the exit door after requesting a move to Juventus, though Antonio Conte’s departure from the Italian club may put the transfer on hold until a new manager is installed.

The comparison tool in the Members area makes for very interesting reading when the two left-backs are put side by side. Although Evra outperformed Shaw with a goal and three assists to the youngster’s single assist in 2013/14, the latter registered an attempt on goal with greater frequency (131.1 minutes to 159.2) and whilst the pair’s key passes average falls in Evra’s favour (79.6 to 95.4 minutes), Shaw’s game is clearly in the ascendancy, given that he created a chance every 169.2 minutes in 2012/13.

Consequently, Shaw has been handed a tidy price hike across the Fantasy games. The Sky Sports Fantasy game has slapped the youngster with a 6.9 price tag, elevating him firmly into the premium bracket, whilst in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, a price of 6.0 is higher than any of United’s backline option, despite this being Shaw’s first year at Old Trafford.

If reports of Van Gaal’s 3-4-3 hold true, though, and Shaw does indeed nail down a starting berth under Van Gaal, United’s new man could well provide some serious bang for buck, even with his new and prestigious tag. Given that the Red Devils have no European schedule as a result of David Moyes’ abysmal year at the helm, rest and rotation certainly seem unlikely, whilst an opening schedule which pits United against just one of last term’s top 10 (SWA, sun, bur, QPR, lei, WHM, EVE, wba) in the first eight Gameweeks is the most favourable around and is certain to prompt many to invest in Van Gaal’s side at both ends of the park.

Fab, Oscar or Schurlle? I already have Fabragas in the team but looking at the possibility of a cheaper route into the team that will provide good attacking play. Oscar in the WC was the only Brazillian that shown up really and he is playing with better players now than he was in Brazil!! Schurlle had a good WC when he played and will most likely play this season a good bit I feel.. Should I stick with Fabragas or change to Oscar or Schurlle and free up a tiny bit?

I'd punt on Counthino instead of Eriksen for the same money. Remy or Pelle for Adebayor to free up some money, Downgrade De Gea for a keeper Like Krul, Mannone/Paltimon (whoever starts)... That would leave money to upgrade Nugent and get both Remy or Pelle or somebody else of your choosing... Nugent WON@T carry his chamionship form to the premier league... He will have an impact for the team but you will get more goals form teams like remy or Pelle in my opinion

Ty. I consider De Gea a steal for the price and first 8 games. I might rather downgrade Chiriches (seeing hes injured..) and play with the Nugent Adebayor options as you mentioned. I feel Liverpool will have a tough time having EU football and Suarez gone. Id rather monitor them at the start and go with eriksen in the meantime. Maybe Lambert/Sterling/Sturridge will turn out a better option once the season kicks off.
Maybe 3-5-2 and upgrade Shelvey to Arnauto?

Planning to WC for the two week break after GW3?

Generally speaking, Liverpool, Arsenal and Man City are considered goal machines regardless of the opposition, while Chelsea and Crystal Palace offer defensive consistency over the season. But if you are planning a 3 week team, here's a few things to consider:

Based on the season ticker, here's a couple of places you might want to make your investments...

Teams to write off (let's face it, no matter how cheap the player is, you ain't starting him in these games):
    Leicester: EVE, che, ARS
    Burnley: CHE, swa, MUN
    - Only buy if they are the cheapest player that you'd consider (will play) by position.

Big teams to show caution (you may be able to cover returns with budget options due to tough fixtures):
    Liverpool: SOT, mci, tot
    Everton: lei, ARS, CHE

Premium defences to cover (possible doubles):
    Man United: SWA, sun, bur
    Chelsea: bur, LEI, eve

    Budget defences to consider:
    Hull: qpr, STO, avl
    Villa: sto, NEW, Hull

    Premium attacking returns:
    Man United: SWA, sun, bur
    Spurs: whm, QPR, LIV

    Budget attacking returns:
    Hull: qpr, STO, avl
    QPR: HUL, tot, SUN

Transfer strategies to bear in mind (cherry picking a two game run):
Stoke/Swansea trade GW2 or 3 gets you: AVL, (hul/) BUR, WBA
Your GW1 or 2 injuries to Southampton (WBA, whm) or Newcastle (avl, CPL)

Wildcarding in GW3 provides the ability to ride two weeks worth of transfer activity when user activity is at it's highest. You can make money on players you don't intend to keep long term and bring in all the early assets showing good form. Dont go expecting to make £2m. About £0.5m 'cash' (ie not in your team value, but in your sale vale) from the players you move on at the end of the window is realistic, and you'll save double that on the big early bandwagons if they do continue their form (think Ramsey, Coleman and Mignolet at the start of last season).

Yes, looked at a couple of things that might influence one's decision

          -Bandwagons
-Injuries(not really relevant early on, but might be during an international break,CL etc)
          -Increase in TV
          -Swing in fixtures
          -Double gameweeks

I must say, I was set to keep my WC for a change...but they way you put it is tempting!

I know a lot of people strongly favour holding on, and the year before last my friend obliterated us with his late WC so I've seen it when used well - but last year I played mine early and hammered the mini league. It was won before christmas.

Still, i think there will be a far more in-depth, 2-sided argument put forward by the Scouts closer to the season.

Has anyone noticed the dodgy photos some of the players from promoted sides have been given? One of the entertaining factors of FPL is the unflattering photos that go with each players profile, usually snapped mid-sprint when a player least expects it, their face contorted into a repugnant grimace, drawing up vague recollections the FAST acronym (See Konchesky and Hammond of Leicester).

If you look at some of the latest ones though, closeups taken from a distance with a high-power lens at a press conference or kit launch, it takes it to a whole new creepy, soul-staring level. I’m thinking of Hamer, Albrighton and Upson from Leicester as well as Gilks, Stephen Reid and Sordell of Burnley. Barnes of Burnley just about manages the stoic look without going full predator but even he has a borderline psychopath look about him.

It might go beyond the promoted sides I haven’t delved too deeply looking for updated player mugshots, but let me know if you find any other prime examples.

Very tempting but not sure the fixtures warrant it with CL qualification shoved in there as well.

I’ve thrown this out on here a couple of times previously to decent response, so I’ll leave it here one more time. I’m researching how people relate with their superiors and how it can influence their career satisfaction for my Masters dissertation. I could use some more participants for the questionnaire, so if anyone has 3-4 minutes to spare and wants to fill it out it would be most appreciated.

Assuming LVG opts for 4-3'3 the players United have similar to those the national team of Netherlands could give us something like

    Kuyt is valencia
    shaw is blind
    de vrij is evans
    vlaar is jones
    indi is cartick
de jong is a new player United will purchase
sneider is one of Mata hernandez
robben is....janujaz noone else has pace
    depay is rooney
    rvp is himself

so do u think Manchester United could line up like this?

Also, The Netherlands only lined up the way they did in the World Cup due to the squad available to him (injuries, i.e. Strootman, taken into consideration). I think we are likely to see a shape/tactic from LVG that he thinks best suits the players he has at United, whether it is similar to something he has used before or completely new.

    De Gea Mannone
    Vert Cahiill Debuchy O'Shea Duff
    Snodgrass Ozil Sanchez Eriksen Ward-Prowse
    Bony Rooney Wickham

Any raging errors that people would like to pint out?

Firstly,I'd like to point out that this is a great team. Only slight changes I would make

*Mannone to any 4.0 keeper (you're going to play DDG in the first ten fixtures anyways)
*Use the cash to do Snodgrass to Arnautovic(no Stoke player is a worry)
*Then do Wickham to Jelavic to accomodate for the Hull player lost

Firstly, I'd like to point out this is great advice.

However I can't say I'm particularly sold on Jelavic and will wait to see if Wickham takes last seasons form into pre season.

I'm not a big fan of the non playing keeper as it upsets the apple cart further down the line - an injury or non playing gameweek means you have to use a transfer perhaps even two to remedy the situation.

And I think Snodgrass is good value, although Arnie is high up on my targets to go into my team.

Still, it doesn't really matter because my final team will probably look nothing like this.

        Thanks for the input

I personally prefer Ramsey over Ozil. Ozil is fantastic, but I think Ramsey's performances will translate into more FPL points. And if Ramsey picks up where he left off, he's unstoppabe.
