Frisking the Fixtures – Gameweek 4 – The Strong

As an exciting transfer window closes and the first international break begins, we take a look ahead and try to gauge the impact of the upcoming schedule on our Fantasy thinking. First up, as always, are the teams with favourable fixtures to come over the next four to six Gameweeks – we see a couple of title hopefuls and a spread of lesser ranked teams are offered platforms for short-term success.

Stoke City

“involvement

A shock 1-0 win at the Etihad was just the tonic that Mark Hughes’ team needed after a sluggish start to the season. Buoyed by that result, the Potters enter a period of excellent fixtures with home encounters against Leicester, Newcastle and Swansea and trips to QPR, Sunderland and Southampton. After getting their act together at arguably the toughest ground in the top-flight, these fixtures suggest that there could be Fantasy points aplenty on offer at both ends of the pitch.

Asmir Begovic is firmly ensconced in goal and provides good value in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game at 5.0, while at the back, managers can choose between the budget delights of Marc Wilson, the added assist threat of Erik Pieters or the full luxury of goals and bonus points from Ryan Shawcross. In midfield, one-time Fantasy darling Victor Moses will be hoping to reboot his Premier League career while Liverpool alumnus Oussama Assaidi was signed on deadline day after a fairly successful loan last season.

Marko Arnautovic, widely expected to kick on after settling in during the latter half of last season, was unexpectedly benched last time out and has a fight on his hands to regain his place, though the potentially season-ending injury to Peter Odemwingie won’t harm his cause. Up front, there’s a parallel story as Bojan Krkic was left out of the squad against City and any investment in that area would surely be in the direction of weekend goalscorer Mame Biram Diouf.

Man United

“involvement

Louis van Gaal’s winless start to the Premier League rolls on, with a lacklustre draw against Burnley the latest in a series of unconvincing displays. However, a huge transfer window culminated in the loan of Radamel Falcao, whose legendary goal-scoring pedigree is thought by many to signal the start of an upturn. Certainly, on paper, the new-look squad of world-class talent ought to make light work of their upcoming five fixtures, with home games against QPR, West Ham and Everton and trips to Leicester and West Brom.

For those with faith in the Reds defence, David De Gea provides a well priced route in, while Jonny Evans is expected to keep his place and comes in at 5.4 in the FPL game. The arrival of both Angel Di Maria and Radamel Falcao has caused some to doubt the security of Juan Mata’s place in the first team – the former arrives at Old Trafford with an outstanding history of playmaking on the continent but question marks over formation may mean that it may be better to wait and see how things shake out before investing in the Argentine. Falcao, on the other hand, has no such question marks. Priced at 11.0 in the FPL game, the Colombian is an elite option whose arrival could trigger a raft of wildcards as Fantasy managers scramble to accommodate such an expensive option alongside other pricey performers. Quite how Van Gaal shapes his side to also accommodate Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie remains to be seen.

Sunderland

“involvement

Two draws and a loss from their opening three tells a fair tale of the Black Cats’ stuttering start to the season. Gus Poyet will be desperate to improve and the next four fixtures offer some assistance – after the tricky visit of Tottenham, the Wearsiders have a trip to Burnley followed by two home fixtures against Swansea and Stoke, which offer hope of points at both ends of the pitch.

In goal, last year’s budget hero Vito Mannone appears to have seen off the challenge of Costel Pantilimon and offers excellent value. The loan of Sebastien Coates could threaten Wes Brown’s place or even that of John O’Shea, but luckily the most appealing option here is Patrick van Aanholt, who already has an assist to his name.

The midfield offers a wide selection of budget gambles. Seb Larsson opened his account in Gameweek 1 and followed up with an assist the following week to remind us of his well priced potential. Jack Rodwell is looking for a fresh start on Wearside and has already scored, whilst, sadly, hopes for Will Buckley seem to be curtailed for now by irregular game time. Connor Wickham has been utilised on the flank so far but the arrival of Buckley and Ricardo Alvarez may see the youngster challenge Steven Fletcher for the lone forward role.

Liverpool

“involvement

After struggling to dominate Southampton or make an impression against Man City, Brendan Rodgers’ side rediscovered their form with a highly convincing destruction of previously unbeaten Tottenham at the Lane. That 3-0 triumph set Liverpool up perfectly for a very encouraging schedule – Aston Villa, West Brom, Everton and Hull City all roll up to Anfield in the next six Gameweeks, while trips to West Ham and QPR will hold little fear.

A back-line that struggled to keep clean sheets last season seemed to have been sounding the same chord this term but shutting out a Pochettino side at home is no mean feat and Simon Mignolet could be a decent goalkeeping option in light of these fixtures. A goal from new recruit Alberto Moreno makes him an enticing alternative to the hugely owned Dejan Lovren, though if the cheaper youngster Javier Manquillo can nail down a berth ahead of Glen Johnson and Jon Flanagan, he could be a bargain. In midfield, it’s hard to look past Raheem Sterling whose two goals and assist have taken him to third in the overall midfielder standings in FPL. But those who thought that the departure of Luis Suarez would rob Steven Gerrard of the oxygen of penalties may be thinking twice after Rodgers’ high-intensity methods earned his skipper another spot-kick at the weekend, meaning the veteran may still be an option. With two assists in three appearances, Jordan Henderson is also ticking over nicely, and at just 6.0, offers an alternative in the mid-price bracket.

Up front, Mario Balotelli was lively without product but still looked like a potentially explosive goal-scorer – if Rodgers retains the midfield diamond, the Italian international looks a valid option as part of the front two. Meanwhile Daniel Sturridge’s second consecutive blank is a little disconcerting for his owners but few would predict that the drought will abide for long and the only real deterrent is his eye-watering price-tag – all the more so with Balotelli 1.5 cheaper.

Also Consider

Crystal Palace
The loss of Tony Pulis is still being felt by Fantasy managers but Neil Warnock is a canny old campaigner and a shift from budget-priced defence to budget-priced attack could be on the cards after the Eagles put three past Newcastle.

With home matches against Burnley and Leicester plus trips to Hull and West Brom in the next six Gameweeks, Jason Puncheon and Wilfried Zaha look like enticing options, whilst Dwight Gayle is expected to recover from the ankle knock that forced him off last weekend – the striker has scored four goals in his last two matches in all competitions and, at 4.5 in the FPL game, could be an excellent budget enabler in a 3-5-2 formation. For those still holding out hope of clean sheets, Joel Ward still appears to be the best option, though with Zaki Fryers arriving yesterday, in addition to the competition offered by Martin Kelly and Adrian Mariappa on the right, the Eagles first-choice backline under Warnock is yet to be decided.

Burnley
Sean Dyche will gladly chalk up a no-score draw with Man United as a victory and he’ll be hoping to prise his plucky team from the bottom of the table using the lever of favourable fixtures. Sunderland, West Ham and Everton all roll up to Turf Moor, while trips to Crystal Palace, West Brom and Leicester present a landscape of points potential for their key Fantasy assets. Michael Duff looks a bargain at 4.0 if he can hold onto his place, whilst Dean Marney is the budget fifth midfielder of choice for many on the site, though George Boyd (4.4) could prove an alternative if he can nail down the left flank role. Lukas Jutkiewicz excelled in pre-season but Danny Ings, with 27 goals last season, has better underlying stats and could easily break his drought with those fixtures.

Southampton
A first win of the season at West Ham was no more than the Saints deserved after impressing under Ronald Koeman, given the exodus of talent over the summer. The next six fixtures offer hope of more to come as Koeman gets to grips with the Premier League: the visits of Newcastle, QPR, Sunderland and Stoke all look primed for Fantasy points, though trips to in-form Swansea and Tottenham under their former manager may be more problematic.

Fraser Forster has done well for save points so far, though for a similar price one can obtain the attack-minded services of Nathaniel Clyne, who with a goal, assist and clean sheet so far sits in fourth place for defenders overall. Morgan Schneiderlin’s brace makes him an intriguing lower mid-price option whilst James Ward-Prowse also got off the mark with an assist. Dusan Tadic has thus far failed to justify his price-tag, but a mooted shift to a role in the hole could be hugely beneficial to him and his owners. Graziano Pelle has similarly got off to a fairly slow start but his goal against West Ham could be just what his confidence needs to begin repaying his managers’ faith. New winger Sadio Mane arrives with an excellent scoring record and is another to monitor.

No. And I am a long time Liverpool fan. Johnson keeps giving poor performances while his replacements keep giving good ones. But he is always in the side when fit. I can't understand it really. Maybe this time Manqilo will keep him out but not if past precedent is going to repeat.

Despite all the great advice, impending price changes and silly ambition caused me to swap out mata, rooney and dzeko to falcao, Sturridge and Zaha for -4. leaves me with

    Bego
Jones, Clyne, Van Anholt, Taylor, Caulker
    Zaha, Ramsey, Sterling, Siggy, Albrighton
    Falcao, Sturridge, Costa.

Did i do bad? Have been doing so well by holding onto players so this feels like an error.

May as well chuck my team up here and see what people think...

    Krul - Elliot
    Terry - Caulker - Clyne - Chester - Hutton
    Fabregas - Sterling - Ramsey - Siggy - Marney
    Adebayor - Rooney - Jovetic

    1FT... 2.2 ITB...

Current plan is Caulker + Jovetic > PVA + Costa... Thoughts DZ?

Are you saying that you will sacrifice Caulker? Isn't that sacrilege?

I had thought of that, but PVA's stats are great and I'd like to keep Terry in there for an easy swap to Coleman/Baines in a few weeks.

          Not a bad thought.
I just can't escape the idea that Chelsea defenders are over-priced (though ivanovic owners would likely disagree.)
A 6.0 might not be too much more difficult to upgrade to Baines/Coleman than Terry would be, and you could take advantage of liverpool'fixtures in the mean time.

Yeah he's nailed, Davies, Dawson and Chester will be the preferred back 3. Caulker was always a short term punt for me, he'll no doubt get a goal soon but he seems the best option to downgrade from my back line. I want to keep Chester in there - I reckon Hull will have a great season.

I can't say that it looks bad. I just don't know about burning the wc so early, though.
Your current team can't be bad enough to merit playing the biggest trump card that you have, can it?
Also, if you wc is not already active, then you've missed out on many potential double-risers. Better to play the wc when you can take full advantage.

Great team, but it won't give you the edge over the top players (pretty standard). Saving for b4 next int. break prior GW8 will give you more advantages, plus time to reassess the new signings n formation. Fixts take a turn by then as well. Meanwhile you can take some little risks. Just my opinion.

Reporting from yesterday, in case it helps more people:

How to build your wc team:

    Step 1 - essentials

After much consideration and deliberation I have reached the conclusion that there are only two absolute essential players in FPL now:

    Costa
    Siggy

    That's it.

Step 2 - one of each

Now you start adding people by groups:

You can have one of fab/haz
You can have one of Ramsey/welbeck/Sanchez
You can have one of sterling/Sturridge/baloteli
You can have one or two of Ivan/debuchy/Moreno
You can have one of Rooney/falcao/ADM
You can have one of collochini/krul/jammat
You can have cone of clyne/Bertrand/ forester
You can even have a differential between tadic/lamella/mirallas

    Step 2 - cheap defenders

Choose 2 to 3 more good cheap defenders from this group:

PVA Chester collo naylor duff Ferdinand

Step 4 choose your cheap attacking players according to money left -

One of Naismith, zaha, boyd etc.
Oh, and don't forget a second gk.

    Step 5

    Al done. Enjoy

This still allows you double ups - like Sturridge and Moreno, costa and fabregas and more.
However, it does not lend itself to doubling up on shady fixtures (arsenal) or week for (united).

Appreciate the time in putting this together ... but doesn't leave much room for imagination. It's a great guide to building a template, however most teams now have the same 6-10 players and will be looking for the "next best thing".

My hint for the "next best thing" - Jones from Burnley, Berahino & Downing.

Yes, it not a super original team - yet with some room to shine - like choosing your differential player, your cheap mid or your expensive defender.

Hmmm...it depends WHEN you play your WC though.

I don't plan to have any United players for example and will def have one "marquee" defender.

or in other words, how to build a template wildcard team

there are a myriad of defensive options that haven't born fruit yet because... IT'S WEEK THREE

use the ticker, double up and double down according to fixtures, especially in midfield

only thing I agree with is Step 1. I would have put Ramsey in there as well, but Welbeck at 6.9/7 changes everything.

Planning this before reading this but it was helpful:

      Debuchy > Moreno
      Kolarov > Azpilicueta
Clyne > Rose (or Davies if his injury keeps him out, then back in a couple of games)
      Mata > Sterling
      Mutch > JWP / Arfield
      Rooney > Falcao

for a final WC lineup of

      Begovic - Krul
      Azpilicueta - Moreno - Rose - Chester - Naylor
      Ramsey - Fabregas - Sterling - Siggy - JWP / Arfield
      Naismith - Falcao - Costa

Is there usually this many template teams? Feel a bit cheated to be honesy . Over three works the majority of my league has slowly morphed into having the same team as me and I'd guess its similar for most people?

    Krul
    PVA
    Moreno
    Ivan
    Fabregas
    Sterling
    Ramsey
    Siggy
    Costa

Have all seemed to have found their way into my opponents teams. Have significant ownership many over 40 percent but I have not been rewarded in terms of value in my eyes.

Yes my start has been good but I have literally maybe 40 points on people and +1m maybe but it doesn't feel enough as it is seemingly going to be very difficult to get much differential as the values are letting people just get the scoring players in?

The transfer window has helped improving the options a touch, it just feels depressing looking at my league seeing teams with 11, 12. 10 of the same players as me when they started with Mata DDG Sanchez Terry Giriud Dzekonetc etc

    1. Bolivian Seaman
      • 13 Years
      9 years, 8 months ago

fabs, siggy, ramsey, sterling = template midfield

You got to win on differentials in defence and attack. Most people have naismith along with costa. So it only gives you 1 striker to be different. Defence is the differential.

Btw Sturridge is the best out of falcao/balo/dzeko etc imo 🙂

Be brave and get some differentials in then. Saints have good fixtures. Pelle perhaps? Falcao and Balotelli possibly? Get creative. Peoples teams will change a lot over the season. The trick is to get them in early before a good run of fixtures. All teams are looking a bit uniform at the mo. Be grateful you've had a good start and money in the bank. It's far harder to chase down a lead than to maintain one.

    4. Joggers Nipple
      • 14 Years

      Kind of agree with you
Krul in most teams in my league
PVA in most teams in my league
Moreno not in most teams in my league
Ivan not in most teams in my league
Fabregas in most teams in my league
Sterling in most teams in my league
Ramsey in most teams in my league
Siggy in most teams in my league
Costa in most teams in my league

      Can easily change though
      Eriksoon
      Lamella
      Aguro
      Sturridge
      Welbeck
      Falcao
      RVP
      Rooney
      Di Maria
      Silva
      Toure
      Mario
      Mata

All these players have the potential to score big in the future. When they do it all mixes again, just try to be ahead of your rivals with one or two punts when fixtures look nice or form start s to pick up. Also not being afraid to drop a 'season keeper' when they drop form is key too

Yeh it's only 3 games out of 38. I'm on wc this week and will bring in a few of those guys but there's plenty of value to be had, just need the foresight to be adventurous. Eg: Silva is a decent differential and could turn it on anytime.

Hutton won't be of much use soon but using an FT on him right now would be waste.

Nothing seems wrong in the team. Only criticism I could do is that you can have a better rotation for the cheap defenders.

Jovetic maybe not the best option. I think if all City strikers are fit Jovetic doesn't play. Also I wouldn't like having DDG. If a goalkeeper costs 5.5 I expect him to get clean sheets almost every other game, unlikely with him. Switch to Krul at some later stage, I understand you won't want to waste a transfer on that just yet with United's decent fixtures. Otherwise great team.

Thanks a lot, as you said I don't think getting rid of De Gea before Leicester and QPR makes sense...

I'd really like to remove Jovetic, but I'm 0.1 off getting Ade 🙁
        Which leaves me with Pelle/Naismith/Welbeck

I'd definitely consider Pelle and Welbck, but if I had to choose I'd go for Pelle just at this moment. Would like to see how Welbeck integrates into the team before buying him, but he is firmly on my watchlist. Pelle also has favourable fixtures to come.

            But would you

            a) hold Jovetic now and get Welbeck later for the fixtures (gameweek8)
            OR
            b) sell Jovetic now and get Pelle for the fixtures, and get Welbeck later (gameweek8)

Chelsea midfielders are taking points away from each other, IMO, to be worth the investment, is my thinking atm. Ramsey has tough fixtures coming as well. These two points plus my need to rid of Dzeko is making me consider these swaps..

        This.

Wait till the internationals get over. You might have some new decisions to make after that.

Walker has undergone lower abdominal surgery. how long will he be out with that kind of surgery? Miss Facer...

Lower abdominal surgery sounds like a hernia possibly. That'd be a month of rest then X number of weeks to gain match fitness again

Aspiring Dr.* 🙂 And this is best case scenario, I think. If there's a muscle damage or a tear, might be out longer. Or shorter, if none of the above

    WC Team
    Krul Guzan
    Ivanovic Moreno Clyne Duff Moore
    Ramsey Sterling Fab Siggy Marney
    Costa Falcao Naismith

    1.2 ITB.

Trying to decide between Falcao, Rooney, Sturridge and Aguero. Already have Liverpool coverage with Sterling so I'm leaning towards a united striker with a GW 6 switch to Aguero. With Rooney not being very convincing I have Falcao as my #1 choice at the moment.

    Any advice?

Having coverage don't matter IMO. I had Yaya for two gameweeks as a Man City cover, what I got, nothing....
Maybe you can start with Aguero instead of Falcao, why waste a transfer later on, he can perform against any side...

Get a better 5th mid or a 3rd striker who can play every week.

I'd sell Ivanovic as I still don't think he'll keep up with those attacking returns. I'm a chelsea fan and I know that after we conceded 3 goals against Everton, Mou would tighten the defence even more and that'll means less rampaging runs by Ivanovic.

Thanks, I do have Aguero on my team at the moment (got him before the price rise) but was thinking of switching to someone with better fixtures. I got Ivanovic at 7M so I could sell for a profit but I prefer to keep given his form.

After a lot of tinkering, did Mata ➡ Sterling.
1FT still left, next one I need to get rid of Davis. Not sure I should use it or wait.
I think I'll wait this week & decide on Boyd as my 5th mid. Tempted to bring Ivanovic IN bt I am afraid I missed the train already. Terry will score odd goals as well, could be this week..Hopefully! 🙂

    Currently looks like:

    Begovic- Gilks
    Terry-Clyne-PVA-NTaylor-Chester
    Haz-Ramsey-Sterling-Siggy-Davis*
    Costa-Rooney-Jelavic

Looking forward to injury-free International break for my squad.

I'd get Ivan in at any cost. He's gonna score huge for Chelsea this year.

I'm a chelsea fan and I know that after we conceded 3 goals against Everton, Mou would tighten the defence even more and that'll means less rampaging runs by Ivanovic.

Even during the game when we had the ball and were attacking, Mou was shouting at the defenders to stay back and be in positions.

Defensively Chelsea were not good enough specially for the Naismith goal which could have been easily avoided.

He was offside too 😉 But seriously, other teams will mark him more. Swansea have a 5 man midfield, he's playing arsenal and chelsea in the next 4. I'm going to miss out on him, I know I've missed the boat
