Moving Target

Moving Target – Wilfried Zaha

Crystal Palace secured their fifth signing of the summer last week by re-acquiring fans’ favourite Wilfried Zaha on loan from Man United. The deal seems to have already galvanised a squad whose chances of remaining in the Premier League looked bleak after the shock departure of Tony Pulis in pre-season. Zaha made an instant impact last weekend, coming on as a substitute to score a crucial goal in the 3-3 draw with Newcastle, and he hopes to build on his strong start in the coming weeks:

“I had to make the move here because I wasn’t getting minutes on the pitch, so coming back here will definitely push my career forward. Since I came back, I’ve been comfortable and everyone has shown me love around the place. All I need to do is get settled again and get playing. It’s always great to play and I feel at home doing that here with players I’ve played with before. I haven’t really played too much, so coming off the bench I don’t mind because I’m getting my fitness back. But I’m definitely looking forward to starting a few games.”

Another old face is replacement manager Neil Warnock, who has backed the 21-year-old despite enduring an unsuccessful spell at Manchester United:

“Maybe at that top level they wonder if they can rely on him, but he just needs to be given that bit of freedom. I’ve heard one or two say his attitude is not so good, but for me, it’s fantastic. He was so keen [to come here].”

THE HISTORY

A product of the Palace youth system, Zaha became integral to their push for promotion to the Premier League in spite of his young age. After graduating from the academy to the first team in 2010 aged just 17, he enjoyed three successful seasons with the Eagles, racking up 110 appearances and 12 goals.

By the pre-season of 2010/11, Zaha had already established himself as a starter but scored just one goal that year. He won Palace’s Young Player of the Year, though, and caught fire the following campaign, impressing in the League Cup giant-killing of Manchester United and winning The Football League’s Young Player of the Year award, having played 48 times, scoring nine goals and providing five assists.

In January 2013, Manchester United agreed to pay £10 million for the winger on the basis that he would return immediately to Palace for the remainder of the season. He scored twice in the Championship play-off semi-final and won the penalty that secured Palace’s spot in the Premier League in the final.

Sadly his opportunities at United were limited and, when given chances, he was unimpressive. After just two appearances at Old Trafford, Zaha was loaned to Cardiff City by David Moyes last season, where he made ten appearances but failed to score.

Zaha was born in the Ivory Coast but moved to South London aged four and opted to play for England. He has played at every International level, including 13 caps and a goal for the England U21s, and debuted for the senior side in a friendly against Sweden in 2012 as an 83rd-minute substitute.

THE PROSPECTS

Zaha’s weekend goal seemed to be a result of the free reign he was given by Warnock after climbing off the bench at St James’ Park – he could have scored a hat trick in his brief 28-minute cameo. While he was officially played in the centre, he terrorised the Toon defence from all angles, managing seven touches and four shots within the penalty area, three of which were on target.

Jason Puncheon was initially preferred on the right but given his personal history with Warnock, his goal and assist in two appearances may be overlooked to give Zaha a starting role on his favoured right side. Another possibility would see Yannick Bolasie dropped and either Puncheon or Zaha fielded on the left – the Frenchman is yet to register a shot on target in three games and had the most attempts in the league without scoring last year. Zaha is also versatile enough to play through the middle, though, and with Marouane Chamakh potentially sidelined for up to a month, he could tuck in behind a lone forward if Warnock opts for a lone forward system.

Yet to register a win, Palace are hardly a horse to back heavily but after netting three times in Warnock’s first match at the helm, there’s a feeling that they may go on the offensive more often this season. The arrival of central midfielder James McArthur from Wigan for a club record £7 million is set to boost their creativity in the centre of the park and while we may not look upon their defence in the same regard as last season under Tony Pulis, there attacking assets may well be worth contemplating.

At 5.4 in FPL, Zaha is cheaper than Puncheon (6.0) and, like Warnock, has plenty to prove in his second stint at Selhurst Park – upcoming home clashes with Burnley and Leicester in the next three look particularly prosperous and certainly offer the youngster the chance to carry on from his impressive St James’ Park showing.

I mean Yoshida will literally not play again unless Toby or Fonte get injured so it's your call. If you don't want to switch Pieters then look for a new 4.5 😉

There are a few decent 4.5ers. Do you have Naylor, PVA or anyone from Leicester or Burnley?

    So here's my lot:

    ..................Begovic
    .....Ivanovic - Clyne - Hutton
    Fabregas - Yaya - Ramsey - Siggy
    .....Naismith - Rooney - Costa

    Gilks; Chambers, Marney, Baird

0 FT (haven't taken a hit yet) and 0.7m itb

I could easily just not take a hit and play this for GW4 but Moreno, Sterling, Di Maria, Aguero, and Falcao are all tempting me to do some form of a -8 and leave the 3rd transfer for the following week..

talk me off the ledge or urge me to jump..thoughts?

I think playing with a budget striker right now is a little bit worrying just because of the influx of good forwards in the league at the moment.

I'm going to make Naismith into Welbeck but I need to plan out how that affects my defense as I wanted to get Moreno for Chambers and swap out Baird (maybe just for another 4m like Duff/Moore)

  5. Welbeck Position and Points Analysis

So a lot of the WC RMT’s seem to be taking a punt on Welbeck and with Giroud being out for 4 months he should start up front and at 6.9m that seems pretty good for an Arsenal forward. On paper Welbeck’s goal record isn’t too impressive with 20 goals in 90 appearances, although having played a lot of games on the wing I thought I’d have see how he did when he did get the chance up front and its tempted me.

    Overall 2011-12, 2012-13 & 2013-14 seasons:

    Wing/Left+Right

    Overall Mins - 1711
    Mins per goal - 855 (2 goals)
Shots in the box per 90 - 1.84
    Shots on target per 90 - 0.68
    Assists per 90 - 0.26 (5 assists)
    Chances created per 90 - 1.79

    Striker/Central

    Overall Mins - 3110
    Mins per goal - 182 (17 goals)
Shots in the box per 90 - 3.04
    Shots on target per 90 - 1.36
    Assists per 90 - 0.23 (8 assists)
    Chances created per 90 - 0.98

It’s maybe obvious that when Welbeck starts up front he is more of a goal threat compared to when he starts on the wing, but the difference is huge! Welbeck played just 63% of his Utd gametime up front yet scored 17 of his 19 goals from that position and has had about twice as many shots on goal. His 1:2 game to goal ratio is decent but looking closer at the stats for last season there is also some more promise for next season.

    2012-13 Season

    Wing/Left+Right

    Overall Mins - 480
Mins per goal - Didn’t score (0 goals)
Shots in the box per 90 - 1.5
    Shots on target per 90 - 0.56
    Assists per 90 - 0.19 (1 assist)
    Chances created per 90 - 0.56

    Striker/Central

    Overall Mins - 1000
    Mins per goal - 111 (9 goals)
Shots in the box per 90 - 2.88
    Shots on target per 90 - 1.44
    Assists per 90 - 0.27 (3 assists)
    Chances created per 90 - 0.9

Moyes didn’t get much right in his time as manager but he did manage to get some improvement out of Welbeck who got just one league goal the season before. Welbeck got his chance to start up front with Rooney whilst van Persie was sidelined for a large chunk of the season and he managed a goal every 111 mins, which when put alongside all the PL strikers (1000+ mins) he would surprisingly sit 3rd behind Suarez and Sturridge. I don’t think for a second he’ll be able to match the attacking returns of the SAS and with the restricted gametime you definitely have to be cautious with the data but they are pretty promising figures nevertheless. He would also be ranked 7th highest for shots in the box per 90 and 8th for shots on target per 90 mins which is also a good indicator he wasn’t ‘lucky’.

    2011-12 & 2012-13 seasons

Already got carried away so I won’t post all the stats for these but 2012-13 was well documented as being a poor season for Welbeck as he managed just 1 goal in around 1300 minutes. The arrival of van Persie reduced Welbeck to just 400 minutes up front meaning he spent 70% of the season on the left flank where he proved ineffective.
In the 2011-12 season he returned to Man Utd after a season long loan at Sunderland and played 1700 minutes up front, scoring every 213 minutes which is a fair bit longer than last seasons total but still respectable (the two strikers nearest that figure last season are Benteke and Lambert)

There are still other options for Arsenal up front so it remains to be seen whether he will definitely get more gametime up front but if he does then I think he’s definitely worth a punt. There is a chance he could still be used on the left (Ozil played there last game) and if thats the case then I think its pretty safe to ignore him as a fantasy prospect.

    Sturridge

    Danny Welbeck League Stats:

Danny's move to Arsenal looks to be a very good fantasy football prospect, as this will enable him to play in his preferred position, as a centre forward. This is the position where the majority of his goal involvement comes from.

    13/14: 25 appearances, 1,461 minutes, 9 goals, 4 assists.
    Playing as a striker: 15 appearances, 975 minutes, 9 goals, 3 assists.

    12/13: 27 appearances, 1,301 minutes, 1 goal, 4 assists.
Playing as a striker: 11 appearances, 336 minutes, 1 assist.

    11/12: 30 appearances, 2,009 minutes, 9 goals, 5 assists.
    Playing as a striker: 24 appearances, 1,636 minutes, 8 goals, 5 assists.

    Total: 82 appearances, 4,771 minutes, 19 goals, 13 assists.
    Playing as a striker: 62.5% appearances, 61.76% minutes, 89.47% goals, 69.23% assists.

Even though something like this has already been posted, I thought I'd post it anyway as it took some time.

All good stuff. Would be great if he makes that spot up front his own, hopefully he doesn't find himself working off the flanks again.

I can't see that, with Arsenal having a lot of wingers and not enough forwards.

I agree that he should be up top, but Wenger's comments about Sanchez being brought in in to play as a striker are concerning... Welbeck will get plenty of games there, no doubt, but there's still the risk that he'll be rotated before we know for sure.

Sorry Sarj! Didn't realise we both had the same idea. I have never been a big Welbeck fan but the stats do show he seems to have been wasted out wide a little! You going to get him in your team?

For A, are you comfortable playing Naismith every week? If no, then B. If yes, then A. I'd get Krul to save some cash. Also Hutton's fixtures are terrible say maybe Duff/Moore is a better option. I'd go Ramsey over Silva regardless of what you do.

Stoke's fixtures are excellent though. Happy to play Naismith every week but really want Wellbeck as my gut tells me to whilst i can.

For me Wellbeck = long term, Naismith doesn't. Won't be able to afford Wellbeck if his price goes up.

Maybe Ramsey > Silva after Arsenal and Chelsea fixtures

Newcastle's fixtures are pretty solid the next few weeks as well. I like Welbeck better long-term as well, so maybe just get him now if you don't have a plan to get him later.

      Rooney -> Falcao
      Mata -> Sterling

Have to do it soon to afford it.. But dangerous to do it this early in the int break..
Think you want Falcao for the long run, so why not get him straight away..

Is it silly to bring in Balotelli simply because I find his antics hilarious and would be extra happy every time he scores?

        1 FT.

What do we think of Mata + Naismith + Rooney > Siggy + Welbeck + Falcao for a -8?

Or the first two for a -4?

Or save it till after GW4?

Eventually yes. Can see Sanchez up top Wally and Welbz on the wings Ozil central when they are all fully fit. Given Wenger's seeming insistence that he bought Sanchez to play up top this could very well be his preferred attack I think.

He said he bought Sanchez to not only play on the wing. Clearly Wenger wants presence up front, as shown by playing Sanogo, and that would be Welbeck IMO.

I agree Welbeck should play up top now no question about it but when Wally is back he will have a dilemma. Could be just that they have license to roam and interchange between positions though so really may not be much in it.

Our attacking options always start off well, but by the time Theo is back, half our team will be injured. 😉

Nope. Would be mad to play a striker on the wing, and a winger as a striker.

Sanchez is not a number 9 (but thinks he is)

Welbeck is not a winger (but cant be trusted in front of goal either)

Unlikely. Too much ownership, would need a massive number to get rid to drop by 0.2

Very unlikely, I'd say. With his ownership that is the best part of 400k net sales required for 2 drops this week. Currently at 25k out per day but that will slow down to a crawl before picking up again later next week.

Would you change anything about my team for GW 4?

        Krul Mannone
        Wisdom Terry Taylor (Chester Moore)
Fabregas Ramsey Henderson Siggy ( Marney )
        Costa Rooney Sturridge

        2 FT and 0.1 ITB

I have exactly the same team as you except I have Chambers + Caulker rather than Chester + Taylor!
Been so tempted with new signings, but think I might just ride out this GW and save the FT to wait and see how all the new signing fit in! No need to rush into WC 🙂

Looks very strong for the week. Maybe Marney to Boyd, but if Boyd doesn't displace Taylor, then it's a silly move. Can't see much else.
