Fantasy Premier League – Player List Analysis – Premium Defenders

Having assessed the goalkeepers, budget defenders and mid-price defenders over the last few days, we continue our look at the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) player list with an analysis of the premium backline options.

For this group of 6.0 and 6.5 priced players, FPL managers deserve the very best.

These players should offer a strong chance of a clean sheet, be assured of starts and have a significant attacking threat. They should also impress FPL’s Bonus Point System (BPS), which favours those who are accurate with passing and crossing and who contribute plenty of clearances, blocks and interceptions (CBI).

With 172 FPL points accrued, Arsenal’s Hector Bellerin (6.5) was in sensational form last season and is now among the game’s highest priced rearguard options. Across a raft of statistics, including five assists and 18 clean sheets, Bellerin ranked top amongst defenders and, if he can improve on his haul of a single goal, he looks destined to once again be a regular source of points at both ends of the pitch.

Bellerin is currently the most popular defender in FPL and sits in just under 30% of squads.

Gunners centre back Laurent Koscielny (6.0) offers a cheaper alternative, with heightened bonus potential and goal threat. Last season the France international was in the top ten for defenders in terms of CBI and scored four times, though he is currently less popular than his Spanish team-mate having been selected by 17% of FPL managers to this point.

Nacho Monreal could be an overlooked option. Owned by under 7% of FPL managers, he matched Bellerin for starts (36 apiece) last term and comes in at 6.0 – he was almost on a par with his fellow full-back for shots (12 to 13) and bettered him for key passes (29 to 23). Monreal’s performances last season relegated Kieran Gibbs (5.0) to a cameo role and we’re anticipating that trend to continue this term.

A strong early fixture list, which contains away ties with Watford, Hull and Burnley in the first seven Gameweeks, certainly promotes the case to include an Arsenal heavyweight defender in your initial squad, though one of Per Mertesacker or Gabriel (both at 5.0) could provide value options here if either can nail down a starting role.

Tottenham’s Toby Alderweireld keeps Bellerin company at the 6.5 price point and is currently second to the Gunners’ man in terms of ownership (25%).

With 166 FPL points, the Belgian was last season’s second-highest ranked defender, thanks to four goals from 40 goal attempts – only Sunderland’s Patrick Van Aanholt had more shots on goal from the back.

Alderweireld’s bonus point potential is also strong, particularly in terms of CBI, where he was 2015/16’s third best performer.

We should also expect clean sheets: no side conceded fewer goals than Spurs last season, with 13 shut outs accrued.

Danny Rose (6.0) offers a slightly cheaper alternative, but with fellow Spurs full back Kyle Walker priced 0.5 cheaper his appeal is greatly reduced this season. As mentioned previously, we’re also expecting Spurs to rotate at full-back around Champions League ties; it’s hoped that Alderweireld will be immune to that.

Under new Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho, Chris Smalling (6.0) has the potential to improve on 2015/16’s FPL point tally of 135.

He’s expected to remain a mainstay in central defence having been pivotal to the Red Devils achieving 18 clean sheets last season. Smalling was also among the top three defenders for winning aerial duels, and in the top five in terms of interceptions.

With Luke Shaw looking particularly appealing at 5.5, though, Smalling – who is suspended for the opener at Bournemouth – will have to improve his attacking output to convince he’s worth the extra outlay – he mustered just a single assist last season.

Chelsea’s backline have been handed reduced prices as a result of last season’s nine clean sheets.

Cesar Azpilicueta (6.0) has all the ingredients for success under new manager Antonio Conte. Last season he was second among defenders in terms of successful tackling as well as third for passes in the final third. If Conte opts for a 3-5-2 formation, Azpilicueta could be given even more license to attack and add to his tally of three assists and two goals.

So far in pre-season, though, Conte has preferred a back four, which could force a reassessment in his likely starters.

Both Branislav Ivanovic and Gary Cahill also set you back 6.0 and the Serbian, in particular, could be one to monitor if he can retain a starting berth and reprise the form that served up four goals and six assists in the Blues’ 2014/15 title-winning season.

Again, though, there are likely to be cheaper options, with Kurt Zouma (5.5) certainly one to consider when he returns to action in September.

Man City trio Vincent Kompany, Aleksandar Kolarov and Nicolas Otamendi are the remaining premium options for our five-man defences.

All three are priced at 6.0 apiece, though, arguably, Otamendi looks the safest bet at present. Although Kompany is believed to be winning his fitness race ahead of the new season, the Belgian’s abysmal injury record dents his appeal – despite sitting joint-top for points per match (5.4) at the back last year, he was restricted to just 14 appearances.

Kolarov, meanwhile, could drop behind Gael Clichy in the pecking order – a 78.7% pass accuracy last term was lower than any City defender, which hardly bodes well for his role in Pep Guardiola’s possession-based tactics.

Despite scoring just once in 2015/16, Otamendi’s tally of 21 efforts inside the penalty area was bettered by only four other defenders, highlighting his aerial threat in and around the box.

Much depends on Guardiola’s restructuring, though, given that John Stones continues to be heavily linked with a move to City. At a price of just 5.0, there’s no doubt that Stones would be heavily targeted by Fantasy managers should he roll up at the Etihad and offer a secure route into a defence that racked up 16 shut-outs in the previous campaign.

6/10 because of JT, Lamela, Bolasie, Rooney. Perhaps you could have Azpi, Alli, Townsend, Wilson instead? I can see all of the latter outscoring the former

      6/10 but bold picks imo
Kante will get you nothing except 2 points, might as well take 4.5 who'll do the same. Cabaye will play a withdrawn role unless there is a set piece. Better off taking Gradel, Bolasie, Townsend. Not convinced about Rhodes. Better options in that bracket would be Long/Austin, Wilson, Gray or Negredo. Ozil has difficult fixtures in the beginning, and Giroud or Sanchez probably wont start the season. Look at Siggurdson, Firminio, Mahrez, Eriksen to start with. Tadic and Mane are brave picks tho, I like.
Lastly, NO AGUERO WHAT IS THIS TEAM.

Hit me with what you've got

    De Gea- Jakupovic
    Shaw-McAuley-Baines-Friend-Souare
    KDB-Siggurdson-Firminio-Townsend-Watson
    Aguero-Lukaku Long

I was on Hazard and Gray but bought in Lukaku and Siggy instead because it offers more balance to the team and Hazard might play in a more withdrawn role in a 4-4-2. Siggy has Burnley and Hull in the first 2 weeks but not so great fixtures from there on. No United and Chelsea cover up top. Not convinced about the United attack yet (Zlatan, Mkhi and Martial) so I'll wait and watch. No Costa or Hazard. Answer a few questions and reasons for the same please -
    1) Costa or Lukaku
    2) Thoughts on Firminio, Siggy and Townsend? Any sugestions for these slots?
    3) Who is the best 6.5 striker
    4) I am very tempted to get Azpi in somehow but I can only afford 2 premium defenders. Should I stick/do De Gea to Courtious, or do Shaw or Baines to Azpi??

      1) Lukaku out of the 2, although i d prefer Wilson and Deeney and use the cash to upgrade Townsend.
      2) All of them great value, Townsend for 6.5 is ok but i d try to find cash and upgrade
      3) Wilson
      4) Get Azpi for Shaw, it will take time for United to adjust to Mourinho's style imo.

Quite a common strategy, you prepare for the first 3 games weeks and try to get off to a good start. Then once options and lineups etc are more clear before the international break you wildcard in order to get on bandwagons, ride the price rises and pick a good long term team.

          Fair enough.

My comment on your team would be:

GK: Good keeper in solid team
Def: Not sure about Leicester defenders now that Kante has gone
          Mid: Looks decent
Att: Vardy is a gamble for me as I think Leicester will slide back into mid table.

Thanks, Leicester defender will be good for the first few weeks as they play Hull and have another good fixture aswell.
Vardy is playing Hull who are absolutely awful.

Here's my latest draft of my team (still waiting to see how the transfer window pans out for the likes of Stoke and Palace)

                Adrian / Heaton

                Shaw / Azpi / Monreal / Friend / Pieters

                Hazard / Eriksen / Firmino / Townsend* / Fletcher

                Aguero / Wilson / Berahino**

                *If Benteke/Berahino joins Palace

                **If he joins Stoke/Palace

Tried to stick with tried and tested players who are experienced in the Prem

Too much is invested in keepers get that down to 9m for sure. Midfield is good but Firmino has poor fixtures but can understand the appeal. Forward line is a bit too weak and Benteke isn't joining palace, get one of those striker to a 8.5/9 striker atleast for better balance.
Would downgrade one of your 4.5s to a 4 as they wont play and maybe Azpi to Terry.

My team is for the first 3 weeks so Terry is fine. I agree re Leicester but they have really good fixtures for their first 3 games and play an awful Hull team. Hull have 13 fit players, no manager, a ton of injuries and a lot of average players.

Talented, but hasn't really done much for a couple of years.

Prefer Callum Wilson who looked v.good before his injury last year.

Berahino might be worth a punt if he can tie up a deal with Stoje or Palace.

Personally Wolfman I think Soton might slide down now that Koeman and Mane have gone.

Just don't see anything in Negredo's recent record to suggest he's going to be worth a punt in England.

As for Wilson he's got a 1 in 2 ish scoring record for Bournemouth and started last year brilliantly before his injury.

It's not nailed he'll succeed, but he's got a lot going for him.

You pays your money though so you take your choice, fella.

My philosophy with these cheapie strikers is that I hop from one to the other on the basis of form and fixtures which actually gets me 20 goals from my 3rd striker if the timing of my changes is right. Who do reckon I should start with? I'm looking at the first 6 odd weeks here

People believe he can regain the form he started to show just before his dreadful injury; and are looking more long term as opposed to just the first 5 games or so.

Better pick than Gray because he has at least priced he can score at the top level. Long has never been that prolific in the top flight; as for Austin, if he can nail down a starting berth could be the best pick of all of them.

Negredo is a wait-and-see for me.

Cresswell injured out for awhile I think. Maybe a 4.5 for him instead and upgrade borini. That midfield looks amazing thinking of 352 rather than 343 myself. I rather Kun but hard to argue with Ibra scoring record he is getting on in years though.

        RMT Please

        De Gea - Ben Foster
Ward -Shaw - Walker - Friend - McAuley
Sanchez - KDB - Miky - Willian - De pena (from Buro)
        Sturridige -Austin - Rondon

What do you think? Too much West Brom? Need stronger defenders/strikers?
        Thanks!

I would downgrade that GK and defence by about 2 mil and upgrade borini. Double up on UTD defence? not sure on this.

GK is fine if Fealy removes shaw. 1.5-2m off of your defence.

Ideally your three most expensive defenders should not exceed 16.0 (assuming you are going for a strong defence)

    RMT

    Valdes
Van Aanholt - Alderweireld - Koscielny - Shaw
    Mkhi - Coutinho - Kante
    Gray - Aguero - Sturridge

    Would prefer KDB over Coutinho
    Would prefer Ibra over Sturbridge
And want to take out Coutinho
