The Knee Jerk – Gameweek 3 – Sunday

This was meant to be the day that would see talent from the north London clubs cause tremors in the Fantasy Premier League ranks and market place. Instead, both Spurs and Arsenal fell flat – to varying degrees of disaster.

Harry Kane had the opportunity to transform the Fantasy Football landscape. Not only could he have buried the August goal hoodoo, but he could also have delivered points for the 16.1% who captained him to capitalise on the failings of others – including Romelu Lukaku’s zero point score.

Once again he blanked. Once again the numbers he produced defied belief.

Kane had ten attempts on goal, seven from inside the box. For the second match running, he has surpassed his personal record for the number of shots in a single Premier League match without scoring.

This season Kane has fired just 25% of his efforts on target with a zero conversion rate. His rates for both in 2016/17 were 52% and 26% respectively.

According to certain statistical models, he should have 2.5 goals by now. But he hasn’t. He’s got nothing, and he’s being ushered out of FPL squads at a pace.

To compound matters, both Chelsea’s Alvaro Morata and Roberto Firmino of Liverpool provided goal and assist returns with maximum bonus to overtake Lukaku in the forward standings.

They provide an obvious exit route for those left feeling decidedly uneasy about Kane’s extraordinary three-match drought.

Dismissing talk of the August “curse”, there is perhaps another reason behind this sorry spell: maybe Spurs really are destined to struggle at Wembley.

We have just two “home” matches to go on – the first against the champions Chelsea, while it should also be noted that Spurs only edged out Burnley 2-1 at White Hart Lane last season.

However, there is building momentum behind the theory that Mauricio Pochettino’s men could lack intensity and that sides will raise their game on visiting Wembley.

With Swansea City and Bournemouth the next two opponents due to arrive, we will surely have more evidence soon. Falter against that pair, and our confidence in Kane and Spurs’ other key assets – Christian Eriksen and Dele Alli – will plummet.

While it’s a testing trip to Everton to come next, those forthcoming home fixtures, coupled with the unfeasible and record-breaking numbers – may convince many Kane owners to sit on their hands, even when faced with cheaper and more profitable temptations.

Spurs toiled, but their suffering pales in significance next to the cataclysmic display delivered by Arsenal at Anfield.

Like Kane, Alexis Sanchez had the opportunity to put Fantasy managers in a spin. Instead, he played a 60-minute role in a farcical Gunners performance which may actually transpire to be his last for the club.

It remains to be seen if Sanchez stays in the Premier League to be a factor in our season. For now, he played his part in making Liverpool’s attacking assets seem irresistible, as the aforementioned Firmino pulled the strings for both Sadio Mane and Mo Salah to step up with further hauls.

It appears that there is still one thing we can all rely on as Fantasy managers: Liverpool will present us with the dilemma of putting many attacking eggs in a single basket.

With Kane – our most bankable scorer currently defying all odds to misfire – perhaps we should just embrace that “problem”.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Ideally want to WC for GW7 international break, but thinking that it may be necessary to WC now. The team is:
    Foster Elliot
    Kolasinac* Bertrand Jones*? Daniels* Suttner*
    Mkhitaryan Ramsey* JWP* Gross*
    Lukaku Kane* Firmino

The temptation is always there to wildcard after a shite gameweek before an international break.

I always wildcard after GW3 anyway so I'm pulling the trigger.

Help needed, not that happy with my team.

    Foster/Elliott
    Kolasinac/Davies/Jones/Mee/Long
    Eriksen/Salah/Ritchie/JWP/Carroll
    Kane/Lukaku/Gabbi

What would you change? Would you use WC or wait? Thanks!

Thoughts on this team? Used my FT to get Salah in for DeBruyne before he dropped. It leaves me with 5.0 ITB at the moment
    Foster (Elliot)
    Bertrand, Stones*, Davies (Suttner, long)
    Eriksen, Salah, Mkhitaryan, Atsu (TCarrol)
    Chica, Gabbi, Lukaku.

With 5 mill i have some options if i take a hit or two.
Looking at getting rid of Stones and Gabbi probably.

Stones and Gabbi -> Alonso and Morata/Firminho (leaves me with 0,4 or 1.9 ITB) good moves?

That's why they're currently in the top ten, because they haven't suffered from his disappointing start.

But will they stay in the top ten once he starts scoring?

Similarly the number of Kane owners in the current top thousand overall is low - but they are unlikely to still be in the top thousand at the end of the season.

        1. Captain Roberto
          • 6 Years

          What?

You seem to be assuming those without Kane wont sign him when he outscores their own assets, if indeed he does.
If Kane starts scoring more than their current forward picks they will transfer him across. Unless, of course, they stick with assets that are not scoring. Which if that is your argument is hugely ironic.

I'm just assuming that the players without Kane are likely to have more points so far than the ones with Kane.

So the fact that they are currently in the top ten of your mini-league is more likely to be because they got lucky that Kane hasn't scored many points yet than because they are better players.

Kane's ownership is currently rather higher amongst experienced players. Most of the leading players in our Hall of Fame do own Kane and are currently languishing around the one million mark. That doesn't make them poor players -they've just been a bit unlucky so far - and I expect most of them to be ahead of most of those currently in the top thousand by the end of the season.

25 shots doesn't say anything. Stats can be misleading. If you watch the games, you'll know he's just been decent so far, nothing extraordinary. I didn't watch the Burnley game but in the first two games, except for the shots that hit the post, no shot had any realistic chance of going in. They were all straight at the keeper or off-target.

No, an explosion is not imminent, by the looks of it. But he does look a great option from GW5.

Shots are only shots, if they are not getting in it means Kane is either wasteful or his chances are not big/not clear... In both cases it means he is too much expensive for his output.

I had him captain 3 weeks and am now at 2.5m OR, worst ever start. I sold him with Mounie for Morata and Firmino, who jointly will surely match him with Mounie. Of this changes, I'll readjust on WC.

Casuals vs vets - subjective guess at best.
"Mad men" - subjective call, seeing that they are doing the opposite of the post writer.
Explosion has been imminent for three GWs now, So, no, "we" do not all know it. The curse is bullshit. But the inefficiency of Kane is not.

      That post makes zero sense.

Removing a highly priced asset who is not on form for one that is is exactly how you should play this game. Waiting on an asset to produce after weeks of blanks is daft.

A few people said the same thing about daftness before Agüero played Newcastle in 2015. http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/34366600

Many veterans see 'form' as less important than shots, and Kane is shooting like Agüero did before his 25 point game.

Any more than one example to back up this position?

Aguero had not scored in 5 leagie games preceding that match. He then went on to score once in the next ten leagie matches.

Basically, your argument there is nonsense.

The plural of anecdote is data.

After January he got over his two injuries and scored zillions of goals. Having him in your side around the 5 goal haul would not have scored you many points (as he has two injuries, and his 5 goals were an unpredictable one off). I would suspect the "veterans" would have transferred him out and then back in again in January once he'd scored his first returning goal. If anyone can say they knew it would happen against Newcastle then I'd like to see their betting slip for that weekend.

Of course nobody knew it was going to happen, but a lot of FFS users weren't too surprised by it and many of us captained Agüero that day. The games around that one were dismal but at least his owners got a bit of fun compensation.

It's not fun to hold Kane for the blanks, but hindsight is 20/20 and those blanks can't be undone now. All we can do is look to the future and consider whether Kane will go on a scoring streak against Everton, Swansea, West Ham, Huddersfield and Bournemouth. I believe he will.

Thanks to that game he had still scored 5 in 6 though! I think I captained him twice in that crap run, but got 50 from him against Newcastle. It made up for the blanks beforehand and quite a few on FFS sold him shortly after it anyway.

Kane is another example, in the same month of that same season. One goal in 9 gameweeks became 7 goals in 4 gameweeks after his fixtures got better.

Mané in 2014/15 is a good example too. He had a dreadful run before gameweek 37, but those who persisted with him due to good stats were rewarded with a hattrick and assist against Villa.

There are plenty of examples of barren runs followed by huge explosions, and it's not nonsense to expect that Kane's explosion will come sooner rather than later.

By the way I think the plural of anecdote is 'anecdotes'. 😉

Yeah I remember that run he had. Think I captained him 3 or 4 times and it was killing my rank. That mega haul made up for it though- think I got 121 or something that week.

While we're talking about nonsense, Agüero going "on to score once in the next ten leagie matches" doesn't make much sense as an argument since he played no part in 7 of those 10 matches, due to an injury which made him irrelevant for weeks anyway.

I hear you but with tottenham not looking like the team of last 2 years plus all away matches thanks to wembley factor. Add to that he started with 12.5mm which is lot of money and can cover him with right choices

I don't agree with the use of terms 'vets' or 'casuals' as a sorting device for dividing players of the game into just 2 categories.
As responses to this post show, there are many players who simply selected a wk1 team without Kane and have been rewarded for their insight. Getting Kane remains an option, but refusal to sell doesnt make all those players who still hold Kane into more expert players of the game.

think those 2 freak matches at the end of last season created a monster. leicester started the match with only 1 centre back and played the last half hour with zero (in which time kane got another 2 goals and an assist). then hull were as dejected an opposition as you could possibly find at this level.

neither of those matches explain 3 blanks in a row, but they did create an expectation which he's arguably not capable of living up to

Kane is a season keeper. You only have to look at the last two years to see that. He does not need defending if he is in your ff team.

Most of the players at the top of the FPL tree will be nowhere near the top million by week 38. It's the same every year and their rookie mistakes soon get found out.

      Patience and keep calm.

    Thoughts on initial wildcard:

    Fabianski, Foster
    Stephens, Alonso, Naughton, Maguire, Lowe
    Redmond, Eriksen, Miki, Sanchez, Chalabah
    Morata, Firmino, Abraham

    0.5 itb..

Someone needs to tell the majority of fullbacks today that their main job is to defend. They seem very good (aka Alonso) when heir team is dominating, but when they're asked to defend (like Bellerin) theyre quite simply crap. Seems like Trippier didn't get that memo today about defending a lead either.

Alonso is a poor defender and attacker. You would never start him either as a full back or as a winger.

I remember when full backs never crossed the half way line in the seventies. Their main job was to redeive ball from the keeper and then pass it back to him...and repeat. Their second job was to be the worst player in the team.

      I'll keep Alonso.

Yeah. I'd keep Alonso too obviously but I'm referring to real life where a player is made to look so much better because of how good his team is. In reality, Alonso isn't a good defender imo

No he's not...but the game is changing.

Despite Gary neville's best efforts at persuading us that defending is the best way to play the notion of "we'll score one more goal than you" is definitely alive and kicking these days.

    Thoughts on this WC?

    Forster / Elliot
    Alonso / Naughton / Zanka / Hegazi / Mbemba
    Eriksen / Salah / Pogba / Atsu / Carroll
    Kaku / Morata / Firmino

    I've ditched the following:

    Kola / Dawson / Mason / Long / Bertrand / Begovic / Fraser / Mounie / Kane
