The Knee Jerk – Gameweek 3 – Sunday

This was meant to be the day that would see talent from the north London clubs cause tremors in the Fantasy Premier League ranks and market place. Instead, both Spurs and Arsenal fell flat – to varying degrees of disaster.

Harry Kane had the opportunity to transform the Fantasy Football landscape. Not only could he have buried the August goal hoodoo, but he could also have delivered points for the 16.1% who captained him to capitalise on the failings of others – including Romelu Lukaku’s zero point score.

Once again he blanked. Once again the numbers he produced defied belief.

Kane had ten attempts on goal, seven from inside the box. For the second match running, he has surpassed his personal record for the number of shots in a single Premier League match without scoring.

This season Kane has fired just 25% of his efforts on target with a zero conversion rate. His rates for both in 2016/17 were 52% and 26% respectively.

According to certain statistical models, he should have 2.5 goals by now. But he hasn’t. He’s got nothing, and he’s being ushered out of FPL squads at a pace.

To compound matters, both Chelsea’s Alvaro Morata and Roberto Firmino of Liverpool provided goal and assist returns with maximum bonus to overtake Lukaku in the forward standings.

They provide an obvious exit route for those left feeling decidedly uneasy about Kane’s extraordinary three-match drought.

Dismissing talk of the August “curse”, there is perhaps another reason behind this sorry spell: maybe Spurs really are destined to struggle at Wembley.

We have just two “home” matches to go on – the first against the champions Chelsea, while it should also be noted that Spurs only edged out Burnley 2-1 at White Hart Lane last season.

However, there is building momentum behind the theory that Mauricio Pochettino’s men could lack intensity and that sides will raise their game on visiting Wembley.

With Swansea City and Bournemouth the next two opponents due to arrive, we will surely have more evidence soon. Falter against that pair, and our confidence in Kane and Spurs’ other key assets – Christian Eriksen and Dele Alli – will plummet.

While it’s a testing trip to Everton to come next, those forthcoming home fixtures, coupled with the unfeasible and record-breaking numbers – may convince many Kane owners to sit on their hands, even when faced with cheaper and more profitable temptations.

Spurs toiled, but their suffering pales in significance next to the cataclysmic display delivered by Arsenal at Anfield.

Like Kane, Alexis Sanchez had the opportunity to put Fantasy managers in a spin. Instead, he played a 60-minute role in a farcical Gunners performance which may actually transpire to be his last for the club.

It remains to be seen if Sanchez stays in the Premier League to be a factor in our season. For now, he played his part in making Liverpool’s attacking assets seem irresistible, as the aforementioned Firmino pulled the strings for both Sadio Mane and Mo Salah to step up with further hauls.

It appears that there is still one thing we can all rely on as Fantasy managers: Liverpool will present us with the dilemma of putting many attacking eggs in a single basket.

With Kane – our most bankable scorer currently defying all odds to misfire – perhaps we should just embrace that “problem”.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

GW4 doesn't really have any stand out fixtures / captain options

Could be a lot of different captain choices

    Foster (Elliott)
Kolasinac - Danilo - Jones (Zanka, Long)
Mane - Alli - Willian - Pogba (Carroll)
    Lukaku - Chicharito - Firmino

I went Kane > Firmino for any price rises, then a change back (or swap Jesus for Kane) when his price falls... didn't fancy he'd score against Everton, but still think he'll come good soon.

Might regret doing that though, i wanted Ake out as well, but if his price holds out i can wait for next game week

Selling Kane. Had enough.. will buy him when in form again. Question is- for who?

Firmino, Morata, Gabriel Jesus, .. or Laca? I expect a revamped Arsenal after the break.

From a fixtures perspective, Gabriel looks good. Then Firmino/Morata close together, with Laca as a punt.

    Falling stars

Obviously everyone is rushing to the risers right now, but feels like there are maybe a few who have lost / losing value who could prove good value in the future or help make up for 0.1m losses. I've avoided the really obvious ones like kane etc but a few of my thoughts. Interested in who else others think and why?

Knockaert / Ritchie - 5.9m mids, arguably the main men fpl wise for Brighton and Newcastle, both looked sharp at the weekend and unlucky not to get more points, if either teams settle in premier league a bit more

Holgate/Martina - 4.4m rwb (both for rotation if necessary even) for a strong everton defence once fixtures turn gw6

Wimmer looking like he goes to stoke so would imagine he'd start for 4.4m

    Trippier provided aurier doesn't sign

Still think Rodriguez will be decent value for 5.9m, just don't expect the world

And even though it's been disastrous so far, I can still see kola making a success of it, since yesterday's starters didn't exactly do themselves any favours - especially if the ox left, he seems made for an alonso role where the clean sheets are seen as a bonus (which arsenal will get as bad as it looks now)...

I think there will be at least one point of the season where Walcott brakes into the Arsenal team and provides decent value.

I think Lindeoff too once the champions league starts and Jones gets injured.

Sane is one key city forward getting injured away from being the best city option.

Started well on 66k overall rank so don't want to pull trigger on WC. Few fires to put out though:

    DDG
    Davies Bertrand Stephens Hegazi
    Salah Pogba Carroll
    Kane Lukaku Jesus

    Elliot JWP RLC Mariappa

    1 ft

    A) Thinking JWP needs to go. Either to Atsu or Can (who has impressed me attacking wise this season for pool)

    B) But with VVD and Hoedt coming back for Sot I can't see Stephens starting anymore, so would the sideways transfer to Cedric make more sense. I can then just bench JWP and play Carrol home to Newcastle.

        Problems in your WC
        1) Sanchez : Future Unresolved
        2) No Lukaku
        3) Abraham: rotation risk with Llorente

        1. Puyol Pants Up
          • 9 Years
          6 years, 8 months ago

The future unresolved is kinda silly considering by the time next GW starts it will be after the transfer window so if he does move I can just change him. Lukaku has been meh in the last couple of weeks and I think Stoke will hold him out next GW. Abraham I agree, but he has scored and is getting chances and does have decent fixtures.

Already used my FT, also I think Stephens might lose his spot. Mooy playing too deep and Ritchie has been meh as well, I'm not sure though.

Its your call, but I wouldn't WC with that team.
You have defenders who'll come of the bench if Stephens doesn't start. Richie looked promising this week.
Take a -4 or even -8 if required

The only logical reason for wildcarding is for team value. The actual team you've put forward is just sideways, containing people who've had a good week, plus Sanchez.

Best Danilo replacement - as i don't believe he will start next week with Walker and Mendy both available.
Up to 7m (Alonso is 7.1 - what a jerk)

Mendy looked like a beast and is nailed on. Consider him.

Is Ake going down in price? If so, is it worth getting rid for a -4 hit?

    Anybody on a WC?

Had a couple of horrible weeks - wondering if the WC would help

Possibly Wcing, not sure yet. I posted above

Yeh, activated last night. I've already taken hits and there were 5 players in urgent need of shifting, so I felt the WC was justified.

2 FTs, but a few players which may have to go
    A) Kane
    B) Gabbi
    C)RLC
    D) Stephens

    Who to sell, and why?

      B and D

Stephens no longer nailed and better options than Gabi at that price

Thought there would be a fire sale of Kane... But it seems people are preferring to keep?

Is it right in saying if i wildcard in the 2nd international break, i may not be able to afford the same players as they would have all risen?

Price rises very slow this season. And you can get the one's rising heavily with your free transfers anyway.

But you'll have found one or two reliable enablers to fund the players you really want. I would wait.

    Who to play?

    A) Willian (Leicester), I hear he is unlikely to start.
    B) J Rod (Bha), wba are not going to be prolific away from home this year
