Scout Notes – Lingard Rise Continues

Jesse Lingard maintained his rich vein of form as a strong Manchester United labour to a 2-0 victory over Derby, while Liverpool’s win over Everton is clouded in controversy.

Both Jose Mourinho and his Liverpool counterpart Jurgen Klopp fielded close to first-choice teams last night, suggesting the duo see the FA Cup as their best hope of silverware this season.

The United boss made five changes to the side that beat Everton on New Year’s Day, resting key defender Phil Jones and handing Henrikh Mkhitaryan a start in place of Nemanja Matic against Championship form team Derby County.

The Armenian was part of a star-studded midfield that, perhaps surprisingly, also included Paul Pogba and the in-form Jesse Lingard, who has scored four goals across the last five Gameweeks.

His excellent recent showings have seen him soar to the top of Gameweek 23’s transfers-in table, with more than 210,000 managers buying Lingard ahead of a visit from struggling Stoke City two Mondays from now. A further price rise to 6.3 prior to the Potters meeting appears imminent.

The 14.0%-owned midfielder responded with yet another goal, firing home from an assist by substitute Romelu Lukaku with just six minutes of the tie remaining.

The Belgian striker, back in action a week after being stretchered off with a head injury, then sealed the deal on 90 minutes when another sub, Anthony Martial, played him in on the counter-attack.

United had 28 shots against the Rams, ten of which were on target, and Marcus Rashford twice hit the post in a profilgate display.

But the key fact to emerge from the night was just how seriously Mourinho took the tie.

There might have been an element of ego to that – United, after all, were dumped out of the EFL Cup by Bristol City before Christmas – but with the league Man City’s to lose and the Champions League no more than a remote chance of glory, the FA Cup may now be a priority.

Should both United and Liverpool continue to value a good cup run, rotation will be a major factor as things develop, albeit a lot further down the line.

The fourth and fifth rounds – in late January and mid-February – dovetail with the Premier League schedule.

The competition reaches the quarter and semi-final stages during Gameweeks 31 (mid-March) and 35 (late April) respectively, and those ties will cause postponements and possible double Gameweeks.

By then, of course, both sides might have gone a lot deeper in the Champions League as well.

These considerations are not a concern just yet, but it might be worth filing away the impact the FA Cup could still have on our squads as things develop later in the season.

Firmino incident clouds Liverpool win

Virgil Van Dijk capped his Liverpool debut with the winning goal in the Merseyside derby, but his moment of glory was overshadowed by a potential FA investigation involving team-mate Firmino.

Liverpool’s record signing headed home a late corner to seal the Reds’ 2-1 FA Cup third round win over Everton.

It was a dramatic end to a match that, for a local derby, was a relatively tepid affair until Mason Holgate pushed Firmino into the Anfield crowd, sparking a heated exchange between the pair.

Post-match, there were reports that the FA will investigate what was said, with the press stating that there have been allegations that Firmino racially abused the Everton defender during their exchange.

The matter is, obviously, in its infancy and could boil down to little more than a misunderstood comment in a string of Portuguese expletives.

But should any charge be made, the Liverpool striker could be looking at a significant suspension – Newcastle’s Jonjo Shelvey missed five matches for racially abusing a Wolves player in December 2016, for instance.

Owned by 37.2% of FPL managers, Firmino’s stock in FPL is currently simmering. While he has suffered 72,000+ sales ahead of the Gameweek 23 clash with Manchester City, some 86,000 acquisitions have made him the current top target in Jurgen Klopp’s squad.

In contrast, team-mates Mohamed Salah and Philippe Coutinho are suffering heavy losses. The pair are the two most sold assets ahead of the City clash with 189,000+ and 102,000+ sales respectively.

Salah was at Anfield to watch last night’s cup tie, whereas Coutinho, long linked with a move to Barcelona, was conspicuous by his absence.

On the pitch, matters were rather clearer.

Both managers fielded strong sides, with Klopp pairing up Van Dijk and Joel Matip in what most agree is likely to be his first choice centre-back partnership.

Fit-again Adam Lallana was given another start, playing 70 minutes and earning the penalty from which James Milner opened the scoring.

Gylfi Sigurdsson then equalised from a fast Everton break which involved the key pass delivered by, of all people, veteran centre-half Phil Jagielka.

The Toffees’ new striker, Cenk Tosun, was signed too late to be eligible for the tie, meaning Dominic Calvert-Lewin again led the line.

But the 12.4%-owned forward looks likely to be given only limited pitch-time from now on, with more than 700,000 FPL managers set to begin a search for an alternative third striker.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    Your fantasy second wildcard

I’ve seen a few wildcards being used this week after a bruising Christmas for some. While most here are likely to preserve this vital chip for forthcoming double Gameweek planning I thought it might be good to ask if you were wildcarding now, what would your new team look like?

This will help those already wildcarding but may also help sort out some other key issues you are facing, which may be solved with just a hit or two.

    In goal

Has the one good goalkeeper (De Gea) option now trumped the cheap rotation strategy? Or is there still value from save points and bonus in the likes of Fabianski, Adrian and Elliot.

    In defence

Is Alonso now essential and the first name in a back five? If so how many cheap defenders is best? What of Otamendi? Or Stones? And is Virgil van Dijk now a player we should be considering, since his move to Liverpool?

    In midfield

So much choice once again this season, which could indicate a five-man midfield is still the best option. Do you agree?

Which players are a must in your Fantasy wildcarded midfield? This will be of particular interest to those who have loaded up on Spurs assets and are now looking elsewhere.

    Up top

Kane is a must. Or is he? Spurs have an awful run of games on the horizon. Dare we consider Kanexit again?

Is Aguero essential, now Jesus is out for a number of weeks? Unlike Kane he has great fixtures. But will Pep rest him in some league games when Champions League comes around. He has already indicated that attacking midfielders can play there.

    https://www.theguardian.com/football/2018/jan/05/pep-guardiola-sergio-aguero-manchester-city

What of the third striker spot? Or is a 4-5-1 formation with just Kane still looking productive?

If I was WC now, it would look something like this

      Adrian, Fab
      Jones, Christensen, Stones, Mustafi, Lascelles
      Salah, Sterling, Arnautovic, Lingard, Townsend
      Aguero, Kane, Ayew

Ayew is interesting as a third striker.

Another to consider is Crouch (don't laugh). Awful team, but good fixtures and gets the occassional returns - which is all you can wish for when playing a five man midfield.

I mean yes but it is possible with changing few picks.

            - Ayew to Quaner would leave like 0.5, I don't think you will play any of them at all anyway so it doesn't matter.
            - Ryan & Adrian: I guess the rotation thingy can be cheap as well, would save another 0.4(?)

If there is money ITB I guess that's enough for Schindler to Stones. It's your choice tho.

Building team around DDG, Alonso, Kane and Aguero which means some cheaper mids:

      DDG
      Alonso, Otamendi, Jones
      Salah, Sterling, Arnie, Lingard, Albrighton
      Kane, Aguero

      (Elliot, Mee, Quaner, Mariappa)

I think it's a strange time for WCing. A lot would depend on who you see as the most effective attackers. Normally the first two or even 3 names on the sheet are forwards. But other than a patchy Kane, who else can we rely on?

Lukaku isn't performing how we had hoped, the Arsenal game will have done a lot of damage to confidence in Morata. Firmino is his usual streaky self but now with the spectre of suspension hanging over we him. Aguero is now guaranteed starts but even he hasn't been his usual destructive self. That's before you even begin to consider all the 5-7 mil forwards that rotate in and out each week.

I think I lot of people will be hoping that Tosan is the answer, right now I'm not sure I could pick 3 forwards that I'm happy with.

It’s not bad. You might still need to have a free hit to cover GW28, though. You’re likely left with Salah, Arnie and 6 x Cheap for that week.

Free hit in GW28 for sure. I personally am not WC. My team is similar to the one I posted already. I just need to change Kane to Aguero in GW24. I may WC in GW28 and then free hit in the big DGW.

Have taken a -8 so far and still undecided about pulling the trigger. Kanexit has already happened, regret not going with my gut and leaving him out for the DGW.

My team didn't have enough differentials in to climb the ranks which was the main driver for change. Currently on

      Salah Sterling Mahrez Arnie Richarlison
      Aguero Firmino (Quanar)

There's still not enough activity among the forwards for me so I'd stick with power five in midfield (albeit weighted back towards City from Liverpool), hoover up BBPS in defence (Kos/Azpi) plus OOP threat (Alo) and get some saves from GKs (poss DdG and Fab). Aguero would be sole premium forward alongside Carroll and Crouch/DCL.

I have wild carded now to improve in all the areas I'd planned on over the coming weeks as I doubt my team will ever need any extreme changes from this point on. If need I will just take some hits to fit in extra DGW players and play my free hit on the BGW to make sure all my players are playing.

      This my wildcard team currently:

      Pope, Adrian
      Alonso, Otamendi, Jones, Robertson, Bardsley
      Salah, Coutinho, Sterling, Lingard, Carroll
      Kane, Aguero, Quaner

I already had 7 of these players before (Pope, Adrian, Otamendi, Salah, Coutinho, Lingard, Kane) and then had Klavan and Azpi who I've upgraded to Alonso and Robertson, the rest I've just brought as either good differentials or cheap players who play. Need to catch up on my cash mini league leader by 120 (he's 1.5k currently I'm 3rd at 190k) so had to take some risks and other than Sterling, Otamendi and Kane I have a completely different squad to him. Going to keep an eye on the Coutinho situation but I really do not think Liverpool will be stupid enough to sell Coutinho at this stage of the season and he's an excellent player to have.

What do you think Jonty? Thanks!

I've activated my wildcard for a few reasons:

      1. Dead end players in my team - because of their awkward value (my poor planning) they required more transfers to fix
      2. A poor season needing action sooner rather than later, and I can use planning/wholesale hits to back this up in DGW
      3. Rebuilding to a formation with 1 up front. I think the value in defence/midfield is so good that it pays to bench strikers

      my team is now:

      DDGea (cheap second option)
      Alonso, Azpilicueta, Otamendi, Jones, Stones
      Salah, Sterling, Lingard, Mahrez (Doucoure)
      Kane (Ayew, Quaner)

      .1 ITB

        4. I wanted some bench players better than 'fodder' as I think with city running away with the league rotation will be key

This would have cost me 28 plus 1FT in hits

      Probably something like this:
      Ddg Adrian
      Alonso Otamendi Jones Mee Dunk
      Kdb Salah Sterling Arnautovic Lingard
      Kane Ayew Quaner
      Could have Mahrez over Kdb.

      - Agüero
      - Kane
      - Salah
      - Sterling
      - Lingard
      - Alonso
      - Otamendi or Stones
      - de Gea or Jones

Then just fill the remaining spots with cheap differentials, depending on budget and formation.

ok ive just WC'd , what do you guys think?

      Adrian (good fixtures) - (Speroni)
Alonso - Stones - Davies (rose inj) - Jones - (Long (ward inj))
      Salah - Sterling - Arnie(fxt's) - Lingard - (Carroll)
      Kun - Kane - (Ayew)

this is a mix of short term and long term, was considering Robertson, Sane/Silva, Mahrez, but because of next GW fixtures i think this is best can come up with at the mo, even Hazard wont have it easy against Leicester.

am i missing anyone , thoughts??

        Wildcarded last week.

Whether to wildcard or not always depends on your individual circumstances. These comments of "too early" etc are always a bit blowhardy.

How do people tend to play when their attackers face their defenders? Both of which will be holding transfer value and you dont want to sell at the minute.

Bench the least likely to score points or play both in case your instincts are shown wrong? Or choose which will prevail and play your subs in place of the weaker option?

      Eg.
      Salah v City asset
      Sterling v Liverpool asset
      Vardy v Chelsea asset

This is one of the hardest part of the game for me.

If on WC you have got to consider a 442 or 451. Incredible options and value in both midfield and defence.

      Pickford
      Alonso Ota/Stones Christ Jones
      Salah Sterling Arnie/Pogba Lingard
      Kane Aguero/Firmino

Good questions, Jonty. I'm sitting on a -8 after deciding to finally drop Kane. I felt I needed the flexibility to catch up in my ML. Currently my team is:

      DDG Adrian
      Christensen Otamendi Jones Ogbonna Dunk
      Salah Sterling Lanzini Doucoure Choupo-Moting
      Aguero Morata Ayew (0.9 ITB)

90% of my ML currently has Kane, so I'm taking a bit of a risk, but I hadn't been captaining him recently, and I figure I can get back via Aguero if need be.

Do folks think I should hit the WC and do additional work, or stick with my -8 and let it ride?

This would be the team if I were to wildcard:

      Pickford (Adrian)
      Alonso Stones Jones (Duffy, Hegazi)
      Salah Sterling D.Silva Richarlison Lingard
      Kane Vardy (Quaner)

But not sure on it so therefore I won't pull the trigger

      Think I would go;

      Alonso, Stones, Jones
      Salah, KDB, Sterling, Mahrez, Lingard
      Kane

Elliot, Moreno, A Carroll, Ayew, Mariappa

Aguero could give up minutes to Sterling like he did in FA Cup as Sterling moved to centre forward. Food for thought.

Kane far from essential, even with his two hattricks I never lost too much ground not owning him and any week he blanks or scores lowly I found my team was likely to be climbing due to having extra big hitters to score well.

My midfielders are: Hazard, Salah, Sterling, Arnautovic, Lingard.

Toying with some transfers for GW24. Which one is the best?

    a) DCL > Firmino [FOR FREE]
    b) Christensen, Arnautovic/Lingard, DCL > Alonso, 5.2/4.5, Firmino
    c) Christensen, Hazard, DCL > Alonso, 6.4, Aguero

Obviously a while to go. But I like Long upgrade to Alonso and in GW24 - Kane to Aguero. But Kane to Aguero is divisive. I think Kane's fixtures are crap from GW24-27 whereas Aguero couldn't have better fixtures.

I was same, doing well first half so held held held on WC1. Played it at last possible minute to set up the double game week then realised to my horror I'd done it four hours too late and had actually blown WC2 instead....

Fortunately. My team did ok and I still have all other chips but I'm going to have to play my way in with a LOT of thought.

Certainly won't do it again..been playing ten years as well. Doh!

Would you rather lose alli or son? Got triple spurs attack and thinking one makes way for lingard. Alli looked like he could've got about 40pts in that dgw, but son is quite explosive and a nice differential. Plus cheaper! Other will probably be sold for mahrez in 2 weeks if he stays.

Someone wanted Lingard hot topic. Here it is

9 weeks since regular minutes tied for midfielders for 1st with Salah shots on target(13) and goals(7). Ahead of Sterling, Mahrez, and Arnie with similar but slightly less in each category. 2nd for all players behind Salah for xG. Outscored KDB and Kane. 4pts less than Hazard and Richarlison combined scores.

That's exactly what it reminds me of and said the other day but Ramsey was double pivot and Lingard CAM but both had knack of arriving in right place at right time. I think Ramsey's goals were mostly PB but Lingard is having a crack from distance and they seem to be going in

Would like to get Lingard in GW23 and do Kane > Aguero in GW24. Who should I lose for Lingard? BFS will surely have Everton park the bus at Wembley while Ric has a nice home game against Saints.

              A - Ric
              B - Son

              DDG
              Jones - Ota - Alonso - Og
              Salah - Sterling - Son - Ric - Arnie

I bought Arnie for DGW based on stats as OPP striker. He didn't play. Carroll and Chica are back.

The arent ‘back’. They were always available.

Arnautovic and Antonio just picked up niggles.

Arnie is in form and has dream fixtures. Most will say ditch Ric but Spurs have tough games. BFS will want a reaction after last night.

Alli, DCL & Depo to Gross, Firminho & quaner over the next gw or 2 will give me

              DDG (elliot)
              Ota Alonso Jones (Duffy, Ogbonna)
              Salah Sterling Eriksen Richarlison Gross
              Kane Firminho (quaner)

Bench too light? If Mharez stays there's another move from Eriksen if needed

              Gw24 -8
              Otamendi - Stones
              Christensen - Alonso
              DCL - Quaner
              Janmaat - Masuaku

              Fabianski
              Alonso Stones Masuaku
              Salah Sterling Hazard Lindgard Richarlison

                Don't sell Ota.
Chris to Alonso is sideways unless you think he's going to go on a goal scoring spree. Less likely for baps on plain CS.
Quaner is a short price transfer trap
Wham defenders not as attractive after DGW. Reasonable fixtures but don't think they're that solid
