A double Dutch weekend, rescued for some by the elegant brilliance of the Arsenal skipper, after Alex Ferguson had conspired to baffle us by attacking Liverpool with a blunt instrument. With such unpredictable madness afoot, even the brawn and bluster on sale in the Potteries is beginning to appeal…

The Player

The build-up to the weekend was dominated by talk of Robin Van Persie and merits of trading from Wayne Rooney to the Arsenal skipper. On Sunday, Van Persie’s performance compounded the misery of those who held firm on Rooney, only to see their man twiddling his medically enhanced fringe on the bench at Anfield.

The Dutchman’s one-man show in Arsenal’s stuttering 2-1 victory over Sunderland underlined his potential to rival Rooney and City’s Sergio Aguero for the Golden Boot, cementing a place in our Fantasy forward lines. The opening goal after less than 30 seconds hinted at an avalanche that never quite arrived; nevertheless Van Persie was unfortunate not to add to his tally with a turn and chip of Bergkamp-like brilliance – the Emirates woodwork denying him a coup de grâce. Van Persie had his match-defining moment, however, his beautifully flighted deadball effort instantly dismissed Seb Larsson’s own quality free-kick as inconsequential – Arsenal had their three points and Van Persie had delivered on his promise.

Having promoted him to the top of Watchlist last week, we were quick to push him above the Manchester duo for the next few gameweeks. Both Rooney and Aguero square up this weekend, whilst Van Persie has another Emirates encounter to size up. Stoke will likely provide a significant obstacle, but, on Sunday’s evidence, those who choose to ignore the Dutchman again will go into gameweek nine feeling ill at ease at the prospect of another rich return for the Arsenal maestro.

The Team

While City powered their way to the pinnacle and Newcastle defended their unbeaten record like their Geordie brethren protecting a pint, our vote goes to a team gradually emerging as a Fantasy force. Stoke’s 2-0 win over Fulham at the Britannia was never in doubt – they simply swamped their opponents with a relentless and powerful showing. Fulham we’re bullied; given no time to settle and produce the kind of cultured flourishes that had Neil Warnock spitting out excuses following his side’s 6-0 slaying at the Cottage.

Stoke were a monster. Tony Pulis’ rigidly regimented unit have now conceded just a single goal in four home matches, emphasising the value of their defensive assets. The flipside of this is that, in attacking terms, they continue to struggle with just 4 goals scored at the Britannia although, with Matt Etherington demonstrating intent with two assists and Jermaine Pennant remaining fit (for now) on the opposite flank, prospects may improve.

A trip to the Emirates next weekend will be a test of Stoke’s progress and Arsenal’s ability to play through the most muscular and stubborn of opponents. Following that however, Stoke have three home matches in four which promise to cement a placing in the top reaches of the table. Newcastle, QPR and Blackburn all visit the Britannia before the end of November and, with a trip to Bolton amongst that group, Pulis will have his sights set on four positive results to take them into December and the Christmas programme. Fantasy managers will surely be taking note and preparing for an acquisition.

The Talking Point

Alex Ferguson appears to be playing some kind of rotation roulette with Roberto Mancini. It’s as if they’re competing to see who can put together the most expensive bench lineup and still fetch the three points. While Sir Alex saw fit to omit Rooney, Nani and Anderson from his teamsheet for the clash with arch-rivals Liverpool, Mancini looked to better him by preserving the talents of David Silva, Samir Nasri and Edin Dzeko with Villa in town.

For Fantasy managers, this recent trend creates a nightmarish scenario. Clearly, around Champions League fixtures, we have to ready ourselves for this rest and rotation to continue, for millions of our Fantasy talent to go to waste or be limited to a 20-minute cameo.

Suddenly a decent bench who can actually contribute some points to our gameweek effort might be the way to go. It’s surely foolhardy to risk going into a gameweek without the likes of Silva and Nani and yet, if Ferguson and Mancini persist with their policy around crucial European fixtures, we have to presume that this weekend’s disappointment will kick us in the Balotellis again. We need to be ready for next time; time to shift Shane Ferguson perhaps? I know this bloke down at Wigan who’s good for a couple of points every week.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Don't use it if you're happy with your team. There are 30 weeks to go. Use it to benefit from a DGW or when your team is in a mess (injuries, suspensions, players out of form).

I'm tempted to take Suarez and SWP out for Sturridge and VDV tonight for a 4 point hit. I can afford to wait and miss the price rises but am reluctant to. Sturridge has fixtures almost as good as Suarez short term and better medium term. SWP needs to go. Thoughts?

I know it looks great on paper but how did MU fare against Norwich at home? Chelsea's home game against Norwich wasn't great either. Sturridge has QPR, who conceded 4 to Bolton and 6 to Fulham.

Been lurking a long time but first time posting. The advice is generally on point so here goes.

My team as is, and line up for gw 9:

    Given (Worm)
    Ward, Simpson, Bosingwa, Boyata (Richards)
    Sinclair, VDV, Silva, Young (Dyer)
    Hernandez, Sturridge, (Dzeko)

I have 1 free tfer and 1m in the bank.

    Options are
    1) Do nothing and play as is
    2) Dzeko ---> Adebayor (2 spurs coverage against Bla and play 3-4-3, dropping boyata), VDV to gerrard would be next move
    3) Dzeko ---> Suarez
    4) keep Dzeko and upgrade Dyer to Ben Arfa/Petrov/Moses/Pilkington?
    5) Upgrade def. Proly Ward or Boyata to Enrique/Shawx

Currently leading all my mini leagues (caught the rooney train early). Just loking for some of your thoughts and my team if possible.

Bosingwa, Richards and rotating the other 3 is fine imo. Just bench Dyer every week til you get a chance to change him, but there's no-one decent for his price - you have to bench one of your front 8 every week, might as well be Dyer.

I totally agree that he isn't clinical. He needs 3 or 4 chances to score. He often seems to either rush the shot or dwell on it a little too long. The thing is he's so creative, he tends to be able to create 2 or 3 chances for himself, so he'll eventually get the goal. I'm a Liverpool fan and he's a superb player but he's nowhere near as good a finisher as RVP, Aguero, Hernandez etc. I feel there's a hat-trick soon enough though when he's got his shooting boots on.

Looking for the ways to offload Drogba and Moses.. Any comment on these options please.

A: Sturridge + 8.6m MF …. not so much choice for MF, probably Dempsey.

B: Suarez + M.Petrov …. waiting until FA announce investigation result.

C: 5.6m FW + VDV .... FW could be A.Johnson or Best. A strong MF, but feel unbalanced of fund.

    Adebayor – Drogba – RVP

B looks the better play short term, longer term you may want to get on Sturridge. Just cause you have $$$ to spend doen't mean you have to use it - Walters (6mil) looks a decent prospect over next few months given stokes nice fixtures

That is what made me feel uneasy to jump on B. I think Sturridge is better in mid/long term and I would have to pay at least 0.2m more to get him after this week.. Anyway, B isn't too short-term. Suarez and Petrov have a good run of fixtures over the next few weeks too.

If only Suarez found guilty, whic I hope not, it's hard to decide.

    Given/Ruddy
    Enrique/Jones/Bosingwa/Simpson/DeLaet
    Silva/Nani/Arteta/Dyer/Moses
    RVP/Ade/Dzeko.

I have 2 free transfer and .5 in the bank.. these are my thoughts, please let me know what you guys think:

    1) Dzeko/DeLaet to Sturidge/Kompany Followed by Arteta to ?? the next week (this would make for a tough choice on who to bench this week).

    2) Dzeko/Arteta to Suarez/5.7 mid (or less, depending on price changes then the following GW swap De Laet for Kompany

    3) Dzeko/Arteta to Suarez/8.2 mid then the follow week swap De Laet for another bench D.

I really want Suarez for the next few, but the Sturidge option seems the most logical for my teams overall health, am I wrong?

Bringing Kompany in (even after he rises .1) is a good move next week. Not this week with MANU away.

I'd go Sturridge cause it will enable you more funds to a thin midfield (arteta out asap) which like mine last weekend was affected by rotation. (nb. I had 4 mids contribute 1 point each this past GW)

Yeah, but even bringing Kompany in this week to avoid the rise I could bench him, as the transfer is free and Arteta, although needs to be swapped, can easily play this next GW.

Good points on Sturridge, long term he is probably the better value, I just think that Suarez is due some big hauls in the near future! Ah well, long-term strength is better I guess, that way I can keep my wild card for big double GWs.

Option 4. Dzeko/Arteta to Suarez & Ramsey, then the following week De Laet to Shawcross, it's a winner. You keep your Arsenal coverage, get in Suarez with great run of fixtures, and also addquality defender with great fixtures

I like it, but don't forget I have RVP for Arsenal cover and my main goal is try and get 3 bench players vs my current 4. Shawcross fills that void when his fixtures allow, so I guess it works if Stoke rotate well enough with Newcastle... and Wigan for moses (if hecomes good before I drop him 😉

I'm guessing there may be a few people in my position: I transferred Aguero out and brought RVP in, which is all good, first decent captain choice of the year, BUT... what do I do now? Hang onto RVP for Arsenal's good fixtures, or bring Aguero back in GW10? With United's good fixtures coming up there's not really any question of dumping Rooney, and all three won't fit without messing the rest of the team up.... could be a season-defining decision!

I'm in the same boat mate....but I agree I think it's one or the other...seriously considering filling my midfield with a lot of Norwich/Swansea players to have all three up front... 🙂 Personally speaking though? Aguero. I'm picking him up, no matter how RVP is playing. I've followed the lad through his years in La Liga, he's a powerhouse. Hopefully one of them will get injured beforehand to make this decision a little easier.. 😉 (Jk, all the best to the two)

So tempting...but Silva is a season keeper (bar any injury). Definitely not worth taking him out for RVP. Come on brotha, it's ARSENAL haha 😉

You're like a FF siren, tempting me onto the rocks there... tempting, but it would have to be a pretty serious downgrade- to someone around 6m. Last week aside, Silva has been super consistent.

Plus if Sturridge keeps on anything like his consistency at his price, he's a season-keeper too.

Leaning towards Rooney and Aguero at the moment, Aguero is a terrifying player not to have, could explode any time, anywhere.

Hopefully you will be OK this week Reds. I think you have five of your front six at some risk of rotation,I would therefore downgrade the one of your choice GW10 (so you have two free) and upgrade your non-playing bench warmers. Tough decision I know, but bite the bullet.

    Need some advice...

Did my free transfer already left 0.2m in the bank. This is my team for week 9:

    Vorm
    Warnock, Enrique, Kompany
    Mata, Petrov, Ramsey, Silva
    RVP (C), Aadebayor, Agbonlahor

Not really sure about placing Dempsey on the bench so I'm having a slight problem choosing my midfield....

    - Mata @way QPR (locked in)

    3 of:

    - Dempsey @home EVE
    - Ramsey @home STO
    - Petrov @home SUN
    - Silva @way MUN

I had to reinforce my defense and was sure I wanted Warnock for the next 3 games. I check price changes @ fiso.co.uk but sometimes when a defender scores a goal and his next fixtures are good people go cazy... I missed some price changes in the past so I played it safe this time. I hope none of my mid or fwd players get injured mid week...... Dempsey is desperate to play and score so I think I'll be ok.....

I would put Dempsey as first sub, he's been playing crap anyway and get rid next week so you have an easier bench choice in future and can upgrade Gabby when his fixtures get Naff after the next international break.

Yes, Dempsey is out next week for Watson to take advantage of Stokes next 3/4 run of good games. I see 3 problems with this move: 1. I already have Shawcross and not sure about having 2 Stoke players 2. Stoke have problems scoring goals 3. Stokes European nights. My alternative is Sinclair for one week and then.....his next few weeks are so so.... What do you think?

That will leave a lot of cash to upgrade Agbonlahor in the near future....like to see someone look at my team and think what I am thinking!!!! Helps a lot and reinforces my decision making! Thanks.

I'm also keeping my eye on Mata, for now he is ok but for that price he needs to produce more points. I have him cause no one else does and could be a game breaker like Van Persie was this week. His replacements would be Nani or VDV....

Premier League teams with midweek fixtures this week:

    Man C
    Man U
    Liverpool (Just a friendly though)
    Chelsea
    Arsenal

    Spurs

I'd say that making early transfers is a massive risk, so I'm waiting until Friday.

Massively surprised by Huth who can't get a regular start. Seem to be a lot of players this year underperforming. I put it down mainly to the huge responsibility and weight of their inflated prices on FPL.

Eugtan - it really depends on your fwd line thinking. Right now, form and fixtures dictate that RVP and Rooney have to be seriously considered.

If you, like me, want those two 12 mill big hitters, then Sturridge becomes a necessity. If Sturridge looks like a regular starter, then he becomes a necessity anyway in a free scoring CHS attack.

Keep hold of Mata - great things are around the corner 😉

Have Chelsea ever started game with the three of .. Sturridge - Torres - Mata .. upfront in league yet ?

Torres replaced Mata in Sunderland match and Sturridge subbed off early. They effectively didn't play together.

It looks good against Leverkusen. 2 assists from Torres, 1 goal from Mata, and many shots by Sturridge.

And.. Yeah!! I agree that all 3 started in Man Utd match almost clear all concern.. 😀
Mata might be flourish, but I'm now wondering if Sturridge will be as effective as now with Torres in the team. 😕

Last year, I'd have said "yes" to VDV. This year there is an element of uncertainty surrounding him: apart from being a hamstring waiting to happen, HK has been playing him in different positions and there seems to be a threat of rotation too.

As I said above, I'd rather have Mata, imo. 😕

Not really into Adam...or H2H for that matter. However, I believe you should put the best team possible regardless of who your opponent has. The right players will get you over the line. Mata and Sturridge would be my picks from CHS.

I played it in week 6 😉 :)...and boy did it work out well 🙂 431k in three weeks is a pretty decent gain.

Looks like the right decision now as I had a truly awful midpark. Caught a lot of the price rises too.

I've set myself a goal of reaching the top 1k within 8 gameweeks of playing the wildcard 😕

That's a tough goal!! I'd almost say it's impossible. Saying that, you've set yourself high standards after last year, so who knows!!

Was planning on using mine after GW11 but I'm fairly happy with my squad so tempted to hang on for a while longer. Annoying missing out on all the price rises, but reckon it could be the better move....whatcha reckon?

It's a tough goal but I achieved something similar last year. Got a lot of catching up to do hence the justification of the w/c.

I think your team is fine for now. Play your w/c when the Utd fixtures change for the better.

Top 1,000 Eh? That's some target Jafalad. Top 10K for Christmas would be acceptable for me. As long as I'm top by Easter. 😉

    a) Dunne -> Enrique
    b) Save the transfer
    c) Something else

    Given
    Bosingwa, Dunne, Simpson
    Nani, Silva, Sinclair, Ramsey
    RVP, Suarez, Adebayor

    Bank 0.1m
    Free transfers 1

      b. I'd be tempted to have two frees and make a double switch depending on the fixtures.

Forgot to put my subs out there:

        Ruddy, Woodgate, Brown, Moses

Yeah I'm tempted to do b) and get Aguero in next week

I would keep Dunne for his easier three ahead, save the transfer and see what next week brings Jinswick. Team looks fine.

Depending on price changes over the next week or so, for GW10 I could potentially do Sturridge+Mata-> Aguero and Anderson, giving me a front 8 of:

    Rooney-RVP-Aguero
    Silva-Anderson-Larsson-Cabaye-Dyer

    Is that mental?

My plan initially was to keep Sturridge and possibly transfer Mata to Nani and RVP to Aguero. Which is more balanced, but having the Three Muskateers upfront looks damn tasty.

      Yes IMO.
Considering Sturridge is performing better than all of those mid priced midfielders..
Sturridge and Mata is better than Aguero and Ando.

You're not wrong, Jack. I'm just trying to avoid having to make the inevitable choice between Van Persie and Aguero....

True that..but I think Sturridge at 6.5 (or whenever you bought him) and Adebayor at 8.5 represent brilliant value and recently have been performing better than/equal to those that are 3-4 (in Sturridge's case 5-6) more expensive.

Yeah, value-wise it's a no-brainer really. With the goal-centric bonus system too you need consistent goal-scorers... which are generally easier to find up front than in midfield. So if you can pick up a striker in a top 4 team for that sort of money and spend the savings on a big-hitter in midfielder then you're laughing.

I think I'll stick with my original plan...

Rooney, Sturridge, RVP/Aguero up top, Silva and Mata/Nani in midfield.

You are coming round to my way of thinking there, Jonny 😉 Load up front for the big spondolees 😛

You not thought of my front 3: RVP/Rooney/Sturridge?

However, that midpark of yours makes me feel uneasy. The other concern is the threat of rotation with these teams playing in Europe.

Yeah, it's basically RVP vs Aguero in my mind.

I guess the difference between us is that your defence bothers me, my midfield bothers you.

At the moment my front 8 is Rooney, RVP, Sturridge, Silva, Mata, Larsson, Cabaye, Dyer.

I think Larsson is going to prove a solid mid-price pick: Sunderland haven't even played that well so far and he's been picking up the points. Quality player. Cabaye will go eventually- I'd like Drenthe to start picking up some starts and I'll bring him in around GW12... with Kompany and Bosingwa conceding late goals holding the backline for me, I'm pretty happy with it!

          Cheap defence v cheap Midfield?

Well mids traditionally score more than defs and the defs are bottom of the queue for the baps, so for me it's a no brainer.

Larsson doesn't quite do enough for me ff-wise.

I don't think we'll ever agree on this one...

The way I see it though, with cheap midfielders you're always more happy to play them, regardless of the opponent... for example, I was happy to play Larsson against Arsenal because he's got a quality free kick on him and Arsenal are crap at set pieces. But if I'd had Brown, I wouldn't have wanted to have to play him at the weekend.

I guess it boils down to 2 cheap defs v 3 budget mids. 😕

Anderson or Ramsey from GW11 up until the next wild card? Both have awesome fixtures and similar price.

Ramsey is probably more nailed on and playing further forward, but has Man City away in that run and Arsenal are still crap.

Anderson playing in an in form team. On corners. Also, I wouldn't have to drop him for any of those fixtures (but ferguson will probably do that for me).

Ramsey if he's fit all day long, whatever the fixtures over Anderson for me, but that's just a personal choice.

I'm leaning that way too. I've had my eyes on Anderson for my wild card for ages, as i've been planning 3 Man Utd players, and my mail rival (who is 120pts ahead) has Rooney, Nani and Young so don't think I can go for them. I was thinking De Gea, Jones (i think that due to his versatility he's as nailed on as you're going to get), and Anderson. But then I realised that if its a straight choice, Ramsey is probably a better bet than anderson. If I do that, I might get Cleverly as a cheap rotating mid. Thoughts?

      Psychology, Flynny!

You know why Tiger Woods wears red on the last day of a tournament? Pyschology. It lets his opponents know of his presence.

I'm employing the same psycholgy on you lot 😉

Well it frightened me, that sort of Petr Cech goalie look. So strikers inadvertently kick the ball straight at him. You'd think he'd keep more clean sheets if that were the case. 🙂
