QPR continued their summer of squad restructuring earlier this week with the capture of Fabio Da Silva from Man United on a season-long loan deal. Having struggled to nail down a place in Sir Alex Fergusonโ€™s first-team, the 22-year-old has moved to Loftus Road and seems set for a regular role under Mark Hughes in the upcoming campaign:

With Taye Taiwo returning to Milan after completion of his short-term loan deal, thereโ€™s a vacancy at left-back to be filled for the Rโ€™s next term. Hughes has talked up the playerโ€™s adaptability but, depending on the clubโ€™s future dealings before the end of August, it seems more than likely Fabio will become an integral part of the back-four for the 2012/13 campaign, with his new manager revealing:

First and foremost, he’s a good defender. We can give him the games he’s craving at this stage of his career, so it benefits everybody. He’s very versatile – he can play left or right-back and he’s also been utilised in midfield by Sir Alex (Ferguson) in the past, so we know what we’re getting, and that’s a very good player….we believe he has all the attributes to be a success here next season.

The Statistics

Along with his twin brother Rafael, Fabio began his youth career at Fluminese in the 2005-06 campaign. Initially joining the club as a defensive midfielder, he was converted to left-back and was spotted by the Man United scouting system early on in his career at the Brazilian club. After three seasons in the youth set-up, the pair were snapped up by United in February 2007 and moved to Old Trafford the following January without making a single first-team appearance.

Over his four campaigns in the Premier League, itโ€™s fair to say Fabio has failed to make the expected impact. Every season, Ferguson has utilised him more in cup games and Europe, with only 21 of his 53 appearances coming in the league โ€“ Rafael, in comparison, has played 52 times in the top-flight and a total of 90 times. Back in April, the United boss acknowledged the need for Fabio to gain experience elsewhere and heโ€™s been true to his word, turning to his former player Hughes in a bid to boost the playerโ€™s game time.

The Prospects

Judging by Hughesโ€™ comments above, the player hasnโ€™t just moved away from United to end up warming another bench. Clearly, Fabio is under the impression he is set to feature regularly โ€“ this factor was the overwhelming reason both he and Ferguson have agreed to the loan, according to the 22-year-old:

This loan is so important for me in terms of my career. I want to play as many games as possible here. I want to play well and win games as well. Sir Alex Ferguson said that I’d enjoy it here and told me to play as many games as I can. It’s a good move for my career and for my confidence.

Fabio is likely to come in at 4.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and will be classified as a defender, though Hughesโ€™ remarks concerning his versatility are intriguing โ€“ if in the unlikely event that he is fielded further forward, the loanee would certainly rise in our Fantasy thinking as a potential out-of-position prospect.

A look at QPRโ€™s performances since Hughes took over from Neil Warnock highlights the potential of perhaps picking up one of their backline as part of a rotation pairing. The Rโ€™s were unbeaten in their last six at Loftus Road, with their home form paramount to their survival โ€“ with clean sheets in each of the last three games in front of their own fans, Hughesโ€™ approach seemed to pick up as his time at the helm progressed. If Fabioโ€™s foraging runs from deep prove instrumental to QPRโ€™s attacking potential, he could well offer the best route into Hughesโ€™ backline for those willing to take a punt for home games.

Analysing the fixture ticker, Hughesโ€™s side certainly have two strong fixtures in their first three at Loftus Road (SWA, CHE, WHM), affording Fabio the platform to demonstrate his potential early on and perhaps finally stake a case as a bona fide Fantasy asset for the season ahead.

For Christina - I haven’t been in the member area since the season finished. But last season I used it a bit, mainly to look at ICT stats, projections & the very helpful member articles and of course the ticker. My main reason for signing up was to support the site.

I wouldn’t worry about it taking too much of your time, that can happen even without being a member. It is a great extra tool to utilize

£5.5m for a QPR defender is unlikely. He could come in at £4.5m, maybe £5m max, imo.

I know we are typically pessimistic on prices but I cannot see Fabio being higher than 4.5
QPR were poor for clean sheets last year, his goal threat whilst probable is not certain and we don't even 100% know he's nailed on.

World rankings are FIFA's equivalent of the PPI system for bonus points. Can't argue with them as they are statistical models, but don't really reflect reality. The good news for England is this means no big guns in their qualifying groups.

Not really, you can catch up through differentials and DGWs. Last year, at one point the teams were generic because everyone had RVP, Bale, Caulker, Vorm and the gang.. I don't think that 's the case every season..

Nope. You can have a shite start and still have a very good finishing rank.

Warnock is a good manager and I support him, I'm hoping Snodgrass will stay and that we'll land some other good players as well, especially defenders. Paddy Kenny is reported to be just around the corner, and we might even get new owners. PL, we missed you, and I know you've missed us as well!

As I've wild carded after the first few game weeks 2 years in a row, this year I will buy 11 decent player who have good fixtures first up and 4 cheap as possible benchies... then once the bargains surface I'll set my team up accordingly. ๐Ÿ™‚

Manchester United mull New York IPO having ditched plans to float in Singapore last year because of choppy financial markets.

    http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2012/jul/04/manchester-united-fans-concern

Jamie Jackson's piece in the Guardian (linked above) sadly states that MU's operating performance and potential of compete in the transfer market has been shackled by a leveraged balance sheet, yet I see little or no evidence of this. Last summer MU were, net net, one of the biggest spenders in the Prem.

Jackson also seems to assume that Citeh's new found wealth is in some fashion, the norm, which it clearly isn't. You may like or dislike the Glazers, and the family's leveraged buyout of the club was certainly controversial (at least, to those not familiar with financial market takeovers) but I see little long-term damage done thus far to the team's ability to compete.

Give me MU's business model over Citeh's all day long.

Gooner's is pretty similar to MU's in reality, both leveraged (albeit for different reasons), but MU have a much larger marketing and fan base to sell in to. Operational management styles are different, but that's not business model, and some Gooner fans might argue that their club's is 'too' conservative, based on the general perception of success these days, ie winning trophies.

This is mostly true for teams who had a very good first season and then got complacent in their second season. QPR were quite solid at Home towards the end of the season so it's worth a look at.

    Hi Lads,

Two questions that I'm sure the regulars have answered before but you I need help on.

    1) How do the fixture difficulty settings work? In general do people just go with the Scout settings or do individuals tend to alter them?

    2) When is the new season going to open on FPL or has it been announced yet?

Contract ran out and he doesn't want to sign a new one with WIG. He's a good FT for some club, depending on his financial demands, and one of the promoted clubs and/or NOR, SWA should certainly run the rule over signing him.
