Fulham continued to bolster their first-team squad on Thursday with the announcement that Hugo Rodallega will join up at Craven Cottage, subject to the player obtaining a work permit. The Colombian arrives on a Bosman after his contract at Wigan expired and has signed a three-year deal with Martin Jol’s side:

Rodallega’s acquisition helps address the problematic up front area, which has seen Bobby Zamora, Andrew Johnson, Pavel Pogrebnyak and Orlando Sa all depart the London outfit over the last few months and, with Mladen Petric also arriving this summer, is likely to see a brand new front line for Fulham in the upcoming season. Jol, clearly, was more than happy with the transfer:

I am delighted that Hugo has decided to join Fulham. There has been a lot of interest in him from other top flight teams in England and abroad, so to be able to add his quality to our squad is a massive boost this early in our preparations for the new campaign. He is a great addition and I think he will contribute very well to our style and philosophy here.

The Statistics

Rodallega’s professional career begun as an 18-year-old in his native country where, over the course of a couple of seasons with Deportes Quindío and Deportivo Cali, he netted 32 times in 69 league appearances. His performances with the latter earned a move to Mexican outfit Monterrey, who snapped up the Colombian in 2006. The move was far from successful, though; 29 appearances harvested just four goals before Rodallega was sent on loan to Atlas, where he notched five times in 19 games.

Next up was another stint in the Mexican first division with Necaxa, where 25 goals and three assists in 51 matches caught the eye of then-Wigan boss Steve Bruce, who purchased the player in January 2009 for £4.5m. Over the course of his four seasons with the Latics, Rodallega had just one stand-out campaign; in 2009/10, the Colombian excelled as a mid-price Fantasy option with 10 goals, seven assists and 23 bonus points in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, returning a total of 149 points. His overall stats are a little disappointing, though – Rodallega notched 24 times and provided 16 assists in 116 league matches. Having admitted he had no plans to renew his contract this summer, the forward was a peripheral figure under Roberto Martinez last time round – handed a mere 11 starts, he slipped down the pecking order behind Franco Di Santo up front and found the net on just two occasions.

The Prospects

At present, Rodallega looks a strong candidate for a regular role under Jol next season, either partnering Petric in a 4-4-2 or leading the line as a lone frontman, with the latter tucked in behind – as to his initial level of investment, much is likely to depend on Clint Dempsey. The US international comes off the back of an outstanding season and, bearing in mind he was the top scoring midfielder in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, is almost certain to attract major interest from Fantasy managers looking to snap up Fulham’s attacking assets.

Dempsey’s price will also be a key factor as to how we view the likes of Rodallega and Petric; he is now in the top price bracket for midfielders in the Sky Sports game at 8.6 and a jump from his previous FPL valuation of 8.5 could see many seeking alternatives amongst Jol’s squad. A move away from the Cottage for Dempsey, with Liverpool rumoured to be interested, would certainly see us reassess Rodallega’s potential – Fulham were particularly strong at home last term, scoring 36 goals – just three less than Spurs and Arsenal – and proved to be a strong source of attacking points in front of their own fans thanks to Jol’s tactics.

The former Wigan man can be expected to come in around the 6.0 – 6.5 mark in FPL next term, affording us a decent mid-price option as we look to balance the budgets; with the likes of Papiss Cisse and Nikica Jelavic already handed price tags of 9.5 and 8.5 respectively, the need for a cheap third striker looks all the more obvious, with big hitters such as Wayne Rooney, Sergio Aguero and Robin Van Persie all looking likely to be valued around 12.0 or more. Certainly, Rodallega has been looked upon kindly by the Sky Sports game with a price tag of 6.7, compared to Petric at 6.8 and Moussa Dembele’s valuation of 7.7.

Analysing the fixture list, Rodallega is afforded a decent start to the season. While a trip to United and home clash with City hold little appeal over the first six Gameweeks, home clashes with Norwich and West Brom, supplemented by trips to West Ham and former club Wigan, offer a chance to get amongst the points and make an immediate impact in his new surroundings.

What's with the Walcott bandwagon already starting on here? Great player on his day but he is the epitome of inconsistent. I'm generally a big fan of his but for FPL I only dabble when he is on a good run of form/fixtures.

Thought I'd let you all know

I've resigned from my job at the FFS UEFA Council. The loss of France in the FFS Euro's has taken its toll on me & I will be undertaking a series of rehab sessions with Lord Sauron at Mount Doom. I take this chance to thank all the ex-managers for making these enjoyable for the organizers.

I hear the network coverage at Doom isn't quite the best. So, for any FFS UEFA-related questions, feel free to get in touch with any of the other crew members - Pratik/TW/Parm/Udit and the newest addition, JKisthe1. They've got it all set for the coming season - going to be the best yet!

What's the most likely United backline for at least the START of next season. I really cant come up with a sure starter barring Evra. And now the Baines to United rumours are even stronger, making him a doubt too. Vidic just started training fully. Ferdinand/Evans/Jones/Smalling all in line for the CB slot. Rafael/Jones/Smalling at RB again.

      evra vidic evans jones
rafael will start against the lesser teams where no defence is needed
due to the situation in midfield jones might be pushed forward and the RB will be shared between smalling and rafael, again based on opposition

Will SAF pull Vidic right into the thick of things at the start of the season? Surely he will only ease him back in.

I guess we'll never know for sure. At this point if I had to get a defender in from United, I'd go with Evra.

DDG will have just returned from the Olympics as well.

Right back is up in the air but assuming no LB is bought it'll be:

Rafael Rio Vidic Evra until Rio's back goes in which case it'll be:

      Rafael Evans Vidic Evra.

Fergie has loved to rotate the defence but he's also said recently Utd need stability at the back and that he risked the young players too much last season.

Any chance of Ricardo Vaz Te being classified as a midfielder? Last season was his first injury free season in years, he scored 24 goals, (12 in 18 for West Ham), plus with a start of AVL, swa, FUL, nor,
SUN and qpr he looks like a serious value option, either in mid or up front if he's priced at around 5.5 million, as I expect it will be?

The way West ham set themselves up, he plays pretty much as a winger, hence my theory that he might go in as a midfielder.

I know he's a bit unpredictable and I accept your point about the step up from the championship but he has a bit of experience in the PL with Bolton, I know he didn't do a lot with them but he was only a teenager when he played the majority of his games for them, plus with the start West Ham have he'll surely never have a better chance to hit the ground running........

I kinda agree with you on this forca, it will be really interesting to see if City have the same hunger this year having won the Prem. Their achievement last year was pretty damn good and their home record was incredible, but, United, Chelsea and Arsenal all weren't at their best and didn't have their normally strong seasons. Liverpool were dire. this year should see all those teams much stronger than last year so personally I dont think City will do as well.

Smalling seems more secure at RB than Rafael and Jones who both put in a handful of abysmal performances each (amongst other good performances) last season
Vidic and Evans will be first choice partnership, providing De Gea all the aerial protection a keeper could hope for, Ferdinand will be rotated in on occasion.
Creaking Evra will keep his place unless Baines comes in, if he does Evra will mainly play the big matches (making Baines a tidy FPL option)

We're definitely getting screwed over this year in FPL, I feel it. We'll log in to see Dempsey, Walcott and probably Silva classified as forwards. Wouldn't be surprised at all. Gonna be super hard to pick a well balanced team. Finding the bargain cheapies and OOP quickly this year will be crucial (i.e. the Johnny Evans, the Vorms, Moses, etc.....)

I was thinking Adebayor too, but that striker spot is very very critical now with so many good options out there.
I am thinking, with Bale being a nailed on midfielder option, might have to let go off Adebayor cause Tottenham offer a more nailed on midfield big-hitter vs City or United or maybe even Chelsea(Hazard will eventually be nailed on though)

But my thinking is Bale is more nailed on vs Nani/young/tony V/Silva/Hazard/Mata

Two free hits at 5.0? Suit yourself! 😉

We don't know how they will gel under AVB, and what role Bale will have. Modric may not be there, so a crucial source of ball for Bale will be gone. The midfield will still be excellent, so ...

i think trying to predict who will be the top scorer of the league is stupid:
first of all injury, which can hit anywhere anytime, especially that not long ago a certain dutchman was nicknamed glasslegs
seconf the performance in europe: especially aguero rooney who last season did not have any significant continental football after new year, this season might be different however, with so many options around (balo dzeko tevez on one way, welbeck kagawa hernandez on the other) and rotation will be on hand for the champions league playoffs

on the basis of the fact that City will give the CL more preference over EPL this year ,so Aguero should be subjected to a lot of rotation..

Actually on champ / football manger I would have a dml and dmr in a 2-5-3 formation which worked well. Saying that, kluivert scored 70 goals. I remember champ man 2000 predicted van der Vaart being a beast.

To be honest, FPL scoring is the only parameter I have to judge them... I know Nolan's a bit older (30ish vs 25ish) but surely he's the goal scorer of the two and that's what will score the most points?

They are 3 contenders for the 2nd spot (to partner Verongen) - Kaboul, Dawson, and Caulker (Gallas is also there, but am sure will leave soon)

Wait for a few friendlies to clear things up, but currently it all points to Kaboul starting.
