Mark Hughes continued to bolster his first-team squad last week after snapping up the services of David โ€œJuniorโ€ Hoilett from Blackburn Rovers on a four-year deal. The 22-year-old, who was out of contract, is the seventh new signing to arrive at Loftus Road this summer and reunites with former boss Hughes, having played under the Welshman at Ewood Park earlier in his career:

The young Canadian was on the radar of many clubs this summer โ€“ Borussia MGladbach were one of several suitors but, despite the allure of Champions League football at the Bundesliga club, Hoilett admitted the chance to team up with Hughes was a significant factor in his decision to move to London.

The manager obviously played a big part in my decision to come here. He’s someone I know well here having worked with him and his backroom team at Blackburn. I signed my first professional contract under him and I will always remember that and be grateful to him. Working under such a great manager will help me to develop my skills and further my career.

The Statistics

Hoilett began his career in Blackburnโ€™s youth academy, joining the Ewood Park outfit as a 13-year-old โ€“ whilst in England he was unable to obtain a work permit, however, and was subsequently loaned out in order to earn one in the future. His first game time came in the 2007-8 campaign with SC Paderborn 07 in the German Second Division where, over the course of 13 appearances, he managed a couple of assists and a goal. The following campaign saw Hoilett once again ply his trade in the same league with a stint at St Pauli โ€“ this time he had a more significant impact, netting six times and providing four assists over 26 league games and helping the club to an eighth place finish.

Over the past three seasons, Hoilettโ€™s contribution in terms of both appearances and attacking returns have increased since receiving his work permit at Rovers. He managed 23 league appearances in the 2009/10 campaign but failed to find the net or provide a single assist, while the following campaign produced five goals and an assist in 24 matches as the young Canadian began to finally settle in the Premier League. Last term proved a major turning point in his role for the Ewood Park side โ€“ Hoilett started 34 of Blackburnโ€™s matches and contributed to 13 of their 48 goals with seven goals and six assists, a tally bettered only by Yakubu.

The Prospects

Certainly, Hughes was far from sparing in his praise of the latest acquisition and, unlike many of his summer signings, is more than familiar with Hoilett โ€“ the pairโ€™s time together at Blackburn could well work in the Canadianโ€™s favour:

Junior is a player I know very well. He was just a young boy trying to make his way in the game when I had him at Blackburn. We knew then he was going to have a great future and he’s certainly showed that talent over the last few seasons at Ewood Park. He’s shown he’s a player of top quality and a player that can makes things happen, both on his own and as a team player. He’s certainly a player that will enhance what we’ve got in the group and I am delighted he’s chosen to come to us.

Hoilettโ€™s versatility is also likely to prove beneficial to his game time in the upcoming campaign; able to play on either flank as well as in โ€œthe holeโ€ and up front, he offers plenty of options to the QPR boss โ€“ a factor that could well be crucial when assessing QPRโ€™s Fantasy assets.

His classification across the Fantasy games is perhaps the key issue when determining his appeal; bearing in mind he started just three times up front for Rovers in 2011/12, it’s perhaps surprising Hoilett has been listed as a forward in the Sky Sports game, coming in at a cost of 7.1. FPL earlier today listed him as a 6.5 midfielder, revising their decision to class him as a front man last term.

With a multitude of forward options, Hoilettโ€™s chances of a regular role are likely to come on the flank. The club’s recent friendly matches have seen Hughes roll out 4-4-2 and 4-4-1-1 formations โ€“ heโ€™ll be determined to tighten up on the road after collecting a single point in nine away games since replacing Neil Warnock midway through last season and the latter formation could well be applied away from home. Adel Taarabt impressed in โ€œthe holeโ€ in a recent 5-0 friendly win over Kalantan and may be moved centrally for away games – his potential spot-kick duties, allied with his share of set-pieces and 6.0 price tag, boost the Moroccanโ€™s appeal considerably and suggest Hoilett is likely to struggle to pick up initial investment, however.

Looking at the fixture list, the first couple of Gameweeks offer QPR a chance to get quickly out the blocks. A home clash with Swansea and a trip to Norwich look prosperous but, immediately afterwards, (mci, CHE, tot) is enough to deter us from their attacking assets. The Rโ€™s schedule then takes a turn for the better from Gameweek 6; by then, Hughesโ€™ intentions will hopefully be far more apparent ahead of a run of games that sees (WHM, EVE, RDG, SOT) all visit Loftus Road by Gameweek 12.

Am i crazy not to go with Aguero but Silva for City attacking coverage ? Going with Rooney from the start to avoid wasting a transfer to do Torres - > Rooney when Spurs coverage seems essential GW2 onwards . Would be doing Torres - > Adebayor instead .

I am doing the same have gone for Silva and Rooney.....my thinking is if I want rooney after just one game I should get him in now. Last season I did way to many transfers and whilst some work most I think did not, also I could get an injury gameweek one and then take a hit straight away.

Two Sunderland mids I'm not a fan of
No Spurs and no plans to get any for GW2 could hurt
Kompany over Lescott means .5 you can't spend somewhere else, might be worth it
Holt could struggle this year with a new coach/philosophy
Pog is still a big ?
      I don't like the keepers.

Could work out ok, but I would go back to the drawing board if it was my team. Good luck!

My thoughts - Set pieces, playing in the hole, settled in the team, good form at the end of the season and the cheaper option is making me think that keeping hold of Adel is the best bet. But one strop and I will change in an instant. Hoilet is at the top of my watchlist (along with Lallana, Michu and 'permission to mock... Downing)

Cole ahead of Luiz for security? Rafael isn't nailed on, make sure defenders rotate.
Don't like your keepers at all and not sold on Lennon.

Luiz will be secure if Terry is suspended. He usually has good attacking returns too.
United will be down to playing Rafael by default the way injuries are doing.
Keepers are crap but the fixtures are good for a while.
Lennon is a punt. Could be Ramires.

          Bego Foster
          Cole Figs Demel Gorkss Hangeland
          Silva Bale Kagawa Bannan Noble
          Torres Tevez Ade

Ade in there assuming he joins Spurs.
          Defence and keepers rotate
Bannan only there until I find someone better to rotate with Noble.

I don't like relying on Wigan, Reading and West Ham for clean sheets.

It's not easy finding someone to rotate with Noble as the first 6 gameweeks for him are actually pretty solid. I love the team, very similar to mine. Assuming you have 2mil in the bank for the Rooney switch?

Dembele is a quality player but won't score very many. Not sure Hoolahan will be as good this year either.

Might want to try Taarabt or go up .5/ down 1m.

Why am I not convinced by any of the Swansea options?

With the change of manager I'm concerned in investing in the defence at the same price as Newcastle and more than Sunderland, Villa, etc.

Dyer isn't nailed on, Sinclair is overpriced (imo), Michu is new to the league.

Graham is perhaps the 'safe' option but at the minute I've got a Rooney, Aguero, Bent frontline which just looks lovely and I can't bring myself to break it up.

The ticker just looks so lovely and blue... ๐Ÿ˜•

Exactly my thinking, although I think Dyer is pretty nailed on - Routledge played at the back end of last season because Dyer was injured/recovering from injury.

Perhaps, I think at 6.5 I'd have had him but 7 just feels expensive. It's not a particularly logical basis for a decision but I can't quite bring myself to put him in!

Don't like Figueroa . Yes, he rotates well with Hughes and Cuellar but it's Wigan afterall . Gervinho is a good shout especially with Giroud and Podolski expected to miss the start of the season .

          why no love for Nolan?

at just 6 mil, he's scored 17, 12, 12 goals respectively in his last 3 seasons.

Yeah Noble's 1 mil cheaper and on pens, but he's a DM and has scored 2, 4 and 8 goals in his last 3...
