Reading’s summer recruitment drive showed no signs of letting up after the club announced the capture of Chris Gunter from Nottingham Forest in a deal rumoured to be in the region of £2.5m. The 22-year-old arrived at the Madejski Stadium on a three-year contract, with the option of a further year, and is the sixth player to join Brian McDermott’s side since the Royals clinched the npower Championship title last season.

Snapped up on the same day as Adrian Mariappa from Watford, Gunter’s arrival boosts McDermott’s backline options and perhaps puts him in the driving seat to nail down the right-back role ahead of Shaun Cummings for the upcoming campaign. Cummings was the Royals’ first-choice option last time round but failed to impress from an attacking perspective, with no goals or assists to his name; Gunter’s speed and attacking sensibilities should add a key ingredient to the Royals play from deep and affords Fantasy managers an intriguing option in the cut-price bracket.

Upon completion of his move, the new boy revealed McDermott played a major part in persuading him to leave the City Ground after three full seasons as a Forest regular:

You only have to look at what Reading have achieved in the last couple of years to realise what a good manager Brian McDermott is. I also spoke to Garath McCleary when he joined Reading from Nottingham Forest and the first thing he mentioned was the manager too. So when I met Brian myself he was exactly what I expected. He played a massive part in my decision to join this club. I’m yet to meet anyone who has anything but massively positive things to say about him and the club.

The Statistics

A prodigious talent, Gunter signed for Cardiff City’s youth academy at the age of eight and penned his first professional contract less than two weeks after his 17th birthday in August 2006. The full-back featured 15 times, returning one assist in his debut campaign and, after a further 13 appearances in his second season for the Welsh outfit, was snapped up by Spurs midway through 2007-08 in a deal thought to be worth £2m.

After so much early promise, Gunter’s career came to an abrupt halt at White Hart Lane, however; he made just five league appearances during his time at the club before moving to Forest on loan in March 2009 – the brief loan spell saw Gunter appear eight times and his impressive performances were enough to convince the club to fork out £1.75m for his services in July 2009. From then on, he quickly established himself as a vital first-team member; Gunter has missed just five games in the past three seasons, appearing 133 times for the City Ground side and returning two goals and 13 assists.

The Prospects

There’s no doubt Gunter looks an intriguing option for Fantasy managers eyeing up the Reading defence. Ian Harte initially looked the best bet; with set-piece duties and spot-kicks in the bag, the former Leeds man returned four goals and eight assists in just 32 appearances last term but the subsequent acquisition of Nicky Shorey clearly places plenty doubt around both players’ game time at left-back.

In the middle, it’s a similar scenario. Alex Pearce and Kaspars Gorkss appeared to be nailed-on but Mariappa’s arrival means there is uncertainty over McDermott’s preferred central defensive partnership right now, suggesting Gunter, at right-back, could be the most secure. Last season he returned a goal and five assists; a significant improvement on Cummings’ attacking output, though it should be noted that Mariappa is versatile enough to play at right-back, affording the Royals boss further options in defence.

Priced at 4.0 in both Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and the Sky Sports game, the former Forest man will pick up plenty interest if he manages to cement a role as a regular at the Madejski. The fact that Reading were relatively reliable in terms of home/away defensive returns last term is likely to make it easier for Fantasy managers to bench Gunter when the Royals head out on the road; 12 clean sheets and 18 goals conceded at home compared to eight and 23 respectively away illustrates the fact that McDermott’s men were defensively superior in front of their own fans.

Early interest in Gunter could be tempered by an ankle injury suffered in training that has kept him out of the pre-season reckoning. The latest reports suggest that a scan on the injury revealed no serious damage, indicating that the full-back will be in the equation for the season kick-off.

With a double Gameweek to start off the season as Reading host Stoke before a tricky trip to Chelsea, we should quickly get an idea of McDermott’s thinking for the season ahead. As mentioned above, the home games are likely to be targeted as potential for points but with only Spurs and Newcastle visiting by the end of Gameweek 8, it may well be that we take a step back from Reading’s defensive assets, with their Madejski schedule taking a turn for the better from Gameweek 9 onwards.

Spurs are stacked at CB with Vertonghen, Kaboul, Dawson and Caulker has looked really impressive at the olympics, then there's Gallas also. Personally I'm gonna stay away from tot CB's until a few games in when hopefully they'll be a clear starting duo.

    Nobody considering Baines after GW1?

Granted 7.0's a bit of an ask but as previously stated, he's got killer fixtures for a good while which hopefully means clean sheets. Plus he's on pens/set pieces and surely the likes of Jelavic and so on will increase his assist output?

I see your point but putting £7.0m on an Everton Defender so early on is a punt too far for me, there is much better value offered by the mid-table sides, who arguably have much better fixtures than the toffees.

I was hoping nobody would start me thinking about this. I always have him in my team for long parts of the season as I think with his attacking potential he offers great value even at a high price, but I really cant seem to get him into my team this year without taking out a player I really want so I was trying to ignore him.

I've seen two games and he seems good. Marin has been very impressive, but I doubt he'll start.
Anyway, it's a gamble between the two. I think Hazard will start "in the hole" with Mata out on the wing, but Mata has some PL experience so I'm not sure. But Mata was at the Olympics so he might be tired. It's really a coin flip.

Take a look at pre-season friendlies. I wouldn't risk, but it's your choice of course;) If you don't want to pay for Sinclair or Michu I would go for much safer Graham option as Swansea early nice fixtures cover.

naaaah, they wouldn't sell him when their only backup is frimprong (injury-prone with a temper) and diaby (who barely played at all), unless they get m'vila, which is a cold lead.

Yeah but Song isn't really a DM anymore. Plus we have coquelin (who will get a decent amount of first team action this season, whether at RB or CDM).
I wouldn't rule out M'Vila yet. If reports are to be believed, he has about three and a half medicals a day for the last two months.

I'm not talking trash but if you're basing that on preseason stories then I'd forget about it. Coquelin was a shoddy fullback at best last season, and only saw game time as a cdm during the injury crisis midseason.

We don't have a better right back in Sagna's absence. Jenkinson is shit, Yennaris isn't good enough either. Coquelin would be my best bet if I were to guess on who will start at RB.
Coquelin will cover for Song only during injuries. But Wilshire + Arteta swapping as CDMs sounds good too. But Wilshire is back only in October, so...

    Howard, Federici

    Lescott, Clichy, Rangel (Demel, Clyne)

    Lamps, Siggy, Kagawa, Michu (Pienaar)

    Torres, Tevez, Petric

week 2 lamps->best looking sunderland option, bench petric (mun)
week 3 torres or tevez->best looking newcastle option

and yes i CAN plan all that and it will be beautiful. Rooney Schmooney. there will be other (C) options gw2.

Unless you buy Kompany + Lescott, you aren't exactly doubling up since everyone else is a rotation risk. And if Agger comes, even Lescott's place is in jeopardy. And Kompany is too expensive.

Could have just put it slightly better, or offered an explanation in his first post. But really, nothing big enough to go on about this.

I'll join your league, but I have stopped managing my team halfway into the season. If you don't mind taking that risk, let me know. I'll sign up. Also, I'm not that good.

Nope, there is no problem with not having a 'generic' team.

No... I hate having the generic team and jumping on to bandwagons. I do it, but I hate it. Never get scared, though.

I wouldn't be worried if I was you Tosey. You know what you are doing.

I'm finding it very hard this year to select my keeper combo. I'm soused to ubercheap h/a rotation that I find it hard to say follow the DDG train.

I wish Jafalad will show his face and convince me to stick to what has worked in the past for me. But hen again, i need to change to ever have a chance of having a top 1k finish.

i went with ruddy/vorm last year as both were 4m, i looked at the rotations this year and liked the look of begovic/schwarzer but looking at last season fulham only kept a few home cleanies i think

man city kept 12 in the last 23 games so its hart for me with daniels as hes the least selected 4m keeper and therefore wont drop in price (i hope)

Yeah, the Vorm pick last year was brilliant. I got onto the Krul/Vorm wagon early on last year with my WC but recall that others(ENR) did well by holing back on the WC.

I just hate "wasting" transfers on fixing keepers during the season so might just have to go the DDG route. I just wish Dempsey will sod off to LPool. It would mean one less headache for me.
