Reading’s summer recruitment drive showed no signs of letting up after the club announced the capture of Chris Gunter from Nottingham Forest in a deal rumoured to be in the region of £2.5m. The 22-year-old arrived at the Madejski Stadium on a three-year contract, with the option of a further year, and is the sixth player to join Brian McDermott’s side since the Royals clinched the npower Championship title last season.

Snapped up on the same day as Adrian Mariappa from Watford, Gunter’s arrival boosts McDermott’s backline options and perhaps puts him in the driving seat to nail down the right-back role ahead of Shaun Cummings for the upcoming campaign. Cummings was the Royals’ first-choice option last time round but failed to impress from an attacking perspective, with no goals or assists to his name; Gunter’s speed and attacking sensibilities should add a key ingredient to the Royals play from deep and affords Fantasy managers an intriguing option in the cut-price bracket.

Upon completion of his move, the new boy revealed McDermott played a major part in persuading him to leave the City Ground after three full seasons as a Forest regular:

You only have to look at what Reading have achieved in the last couple of years to realise what a good manager Brian McDermott is. I also spoke to Garath McCleary when he joined Reading from Nottingham Forest and the first thing he mentioned was the manager too. So when I met Brian myself he was exactly what I expected. He played a massive part in my decision to join this club. I’m yet to meet anyone who has anything but massively positive things to say about him and the club.

The Statistics

A prodigious talent, Gunter signed for Cardiff City’s youth academy at the age of eight and penned his first professional contract less than two weeks after his 17th birthday in August 2006. The full-back featured 15 times, returning one assist in his debut campaign and, after a further 13 appearances in his second season for the Welsh outfit, was snapped up by Spurs midway through 2007-08 in a deal thought to be worth £2m.

After so much early promise, Gunter’s career came to an abrupt halt at White Hart Lane, however; he made just five league appearances during his time at the club before moving to Forest on loan in March 2009 – the brief loan spell saw Gunter appear eight times and his impressive performances were enough to convince the club to fork out £1.75m for his services in July 2009. From then on, he quickly established himself as a vital first-team member; Gunter has missed just five games in the past three seasons, appearing 133 times for the City Ground side and returning two goals and 13 assists.

The Prospects

There’s no doubt Gunter looks an intriguing option for Fantasy managers eyeing up the Reading defence. Ian Harte initially looked the best bet; with set-piece duties and spot-kicks in the bag, the former Leeds man returned four goals and eight assists in just 32 appearances last term but the subsequent acquisition of Nicky Shorey clearly places plenty doubt around both players’ game time at left-back.

In the middle, it’s a similar scenario. Alex Pearce and Kaspars Gorkss appeared to be nailed-on but Mariappa’s arrival means there is uncertainty over McDermott’s preferred central defensive partnership right now, suggesting Gunter, at right-back, could be the most secure. Last season he returned a goal and five assists; a significant improvement on Cummings’ attacking output, though it should be noted that Mariappa is versatile enough to play at right-back, affording the Royals boss further options in defence.

Priced at 4.0 in both Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and the Sky Sports game, the former Forest man will pick up plenty interest if he manages to cement a role as a regular at the Madejski. The fact that Reading were relatively reliable in terms of home/away defensive returns last term is likely to make it easier for Fantasy managers to bench Gunter when the Royals head out on the road; 12 clean sheets and 18 goals conceded at home compared to eight and 23 respectively away illustrates the fact that McDermott’s men were defensively superior in front of their own fans.

Early interest in Gunter could be tempered by an ankle injury suffered in training that has kept him out of the pre-season reckoning. The latest reports suggest that a scan on the injury revealed no serious damage, indicating that the full-back will be in the equation for the season kick-off.

With a double Gameweek to start off the season as Reading host Stoke before a tricky trip to Chelsea, we should quickly get an idea of McDermott’s thinking for the season ahead. As mentioned above, the home games are likely to be targeted as potential for points but with only Spurs and Newcastle visiting by the end of Gameweek 8, it may well be that we take a step back from Reading’s defensive assets, with their Madejski schedule taking a turn for the better from Gameweek 9 onwards.

Just stumbled across an interesting stat while looking at goalkeepers

Last season Szczesny had 131 shots on target to deal with

    Joe Hart had 128

Szczesny conceded 49 where as Hart conceded just 29....could it be that despite some noticable bad performances by there defence last year, that Arsenals problem still lies in goal???

Do the stats differentiate between shots on target from inside the box and those from outside? If not it could be that City's opponents were shooting from farther out meaning the saves were easier for Hart, whereas the Arsenal defence allowed more shots from good positions inside the box.

also doesn't consider pressure on the attackers. Arsenal play high line which means if a player can get thru he will most likely have a clear shot on goal. City's defense is deep which means clear shots on goal are less likely

The stats that i'm referring to don't account for this but I highly doubt that if hart was in goal for arsenal there would have been a difference of 20 goals regardless of where shots were taken from

I actually watched a lot of Arsenal games last season, and I would say that Szczesny made some brilliant saves and was actually a top keeper. So often goals would leak in from weak, undisciplined defenders.

WUM = wind up merchant. Y'know, just saying outrageous things in order to provoke a response.

"Gervinho will be the next RVP - scoring 25+ goals this year."

              ... and from Urban Dictionary:

A person who, on a message forum of some type, attacks and flames other members of the forum for any of a number of reasons. A real Flamer usually attacks threads because he/she disagrees with the content of the thread or the lack thereof. The difference between a Flamer and somebody who merely disagrees is that a flamer is inappropriate in their responces.

They must not be confused with Trolls.

And where should I be getting my information. If last season is anything to go by, then you shouldn't really pick any Villa players, but I'm hoping Lambert can instill some attacking prowess into the team and we will hopefully get a hand from some decent fixtures.

Best of the 9.0-10.0 mids for start of season?

I reckon it's between mata, bale,Silva, dempsey and valencia. With most being able to afford 2/5 of that group. Leaning towards Mata and Bale myself, but would like to hear other views.

Interestingly, per 90 on the field valencia and a number of others matched Silva or even exceeded him on a points per 90 basis. Very consistent player though as he played more minutes then allot of the mids in that group.

A defender, yeah. I'm even thinking of drinking the Lampard kool-aid. Which just goes to show that alcohol, indeed, kills brain cells.

But, as I said elsewhere, I'll be looking verrry close at theCity/Chels line-ups, form, and positioning in the CS. Until then, the team fiddling is just a time dump.

Sensible enough, only word of warning id have is that sometimes one game, even if it is all we have to work on can be misleading when it comes to form.

    DDG- Federici

    Hazard - Kagawa - Michu - Pienaar - Guthrie
    Aguero - Torres - Petric

    0.5 in the bank

too many gambles for me too at the begining:
      DDG not 100%
      clichy competing with kolarof
demel: new recruits may challange his spot
      kagawa?
      hazard?

same here. im always looking for better attacking players. someone said above and i agree, valencia is as nailed on as anyone else out wide for utd, and he is a proven fantasy commodity. If i felt hughes were nailed on, id much rather go hughes/valencia. Im just wondering if its still worth going valencia if hughes misses every 3rd or 4th game, considering i have 2 defenders on my bench every week.

If Hughes and Kagawa are both not guaranteed to play then surely choose the option with Valencia. I'd rather have 4.5m on my bench than 8.5. But then I'm trying a no-risk strategy this season after last year's debacle - it could be a nice punt.

      A) by far

I'm not at all convinced Hughes is nailed on and there is a possibility Valencia may start the season at RB with Rafael recovering from the Olympics and Jones playing CB due to defensive injuries at United.

grrr. yeah ive considered all this. even when tony v made the occasional start there last year he was still a big threat. i guess im just worried putting out 8.5 for someone ive only seen play a couple times for borussia dortmund. ok ok hangeland and kagawa it is.

Hmm...I picked Fabio because he may play mid. Harte on all set pieces, Fox had like 11 assists last season. Tomkins, recent scout pick 🙂 Any ideas on how to improve the defence?

Mid: I may get rid of Sinclair. Noble on all set pieces. Should I look at Bale/Siggy/Mata instead of Lamps?

          - Fabio will not play in midfield once Hoilett fits in. They've already got loads of mids fighting it out.
          - Harte not nailed on. Will get rotated with Shorey.
          - Doubling up on West Ham is a BAD idea.
          - Would you want Dempsey even if he went to Anfield?

How about ShawX and Hangelaand instead of Tomkins and Harte? Rangel instead of Fabio?

Bale/Siggy instead of Dempsey? (Answer is no I wouldn't so I could wait on that)

Harte won't start aheah of Shorey.
I wouldn't double on WHU defence.
Defensively it needs a lot of work.

Nice midfield and possibly the huge punt on Lamps might work.

      Nice attack.

I would throw at least one CHE defender in there for the DGW.

    Morning all.

Ok so i am nailing down my starting line up. Looking long term so have 2 double rotating defenders and a biggy.

    Good goalkeeper rotation.

Lamps to a 6.5 to upgrade to rooney and acole to city/ united, however stuff pans out.

Really trying not to do more than 5 points hits this year after doing silly amounts in previous years

    Freidel, Federici
    ACole, Fabio, Clyne, Cuellar, Tomkins
    Lampard, Bale. Kagawa, Pienaar, Noble
    Tevez, Bent, Torres

    What do you think?

    Cech / Green

since you answered my question, only fair i answer yours. your team looks good but that def looks a little shaky. i know aguero is much safer than tevez, but if tevez stays, i believe he will play a large role in city's season. so if you downgrade him, you'll have 2.5 more. but i'm sure you want to trade torres for rooney, so then you will have 3 mill left, in which case upgrade the def
