Readingโ€™s summer recruitment drive showed no signs of letting up after the club announced the capture of Chris Gunter from Nottingham Forest in a deal rumoured to be in the region of ยฃ2.5m. The 22-year-old arrived at the Madejski Stadium on a three-year contract, with the option of a further year, and is the sixth player to join Brian McDermottโ€™s side since the Royals clinched the npower Championship title last season.

Snapped up on the same day as Adrian Mariappa from Watford, Gunterโ€™s arrival boosts McDermottโ€™s backline options and perhaps puts him in the driving seat to nail down the right-back role ahead of Shaun Cummings for the upcoming campaign. Cummings was the Royalsโ€™ first-choice option last time round but failed to impress from an attacking perspective, with no goals or assists to his name; Gunterโ€™s speed and attacking sensibilities should add a key ingredient to the Royals play from deep and affords Fantasy managers an intriguing option in the cut-price bracket.

Upon completion of his move, the new boy revealed McDermott played a major part in persuading him to leave the City Ground after three full seasons as a Forest regular:

You only have to look at what Reading have achieved in the last couple of years to realise what a good manager Brian McDermott is. I also spoke to Garath McCleary when he joined Reading from Nottingham Forest and the first thing he mentioned was the manager too. So when I met Brian myself he was exactly what I expected. He played a massive part in my decision to join this club. I’m yet to meet anyone who has anything but massively positive things to say about him and the club.

The Statistics

A prodigious talent, Gunter signed for Cardiff Cityโ€™s youth academy at the age of eight and penned his first professional contract less than two weeks after his 17th birthday in August 2006. The full-back featured 15 times, returning one assist in his debut campaign and, after a further 13 appearances in his second season for the Welsh outfit, was snapped up by Spurs midway through 2007-08 in a deal thought to be worth ยฃ2m.

After so much early promise, Gunterโ€™s career came to an abrupt halt at White Hart Lane, however; he made just five league appearances during his time at the club before moving to Forest on loan in March 2009 โ€“ the brief loan spell saw Gunter appear eight times and his impressive performances were enough to convince the club to fork out ยฃ1.75m for his services in July 2009. From then on, he quickly established himself as a vital first-team member; Gunter has missed just five games in the past three seasons, appearing 133 times for the City Ground side and returning two goals and 13 assists.

The Prospects

Thereโ€™s no doubt Gunter looks an intriguing option for Fantasy managers eyeing up the Reading defence. Ian Harte initially looked the best bet; with set-piece duties and spot-kicks in the bag, the former Leeds man returned four goals and eight assists in just 32 appearances last term but the subsequent acquisition of Nicky Shorey clearly places plenty doubt around both playersโ€™ game time at left-back.

In the middle, itโ€™s a similar scenario. Alex Pearce and Kaspars Gorkss appeared to be nailed-on but Mariappaโ€™s arrival means there is uncertainty over McDermottโ€™s preferred central defensive partnership right now, suggesting Gunter, at right-back, could be the most secure. Last season he returned a goal and five assists; a significant improvement on Cummingsโ€™ attacking output, though it should be noted that Mariappa is versatile enough to play at right-back, affording the Royals boss further options in defence.

Priced at 4.0 in both Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and the Sky Sports game, the former Forest man will pick up plenty interest if he manages to cement a role as a regular at the Madejski. The fact that Reading were relatively reliable in terms of home/away defensive returns last term is likely to make it easier for Fantasy managers to bench Gunter when the Royals head out on the road; 12 clean sheets and 18 goals conceded at home compared to eight and 23 respectively away illustrates the fact that McDermottโ€™s men were defensively superior in front of their own fans.

Early interest in Gunter could be tempered by an ankle injury suffered in training that has kept him out of the pre-season reckoning. The latest reports suggest that a scan on the injury revealed no serious damage, indicating that the full-back will be in the equation for the season kick-off.

With a double Gameweek to start off the season as Reading host Stoke before a tricky trip to Chelsea, we should quickly get an idea of McDermottโ€™s thinking for the season ahead. As mentioned above, the home games are likely to be targeted as potential for points but with only Spurs and Newcastle visiting by the end of Gameweek 8, it may well be that we take a step back from Readingโ€™s defensive assets, with their Madejski schedule taking a turn for the better from Gameweek 9 onwards.

Don't you want to see how Hazard plays first before selecting him?

How about the likes of Bale/Siggy/Dempsey/Mata/Lampard for Silva and Hazard.

I would also get in some more set piece takers. At the moment you only have: Noble and maybe Aguero/Graham.

People talking about noble vs. nolan and 'cannot understand' why ppl are choosing noble over nolan

    noble is 5 mil

its a promoted team, so less money you invest the better off

noble was in championship team of the season and nolan wasn't

yes nolan has the experience in the top flight but clearly noble isn't terrible and has a good season behind him

Tevez is training very well and Mancini seems very happy with him ATM. And we all know what he's capable of. Unless they get RVP or ship Tevez off he looks an amazing candidate, considering Mancini can still accomodate Balo as a winger.

Balo is the query though. Does he start in place of Tevez 50/50 even 60/40 is too much bench time for my liking, even considering how cheap he is. Surely Balo will not be happy plonked on a wing for long.

Mancini and Balo both know he's the only MC forward capable of playing in the wing. And Balo will be happy as long as he starts. Even at Inter he played mostly on the wing. I think (if things stay this way) the only threat for Tevez not starting is called Tevez.

Would like to hear people's thoughts on Balance v Big hitters just for the attack.

    Currently i've gone balance.

    Mid = 2x Big Hitter, 2x mid ranger, 1 x benchy
Forw =2 x Big Hitter 1x mid range

Is this system better though? Essentially sacrificing 2 mid range for an additional BH.

    Mid = 3x Big Hitter*, 1x mid ranger*, 2 x benchy*
    Forw =2 x Big Hitter 1x benchy*

    Friedel - Federici
    Ivanovic - Clichy - Williams - Clyne - Gunter
    Silva - Hazard - Holman - Maloney - Guthrie
    Aguero - Torres - Graham

2.0m spare for Torres -> Rooney gameweek 2
Straight swap Hazard -> Bale gameweek 3

Sorry, but for me Silva is guaranteed to be one of the top and most consistent performers and I intend to keep him. I am confident that Holman can secure a starting place under Lambert, and be involved in many of villa's attacks.

Defence is fine, toying with the idea of 2 chelsea defenders myself, given the minefield of their midfield.
Not a big fan of Yaya, would look at upgrading him with some of that 4 million you have burning a hole in your pocket. Silva would still leave you with 2 mil if you fancied the Torres -> Rooney switch for GW2.

I've come to the conclusion that in the same way FPL limits us to three bench players, real managers should have the same restriction. Trying to work out gametime for some players is hurting my poor head.

        At the moment it is:

        DDG- Federici
Ivan – Clichy – Hangeland– Cuellar – Demel
        Hazard – Kagawa – Michu – Pienaar – Guthrie
        Aguero – Torres – Petric

        0.5 in the bank

I really like your Keepers and Defence. Not very sure abaut Pienaar(considering EVE slow start) and for an extra .5 much better options than Guthrie ( Maloney, Noble ). Kagawa a bit risky too, but might pay off big time. I would monitor Bale/Siggy(huge potential). A Norwich budget MID might fit nicely into ur team as well(Snodgrass or Hoolahan). Like your forwards too. I think once you fix your midfield a bit you'll end up with a superteam. Cheers

@ the moment mine is :

Friedel I Federici (like the rotation)

Ivanovic I CAshley I Hangeland I Rangel I Demel (Iva or Cashley to MCI def after DGW??)

          Bale I Silva I Michu I Snodgrass I Noble

Torres I Tevez I Pogrebnyak (can still get Roon)

          2 mil.

regarding tevez vs aguero, ive always had aguero in mind, but i keep looking at how ive stretched my budget in other positions, and that extra dosh can turn 5 positions into safer positions. so im beginning to think its worth the risk. if i were mancini i feel like i can keep everyone happier overall by accomodating tevez. balo had a nice spotlight in the euros and im sure mancini is assuring him of CL starts and what have you. It may evolve into something different after several weeks, but if mancini begins the season with tevez benched, its just going to create the same problems again. Id say assuming health tevez starts 5 out of first 6 gws, but gets subbed off for balo more often than not on 70 minutes. we know tevez can go bananas with 70 minutes, so i still think its a fantastic price. if he starts well too, he becomes a dirt cheap armband option. if he starts the shield and doesnt look pants, Im IN!

Anyone else saying fire to the rain and going for Dembele? I like the idea of him...Currently deciding between:

    1) Dembele
    2) Pienaar
    3) Song
    4) Fellaini
    5) A. Nother

My guess is Pienaar would win on here, but I have a feeling about Dembele and Fellaini...Especially if Fellaini continues as a 2nd striker...
