Sam Allardyce continued his summer of squad restructuring earlier this week by bringing James Collins back to West Ham on a four-year contract. After spending three years at Aston Villa, the centre-half returns to Upton Park in a deal thought to be in the region of £2.5m and offers the Hammers plenty of top-flight experience in the heart of defence for the season ahead:

The move ends a summer of speculation which has linked the Welshman with a number of clubs following the arrival of Paul Lambert to Villa Park. With the former Norwich boss adding Dutchman Ron Vlaar to the ranks, Collins’ days appeared numbered at the midlands outfit and, as he revealed to the club’s official website, the chance of coming back to east London was one that he simply could not refuse:

It’s great to be back. As soon as I knew the interest was there from West Ham I couldn’t wait to get down and sign. I had a great affinity with the club and the fans when I was here the first time and I enjoyed my time here so much last time that it wasn’t a hard decision to make, to be honest. I think everyone knew that I didn’t really want to leave when I did [in 2009] because I was enjoying my time here so much. I’ve come back and I’m a much better player this time around so I can’t wait to get cracking and show the fans that I am a better player and can put in the performances on the pitch.

The Statistics

Collins’ career began in his native country with Cardiff City. Joining the club as a trainee in August 2000, he made his debut three months later in the FA Cup but initially struggled to establish himself as a first-team regular – over the course of five seasons at the club he made just 66 league appearances and scored three goals before West Ham came calling in 2005.

A combination of injury and competition from others blighted his first stint with the Hammers, however; Collins failed to play half of his side’s league games in any of his four seasons at Upton Park and managed just two goals in 51 league matches. He made his way to Aston Villa on the final day of the 2009 summer transfer window and finally nailed down a regular spot at the midlands outfit. Striking up a partnership with Richard Dunne, he was a key member of Villa’s backline and featured 91 times over his three seasons in the top-flight, finding the net on five occasions.

Collins has also turned out for his country at every level from Under 19 to Under 21 and has scored twice in 39 appearances for the senior side.

The Prospects

Collins’ arrival at Upton Park looks set to place major question marks over the game time of Winston Reid in the heart of the Hammers’ backline. The New Zealand international missed three months of last season with a shoulder injury and resultantly made just 30 starts – James Tomkins, in comparison, began all but one of the league games in Allardyce’s first campaign and certainly looks to be in the driving seat to partner Collins in the upcoming campaign.

Of the three promoted clubs, West Ham returned the fewest clean sheets – they accrued 17 last time out and, with just seven from 23 home matches, it’s obvious they need to tighten up at the back if they are to stand any chance of staying afloat. From a Fantasy perspective, however, Collins is likely to suffer from his initial pricing as a Villa player – coming in at 5.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), he is more expensive than all of his defensive team mates; bearing in mind that George McCartney and Guy Demel are priced as little as 4.0, he should struggle to pick up investment if either of the aforementioned pair can nail down a role at left-back and right-back respectively. It’s a similar scenario in the Sky Sports game, too; Collins comes at a cost of 5.4 – prior to his arrival, Tomkins was the priciest Hammers defender at a mere 4.1.

It’s a frustrating situation for Fantasy managers as Collins’ game is clearly suited to the EA Sports Player Performance Index. Last term, he picked up 12 bonus points – the same as Vincent Kompany, for example, and the second highest for Villa, despite their poor performances under Alex McLeish.

Certainly, the Hammers’ strong opening schedule is likely to see substantial investment come their way. Ironically, Collins welcomes his former club to Upton Park in the first Gameweek of the season and with home clashes against Fulham and Sunderland, in addition to trips to (swa, nor, qpr), he certainly has the potential to produce the points early on, though that price tag will almost certainly be enough to deter the vast majority looking for a route into Allardyce’s defence.

    Kagawa or Lampard?

Kagawa looks interesting in that price but rotation risk is a huge worry.
Lampard always been a great fantasy pick in previous seasons and now playing along Hazard will surely get him lot of penalties.

    Your opinion guys?

I personally can't see lampard just vanishing from the team -- he's been there, done that, and RDM will need a strong start -- oscar, hazard, marin are unproven in a physical league...id imagine smart management would be the home games to ease them in. And who knows with Sir Alex, he can drop anyone at any time. But that's the gamble.

I don't think Kagawa is a rotational risk at all. The rotation risk in the MUN midfield is Nani/Young (stay away from them) As for Lampard, he hasn't looked his best for a long time now so I would stay away from here. Kagawa would be my pick as he looks pure class and I have a feeling both him and Rooney will lead MUN to a premier league title in 2012/13

I am afraid that Fergie is just doing his work to lift up the Kagawa hype and gives him some confidence. He is a great player, but I'm not really sure he will pick up immediately in EPL.

Really have not much choices in the 8.5-9.5 bucket, already have Bale, maybe Siggurdson and double on Spurs midfield?

Or just go with Michu and use the extra money on defense?
        What do you think?

fergie's also just come out and said hernandez will be important this season, and he's also been bigging up welbeck recently. most likely neither of those guys plays when kagawa is in the team, unless he plans on dropping a certain mr. rooney. of course he's a rotation risk.

lampard is arguably an even bigger rotation risk though.

I prefer Santon if you're going for Newc defence, he's good going forward and I think Pardew loves him so no worries about nailed-on-ness.
I would worry that you only have 1 Chelsea player for the DGW.

he had 0 goals 1 assist in 24 games last year. 9 of those he played less than one half. Have fun getting 1 point and no clean sheet from him. I wouldn't be surprised if Ryan Taylor took his LB spot back now that S.Taylor is back considering the effectiveness of their partnership.

The 9 games were sub appearances while he was making his way into Pardew's first 11.
I agree 1 assist was poor, but did you watch Newcastle games? I thought he was unlucky not to have had more...one of the most attacking FBs in the league.
I wouled be MASIVELY surprised if Raylor took the LB spot.

I was considering Chelsea attacking coverage as well, but finding a reliable midfielder who will get good minutes in both games seems a tricky prospect. Haxard being new to the league as well is a concern. Might consider Mata if he looks likely to start.

Why not avoid the Chelsea MF conundrum and get a second defender and/ or Torres?
You would need to lose your Reading GK/ Mid, though, to avoid a headache in GW3.

The popular Torres move in GW 1 is not for me I think. If it was not for the double, few would consider him after his last few seasons. Till he shows form in the league again, i'm sticking to safer choices 🙂

I think he's "fairly" nailed on. I think he only started 4 league games less than Lescott last year. The only worry is that Kolorov (if he stays) may start some of the easier home games...the very one's that you need Clichy to play in.

way too much on defense/keepers. cabaye isn't the best fpl prospect. moses might move in which case he'll be on the bench half the time. ba has been crap ever since cisse arrived. norwich fixtures are dubious and holt wanted to leave so might be less enthusiastic this season. walker's just coming back from injury, could potentially be rusty, but should be fine. rio lacks attacking threat - why not have DDG, downgrade your second keeper and get a better defender in? someone from chelsea or city ideally as you have little cover for either.

I've had a thought that's been bothering me for a while. Everyone says the players participating in the Olympics will be giving a rest when the season starts though the games end about a week or so before the season begins.
Wouldnt the managers prefer a player who has had some competitive game time under his belt to start the season rather than give them a rest? When the season starts aren't the majority of the players going to be playing week in week out anyways?

i agree with your reasoning, but managers do tend to put a lot of emphasis on resting players these days, so it's not easy to call. RDM said he'll be easing mata into action this season, for example, but that may have changed with spain's early elimination. the worries about de gea are ludicrous though.

n'zogbia is historically fantastic in FPL and under a new (very attacking) manager could flourish, but obviously that's a bit of a risk, especially given concerns about his work ethic. pienaar should be good again but has never really done very well in FPL even when playing well, oddly. michu was the highest scoring mid in la liga last season i believe, but again, depends on whether you're willing to rely on a new boy. (i have michu for the record)

i actually think gibbs/koscielny/vermaelen/sagna is a great back four (gibbs being the weak link i suppose), but my GOD you need a right back badly to cover sagna's injury. otherwise the jenkinson farce shall returneth

i agree, but midfielders are rubbish this year. silva is no longer as nailed on IMO after his long summer and his very obvious fatigue last season, utd and chelsea are just impossible to predict week after week (inc. valencia and kagawa IMO), arsenal have crappy fixtures...

that just leaves bale really. i'm not sure how bale will fit into the new system, and he's recovering from an injury yet again, and i'm not sure he'll get more points than any of those three forwards.

I'm going double Chelsea at the back also. Love the Rangel pick.
As you say the MF is weak, but your forwards are all heavy hitters. My personal preference would be Torres instead of Hazard ( but I see you have Hazard captain, so you won't be for turning!)
      Your keepers suck, btw 😉
I hope you've got a good plan for GW3, with 3 chels and 1 Reading

i have 2 reading actually 😛 the plan is to drop two chelsea guys by then though, i have a few possibilities in mind but i'd have to watch the opening week or two first...

i just do not trust torres. i don't believe in this so called revival AT ALL haha. i'm not that bothered about hazard but i need some attacking cover for chelsea for the DGW, and he seems the most nailed on of the midfielders, and is both a goalscoring and assisting machine (albeit in a weaker league).

also, i know the keepers suck but it seems like the least important position on the pitch, in the sense that cheap keepers often do as well as expensive keepers (not the case in other positions, generally speaking). you just have to look at last year's point totals...

he's fine as far as i'm aware, but certainly not nailed on. most of us thought he'd be leaving after AVB took over, and i was surprised when he announced VDV's importance to his plans. i'm not sure how he's going to fit into a team with siggy at all; in fact, i'm willing to bet that won't work very well at all, and siggy is going to suit his system far better.

      in conclusion i wouldn't touch vdv with a 20 foot pole 😉

I'm very sold on McClean, the amount of point he got in half a season in his debut season was amazing.
