Tony Pulis added another wide man to Stoke City’s ranks earlier this week after snapping up Michael Kightly for a fee believed to be in the region of £2m. The 26-year-old arrives at the Britannia on a long-term deal from neighbours Wolves and is expected to push for a starting role in the upcoming campaign:

Having tasted relegation with the Molineux outfit only a matter of months ago, Kightly was clearly a relieved man to be given another bite of the Premier League cherry. Speaking to the Potters’ official website upon completion of the move, he enthused:

It’s a great club; an established Premier League club, so I am delighted to be here. Any footballer wants to play at the highest level and I am grateful to Stoke for giving me the chance to stay in the Premier League. The Club sold itself to me. What they have achieved over the past few years has been remarkable. Then there’s the excellent facilities and, of course, the supporters. So, it’s definitely a Club that is moving in the right direction.

The Statistics

Kightly began his career in the Tottenham youth ranks but returned to hometown club Basildon United after being released by the London outfit. Having scored 11 goals in 18 matches, he caught the eye of Southend United and was handed a two-year deal in 2003 but struggled to make any sort of impact. Over 13 games, the winger failed to find the net and was farmed out to Farnborough Town but his temporary spell was largely underwhelming; no goals in 11 games saw him return to Southend, where he was released by then-boss Steve Tilson.

Greys Athletic then came to the rescue ahead of the 2005-06 campaign. Over his season-and-a-half at the club, Kightly finally began to produce the goods; 52 games harvested 24 goals and earned a loan move to Wolves where, after notching twice in his first five matches, he signed a permanent deal. The winger’s first three seasons at Molineux hinted at huge potential; he returned 20 goals and 30 assists over 80 appearances, with the 2008/09 campaign alone producing eight goals and 19 assists, but since then, his game time has been dramatically reduced by injury. Ankle and metatarsal problems have limited Kightly to just 31 games for Wolves in the past three seasons, where he returned four goals and a couple of assists. A four-month loan spell at Watford midway through last term saw him find the net three times in 12 games before returning to the midlands club in January 2012.

The Prospects

With a mere 36 goals to their name last season, the Potters were the lowest scorers in the Premier League and Pulis revealed Kightly’s acquisition was a major factor in addressing this statistic. Attacking threat from the flanks was somewhat diminished in 2011/12 – Matthew Etherington scored three times while Jermaine Pennant failed to find the net at all, a factor their manager acknowledged:

There is nothing better than to have strong competition in all areas of the squad and Michael’s arrival will give us that in the wide positions. I’ve long been an admirer of Michael, not only in terms of him being a provider, but also the fact that he gets his share of goals. Our two wingers, Matthew Etherington and Jermaine Pennant, have been brilliant over the past few years, but they went off the boil in terms of goalscoring last season, so we wanted to address that. Competition for places will bring the best out of them again and that is what Michael’s presence will give us in that area.

With Etherington likely to continue in the left flank role, Pennant looks the most at risk here. The latter made just 18 starts for Stoke last season, with Jon Walters and Ryan Shotton both handed game time on the right of midfield. Walters now seems likely to continue solely up front rather than drop back onto the wing on occasion, boosting his potential as an out-of-position prospect in Fantasy Premier League (FPL).

While he has yet to be added to the Sky Sports game Kightly has been handed a 5.5 price tag by FPL – the same as Pennant and 1.0 less than Etherington – and, if he can nail down a regular role, his delivery from out wide will be a valuable asset to the likes of Peter Crouch up top and could, potentially, propel the former Wolves man as a viable mid-price asset for our consideration.

The Potters’ opening schedule is likely to see Fantasy managers approach the Stoke squad with plenty trepidation, however. With showdowns against Arsenal, City, Chelsea, Liverpool and United in the first eight Gameweeks, Pulis’ men could hardly ask for a trickier start and, while some may feel trips to Reading and Wigan could prove prosperous, it’s worth remembering the Stoke picked up a dire three points in their last nine away matches of 2011/12. Fantasy investment can be expected around the Gameweek 9 mark, however, when the fixture list smiles significantly kinder on Kightly and co.

Oops posted in the wrong place:

    Re: Kightly...

Annoying for Wolves supporters as although he was a real favourite in the championship, he was injured for nearly the entire time we were in the Prem. Back to fitness end of last season and this is how we are repaid. Grrr.
Thats modern football though. We would have had to let him go on a free next summer if we hadn’t cashed in as he wouldn’t sign a new contract.
Will be interesting to see how he does. If he gets starts he can be incredible when on form but he’s very much a form player and quite injury prone these days.

Anybody considering Bannan as a differential 5.0 pick. I know they have Albrighton and N'zog but Bannan captained Villa the other night which must mean something, no? He was also on corners and free kicks (and scored).

He's playing deeper when Aguero is on the field. That's what I'm comparing. He's not the spearhead anymore, he's a playmaker almost.

And? City aren't going to get a penalty every week. Plus, what about the extra 2.5 you have to spend by getting Tevez? The reason i am considering it is becasue i'd only captain Aguero 1 time in 5 GWs and even then, there are other options like Bale/VDV vs Norwich or Rooney vs Southampton.

Yeah, I have no players of 10 or more. No Tevez, or Aguero. No Rooney. No RVP. In fact, my most expensive forward cost me 8.5.

The way I see it, buying big hitting forwards is couched in fear of missing out on captaining them when they score the inevitable hat trick (e.g. Aguero/Tevez vs Southampton).

My philosophy is to forgo those jackpot captain hauls in favour of putting in solid reasonably priced forwards with solid players and one cheapie in each of defence, midfield and attack, and relying more on attack-minded defenders and midfielders to provide me with my jackpot captain hauls. Midfielders get 5 points for every goal, so a midfielder hat trick is better value than one from a forward anyhow. Those hat tricks are not as unlikely as you might think. Cazorla, Mata, Walcott, Dempsey, Chamberlain, Bale, Sessegnon, even 6.5-ers like Pienaar, Michu, Diaby or Larsson are capable of scoring a hat trick. You could even see a hat trick from 5.0-er Miyaichi if he completes his move to Wigan.

With this philosophy, I've been able to include, for example, Vermaelen, Cazorla and Podolski, who are all capable of showering my fantasy team with points.

I seriously think that including all the big swinging dicks is not as obvious as many of the RMTs in this forum suggest. That Aguero Graham Torres (with 2.0 in the bank for Rooney in GW2) front line cliche may just not be the best way, in my humble opinion.

Can't quite bring myself to get him in with those fixtures, but looking at previous fixtures against the bigger clubs Liverpool still always manage to score. Its the bonus and shots of target thing that bugs me, when I know that rooney and Aguero will hover up bonus.

To whomsoever concerned - Just cos someone was really active over the summer doesn’t mean they’re a regular poster. There are people around here, who've been around for ages. They're the real regulars and think how they stay low and keep the floor clean & open for discussions.

It’s getting to a few people’s head around here. And it gets annoying beyond a point. Modesty is a valuable trait and no better place to learn it than on an online forum. Just thought someone had to clear the air 🙂

+2. It's all about the quality of the posts, nothing to do with 'how long' people have been around for.

A 'regular' is someone who posts regularly - and it doesn't mean anything anyway. You'd think people would be glad to have more decent posters and for them to feel a part of the site, clearly I was wrong though.

Gunter has been nursing a foot injury but has now made a full recovery and is likely to play a part in Reading's pre-season friendly against Crystal Palace at Madejski Stadium on Saturday (3pm).

Manager Brian McDermott will field a strong team against the Eagles, with fellow new signings Pavel Pogrebnyak, Danny Guthrie, Nicky Shorey, Garath McCleary and Adrian Mariappa all likely to be involved.

Being a Newcastle fan I'm inclined to say yes..but as we are the most unreliable team in the world I'd say no haha stick with spurs defenders. Yes it's important to consider the home advantage the mags have but Spurs always seem to unwrap us..5-0 last time we met..albeit that was at White Hart Lane and with Adebayor

yes, but one which I did not start, at least not the first time around.

There is always Clichy to factor in when owning Kolarov. So having 4 good defenders to cover him is a must if one is going to own him.

at the end of the day though, no one has a gun to their head, and some people have been very up front about their reasons for having him, and the risks that come with it. It's no different to people coming on here to complain that were advised to bench so and so and then he got 20 points or whatever.

Actually pretty good. Frei and Dyer are my only concerns, especially as you already have Swansea attacking cover and Frei may not even start. Like the rest though and tbh there's not a great deal of choice in the 5-5.5m mid category.

Defence lacking 1 more top figure in my opinion if you're opting for a 343 formation, midfield solid although as has been mentioned numerous times with Hazard he is untested in the tough Premier League stage and with Di Matteo having so many options in midfield will his game time be limited? Have to include Aguero or Rooney which you have up tops but Bent let my side down last year so could be a gamble maybe take him out or pray he hits form. On plus side for Bent he's guaranteed minutes on the field and penalties. Maybe include another Man U player and a more prolific striker.

    Green, Friedal,

    Mariappa, Cole, Zabaleta, Koscielny, Fabio

Noble, Gervinho, Mata, Bale, Yaya T,

    Defoe, Aguero, Pogrebnyak

The doubts, Gervinho- As an Arsenal fan, I think he is going to start the season and because listed as a mid could provide big returns in what promises to be an exciting season for the Gunners.

Defoe-- Injury clear and ready to start the season explosively,

Zabaleta- finished the season as a regular and gets forward.
Toure- not very flash but provides huge consistency and one of Man City's main men

    Any thoughts on this side.
Trying to get that blend of certain big point haulers and a few surprise, exciting choices..

Nobody seems particularly bothered by his move, probably because he'll play in the same role as for Swansea which was to play little passes around midfield and let the players further forward score and assist.

I'd be worried that Demps han't had a preseason and Fulham are usually sluggish starters. If Van P stays, cue a whole new raft of RMT's and a fundamental shift in the generic XV.

Couple of questions re Man Utd, perhaps there are some well informed supporters that can help; Rafael to start the season? Valencia of Nani to have biggest impact? Kagawa worth the risk? Thanks!

Rafael looks nailed on now that Jones is injured, looks like a wait and see job on Kagawa according to most, i tend to agree.

Rafael unlikely to start GW1 but after that who knows?

Valencia is the safer option IMO but Nani can be more explosive, no idea if he will start though.

Kagawa could prove to be a good FPL player but once again nobody is really sure if he will start or not so Valencia remains the safest option in that MF.

Thank you, I was leaning towards Valencia, now I've toppled. Strange that no one is even mentioning A Young. Worth considering as a fourth way?

Not nailed on. Both have potential to be great and not for me at the moment.

On Rafa, maybe, the Olympics finishes this week, it all depends on his tiredness upon his return and Jones' fitness as atm Valencia has been playing rb which is not ideal, so 50/50 IMO.

Valencia will be more consistent, Nani will score more points overall, but you'll need to own him at the right time.

Some people would say yes. It's a no from me atm. I'm happy we have him, but we don't know how long it will take him to get up to speed in the PL, nor what role he will play, especially if RvP signs.

Is Dyer worth a punt at 5.5m? If not, who is the best 5.5m midfielder?

I like Stephen Ireland at 5.5m - new lease of life under an attacking manager... I think he's worth a go for the first few weeks

I'm doubling up with Dyer and Michu until I hear anything more about Routledge that would threaten his place. If so I might swap Dyer for Ireland
