Having rolled out the Scout Picks on Friday evening, we now turn our attentions to the first Differential article of the new campaign. If you’re new to this, the idea is to highlight certain Fantasy assets with low ownership – typically under 5% – ahead of each Gameweek and wax lyrical over their chances for the fixture ahead. This term we’re concentrating on just one player per Gameweek and, to get the ball rolling, we’ve opted for a proven Premier League goalscorer…

Let’s be honest – last season was a bit of a write-off for Darren Bent. The Villa forward arrived on the back of 41 goals over his previous couple of campaigns but the installation of Alex McLeish to the Villa Park hotseat put paid to the forward’s Fantasy potential, as the midlands outfit attempted to grind out results under the former Birmingham boss. As a result, Villa returned a meagre 37 goals over 2011/12, the second lowest tally in the league and only one more than Stoke; starved of service up top, Bent managed just nine goals before his season was ended in early March due to an ankle injury.

With McLeish now nothing more than a bad memory, Villa fans approach the new season with far greater enthusiasm. New boss Paul Lambert has handed his players a license to attack as he looks to replicate the offensive threat of former club Norwich; the Canaries racked up 52 goals upon their top-flight return under the Scot, a goal haul bettered only by the top six last time round. Already, Bent has been singing the praises of the new man in charge, with a change in tactics set to alter how we assess Villa’s Fantasy prospects for the season ahead:

“He wants us to be really dangerous and create loads of chances. He wants us to be an attacking outfit. He has a philosophy where he says: ‘If we’re going to lose, we’re going to lose having a go’. He wants us to have a right good go at every single team. That’s how it should be. We have attacking players in the team who can cause real damage and he’s told them to go out and do their stuff. It’s certainly going to be a dream for me playing that way as a striker.”

Villa roll up to West Ham for their Upton Park opener on the back of decent pre-season form. Lambert’s side have racked up eight goals in their final four fixtures and Bent signed off on summer duties with a smartly-taken brace against Bundesliga outfit Werder Bremen – aided by the creativity of Charles N’Zogbia, Brett Holman and Stephen Ireland, he could well be set to spoil Big Sam’s party tomorrow afternoon.

Bearing in mind the Hammers managed just seven clean sheets at home in the Championship last season, Lambert’s men will be anticipating goals. With spot-kick duties in his locker, an ownership currently under 3% and a strong set of fixtures to follow, Bent looks the man most likely to produce as the Villains seek to exorcise the ghost of McLeish with a new-found sense of optimism.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

So I've been trawling through various WHU forums and it seems most hammers reckon McCartney is a lock for the LB role, with Demel and O'Brien fighting it out for RB. Both Demel and O'Brien seem to get a lot of abuse for not being good enough for the premiership. That said, I've seen a lot of predicted line-ups with Demel at RB and O'Brien at LB (including on here). Aghh. It's ridiculous the amount of time I'm spending on my 5th choice defender! Can anyone clear this up for me!!?

          Haha right

If you have 9.0 to spend i would go Nasri - good differential and with Silva possibly out should feature strongly.

Between the 2 though - yaya just on fixture and form over preseason.

I wud give it to Torres no matter what kind of form he is in just for the fact that lamps is not gonna be anywhere near the pen box to have that much of an influence on goals so you'll just have to depend on his pens if he gets one.

i have 2.5m in bank now, should I spend it all, or squeeze .5m more to do rvp transfer??

    my team:

    DDG Fed
    Ceullar Saylor Demel A.Cole Zabeleta
    Bale Lampard Pineear Nzog Guthrie
    Tevez Torres Graham

i am quite happy with my team, finding hard to squeeze .5m/usse that 2.5m though

Woke early, must be pre-season nerves.
Last decision to make, 5.0 Def (already got Tomkins and Clyne below 5.0):-
    A) S Taylor NEW or
    B) A Williams SW
    C) Clark AV
    D) Hangerland FUL

Thanks and good luck to all

Clark looks set to partner Vlaar at the back for Villa. He's a rising star and offers a goal threat. Villa will leak goals this season but hopefully score a few. I've gone Williams, SW captain will play unless he has a broken leg

Down to the minor tweaking now - reckon it's worth saving a further 0.5m by doing Hangelaand -> Hughes? He seems to be firmly above Senderos in the pecking order these days.

It would also mean that Torres & Ivanovic -> RVP & a 4.0m defender is definitely possible in GW3.

    De Gea, Federici
    Ivanovic, Zabaleta, Hangelaand, Cuellar, McCartney
    Mata, Bale, VDV, Dyer, Guthrie
    Torres, Tevez, Graham
    Bank 0.5m

Nice team Jins, I'd keep it as it is right now. I have a very similar team to you but do you think it's spending the 2.0 that I have for Torres to maybe Rooney in GW2 or should I keep it?

I decided to just spend it and accept that I'll have no MUN attacking coverage in GW2. Knowing my luck, one of my other big players will get injured and I'll have to use my freebie to sort that out anyway. That being said, if RVP or Rooney look like absolute must have's then I'm prepared to take a hit to get them in and captain them.

I also think that there will be little difference between Rooney and RVP this season, so I don't believe RVP is worth the extra 1m.

Arsenal have 4 shocking fixtures in the first 6 and Santi may take a bit of time to settle. VDV has much better fixtures, is on pens, plays OOP and is probably the most direct attacking midfielder in the game. His hamstrings are as dodgy as they come though!

RVP vs Rooney is close, but I have a feeling RVP will be the more advanced and be handed pens.

Greetings everyone, Wanted to wish everyone good luck this year with their team and respected leagues.

Looking for some feedback with my team, any thoughts ?

    Vorm

    Hangeland Cole. A Shawcross

    Kagawa Ramires Carzola Bale

    Tevez Torres Graham

    Jaaskelainen
    Guthrie
    McCartney
    Barnett
    2.0 in bank

Not sure about Shawcross or even Kagawa now that RVP has signed with Man U
