Having rolled out the Scout Picks on Friday evening, we now turn our attentions to the first Differential article of the new campaign. If you’re new to this, the idea is to highlight certain Fantasy assets with low ownership – typically under 5% – ahead of each Gameweek and wax lyrical over their chances for the fixture ahead. This term we’re concentrating on just one player per Gameweek and, to get the ball rolling, we’ve opted for a proven Premier League goalscorer…

Let’s be honest – last season was a bit of a write-off for Darren Bent. The Villa forward arrived on the back of 41 goals over his previous couple of campaigns but the installation of Alex McLeish to the Villa Park hotseat put paid to the forward’s Fantasy potential, as the midlands outfit attempted to grind out results under the former Birmingham boss. As a result, Villa returned a meagre 37 goals over 2011/12, the second lowest tally in the league and only one more than Stoke; starved of service up top, Bent managed just nine goals before his season was ended in early March due to an ankle injury.

With McLeish now nothing more than a bad memory, Villa fans approach the new season with far greater enthusiasm. New boss Paul Lambert has handed his players a license to attack as he looks to replicate the offensive threat of former club Norwich; the Canaries racked up 52 goals upon their top-flight return under the Scot, a goal haul bettered only by the top six last time round. Already, Bent has been singing the praises of the new man in charge, with a change in tactics set to alter how we assess Villa’s Fantasy prospects for the season ahead:

“He wants us to be really dangerous and create loads of chances. He wants us to be an attacking outfit. He has a philosophy where he says: ‘If we’re going to lose, we’re going to lose having a go’. He wants us to have a right good go at every single team. That’s how it should be. We have attacking players in the team who can cause real damage and he’s told them to go out and do their stuff. It’s certainly going to be a dream for me playing that way as a striker.”

Villa roll up to West Ham for their Upton Park opener on the back of decent pre-season form. Lambert’s side have racked up eight goals in their final four fixtures and Bent signed off on summer duties with a smartly-taken brace against Bundesliga outfit Werder Bremen – aided by the creativity of Charles N’Zogbia, Brett Holman and Stephen Ireland, he could well be set to spoil Big Sam’s party tomorrow afternoon.

Bearing in mind the Hammers managed just seven clean sheets at home in the Championship last season, Lambert’s men will be anticipating goals. With spot-kick duties in his locker, an ownership currently under 3% and a strong set of fixtures to follow, Bent looks the man most likely to produce as the Villains seek to exorcise the ghost of McLeish with a new-found sense of optimism.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

        🙂 Having trouble picking your team? I guarantee, if you have read most articles on here and based your team around some of the regular's RMTs then it will be fine. The real skill is getting on the form players early and spotting the bargains quickly.

      yeah i'm starting to get worried a bit about old yaya now, but as always, beyond Bale, I'm finding it really hard to pick a bunch of midfielders i definitely want to go with who i know are naiuled-on and will score points. so i guess i'm gonna just stick with yaya!

      He will always play a slightly more defensive role because of his strong defensive capabilities. He does get forward still though and can score goals.

      Tough. I don't think Lescott's as nailed on as everyone seems to think, but I don't think there's a 4 mill defender really worth having.

      Bennett, if you can only play him vs reasonable opposition. Norwich have to be better defensively than last season.

    If any one's awake would much appreciate your thoughts on this lot.

    DDG Cerny

    Ivanovic Demel Shawcross Kompany Caulker

    Pienaar Allen Kagawa Michu Britton

    Aguero Tevez Torres

    Is it better to go with two mid priced Keepers?
    Is my midfield too weak?
    Any other thoughts most welcome.

      consider dropping shawcross cuz he's got horrible fixtures.
      maybe change britton since its unlikely he might get that many goals?
      perhaps to snodgrass?
      and caulker may not be a nailed on starter though since there's verto, kaboul, gallas, dawson already fighting for spots there

      Wakka, get a £4.5m keeper as insurance for when DDG gets 'rested'.

      Agree with getting rid of Shawx and Caulker. Williams and Cuellar will do the job for you there and save you the extra £0.5m to upgrade Cerny.

      Your MF could surprise a few people and do reasonably well, but I'd choose between Tevez or Aguero and then get a £6-6.5m striker in there and see if you can get Bale.

        Just will give up Chelsea players for GW3.
        Tevez could be a good shout. I am still more comfortable with Aguero as I plan to consistently captain the City striker when they play at Etihad and Tevez probably gets less minutes than Aguero.
        I think my defense is quite ok. Plan to field two "big hitters" every week, and one of the three more or less nailed on cheapies.

    Last Post, I've got to find a way to get another 1.0m out of my team for RVP.

    DDG – Federici
    Lescott – Saylor – Hangeland – Demel – Barnett
    Nasri – Hazard – N’Zogbia – Maloney – Guthrie
    Aguero – Torres – Graham

    3.5m spare
    For:
    Nasri -> Silva
    Torres -> Rooney
    Hazard -> Bale

    However Im keen on getting RVP instead of rooney which would be the best way to draw out an addition 1m from my team with the lowest possible damage.

    Should I:
    A) Downgrade Federici to Cerny and Lescott to Zaba
    B) Downgrade Saylor to a 4.0 and have three rotating cbs
    C) Other
