Michael Laudrup continued his restructuring of the Swansea first-team squad late last week by snapping up Ki Sung-Yueng from Glasgow Celtic on a three-year contract. The South Korean arrives for a club record undisclosed fee and, having been granted international clearance, made his debut for the in-form Welsh club in this evening’s Carling Cup match with Barnsley:

Ki is the fourth signing of the summer, following Jonathan De Guzman, Chico and Michu to the club as Laudrup quickly puts his own stamp on the Liberty Stadium outfit. With money to spend, Swansea chairman Huw Jenkins took time out to explain the arrival of the highly-rated 23 year old:

Having lost Joe Allen recently, it was vital that we invested the money wisely by bringing quality young footballers into the club with potential to grow further. Ki fulfils that criteria and everyone in the football club is excited about the prospect of him playing and developing with us. His tactical awareness and quality has been there for everyone to see, especially playing for his country, and he is well suited to our style of football.

The Statistics

The 6 foot 2 central midfielder’s career began in his native country with FC Seoul in the 2007-08 campaign. Over three seasons at the club, he made 64 appearances and scored seven times, with the highlight proving to be a runners-up spot in the J-League in 2008. Ki made his way to Celtic midway through the 2009-10 campaign, with the Glasgow giants beating off interest from the likes PSV and Porto to acquire his services for £2.1m.

Ki’s first half-season at Parkhead was clearly a bedding-in exercise as he adapted to the more physical Scottish Premier League – he managed a couple of assists over his 10 league appearances for Neil Lennon’s side but the following term he established himself as a key member of the Hoops’ first-team. Three goals and four assists in the 2010-11 season was comfortably exceeded last time round as Ki produced six goals and six assists to help Celtic clinch the Premier League title and earn himself the South Korean Footballer of the Year for 2011 award. The Swansea new boy has already featured for his country on 47 occasions, finding the net five times.

The Prospects

Known as the “Korean Steven Gerrard”, Ki has plenty of quality attributes in his locker. His strong work ethic in the centre of the park, allied with superb distribution from deep and long range shooting, looks the perfect fit for Laudrup’s burgeoning side.

While the new man in charge has altered the roles of the two Swansea wide men to devastating effect so far, the 4-3-3 formation is sure to be maintained – bearing in mind that Ki is the club’s record buy, you’d expect him to be earmarked for a regular role under Laudrup. With Michu firmly established as the advanced central midfielder in support of Danny Graham, it’s likely that Ki will take over from either Jonathan De Guzman or Leon Britton as one of the two deep-lying Swans midfielders. De Guzman’s versatility means he could be shifted to the wing – with Scott Sinclair on the verge of leaving, the Dutchman could vie with Wayne Routledge for the left flank berth. Alternatively, De Guzman could remain in a more defensive role, with Britton making way for the South Korean instead.

Yet to be added to the Fantasy games, Ki’s defensive midfield role is likely to earn him a mid-price valuation across the board. FPL-wise, a price of around 5.5 seems the likeliest scenario; while his set-piece capabilities also boost to his appeal, it’s unlikely Ki will find a way in many Fantasy teams at the moment, with Michu and Nathan Dyer the obvious targets in Laudrup’s free-scoring midfield.

With Swansea afforded four home fixtures (SUN, EVE, RDG, WIG) in the next six Gameweeks, however, Ki will be afforded plenty opportunity to impress – in the current Fantasy climate, all it may take is a trademark 30-yarder from the South Korean for another Liberty bandwagon to start rolling.

I've been undercover for the last few days on a secret mission. I have successfully mascaraed-ed as a coach driver using a false driving liscence, false mustache and a false French accent.

I have now been appointed as the official Belgium team-bus driver to bring them from their hotel to the stadium for the match against Wales.

The next step in my cunning plan is to hit the brakes a little too hard on the motorway after an imaginary cat runs out in front of me. Don't get me wrong I don't wish ill upon any of that wonderful squad but a minor whiplash injury for Hazard, Mignolet, Vertonghen, Vermaelen, Fellaini, Dembele and Lukaku means they will all miss two GWs.

Kompany will not be on the coach, partly because I just signed him this week and partly because he will be bound and gagged in his room back at the hotel.

    Vorm/Krul Bego

    Baines,Zab, Hughes Demel Cuellar

    Michu, Bale, Pienaar, Kaca, Kagawa

    RVP, Graham, Tevez

0.5m in bank for Bale to Hazard GW4.

Also just a question, Do you get a weekly price for the highest scorer each week???

Liking that team, not too dissimilar to my own apart from the defence. Wouldn't go for Demel personally, not rating West Ham this year at all. Also, no need to get rid of Bale as they have easy fixtures coming up and he'll find form soon I'm sure. Dembele coming in can only help the team too.

I honestly don't think so. I played my WC early last season and you can look at my stats, awful season for me, only managed to scrape it back towards the end. The issue is, once you use it there may be more pressing issues later on. What if we get snow again? What if certain teams take a few weeks longer to settle in (I reckon Arsenal and Sunderland) but then become very strong prospects? I intend on keeping mine, possibly until after the Jan WC.

Not my rank I clawed it back but the last 8-9 weeks involved me jumping about 15,000 every week to get there. At one point early on I was something like 1,100,000 or so even after using the WC. Second half of the season was much better.

I'm very tempted to go for Bertrand in for Cole. I just have a feeling as soon as I do Bertrand will be benched and I'll be scratching about looking for a regular in the 4.5 bracket.
Does anyone here know if he is assured a starting role for the near future?

Imo, it doesn't matter when you WC as long as you benefit from it. I'm WCing now and I've made about 0.4m from selling players that I won't keep plus getting in players that have a decent run of fixtures in the next 5-8 GWs. If I was wildcarding in GW 15 or so, my plan would be the same as the one I'm using now. I don't see the difference as long as you get the best benefit from it. The best thing about wildcarding now is that most of the regulars are still playing and knee jerking a lot. That won't be happening as the season progresses. You won't see 3-4 double/triple rises in a GW like we're seeing now.

In a way though, ignoring the obvious Team value benefits, this could be a disastrous time retrospectively to wildcard, I don't hope that is the case with yourself but with so much 'hype' about must have players, not playing it and assessing things gradually could be a perfectly advantageous approach. Of course there is the case where you've done awfully so far and actually NEED to do it, which makes sense. But otherwise, not necessarily a thing you should rush to do for the sake of value. Especially seeing as most people will have the same team as you right now.

Not saying it's a disastrous time, just it might work out that half the players you get in get injured and you reach a point where you need to WC but can't.

I've got very little interest in price rises tbh. Seems like this year it is a massive motivation for people to use their WC. For example, if I want Hazard then I will sell Podolski and Bale (if he doesn't perform) and bring in Ba and Hazard with my 2 FTs. I think the issue with WCing so early is that teams sometimes don't establish their "season form" as I like to call it, until later on, a few weeks from now.

that's obviously the other side of the argument! It really depends on how you feel about it, I have team that has done well both weeks so far so I'm happy with using free transfers right now to keep it ticking over consistently but I can understand someone whose team is a mess wanting to WC.

You can't base form on one or two gameweek, Wolves were lingering around the Champions League spots after a few games, and look how that panned out.

Wait for this seasons bargain teams to(Newcastle and Swansea last year) before wildcarding.

RE: Parmtree, about possible improvements, here's a suggestion: Make the recent comments box a pop out box that reloads itself automatically every 30 seconds, and when you make a comment, any reply you get will be alerted by some sort of pop up symbol that maybe makes a noise (this would be an added novelty) So what I mean in conclusion, something akin to facebook when you get a comment, a little red 1 pops up for your reply so you know someone has answered you.

You;'re not serious are you? He flatters to deceive as an FPL prospect, don't go near him. He'll rarely score goals or get assists, especially now he's been converted to a deeper CM. Will link midfield and attacking, dribble alot, make tackles but acquiring FPL points is not his forte.

Am I the only one that thinks Kompany will do better than Baines in the next, say, 7-10 GWs?
I think people have got carried away with Everton's start and I don't think that their fixtures are THAT much better than Man City's (despite what the ticker says), considering the the quality of both teams defences.
I know Baines stats have been mighty impressive so far, but it's only 2 GWs in and I think Mancini will have seen the error of his ways with the 3 at the back thingy and revert to type.

I've doubled up on Zabaleta and Kompany. May the fantasy Gods be with me.

I posted something similar about my doubts on Baines/Everton earlier, even comparing their prospects with much cheaper options rather than Kompany etc.

Despite what the Fixtures article today says, I don't see Everton's fixtures as good at all, they have 2 tough away games and the Toon at home in the next 3, against 3 sides that have also started pretty well (us less so than WBA and the Swans).

I'm keeping Zabaleta and not going near Baines, at least until GW6 and even then I'll probs go for a cheaper alternative.

I know they've started well but I don't think they'll keep any CS's in the next 3, and can't see them scoring more than 1-2 in any of them. Don't think they'll beat WBA or Swansea away and think we've got a chance of getting something at Goodison.

+1 he's a fun player to have cos there's alwas a chance of a 6 point goal or 3 point assist which you don't normally expect from defenders. Clean sheets are a bonus rather than a necessity.

He missed 7 PL games last season, roughly calculating that's 2x6 + 5x2 =22 and that doesn't take bonus/goals into consideration.

Not saying Hart's a bad option though, personally I'm sticking with Zabaleta for now.

Baines over Kompany for me. Baines will definitely outscore Kompany and he's cheaper. He'll get a minimum of 10-15 clean sheets plus goals and assists. If he can replicate the assist total of 2010/11 season then he's going to get a monster score

Out of them lot, my slightly biased view would be Ben Arfa.

Villa look pretty awful and he's been very threatening so far against a couple of top sides, think he'll destroy some of the lesser sides this season and this could be one of them.

Do you not have Tevez? Or RVP?

I do have Tevez, I'm just looking for opinions on who would be the best to captain out of them, I don't feel confident captaining any of them over Tevez but it could be a huge differential if Tevez fails

True, although he's become a lot more consistent over last season and has started brilliantly this year. Every time he's got the ball, he looks as if he could create something.

Pardew's had him working hard on his defensive responsibilities and at the end of last season he rarely had a bad game.

Nani on the other hand seems as inconsistent as ever, still a top player on his day mind.

Went kagawa last week, so very close to being a huge return (hit the post for what would have been his 2nd goal and at least 2 BAPs). Have got RVP in now and thinking he is the choice this week as everyone will be on Tevez who was lucky last week to say the least.

Ignore that, it seems to be linked.

I'm debating taking a hit for Pog to Petric or Graham this week. I was leaning towards Petric but I reckon Dembele will be a big loss to them. What do you guys think? Also got Michu, so unsure about having 2 attacking Swans, so any other suggestions?

Pog to Graham, ride Swansea's form and fixtures until they dry up.

Dembele's departure has more of an impact on the Fulham defence than attack imo. Kaca looks more assured of game time with this move as well.

True, but you need someone to win the ball and link up play for the strikers to score! Not seen enough of Kaca to rate him but all in all Graham looks the safer bet even with Michu.

It really is tough choice for those who have both.

Tevez - at home, scoring goals (albeit was very lucky to come away with anything last week) and playing in a high scoring team versus a defence that looks leaky to say the least.

RVP - playing away, just opened his account, playing in a team adjusting to him, developing a partnership with Kagawa versus an opponent who appear not to sit back if the Man City game is good evidence. Has a history of goal scoring exploits on the road over previous seasons.
