Michael Laudrup continued his restructuring of the Swansea first-team squad late last week by snapping up Ki Sung-Yueng from Glasgow Celtic on a three-year contract. The South Korean arrives for a club record undisclosed fee and, having been granted international clearance, made his debut for the in-form Welsh club in this evening’s Carling Cup match with Barnsley:

Ki is the fourth signing of the summer, following Jonathan De Guzman, Chico and Michu to the club as Laudrup quickly puts his own stamp on the Liberty Stadium outfit. With money to spend, Swansea chairman Huw Jenkins took time out to explain the arrival of the highly-rated 23 year old:

Having lost Joe Allen recently, it was vital that we invested the money wisely by bringing quality young footballers into the club with potential to grow further. Ki fulfils that criteria and everyone in the football club is excited about the prospect of him playing and developing with us. His tactical awareness and quality has been there for everyone to see, especially playing for his country, and he is well suited to our style of football.

The Statistics

The 6 foot 2 central midfielder’s career began in his native country with FC Seoul in the 2007-08 campaign. Over three seasons at the club, he made 64 appearances and scored seven times, with the highlight proving to be a runners-up spot in the J-League in 2008. Ki made his way to Celtic midway through the 2009-10 campaign, with the Glasgow giants beating off interest from the likes PSV and Porto to acquire his services for £2.1m.

Ki’s first half-season at Parkhead was clearly a bedding-in exercise as he adapted to the more physical Scottish Premier League – he managed a couple of assists over his 10 league appearances for Neil Lennon’s side but the following term he established himself as a key member of the Hoops’ first-team. Three goals and four assists in the 2010-11 season was comfortably exceeded last time round as Ki produced six goals and six assists to help Celtic clinch the Premier League title and earn himself the South Korean Footballer of the Year for 2011 award. The Swansea new boy has already featured for his country on 47 occasions, finding the net five times.

The Prospects

Known as the “Korean Steven Gerrard”, Ki has plenty of quality attributes in his locker. His strong work ethic in the centre of the park, allied with superb distribution from deep and long range shooting, looks the perfect fit for Laudrup’s burgeoning side.

While the new man in charge has altered the roles of the two Swansea wide men to devastating effect so far, the 4-3-3 formation is sure to be maintained – bearing in mind that Ki is the club’s record buy, you’d expect him to be earmarked for a regular role under Laudrup. With Michu firmly established as the advanced central midfielder in support of Danny Graham, it’s likely that Ki will take over from either Jonathan De Guzman or Leon Britton as one of the two deep-lying Swans midfielders. De Guzman’s versatility means he could be shifted to the wing – with Scott Sinclair on the verge of leaving, the Dutchman could vie with Wayne Routledge for the left flank berth. Alternatively, De Guzman could remain in a more defensive role, with Britton making way for the South Korean instead.

Yet to be added to the Fantasy games, Ki’s defensive midfield role is likely to earn him a mid-price valuation across the board. FPL-wise, a price of around 5.5 seems the likeliest scenario; while his set-piece capabilities also boost to his appeal, it’s unlikely Ki will find a way in many Fantasy teams at the moment, with Michu and Nathan Dyer the obvious targets in Laudrup’s free-scoring midfield.

With Swansea afforded four home fixtures (SUN, EVE, RDG, WIG) in the next six Gameweeks, however, Ki will be afforded plenty opportunity to impress – in the current Fantasy climate, all it may take is a trademark 30-yarder from the South Korean for another Liberty bandwagon to start rolling.

Same predicament, I don't know what to do. I thought he was on free kicks, corners and possibly pens that's why I got him. I have no spare cash atm as I got RVP for Rooney. Only reasonable swap I can see is Pienaar or Morrison. I have also missed the Michu wagon 🙁 . Not convinced of Pienaar's consistency. I have decided to keep, he has effectively had 1 game vs arsenal away need to stay patient.

Looking increasingly likely that Walcott may not be at Arsenal in 2 days time. £75,000 5 year contract rejected. Reckon once again it's come down to a combination of money and trophies.

While I back Wenger above any player who wants to leave the club (this promise has completely survived RVP) I do wish he'd at least see if they'd take somewhat higher wages. It saves money on bringing in new players and we might actually get enough good players in one place for long enough to win some bloody stuff.

But knowing Wenger if he gets the Walcott->Dzeko+cash swap deal working, He might take it..We have only 1 quality CF atm and 3-4 wingers

Don't rate him and never have. Who would he go to that would be willing to spend that kind of money? He wouldn't get a sniff at the 2 Mancs or Chelsea and there's no way Arsenal would sell to Spurs. Liverpool?! Money maybe but trophies... 😀

Plain and simple, in these times, spend money and win trophies... Even Man United paid 24m for a 29 year old injury prone one good season RVP going against all their previous policies... Man City winning the title last season scared them... But Arsenal will do no such thing, they will conduct Football as a business. A business in which bottom line is most important and not trophies or history... The will increase profits and Arsenal name will go down the drain... I recently read that bookmakers are taking odds that Arsenal will not win anything for a decade and also that with footballers getting younger, in the very near future a footballer will be playing in the Premier League who will say, Arsenal hasn't won anything in his lifetime...

Wenger does his own thing, he runs the club sustainably. Incidentally, he will be proved right and be in a great position IF Financial Fair Play is enforced from 2013-2014 as expected. We'll see.

It's enough for it to apply to only European competitions. If there was any risk of not being able to play in the Champions League then Man City, Barca, Real, whoever would have to comply with acceptable spending. If it was enforced of course.

It's a matter of principle. If you ask him whether he would want to win something by buying it, I think he'll say no. And you know what? After years of complaining about this after the glory years, I think I have finally come around to his way of thinking. He's far-sighted.

Yeah. But I'd say it's not exactly about football being a business - I don't think Arsenal is being run with the primary intention of making a PROFIT. It's actually about returning to the roots of what it is to be a sustainable football club with early youth development, prolonged apprenticeship of players and keeping players for years so they become club legends. Returning to the days of the sort of loyal players like Bould, Adams, Scholes, Giggs, Neville etc. Not using some dodgy sugar daddy's money to suck up all the best players from around the world instantly.

Funnily enough, Barcelona's youth academy La Masia is a perfect example of this kind of sustainable football. Unfortunately they're very greedy too and currently can splash the cash to grab even more talented players from the likes of us. But ultimately if FFP happens, it'll be more of the former and less of the latter.

I honestly think that's the way it should be. have a strong academy and grow players and then buy some players to supplement your squad as opposed to the only buy buy buy nature of city, madrid, psg, etc. wish more teams invested in their youth academy

What's really exciting about La Masia is that they've shown a youth academy isn't a compromise, it's can in fact be the opposite, a unique advantage. It can produce squads that play a kind of football that is almost impossible to reproduce.

exactly. and i think it really benefits them because they have their players playing the same system and style from a very young age. and their players are playing with each other up through the ranks. like messi pique and cesc played on the same team all the way up

As a City fan I have to say a part of me regrets being bought out by the current owners. Yes, we were in debt and of course I'm happy about winning things (something I never dreamed of in my lifetime) but I do miss having young academy players coming through, watching them develop into good players and perhaps even England internationals.

Interesting to hear Tinkerman. I mean yes it's all clear to see, you have an amazing squad, an amazingly tough squad with a very shrewd manager. But that local connection has been lost to some extent. Micah Richards is one of the few players if any I can recall that made it to this team, and even he is very much second fiddle.

I know they're planning a huge new training complex where they hope to replicate La Masia in Manchester. I do hope it succeeds in a way.

I agree with most parts of what you said regarding academy development, etc... But it will surely hurt Arsenal that the young players whom they mad stars are snapped up by big spenders and they have to start the whole process again and wait for another few years before the new players become stars...

While I might have taken Dzeko + cash for Walcott before Giroud arrived, I'm not sure now. They're both aerial players, they need to be supplied as opposed to being creators themselves, and consequently I don't think you can play both Giroud and Dzeko in the same team. Most of all I'd be interested in a striker with very good movement and dribbling to help get our strikers space and service. Hate to say it but if there was a version of Suarez that was not a prick, I'd take it.

    Jussi / Begovic
    Rafael / Zabaleta / Hangeland / Cuellar /Clyne
    Hazard / Kagawa / Bale / Michu / Pienaar

    Worth it? Changes would be...
Friedel and Federici > Jussi and Begovic

In my opinion he should play on the left of the front 3, with only one of the dembas starting in the centre.

I can't see pardew benching one of the dembas though, so I will eventually get round to transferring him out. Unless we get an injury to an attacker in the mean time

this is the point, whether someone SHOULD play, and whether that actually do are 2 different things. I've heard Pardew say Marv could be an important player this season, but surely not important enough to start?

At the moment he is first choice attacking back-up. So will get plenty of time from the bench, and if we get injuries. Sadly, i fear that won't be enough for us guys!!! I just hope he doesn't keep dropping in price!

The figures that give the colour gradings on the ticker. At the moment, they are based on last season, and the 3 promoted teams just use the difficulties of the relegated teams from last year.

Yeah, I thought it might happen last night.

I'm still undecided about Petric/Ba/Graham. Another of agony it seems. I kind of decided I'm giving Ba a miss and would go for one of Petric/GRaham and then get Ba/Cisse in around gw 9 for WBA/lpool/WEST/SWANS/south/stoke/WIGAN.

Graham scored 2 in cup, fixtures look to par. Give him a go I'd say. Also Moussa to Spurs looks like almost completed, wouldn't think Petric will get much service(also Ruiz injured)

Hhmm...no I'm even more confused. I have had Graham and put in Petric for the price rise.

I fancy ful fixtures, but Westham could possible put up resistance at home after their 0-3 loss and i don't trust ful to have hughes/kac/petric!

Maybe Graham+kac is a safer bet. Graham is nailed on and should get lots of gametime and I agree with laudrup that he could easily get to 20 goals this season
