After a summer-long chase, Sunderland finally secured the signature of Steven Fletcher from relegated Wolves last week. The 25-year joins up at the Stadium of Light on a four-year contract for an undisclosed fee and will afford the Wearsiders a much-needed attacking threat after some poor recent showings:

With Nicklas Bendtner returning to parent club Arsenal, Martin O’Neill has been desperately scouring the market for a striker. The Black Cats failed to score in four of their six pre-season fixtures and, having opened the season with a goalless draw at Arsenal, the Sunderland boss pushed through the transfer ahead of last week’s subsequently postponed match with Reading. A clearly delighted O’Neill paid tribute to his new forward and revealed he has high expectations for the season ahead:

“I think Steven will be terrific. I think he’s underrated – not by me – and is an exceptionally talented player who will help us enormously. He’s capable of scoring goals and has proved that. He’s also capable of linking play, which is very important to us. I’m hoping that now, at 25 years of age, [Steven] has got plenty of room to improve and really make his game even better. I think he’s capable of doing all that. He is a very good player and is improving, too.”

The Statistics

Fletcher’s career began in Scotland with Hibernian back in 2003-04. The 6 foot 1 inch forward stayed with the Easter Road outfit for six seasons, grabbing 43 goals from a total of 156 league appearances, though his final two campaigns with the Edinburgh outfit were by far the most productive. Handed the role as the club’s main forward, he produced double figure goal hauls in 2007-08 (winning the Scottish Football Writers’ Young Player of the Year Award) and 2008-09, with the likes of Real Madrid and Man City both rumoured to be interested in acquiring his services.

Ultimately, his next destination was Burnley, where Fletcher teamed up with fellow-Scot Owen Coyle. His lone season for the Turf Moor club harvested eight goals and four assists but, while Fletcher’s contribution wasn’t enough to save his side from the drop, it earned him a move to Molineux in time for the 2010/11 campaign. Fletcher demonstrated an eye for goal by notching double figures in each of his two terms at Molineux – in total, he produced 22 goals and six assists in 60 league matches before making his way to Sunderland. He has also represented Scotland at every level from Under 20 upwards and scored a single goal in eight appearances for the national side.

The Prospects

Barring injury, Fletcher looks nailed-on for Sunderland and seems the perfect capture for the Black Cats’ style of play. Likely to lead the line with Stephane Sessegnon tucked in behind, his arrival on Wearside certainly doesn’t bode well for the game time of Fraizer Campbell and Connor Wickham, while Louis Saha seems set to play the familiar role of impact sub.

Fletcher’s superb aerial prowess will be fed by the delivery of James McClean and Adam Johnson from out wide, with Seb Larsson’s set-piece ability also sure to prove valuable for Sunderland’s new penalty box predator. All three midfielders could well be anticipating an upturn in assists if Fletcher can bring his Wolves form to Wearside; a scenario that will boost the trio’s mid-price appeal across the Fantasy games.

An FPL price of 7.0 looks reasonable for a proven top-flight goalscorer such as Fletcher, while his valuation of 7.7 in the Sky Sports game also seems relatively budget-friendly – it may well transpire that he is on spot-kicks at the expense of Larsson; a situation we’ll be keeping a keen eye on.

With last week’s home clash against Reading postponed, Fantasy managers will be hoping Sunderland can reschedule in the near future, offering us a double Gameweek for the Black Cats somewhere along the line. For now, though, the short-term fixtures are a mixed bag – a weekend trip to on-song Swansea is followed by a home clash with Liverpool before tempting games against West Ham and Wigan. If Fletcher can hit the ground running, he could well entice Fantasy managers as a decent mid-price option, with O’Neill relying on the Scot to add an extra attacking thrust and help the Black Cats improve upon last season’s thirteenth place finish.

I don't understand. I've had Michu every GW brought him in preseason at 6.5 but now on the transfer page, below his name is 6.8... I thought the number below the name, always stays the same as that was the amount I bought him for... But 6.8 represents his value at the start of GW2 :/ How have I lost 0.3 of his value???

You get half of the profit when you sell. The number will continue to rise at half the rate of his buying price. So be wary of selling, but be thankful that it didnt cost you 7.1 to buy him.

Who is a good 5.0? Already have S. Taylor, maxed out on Swans and don't want Hangeland because I already have Hughes.

Already have Hazard, the prospect of having both Bale and Hazard is mouthwatering.

Thinking ahead about potential WC if my midfield fire blanks again..

As far as defence is concerned what to go for (Foster + Begovic will be GK pair), 1 biggie or 2 biggie (if you class over 5.5 as a biggie)?

    1 - Ivanovic, rotate Cuellar/STaylor, rotate Williams/Gunter
2 - Ivanovic, Koscielny or Rafeal, rotate Cuellar/STaylor

With 2 the extra 0.5 comes from Guthrie over Noble/Maloney

2 biggie imo but the 'non-biggie options you have put down are pretty solid alternatives. Down to whether you want to go big in the mid/forwards..

With those options I have listed it depends on if I want a 4.5 or 5M mid to bench warm really. If I hit the button after GW3, I would keep my 3 strikers and totally reshape my mid.

With SWA/RDG cant really see myself playing the RDG guy a lot so maybe worth getting a 5.5 biggie

Better, but Cazorla just doesn't do it for me. (Although I have just got rid) midfield looks rather weak - you can take at least a mill out of that defence! e.g. you could have 7m - 6m - 5m - 4.5m - 4m = 26.5m
As apposed to your 28.5m..This frees up 2m already to bulk up that mid.
but having 4 defenders over 5m is crazy.

My lack of Chelsea coverage for next week has me worried too.

If i remember rightly Lescott can play CB/LB and Richards can play CB/RB, so to me a back three of:
      Richards Kompany Lescott
would make the most sense. But like WR said Toure was awful so Lescott should play.

Cheers, and Zabaleta could also play in the back 3 with Richards on the right wing. I think they'll play 4-4-2 for most of their games though.

No problem dude, the other factor is you cannot guess Mancini's lineups, he always bloody rotates. I don't think it's worth the hassle, unless you go for Kompany and stick.

Kompany is a bit dear from my liking. Zabaleta is good value as long as Richards is injured, Lescott at 1 million cheaper than Kompany should be good value as long as he starts most games. I'm goign to try and have a City defender at all times as I think they'll keep the most clean sheets this season.

I agree, over the course of the season they should be near or at the top in clean sheets. I'll see how they do this weekend. If they concede I may drop him and look to bring him back after they get it sorted out.

It's crazy QPR signing another keeper so soon, imo.

It's because Mark Hughes is a (insert offensive word here) He has such a massive ego that he can't bear that his team is underperforming so he sees the transfer window as his only hope, buy as many 'names' as possible and hope that somehow this will not translate into relegation. Then again, maybe Green really is that bad and he knows he's made a mistake, but either way it's very hard to like Hughes imo.

You're dead right on Hughes, the manager.
As a player, I hated, hated, hated him.
Not just because he was Utd...he was such a dirty elbowing so and so. And got away with it too. The refs were the same in the 80s ..they let Utd away with everything, even though they were winning nothing.

Massive egos is totally irrelevant, all the very top managers have them. It is also important to research information prior to making assumptions. Hughes stated a long time ago his aim was to fill each position twice if possible. Also I believe that each time he has managed a club for a full season, they have finished in the top 10.

I'm basing it on information like, he left fulham because the club wasn't 'ambitious' enough for him. This Qpr team suits him at the moment because they're willing to SIGN SIGN SIGN but the team looks such a mess most of the time, a squad full of flashy names, some who are past it. Of course all premiership managers generally have massive egos but his is always on show and so far he's embarassed himself a bit.

You haven't read QPrs transfer policy, They actually have signed 9 players, costing only 6.5 mil prior to Cesar signing, and released 14, with at least 2 more to go. It is a club with a plan, and should they stay up will be in a healthy position.

    Lescott(QPR) Clyne(MUN) Demel(FUL)
    Michu(SUN) Noble(FUL) Bale(NOR) Hoilett(mci) Kacaniklic(whu)
    Tevez(QPR) Van Persie(sou)

subs - Federici, Nelsen, Ivanovic, Torres

Seem to have my team playing against each other a lot this week... poor planning i guess. Anything you can see worth taking a hit for? Will likely need to take a hit next GW in order to accommodate Hazard so would rather not take one this week. Can i get away with that team though?

I'd say to look at them as win-win ... considering it's been so long since you've interviewed, when you go to them you either will do well, or you'll learn about the current process/questions and how well/not-so-well you've responded to them so that you'll nail them later on in another interview.

Do not like Mertesacker, Simpson, Lescott, Rafael, Dyer, Cazorla or Petric.....for one or many reasons.

I would seriously sit down and think about making some big changes mate. Just my two cents.

Why not?! Kagawa looks a fantasy beast with Rooney out, and RVP is a must have. Both have great fixtures... No brainer...
