After a summer-long chase, Sunderland finally secured the signature of Steven Fletcher from relegated Wolves last week. The 25-year joins up at the Stadium of Light on a four-year contract for an undisclosed fee and will afford the Wearsiders a much-needed attacking threat after some poor recent showings:

With Nicklas Bendtner returning to parent club Arsenal, Martin O’Neill has been desperately scouring the market for a striker. The Black Cats failed to score in four of their six pre-season fixtures and, having opened the season with a goalless draw at Arsenal, the Sunderland boss pushed through the transfer ahead of last week’s subsequently postponed match with Reading. A clearly delighted O’Neill paid tribute to his new forward and revealed he has high expectations for the season ahead:

“I think Steven will be terrific. I think he’s underrated – not by me – and is an exceptionally talented player who will help us enormously. He’s capable of scoring goals and has proved that. He’s also capable of linking play, which is very important to us. I’m hoping that now, at 25 years of age, [Steven] has got plenty of room to improve and really make his game even better. I think he’s capable of doing all that. He is a very good player and is improving, too.”

The Statistics

Fletcher’s career began in Scotland with Hibernian back in 2003-04. The 6 foot 1 inch forward stayed with the Easter Road outfit for six seasons, grabbing 43 goals from a total of 156 league appearances, though his final two campaigns with the Edinburgh outfit were by far the most productive. Handed the role as the club’s main forward, he produced double figure goal hauls in 2007-08 (winning the Scottish Football Writers’ Young Player of the Year Award) and 2008-09, with the likes of Real Madrid and Man City both rumoured to be interested in acquiring his services.

Ultimately, his next destination was Burnley, where Fletcher teamed up with fellow-Scot Owen Coyle. His lone season for the Turf Moor club harvested eight goals and four assists but, while Fletcher’s contribution wasn’t enough to save his side from the drop, it earned him a move to Molineux in time for the 2010/11 campaign. Fletcher demonstrated an eye for goal by notching double figures in each of his two terms at Molineux – in total, he produced 22 goals and six assists in 60 league matches before making his way to Sunderland. He has also represented Scotland at every level from Under 20 upwards and scored a single goal in eight appearances for the national side.

The Prospects

Barring injury, Fletcher looks nailed-on for Sunderland and seems the perfect capture for the Black Cats’ style of play. Likely to lead the line with Stephane Sessegnon tucked in behind, his arrival on Wearside certainly doesn’t bode well for the game time of Fraizer Campbell and Connor Wickham, while Louis Saha seems set to play the familiar role of impact sub.

Fletcher’s superb aerial prowess will be fed by the delivery of James McClean and Adam Johnson from out wide, with Seb Larsson’s set-piece ability also sure to prove valuable for Sunderland’s new penalty box predator. All three midfielders could well be anticipating an upturn in assists if Fletcher can bring his Wolves form to Wearside; a scenario that will boost the trio’s mid-price appeal across the Fantasy games.

An FPL price of 7.0 looks reasonable for a proven top-flight goalscorer such as Fletcher, while his valuation of 7.7 in the Sky Sports game also seems relatively budget-friendly – it may well transpire that he is on spot-kicks at the expense of Larsson; a situation we’ll be keeping a keen eye on.

With last week’s home clash against Reading postponed, Fantasy managers will be hoping Sunderland can reschedule in the near future, offering us a double Gameweek for the Black Cats somewhere along the line. For now, though, the short-term fixtures are a mixed bag – a weekend trip to on-song Swansea is followed by a home clash with Liverpool before tempting games against West Ham and Wigan. If Fletcher can hit the ground running, he could well entice Fantasy managers as a decent mid-price option, with O’Neill relying on the Scot to add an extra attacking thrust and help the Black Cats improve upon last season’s thirteenth place finish.

    My captaincy options are:

    a. Tevez
    b. RvP
    c. Bale

Literally 80% of my league have Tevez and will (c).. so do I play it safe and do the same or is this an opportunity..?

i'd say yes. i have all 3 as well. now we've jumped early on RVP, our rivals will likely cap tev, and their scoring odds are the same, i'd say we oughta go robin( not advocating mass thievery). we still get half tevez's cap points in any case so, worst comes to worst, it oughtn't be catastrophic

The other way of looking at this though, is that by captaining Tevez you negate his contribution, and everything RvP scores is our margin over our competitors.

Between the 3, I actually want to go for Bale as the differential. Ade starting at Norwich will help create the space for Bale to cause havoc; monster score possible.

But I think come Friday I will err on the side of caution. Still early days yet.. no need for any risks.

    Who is The Secret Footballer?

TSF writes a weekly column for The Guardian. If you're interested you can access all the articles from here http://www.whoisthesecretfootballer.co.uk/what-we-know/ I hardly care who he is but it occurs to me that it might be fun to try to work it out. There are so many knowledgeable fans on here that I reckon there's a good chance somebody can crack it.

It's possible that TSF has thrown in some false information to put people off the scent. If he has we'll surely fail but Iet's have a go anyway. I'm off on holiday today but if other people would like to copy and paste this post onto other pages so it doesn't sink without trace feel free to do so.

    (a) TSF is a Premiership footballer (or he was last season anyway)

    (b) TSF is English

    (c) TSF is white

    (d) TSF is a veteran player

    (e) TSF might well be a central midfielder. The evidence for this is that his manager said "he wasn't half the player of Paul Scholes". He also forged a successful partnership with a player he hated and they competed against each other for goals.

    (f) TSF hasn't been capped for England.

Now we come to some clues that might well be nailed by people on here. If we can get this club we've surely got every chance of eventual success:

    (g) TSF played for a team that was relegated on the final day of the season. This was not last season. Are you a fan of such a club?

    (h) In this match a goal was scored 5 minutes from time "at the other end of the country". This goal sealed relegation for TSF's club. Can you remember an incident like this?

    (i) I forget the exact wording but TSF was shocked/surprised and had never thought that this club could be relegated. I can think of 3 biggish clubs surprisingly relegated off the top of my head: Southampton/Newcastle/West Ham. Can you think of any others?

We also know some things about TSF's career. I'll present it chronologically as best I am able and according to my own reckoning:

    (j) TSF "started out in the lower leagues". Note the plural. This implies he played below Championship level for at least one season. It seems most probable that he wasn't on loan from a big club but this isn't certain.

    (k) TSF played for a club who were promoted to the Premiership before he established himself as a Premiership player. It seems probable that this was a club that was small by Premiership standards because he talks about a club spending on facilities and things that were unnecessary just because they had money all of a sudden.

    (l) TSF had a period trying to establish himself as a Premiership player. I would speculate that this was with the same club that he helped to promotion.

    (m) TSF had a big money transfer on transfer deadline day. I would speculate that he was bought by a bigger club. If he's had only 3 Premiership clubs I would speculate that he was bought by the club who were eventually relegated.

    (n) TSF and his club at the time had a period of success. I would speculate that was with this same club.

    (o) When TSF's club was relegated (as described above) he didn't play for them again and he was transferred back into the Premiership. Possibly this was to his current club (last season).

    (p) TSF's career wasn't going well at the end of last season. It sound like he was dropped but it's possible that he's suffering injuries.

There are other random clues that might help eliminate people:

    (q) TSF has played for a club that would often get gubbed at places like Old Trafford and The Emirates. A draw was a bit of a miracle sort of thing. Maybe this was the promoted club but it reads to me like he's talking about his current club.

    (r) TSF has scored at Old Trafford.

That's all I can think of just now. I can't point you to the individual pieces of evidence but the articles are moderately entertaining if anybody's interested.

A Gold Star to whoever comes up with a player who fits all the criteria!!!

It must be Joe because as we all know he's not played for England. There's a whole article where TSF says he would have been proud to have played for England but he doesn't think it would be much fun.

No I don't think it's Kitson. Started in lower leagues TICK. Promoted with Reading TICK. Big money transfer to Stoke MAYBE. But who was the club he was relegated with? This is a club he was surprised were relegated so Portsmouth TICK because they were thought to be richish at one time. But Pompey were relegated well before the end of the season and Kitson wasn't transferred back into the Premiership.

Ahh it seems to fit in all sorts of ways...and he's also had a deadline day transfer to Pompey. Also the red hair and the comparison to Scholes makes sense not least since Scholes started as a striker when he was very young.

It also fits with something I didn't type. He made a transfer that he regretted which obviously ties in with his Stoke experience.

Does anyone know anything about the circumstances of Reading's relegation?

"(Reading)...suffered relegation on the final day of the season, as Fulham's victory at Portsmouth saw Reading finish in 18th place"

this fits too and Reading won at Derby...so when TSF says "the opposite end of the country" his geography is a little rough but probably excellent by the standards of the average professional footballer

united will stop conceding once Carrick is removed from the back and they quit playing Valencia at rb, so for the moment no.

City should keep a clean sheet soon enough...we have been the best defence for the past 2 years and are just starting with a rough patch. Should be fixed soon enough, maybe as soon as this weekend.

    RMT (WC)

    Vorm (Cerny)

Rangel - Rafael - Baines (Jenkinson, Demel)

Michu - Kagawa - Kac - Fellaini (Hazard)

    RVP(c) - Petric - Tevez

Only areas of concern are no backup keeper but I'm comfortable with Vorm for now because of fantastic fixtures. Might swap Fellaini for Piennar before the deadline too.

    Feedback?

It doesn't look like we will be bringing any more players in this window. A lot of toon fans are up in arms about this, but I think that a quick comparison with the squad at this stage last season shows that we are much stronger.

    1) GK. No change. Except Krul has another season under his belt. Experience is a major factor for young keepers.
    2) Fullbacks. a) Santon is fully bedded in. We had to make do with Raylor for the first half of last season, b) anita played loads of games for ajax at full back so can provide quality cover. c) Tavernier has stepped up after a couple of successful loan spells last season
    3) Centre backs. a) PERCHINIO!!!
    4) Centre mid. a) Replaced Guthrie with Anita. We now have 4 quality centre mids for 3 positions. b) Cabeye has a full season under his belt, c) abeid and bigi ready to step up
    5) Attacking mid. a) Marveaux is fully fit. b) Amalfitano looks like he is ready to challenge for the first team. c) Sameobi, Ferguson, Vuckic are a year older and should be ready to challenge for the first team
    6) Started last season with Ba, Best, Shola, and Lovenkrands. We now have Ba, Cisse and Shola. Overall much stronger. We could do with an extra body in there, but as we will play a lot with just one central striker we should be ok until January,

So overall the squad is much stronger than at this stage last year. Whether it is strong enough to keep a challenge for 4th spot up, alongside a run in the europa cup remains to be seen.

Sunderland have suddenly become relevant again. What will your first team look like? Something like this?

          --------------------Mignolet--------------------
          Bardsley---O'Shea--Cuellar--Collback
          Johnson--Catermole--Larsson--McLean
          -------------------Sessegnon--------------------
          ---------------------Fletcher----------------------

          That's a decent team.

cant see that happening myself but i like your attitude maxi! the only way i really see us finishing ahead of the toon is if they go far in europe at the detriment to their league campaign. the danger for us is an inevitable injury to fletcher then suddenly we'll be lacking a goalscorer. again.

Good morning gentlemen. Long time lurker first time poster from Canada. I am at an absolute loss on how I should tackle my team for this week. My current squad is:

    Friedel Federici
    Fonte Cole Demel Cueller Lescott
    Lampard Pienaar Bale Michu Guthrie
    Tevez Torres Pog

I think this is the first time in a long time I've considered a 8 or 12 point hit to make changes. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. I have RVP, Baines, and Kagawa in mind.

cole lampard torres on bench.......demel and lescott COULD get u clean sheets, cuellar you never know away at Swansea

pienaar bale and michu all have great fixtures.

I dont think you should keep both Lampard and Cole personally....so would spend 4 pts and consider getting rid of one and bringing in a Baines, Kagawa, HBA, Nolan, S(T)aylor, Rangel

It was a joke, re; the 300pages of comments about the same 14 or so players I just mentioned who are 'must haves'.

In the short time I have been reading these boards/this board, I would say it is just about nailed down to Michu, Kagawa or RVP but not both, Hazard or Torres but not both, Ben Arfa, Graham and Tevez.

Baines, any of the 5m def's such as Saylor, Rangel, and Ridgewell are all good bets but not essential.

The usual suspects such as Yaya, Nasri, Lampard, etc. are not 'must haves' but clearly can't be overlooked.

at this early stage of the season who are people backing for top goal scorer? nz tab has torres as favourite... with rooney and aguero injured it could be a good time for a punt. i like aguero at 11- it would be puting it down to fate for his quick recovery though

I reckon Aguero comes back and lights it up, starting with a hat trick v Arsenal as a 2nd half sub!!!! Aguero for top scorer, with RVP and Tevez 2nd and 3rd respectively. Torres goes cold again and Chelsea are back in for a goalscorer come January.

Is it just me or are the striker options really boring and limited right now??? With no Ronaldo, Drogba, Anelka, Aguero, Rooney, Van Nistelrooy, Henry, an unfit Adebayor, an RVP not settled with a makeshift Man United team (which let's face it it sort of is at the moment), a hit or miss Torres (let's be fair he's not guaranteed 'BACK' just yet'), a Dembe Ba who spends more time on the wings, Cisse goalless after two and hardly getting in positions, etc. etc. etc. etc.

      What gives???

I sort of miss the Ronaldo at captain every week with Lampard getting another 20pts a week days! The other 9 players picked themselves almost.

Was a lot easier, but then again, that makes this year and presumably future years a lot harder and a lot more competitive, thus better!!!

I've heard a few people arguing the need fir spurs coverage and I for one disagree with the need for a spurs player, they've hardly shown any form and I think they may struggle under avb and there are others clubs which surely require coverage well before them, ie man.u man city chelsea swansea etc, spurs are by far a team which are demanding fantasy cover

No, he will enhance it by winning the midfield and constantly recycling possession out to the flanks, in particular Bale.

    Right, my original question was....

In popular wisdom when does the pt hit warrant the playing of the wildcard?
    8, 12, 16, more?

Also since I've already taken a 4 pt hit this week, can I play the wc and have the 4 pt hit removed?

      -8.

i think you could take a -8 hit without losing too much sleep over it.

-12 and your week is pretty much wiped out.

should only take an 8 point hit once or twice in the season, preferably never, and if you have to it should at least be a double game week.

no, if you've already spent pts and confirmed it you have lost those points regardless of whether you use ur wildcard or not. spend 4 or 8 more points or be done with it for the week

I'm pretty sure if you play your wc you get your 4 point hit back. Your first question is sooo debatable, I suppose it comes down to how critical the 3/4/5 transfers you wanna make are.

I shall investigate the wc, even though I didn't want to do it early again this year. But the template seems to have taken shape quickly, and I always make a bad start, just like that Everton. So since they haven't, I can't either.

Maxi, do you really expect sunderland to finish above us this year? They have a decent team now, but the only one of their players that I would pick in my first choice toon 11 would be johnson. On the left of a front 3. I take it you disagree!! What is your thinking? I would appreciate some neutral views on this.

True. We don't really know how well our squad will stand up to the extra fixtures. I have a lot of faith in the lesser known squad members, but if they don't step up, we could struggle to compete on both fronts.

Perchinio is key for me. If he continues his improvement, then we have decent depth in defensive areas. If he regresses to his form prior to the second half of the season, we could be in trouble.

It will be close but I can see Sunderland just edging it. Fatigue may result to be a curse for your team. You need a good replacement for Gutierrez who can supply regular crosses.(I know he helps you defensively but you need an attacking mid there. Can Amalfitano & Marveaux play there?)

Would have gone Richardson over Santon (before he left) but that's not an op anymore.

Sessegnon in an advanced mid position perhaps? Instead of Jonas?

      But overall Newcastle > Sunderland
