After a summer-long chase, Sunderland finally secured the signature of Steven Fletcher from relegated Wolves last week. The 25-year joins up at the Stadium of Light on a four-year contract for an undisclosed fee and will afford the Wearsiders a much-needed attacking threat after some poor recent showings:

With Nicklas Bendtner returning to parent club Arsenal, Martin O’Neill has been desperately scouring the market for a striker. The Black Cats failed to score in four of their six pre-season fixtures and, having opened the season with a goalless draw at Arsenal, the Sunderland boss pushed through the transfer ahead of last week’s subsequently postponed match with Reading. A clearly delighted O’Neill paid tribute to his new forward and revealed he has high expectations for the season ahead:

“I think Steven will be terrific. I think he’s underrated – not by me – and is an exceptionally talented player who will help us enormously. He’s capable of scoring goals and has proved that. He’s also capable of linking play, which is very important to us. I’m hoping that now, at 25 years of age, [Steven] has got plenty of room to improve and really make his game even better. I think he’s capable of doing all that. He is a very good player and is improving, too.”

The Statistics

Fletcher’s career began in Scotland with Hibernian back in 2003-04. The 6 foot 1 inch forward stayed with the Easter Road outfit for six seasons, grabbing 43 goals from a total of 156 league appearances, though his final two campaigns with the Edinburgh outfit were by far the most productive. Handed the role as the club’s main forward, he produced double figure goal hauls in 2007-08 (winning the Scottish Football Writers’ Young Player of the Year Award) and 2008-09, with the likes of Real Madrid and Man City both rumoured to be interested in acquiring his services.

Ultimately, his next destination was Burnley, where Fletcher teamed up with fellow-Scot Owen Coyle. His lone season for the Turf Moor club harvested eight goals and four assists but, while Fletcher’s contribution wasn’t enough to save his side from the drop, it earned him a move to Molineux in time for the 2010/11 campaign. Fletcher demonstrated an eye for goal by notching double figures in each of his two terms at Molineux – in total, he produced 22 goals and six assists in 60 league matches before making his way to Sunderland. He has also represented Scotland at every level from Under 20 upwards and scored a single goal in eight appearances for the national side.

The Prospects

Barring injury, Fletcher looks nailed-on for Sunderland and seems the perfect capture for the Black Cats’ style of play. Likely to lead the line with Stephane Sessegnon tucked in behind, his arrival on Wearside certainly doesn’t bode well for the game time of Fraizer Campbell and Connor Wickham, while Louis Saha seems set to play the familiar role of impact sub.

Fletcher’s superb aerial prowess will be fed by the delivery of James McClean and Adam Johnson from out wide, with Seb Larsson’s set-piece ability also sure to prove valuable for Sunderland’s new penalty box predator. All three midfielders could well be anticipating an upturn in assists if Fletcher can bring his Wolves form to Wearside; a scenario that will boost the trio’s mid-price appeal across the Fantasy games.

An FPL price of 7.0 looks reasonable for a proven top-flight goalscorer such as Fletcher, while his valuation of 7.7 in the Sky Sports game also seems relatively budget-friendly – it may well transpire that he is on spot-kicks at the expense of Larsson; a situation we’ll be keeping a keen eye on.

With last week’s home clash against Reading postponed, Fantasy managers will be hoping Sunderland can reschedule in the near future, offering us a double Gameweek for the Black Cats somewhere along the line. For now, though, the short-term fixtures are a mixed bag – a weekend trip to on-song Swansea is followed by a home clash with Liverpool before tempting games against West Ham and Wigan. If Fletcher can hit the ground running, he could well entice Fantasy managers as a decent mid-price option, with O’Neill relying on the Scot to add an extra attacking thrust and help the Black Cats improve upon last season’s thirteenth place finish.

As a Juve fan, I can't understand how the hll it's possible that we/marotta don't manage to sign a top (or even almost top) striker even with cl football this season.

Don't care that we didn't get Berbatov, but the fact that even he chose fulham, ohh c'mon, we really don't have a chance in transfermarket these days ðŸ™

yep, might not be long that serie a will lose even the third spot of cl football.
I'm biased, but have to say it's quite boring when we have only few teams with huge benches to fight for top spots in cl.

Barfa for me. There is enough uncertainty over the toon strikers at the moment to put me off. 4-3-3 is clearly our best formation, so that could mean either Ba on the left, or one of the dembas on the bench.

    Chech/Jussi
    Zaba, Rafa, Jenkinson, Gorkss, fonte
    Lamps, VDV, Michu, Maloney, Robson-Kanu
    Torres, Rooney, Tevez

I have already taken a 8pt hit to transform Rooney, Robson Kanu and Torres into Ba, Kagawa and Ade
But now I am looking at having to play VDV this week and Lamps over Hazard next week. 12pt hit seems just too much to handle. Or could I?

I am taking 12pt hit for my team (maybe even 16??), and will play all the new recruits for the next 4-5 GWs. Hence, the cost of the hit is 'amortized' and less painful

Prefer to save WC for DGW there the potential upsize is > 12 pt

thanks for the answer I am currently considering sticking with the hit, but it is getting harder and harder with lamps dropping in price soon and VDV not playing. My thought process is also saying that during the DGW I can also take the hit to make sure I have the right team.

People saying don't take a 4 point hit for a defender ever, this is true and I agree it's a stupid idea to ever do. But despite the stupidity of it, sometimes you might want to gamble. And obviously you should never bother taking out a potential 2 pointer for a boring defender who won't score. Like someone said it's only worth it if it's for someone like Baines. I think if you're going to do it, you are doing it in the hope that a) they keep a CS and B) they score or assist and thus get BP's.

Therefore if you ever do it, you should captain them, it's only worth it if you're willing to completely gamble.

For sure, but what I mean is that if you EVER do it, then you should recognise it as an extreme gamble and should only do it with the aspiration that for example 'Baines at home to weak opposition' is going to have a one in a million gameweek and get you a bucketload. I'm probably talking a load of sh*te

cheers man, ye it gives me the creeps too, although captaining one in a DGW is actually a great move as seen with Ivanovic. I must remember that one. Basically I'm saying that a hit for a def is as irrational as playing roulette, but if you win big people don't call you an idiot, they say fair play.

Ye I get you, but what I was getting at maybe was, as you say, you would apply that rule to a mid/striker quite easily, but we don't with defenders because they're not likely to score highly, hence, don't take a hit for a defender, but if you're going to be dumb enough to do it, might as well go the whole hog and double your bets.

It's ok , you don't have to get the 4 pt hit back in that week
If your new defender performs over a series of games the 4 points can be set against the actual returns of the run

the reason you take a hit for a defender is to get one transfer ahead. not to immediately gain the lost 4 points.

It's worth 4pt hit when your outgoing defender is about to lose 0.1 and the incoming gain 0.1. But only in the early part of the season when preserving value is so important. The odds are your new defender won't score big so captaining will only make the hit worse.

-Daily Mirror claim that Andy Carroll has been told to consider his future after being left out of Liverpool's squad for tonight's Europa League tie with Hearts at Anfield.
-The Sun reports that the Merseyside club will sign Athletic Bilbao striker Fernando Llorente if they can sell Carroll before tomorrow night's deadline.

What do you think about it?

I think they wont be able to sell him as they are asking for about 20 mill, and they wont get that for him. They also cant sell him at any more of a discount because of Financial fair play issues.

It would be awesome if Spurs signed Llorente, I can't believe they haven't tried for him. He will also come in less than 20m as has just a year left on his contract. 🙂

I don't think Llorente will come to Liverpool, it's like a sideways move for him. I certainly don't see playing CL with Liverpool next season.

It could be Chelsea too, would be a great move for them.

I would be wary of Pienaar even though I have him now, Mirallas looks good for Everton and Jelavic is a goal machine, might lessen Pienaar's overall scores substantially? Who knows, just speculating.

I was thinking of bringing in Morrison or Brunt from WBA in a week or so, they have good fixtures and look a decent side, good differentials possibly.

Thing is, everyone in ML will (C) Tevez, so I will either lose or gain ground this week imo.

Hoping to go 3/3 in captain choices this week.

Out of those two, RvP for me.

Soton defence is leaky. Fullbacks race forward and don't get back in time.
Valencia, Young, Kagawa should provide ample service for him.
RvP should be on penos and some FKs and CKs too, may not be the case with Tevez if Balotelli starts.
As for the QPR defence, Bosingwa, M'Bia(?), Cesar could help them tighten up. Could.

I'm leaning towards Tevez. As a United fan I'm still not convinced of their form. Kagawa and RVP is still a very green combination. They will need time to gell with the rest of the team and each other.

Tevez is in an established side and are at home to a shambolic QPR. I sense a big result for City.

Im going tevez, RVP is a differential right now, tevez will be EVERYONES captain. Just having RVP is good enough for me.

It's all about Danny Guthrie at 4.5m....he's the one!

He's nailed on to start every game, will play "in the hole" 50% of games, has already scored, has some set piece duties.

He'll be one of the fantasy buys of the season.

The Kac, Marveaux, Sterling etc.....they don't come close. Though Kac has shown potential....

ouch, players like britton are pointless (literally) in fantasy terms, like when I see teams with Mikel

All good, Britton is solid. But Guthrie has some upside - and can potentially be a great budget buy. Many WC teams won't take him as he doesn't play this week, but he'll be gold!

I was very skeptical at the start of the season but now I am a convert. I never expected him to play so advanced and to have a share of set pieces. I'm gutted I went for Noble ahead of him for GW1

what's the latest on Riise gents?? Looking like he will play on the weekend? Paid to bring him in and he picks up a knock. Just great. Would have rather had a 4.0 could really use the funds….

Already did it. Stupid thing was swapped Hangeland for Riise. Just had a feeling about him racking up assists, cleanies and the odd goal.

Then he got injured and my dreams went up in smoke.

But ya, any info would be appreciated.

not sure on his fitness, but there are better value Fulham defenders - Hangeland (5.0) and Hughes (4.5) that could free up some more funds for you.

Hazard ownership already over 31%. Surely his price can't go much above 10 m over the international break?
