After a summer-long chase, Sunderland finally secured the signature of Steven Fletcher from relegated Wolves last week. The 25-year joins up at the Stadium of Light on a four-year contract for an undisclosed fee and will afford the Wearsiders a much-needed attacking threat after some poor recent showings:

With Nicklas Bendtner returning to parent club Arsenal, Martin O’Neill has been desperately scouring the market for a striker. The Black Cats failed to score in four of their six pre-season fixtures and, having opened the season with a goalless draw at Arsenal, the Sunderland boss pushed through the transfer ahead of last week’s subsequently postponed match with Reading. A clearly delighted O’Neill paid tribute to his new forward and revealed he has high expectations for the season ahead:

“I think Steven will be terrific. I think he’s underrated – not by me – and is an exceptionally talented player who will help us enormously. He’s capable of scoring goals and has proved that. He’s also capable of linking play, which is very important to us. I’m hoping that now, at 25 years of age, [Steven] has got plenty of room to improve and really make his game even better. I think he’s capable of doing all that. He is a very good player and is improving, too.”

The Statistics

Fletcher’s career began in Scotland with Hibernian back in 2003-04. The 6 foot 1 inch forward stayed with the Easter Road outfit for six seasons, grabbing 43 goals from a total of 156 league appearances, though his final two campaigns with the Edinburgh outfit were by far the most productive. Handed the role as the club’s main forward, he produced double figure goal hauls in 2007-08 (winning the Scottish Football Writers’ Young Player of the Year Award) and 2008-09, with the likes of Real Madrid and Man City both rumoured to be interested in acquiring his services.

Ultimately, his next destination was Burnley, where Fletcher teamed up with fellow-Scot Owen Coyle. His lone season for the Turf Moor club harvested eight goals and four assists but, while Fletcher’s contribution wasn’t enough to save his side from the drop, it earned him a move to Molineux in time for the 2010/11 campaign. Fletcher demonstrated an eye for goal by notching double figures in each of his two terms at Molineux – in total, he produced 22 goals and six assists in 60 league matches before making his way to Sunderland. He has also represented Scotland at every level from Under 20 upwards and scored a single goal in eight appearances for the national side.

The Prospects

Barring injury, Fletcher looks nailed-on for Sunderland and seems the perfect capture for the Black Cats’ style of play. Likely to lead the line with Stephane Sessegnon tucked in behind, his arrival on Wearside certainly doesn’t bode well for the game time of Fraizer Campbell and Connor Wickham, while Louis Saha seems set to play the familiar role of impact sub.

Fletcher’s superb aerial prowess will be fed by the delivery of James McClean and Adam Johnson from out wide, with Seb Larsson’s set-piece ability also sure to prove valuable for Sunderland’s new penalty box predator. All three midfielders could well be anticipating an upturn in assists if Fletcher can bring his Wolves form to Wearside; a scenario that will boost the trio’s mid-price appeal across the Fantasy games.

An FPL price of 7.0 looks reasonable for a proven top-flight goalscorer such as Fletcher, while his valuation of 7.7 in the Sky Sports game also seems relatively budget-friendly – it may well transpire that he is on spot-kicks at the expense of Larsson; a situation we’ll be keeping a keen eye on.

With last week’s home clash against Reading postponed, Fantasy managers will be hoping Sunderland can reschedule in the near future, offering us a double Gameweek for the Black Cats somewhere along the line. For now, though, the short-term fixtures are a mixed bag – a weekend trip to on-song Swansea is followed by a home clash with Liverpool before tempting games against West Ham and Wigan. If Fletcher can hit the ground running, he could well entice Fantasy managers as a decent mid-price option, with O’Neill relying on the Scot to add an extra attacking thrust and help the Black Cats improve upon last season’s thirteenth place finish.

He hasn't been made full time captain, it's just while the team is settling. First choice CBs will be Kaboul and Vertonghen and i'd imagine that the captaincy will go to one of them soon.

so why exactly did cesear want to move to qpr??

maybe qpr defense won't do quite so terribly (especially if they sign dawson and carvalho - any news on either of these transfers?) and my fabio pick will work out after all! here's to hoping at least

I'm wondering the same thing. They are signing a lot of players best to steer clear of qpr for a few weeks until they become even moderately settled, atm it's like when u sign 15 new players for ur newly promoted side in football manager and they cant play together for ages! Cheers for the reply on the last page, no don't have Baines, without wildcard I have

      Friedel/begovic

      Cuellar Zab Hamgeland McCartney Nelsen!

      Kagawa Nasri Taarabt Ireland Noble

      Rvp Tevez Graham

4.9 in the bank for Taarabt to Hazard next week.

seems a bit of an odd choice. why didn't he just stay at inter??

well i already have fabio and don't have a transfer to get rid yet so i'll be keeping and hoping that qpr can shore up at the back and maybe he can get some attacking points too

taraabt is 6.0 right? so transfering in hazard should take up 4 or maybe 4.1 or 4.2 depending how long you take. that means the next week you could do hangeland to hughes to free up enough money to upgrade zab to baines

another suggestion is i might dowgrade of one kags or nasri to pienaar (great fixtures) so you can get michu in for irelan

I know it's a strange one, money talks though and maybe inter haven't offered him the same money in his new deal?

Yeah I have been looking at something like that, I just can't spend 7.0 on Baines, I would as you said maybe switch pienaar for Nasri and then michu for Ireland if Nasri doesn't do it for me this week. Feels a little bit like chasing points from previous weeks though, was thinking maybe Adam Johnson instead of michu? Will probably be .5 cheaper than michu by the time I bring him in.

          How have you started?

maybe. i thought i saw somewhere that he's making less for qpr... though i could be wrong

oh alright. i just think that at 7.0 for his upcoming run of fixtures baines is great value!
likewise downgrading to pienaar is a good move. plus it allows you to upgrade. hmmm could go either way. sometimes its chasing last weeks points but sometimes it's getting someone playing well. that'd be like not getting rvp last season because you were chasing last weeks points... but adam johnson could be a good bet too. a bit more of a risk imo but could pay off nicely

i've started pretty well thanks. and yourself?

I REALLY like your team. Fabio and marveaux are your only weak points but you know that anyway. And as you will be rotating fabio with boyce anyway, I think it is well worth giving it a couple of weeks to see how they do with a new defence. They will surely sign at least one centre back.

I'm still undecided on RVP. I'm 0.1m away from a switch that I would be happy with (carzola + torres > RVP + 6m mid). The only decent mid that I could afford would be Dyer. Worth it? But Mrs China Mag has both dyer and RVP.

Looking at it though, surely Carzola + Torres will score more than Dyer + RVP? No. I guess the captain factor comes into play here.

I'm a little worried about nasri. i'm going to keep him for this week, but then maybe look to get rid for barfa next week.

thanks! yupp, hopefully will be able to take care of them in a couple weeks. problem is i'll have 0.0 in the bank so can't upgrade marveaux til i make another transfer... and like you say i'm planning to sit on fabio a couple weeks and see if qpr can keep some cleanies with a new gk and 1 or 2 new cb's

hmm that's a tough one. honestly i'd go rvp and dyer for a couple reasons. 1 man u will score and rvp should be a good bet in the points. plus its hard to go without mun cover in my opinion. 2 swans have very nice fixtures and i think dyer should score well. 3) arsenal attack still needs some more time to gel. two 0-0 games doesn't make me want an arsenal attacker yet. 4) torres is torres. not sure how he'll do and chelsea could yet sign a striker by friday. though i guess you'll know that before you decide

i'm a tad bit worried about nasri but hazard is first priority and if they play 4222 he should keep his place and do well. i'll keep at least a couple weeks then decide

yeahh! i said the super cup tomorrow so i thought you knew. figures it started so late! ;). was actually able to watch a bit

well what happened was in the first leg (you probably heard about this) messi failed to score at 3-1 up and then a few seconds later valdes screwed up and had the ball stolen from his feet by higuain to make it 3-2 and give madrid a second away goal

today i only saw min 5-15 and 70-90 so not sure about what happened in between there as i was in class. but from what i saw we looked very sloppy at the beginning. mascherano messed up on both goals. and both goals were strong (but not very well placed shots) that valdes probably should've saved. then apparently messi scored a fk so we lost that game 2-1 and tied 4-4 but lost on away goals. we had a few good opportunities right at the end but casillas saved them or we barely missed or something like that. alba got in behind once but his touch was just barely too far away so he couldn't get his shot off. that sort of thing. song looked good in his 10 min or so debut. set messi up for a shot in the last minute that just went wide

next summer i'd love it if we replaced valdes. though doubt it'll happen.... and glad we signed song as he can cover cb in case mascherano keeps messing up

      think your defense is a bit too expensive though... cuz you have 1 7.0, 1 6.0, 2 5.0 and a 4.5, either go with 1 expensive and 4 cheap (4-5) rotating defenders or 2 expensive and 3 cheap (4-4.5) defenders or 3 mid/expensive and 2 4.0's
i think if you don't have rvp you should at least have kagawa

During the international break, what is the best time to use your transfer(s)?

For example should you use it straight after the weekend games to jump on potential price rises or make your transfer in 2 weeks time just before GW4 so you can see if there's any injuries in the internationals?

Obviously you should wait because there'll inevitably be a few injuries. Depends whether you like to take risks for the sake of price rises or not.

To be honest, it can go both ways but definitely try to postpone until after the International games. Like for me getting Hazard, if he goes over 10.0, I won't be able to afford him so I'd get him the night before he rises. Otherwise, yeah try to postpone as much as possible.

FWIW I think playing the wildcard during the international break is a terrible time to play it.

Firstly, the first weekend of games after these break usually throws up some strange results. Players get rested and team lineups are generally that less predictable. The mini-break also almost takes some players out of their rhythm.. some will come back reinvigorated and become the new bandwagons who never crossed your mind the previous week.

Johnson Larsson and McClean rotation issues is something I see becoming a fantasy prospect problem within the next few weeks. For people with McClean or Larsson what are your thoughts on this?

I have McClean, I think Larsson's potential will dip drastically, he is good for the odd free kick though. I think McClean is a very aggressive attacking player, if Johnson/Sessegnon feed him he will get goals galore. The issue I see is if Fletcher starts banging them in, lessening the need for others to chip in. If that's the case then Johnson could be the man as he seems good for assists. It's so hard to tell but as a Sunderland fan, very mouthwatering

wont he play all three?.... johnson right, McClean left and Larsson in the centre. The only issue I see is Larssons value reducing as there are more people on set pieces.

don't have either and not too sure...

if dempsey signs as rumoured that will cause even more rotation with sunderland as he could rotate with mcclean or with sess.

i've also heard that larsson might drop inside to cm and take cattermole's spot

I'm a Larsson owner. I think he'll play all 3 together. If Dempsey signs it could get trickier though with Sessegnon already in the mix.

Having said that i'm still selling him either next week or the week after.

Not great for this week. I'm currently mulling over the following options.

      1) Torres > Cisse (or other striker up to 10m)
      2) Carzola + Torres > Dyer + RVP
      3) Sit tight and play hughes (whm)

I would go for 2), but Mrs China Mag has both Dyer and RVP. We try to go for different players unless someone comes essential. I'm still not sure that RVP is essential. Especially with his run of fixtures after the next two.

What do you reckon? I guess you will vote for RVP!

The RVP move would be for a hit.

The Rooney injury has certainly promoted RVP in my thinking (was going to stay well clear before), but now he becomes as good an option as other strikers in terms of value for money. That means I might get him in and out for runs of good fixtures, but I don't think its worth it for his next two good fixtures, because I would have to take a hit.

Gunna WC next week. Playing around with different options atm (trying to get cover from most of the top teams and think long term).

    Jussi / Begovic
    Rafael / Ivanovic / Hangeland / Clyne / other 4.0 (Gunter?)
Bale or Cazorla / Hazard / Ben Arfa / Pienaar / Sterling
    RVP / Tevez / Graham

Any problems with that lot? I know Sterling could be a gamble but if it pays off would be excellent value. Any Liverpool fans know if he's likely to nail down the winger spot over Downing?

downgrade hangeland to hughes and upgrade ivanovic to baines

I'd look to get at least a SWA mid and forward for the next set of GWs. Fixtures great and they've looked on form so far so it's reasonable to double up. In fact, add a defender doesn't seem to be overkill for me. What's overkill is having 2 SWA mids and a forward instead.

😆 I captained Terry! I would have been the happiest manager if that was Ivanovic instead.

For GW3, I did a Terry > Baines and Lampard > Nasri. Without CHE in GW3, I hope I have the advantage as almost all my opponents in my leagues have Torres, Ivanovic and Hazard so I'm really looking forward to GW3 and see how they cope with this.

How about you? I see you took a hit - for Ivanovic and Torres?

ahh i gotcha. both good moves. yeahh you should. for me most of my leagues are ffsers so most people don't have CHE or can cope with it well

i did torres to rvp. then took a hit for ivanovic to baines because i really want him and won't be able to afford him if i wait. 0.0 in the bank then next week will be taking a hit of hangeland to hughes to free up funds for bale to hazard

Damn, the price rise really kills us non-Hazard owners. Yeah, RVP is going to be another one. With Rooney gone, he'll be close to must-have and I'm not sure I'll have the funds to get him in by then. If only Bent had delivered...

Looks like Hazard is a must-have. Also fancy him to contribute even in big games. Great move there.

Cazorla (Bale in GW5) / Hazard / Pienaar / Ben Arfa / Guthrie
                  RVP / Tevez / Graham
