After a summer-long chase, Sunderland finally secured the signature of Steven Fletcher from relegated Wolves last week. The 25-year joins up at the Stadium of Light on a four-year contract for an undisclosed fee and will afford the Wearsiders a much-needed attacking threat after some poor recent showings:

With Nicklas Bendtner returning to parent club Arsenal, Martin O’Neill has been desperately scouring the market for a striker. The Black Cats failed to score in four of their six pre-season fixtures and, having opened the season with a goalless draw at Arsenal, the Sunderland boss pushed through the transfer ahead of last week’s subsequently postponed match with Reading. A clearly delighted O’Neill paid tribute to his new forward and revealed he has high expectations for the season ahead:

“I think Steven will be terrific. I think he’s underrated – not by me – and is an exceptionally talented player who will help us enormously. He’s capable of scoring goals and has proved that. He’s also capable of linking play, which is very important to us. I’m hoping that now, at 25 years of age, [Steven] has got plenty of room to improve and really make his game even better. I think he’s capable of doing all that. He is a very good player and is improving, too.”

The Statistics

Fletcher’s career began in Scotland with Hibernian back in 2003-04. The 6 foot 1 inch forward stayed with the Easter Road outfit for six seasons, grabbing 43 goals from a total of 156 league appearances, though his final two campaigns with the Edinburgh outfit were by far the most productive. Handed the role as the club’s main forward, he produced double figure goal hauls in 2007-08 (winning the Scottish Football Writers’ Young Player of the Year Award) and 2008-09, with the likes of Real Madrid and Man City both rumoured to be interested in acquiring his services.

Ultimately, his next destination was Burnley, where Fletcher teamed up with fellow-Scot Owen Coyle. His lone season for the Turf Moor club harvested eight goals and four assists but, while Fletcher’s contribution wasn’t enough to save his side from the drop, it earned him a move to Molineux in time for the 2010/11 campaign. Fletcher demonstrated an eye for goal by notching double figures in each of his two terms at Molineux – in total, he produced 22 goals and six assists in 60 league matches before making his way to Sunderland. He has also represented Scotland at every level from Under 20 upwards and scored a single goal in eight appearances for the national side.

The Prospects

Barring injury, Fletcher looks nailed-on for Sunderland and seems the perfect capture for the Black Cats’ style of play. Likely to lead the line with Stephane Sessegnon tucked in behind, his arrival on Wearside certainly doesn’t bode well for the game time of Fraizer Campbell and Connor Wickham, while Louis Saha seems set to play the familiar role of impact sub.

Fletcher’s superb aerial prowess will be fed by the delivery of James McClean and Adam Johnson from out wide, with Seb Larsson’s set-piece ability also sure to prove valuable for Sunderland’s new penalty box predator. All three midfielders could well be anticipating an upturn in assists if Fletcher can bring his Wolves form to Wearside; a scenario that will boost the trio’s mid-price appeal across the Fantasy games.

An FPL price of 7.0 looks reasonable for a proven top-flight goalscorer such as Fletcher, while his valuation of 7.7 in the Sky Sports game also seems relatively budget-friendly – it may well transpire that he is on spot-kicks at the expense of Larsson; a situation we’ll be keeping a keen eye on.

With last week’s home clash against Reading postponed, Fantasy managers will be hoping Sunderland can reschedule in the near future, offering us a double Gameweek for the Black Cats somewhere along the line. For now, though, the short-term fixtures are a mixed bag – a weekend trip to on-song Swansea is followed by a home clash with Liverpool before tempting games against West Ham and Wigan. If Fletcher can hit the ground running, he could well entice Fantasy managers as a decent mid-price option, with O’Neill relying on the Scot to add an extra attacking thrust and help the Black Cats improve upon last season’s thirteenth place finish.

Calling all VDV owners. Is there a bail out plan if he is sold?

Currently want to sell him to Hazard but obviously after this GW would be preferable otherwise I'd have to start Noble.

By then, the increasing price rise would hurt you even more. It's a decision about whether it be worth to get him in now for a hit since there won't be any games for CHE and if he will help you get those 4pts back over the course of a 6-week period.

I'm faced with a tricky dilemma..

Have VDV in my 11 but there's a strong possibility he won't be a Spurs player come Saturday.
My bench is Dembele and Clyne.. Dembele mightn't go straight into the Spurs team... and I've already taken a 4 point hit this week.

Worth another 4 points to do Dembele to HBA? Heart says no but head says Villa at home 🙂

Wait for confirmation that VDV is gone (unless prices changes are imminent and ruin your budget) and then do it, HBA will pay you back in spades over next few gameweeks

Mate I have planned exactly the same thing doing VDV > Hazard after this weekend. Him being sold of course could be a real problem. I have considered HBA as a replacement for VDV in the short term and getting Hazard in for someone else later on but I really don't know what to do.

In your case I would sell Dembele for a hit. He has never been good FF value and this won't improve at Spurs. However does it still allow you to sell VDV > Hazard? You would need a fair bit of money in the bank.

Hmm... I just checked his FPL profile, though, and calculated it. He won't have enough if he swaps directly Dembele to Hazard unless he does a VDV to HBA this coming GW.

That's the thing, I've already done 2 transfers this week in getting Baines & Petric for Cole and Bent which freed up some cash. (2.7m)

So Im potentially looking at another 4 point hit this week if I did VDV -> HBA now. Bench Dembele this week and it'd leave £4m banked to swap Dembele (6m) to Hazard next week.

I'm in exactly the same situation as I have also taken 1 hit this week. I think your plan works and I may do something similar although in my case it would Be Cazorla making way for Hazard (not sure thats worth it with Liverpool and Southampton coming up).

Basically I think the prudent thing to do is wait and see if he is actually sold. if he is sold in your case I think your proposed moves would be worth it because you have the funds and you have Dembele who is no good as a fantasy prospect.

Good morning deadzoners, here's my latest attempt at a WC team:

    GK: Begovic, Vorm

D: Demel, S.Taylor, Hughes, Cuellar, Baines

M: Guthrie, Pienaar, Michu, Bale, Nasri (who'll be replaced by Hazard on Saturday night)

    F: Graham, Tevez, RVP

    today I did:
Foster, Yaya & McClean ➡ Bego, Bale & Guthrie

I figured I could use a budget option in my front 8 who I wouldn't feel bad about benching most weeks and the idea of having Baines, Bale & Hazard in the same team was mouthwatering. Should I be worried about having no Sunderland attacking coverage?

Sunderland's best prospect is McLean and you can shift a mid priced midfielder (Pienaar) should you need to.

I really want Pienaar & McClean, but not as much as I want Hazard & Bale. I have a feeling I'm gunna regret not having McClean, esp. when they have a DGW with Reading at home as the midweek game coming up 🙁

If nasri is going to keep his place, I would prefer him over kagawa. City are coming into a very nice run of fixtures while man utds go real bad in a couple of weeks.

I do really like the idea of having kagawa, now that rooney is injured, but those fixtures are putting me off. I know that form is important, but Carzola and Nasri will have form AND fixtures (a beautiful combination), where as kagawa will just have form.

If your going to sell Torres do it for RVP, not many better striker options out there at the moment bar Tevez.

My thoughts on Nasri is that he may not start every game. Thats a risk you will have to live with

I did something similar this week when I sold

      Lampard > Michu
      Torres > RVP
      Ivan > Jenkinson -4pts

      GW4 VDV > Hazard

I kinda regret getting RVP in as it took up soo many transfers to make everything work to try and fit Hazard in next week. Its kinda nice to sit on Torres while you have him and let the Hazard hype pass by

Lets say VDV is sold on deadline day.

I have just enough money to sell him to Hazard next week with the FT
What do I do this week though?

    DDG

    Zab, Hangeland, Jenkinson
    Cazorla, Piennar, Michu, VDV???
    RVP, Tevez, Graham
    Subs: Noble???, Fabio, Clyne, Federici

Option A: Bench VDV and start Noble, selling VDV to Hazard next weeks FT
Option B: VDV ---> Barfa -4pts, GW4 Cazorla ---> Hazard FT (miss out on the Southampton fixture)

Would really appreciate some advice, thanks.

Wait until sat 15th morning. If i transfer in hazard now im pretty sure he'll pick up an injury in one over the break. He's easily worth 10m anyway, even 10.5. There will be plenty of opportunities to make up 0.1m here & there over the season... Plus, transfer budget rarely = points imo!

I reckon the Tottenham attack will be a lot stronger with the addition of Dembele, judging by what he did at Fulham he makes his team mates more likely to score points without scoring points himself.

If i swap torres & hba for hazard & ba that covers me i think. Def big hitter = baines... Mid big itter = hazard. Really want to get mclean in... Pretty sure he's going to get 10 league goals this year 🙂

I don't think you need both Hazard and Torres, Torres could be a good alternative if he does find/maintain form. DDG is the only player in your team I don't like (I shipped Vidic out).

Tempted to jettison DDG as well but keeping the faith... Clean sheets will start coming for utd when they shift carrick out of the back line.

See already have 2x swans in there, so ba or petric for torres makes better sense to fund hazard i think. Thanks for advice though!

perhaps. but swans have great fixtures and you only have 1 swans attacker.

either way make sure you get hazard and pienaar in your mf somehow without losing michu

Hope he'd finish some Petric's key passes at the least. Or maybe it's time to cash in on Petric?

David Silva "needs training and maybe to play, but not for 90 minutes" according to Roberto Mancini

so what's the chance Nasri starts next game vs QPR?
