Arsene Wenger plays down fears of an injury to Abou Diaby. John Terry and Ashley Cole return to training for Chelsea, Adam Johnson expects to be fit this weekend, Steve Clarke warns Goran Popov he may have to wait for a first-team chance, while Newcastle refuse to write-off Tim Krul’s chances of starting at Everton:

Arsene Wenger has dismissed any fears of a possible injury to Abou Diaby after the midfielder missed France’s win over Belarus on Tuesday evening:

“He has slight pain on the hip, on the sartorius muscle. It doesn’t seem serious at all to me. He even has a small chance to play on Saturday.”

With the Gunners’ Champions League campaign kicking off next Tuesday away to Montpellier, it may well be that Wenger will refuse to take any chances with Diaby this weekend. Bearing in mind the midfielders’ injury history, a home game with Southampton could well see the Arsenal boss opt for the likes of Francis Coquelin or Aaron Ramsey alongside Mikel Arteta instead – with a trip to City to follow in Gameweek 5, Diaby’s presence in the Gunners’ first XI is already proving to be more crucial than ever, with Alex Song now gone to Barcelona.

Steve Clarke has warned new loan signing Goran Popov he may have to bide his time before grabbing some game time this term:

“Goran is under no illusions. He knows he is coming in to fight for a place in the team and all the players now, after the start we’ve had, realise that they have to fight for their place in the team. As long as the competition is healthy then it can only be good for the club. If the team is performing well and getting results then the players not in the team will be disappointed but they’re not stupid. They understand that they have to wait for their chance. And it will come because it’s a long season.”

Clarke’s words are certainly good news for Fantasy owners of Liam Ridgewell and Gareth McAuley. The pair have accrued plenty interest after a couple of clean sheets in their opening three Gameweeks, with the latter already on 28 points in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game. A start for Popov at left-back would come at Ridgewell’s expense, though the former Birmingham man’s versatility could see him move to centre-half in favour of McAuley. Whilst such a scenario would hand us a headache, for the time being, at least, their places look secure ahead of a run of games that pits them against (ful, RDG, avl, QPR) in the next four.

Adam Johnson has handed Sunderland fans good news after taking to twitter to reveal he should be fit to face Liverpool this weekend. The winger missed both England games over the international break due to a thigh problem but looks on course to take his place on the right flank ahead of the Black Cats’ first home league game of the season.

Although doubts continue to build over Tim Krul’s availability for Newcastle’s trip to Everton next Monday, it seems Newcastle are determined to give the keeper until the last minute to prove his fitness. Krul pulled out of Holland’s match with Hungary after sustaining an elbow injury in training and he joins a list of defensive woes for Alan Pardew right now. The Magpies are yet to assess the full extent of Fabricio Coloccini’s hamstring problem – with Ryan Taylor and Danny Simpson ruled out and James Perch a doubt, Vernun Anita looks set to fill the breach at right-back at Goodison. The Dutchman admitted he has no qualms of moving to defence in a game that will see him square up to Steven Pienaar and Leighton Baines on the flank:

“We’ve got two injuries on that side so if the manager needs me on that side I’ll do my best for the team. It went well against Aston Villa. As a right-back you can come forward a lot, so I did that also and yes, I think it was a good performance. Central midfield is my position so the main focus is on the midfield – but if the manager needs me on the right side I can also play there.”

Roberto Martinez admitted Jean Beausejour remains a doubt for Wigan’s trip to Old Trafford on Saturday. The winger suffered a recurrence of a hamstring problem in the Gameweek 3 clash against Stoke, with his manager revealing:

“We did a scan straight after the game and it showed Jean had a tear in the hamstring. He has been recovering for the last week and a half, it’s been going well, but it’s still too early to tell whether he’ll be involved on Saturday. This one was the first summer in a while where he could actually rest his body after a long and demanding campaign. He suffered a couple of niggles trying to reactivate his body that we have to get through, but I’m hopeful he’ll benefit from this period in the long term. He is such a special player, such a consistent player, and once he’s fully fit he’ll go back to being a key member of our team.”

Beausejour’s four points per game in the previous FPL season had seen him earmarked as a viable mid-price candidate this time round. Providing seven assists in 16 games after moving from Birmingham last December, his role on the left of the Latics’ midfield four was a constant source of creativity – going on the above quotes Martinez clearly rates him and may decide to preserve the Chilean against United, with Maynor Figueroa moving back out wide to cover and Antolin Alcaraz returning to the back-three.

John Terry and Ashley Cole have both returned to light training ahead of Chelsea’s trip to QPR next Saturday. Cole has missed both England’s recent internationals, while Terry was sidelined for Tuesday’s draw with Ukraine due to an ankle problem – question marks must remain over their availability for the Loftus Road encounter, with David Luiz and Ryan Bertrand the obvious replacements. While Branislav Ivanovic has hogged the headlines at the back with his scoring exploits, Luiz’s presence has seemed beneficial to Roberto Di Matteo’s side – they have picked up clean sheets in both games the Brazilian has started this term.

I hit it on Saturday. The only one i've made .1 on so far is Jenkinson.

The likes of RVP, Tevez, Michu, Hazard, i want to keep anyway so they don't count.

I'm hoping i'll get another rise out of McAuley & Dyer. Reid looks unlikely and Demel has no chance.

Agree totally. Looks like I've done exactly the sames ones as you and am going to end up keeping the ones which have risen and shipping out the ones that haven't before they rise again so I can get my real team in.

I have Reid, HBA, Demel, McAuley, Dyer of which only the last two have any chance of rising.

I'm happy to see it hasn't been as bad as expected.

GW4 is a real stinker to start a WC team off on IMO. It has quite a few of the hallmarks of a low scoring GW.

I don't understand why everyone has waded into identikit teams using a wildcard. Surely you are using a wildcard because your start has not been great, so SURELY you want to do something a little bit different to the leaders?

Just for fun I am going to name a few players who could be MASSIVE differentials in the coming gameweeks, feel free to add!

    McClean (remember him?)
Bale (AVB can't be that bad can he?)
    Adebayor (see above)
    Johnson
Petric (berbatov and he may play extremely well together)
    Arteta
Fletcher (was a bandwagon but got taken over by Lambert)
    Kompany (remember him?)
    Vidic (ditto)
    Bent
Sessegnon (yes, that is 4 sunderland players)
    Larsson (make it 5)
Cisse (anyone see his headed goal in the international break?)
AGUERO (can't be far from a return)
    Nani
    Young
    Hangeland

    etc etc etc

    Anyone for anymore?

Agreed, but a WC has to balance the need for consistent points with the option of maybe catching up slightly on a ML leader.

I would argue the call is more on who you captain rather than putting inconsistent performers into your team and being cast further adrift.

Case in point is this weekend: Cazorla could fill his points and RVP may fail to score, but guess who i'm (c)?

Exactly. I'm in a great position to, but one (c) fail and someone else with the cojones to put the armband on someone else can really reap rewards!

I take your point though. I save my WC for DGWs etc.

A lot can be said for predicting a high performer's purple patch before everyone else (Michu case in point) but to chase this on multiple fronts is plain daft.

surely a balance is appropriate. so chose the core, but look for 1/2 differential choices to give you the edge if they come good? I (personally) would stick to the tried and tested captaincy choices whereever possible.

Players there who I wont have in my team from this list

Arteta - To many better alternatives into the Arsenal team
      Kompany - Too expensive
Sessegnon - A lot of MF options with Sunderland who are just as good if not better
Young - Won't get a long enough stint in the team (Same could probably be said about Nani too)

I wouldn't say they should pick some of these players on the basis of "so SURELY you want to do something a little bit different to the leaders" but people should pick some of them because they're quality players who will score lots of points for you over the course of the season while many players on the generic teams are flash in the pans who'll fizzle out fairly soon, and people will hold onto them too long because of combination of misguided thinking that the players were genuine quality and the fact that their price has gone up so much making a rebuy difficult.

I see your point but it HAS to be a mixture of both IMO.

There are a few popular players knocking about now who look too good to pass up. You can still have success by getting those in and being creative in the other parts of your team (which is what we are not seeing the template WC teams).

This is nonsense. Using the WC is about ensuring you score well in the future, not about catching up because you had a bad start. A team starting badly can start to perform and vice versa. I have had a great start (top 30,000) but have used the WC - I wanted to bring RVP in and needed to re-shape the team to accomodate him. I believe it was right to maximize my points going forward (not looking back). Thoughts?

good point - but the key over the long-term will be to switch away from the identikit team towards players who aren't fancied - timing I guess is everything. In my case (as is the case with so many here - I am maintaining a few of my differentials which is another way to go if you are happy with your core team. I would just like to see a little more variety in RMTs with 1/2 differential picks on average per team.

WC this week.... i love vermaelen but mertersacker +2mill seems a no brainer to me.

    currently

    mertesacker
    clarke
    nolan

    or...

    vermaelen
    clyne
    guthrie.

Rest of the team is pretty standard:
    Foster/Beg
    Mertesacker/Baines/Demel/Clarke/Davies
    Hazard/Cazrorla/Nolan/Dyer/Morrison
    Flethcer/RVP/Tevez

Worth trying to squeeze in Verminator or not??

Also with Davies looking limited on gametime now what is the replacement. With current team have 0.1mill in the bank so have 4.1 mill for the that position unless i create money from another position.....

The 2nd option is best by quite a margin

Also change Davies to Tate if you want a cheap run at the Swansea defence for a few weeks while Chico is out. I can't see Davies playing with the new signing

Cheers Seamy - food for thought!

in which case are those best 2 picks for other 2 positions? Clyne I'm happy with.

But Guthrie I have 4.5 mill to play with. Other alternatives that seem viable are Sterling, Puncheon, Schneiderlin or El Ahamdi. None are going to play that often which is the loss of losing Nolan I guess but would be nice to have a player to do something if needed!

Guthrie is the best option in that price range. But keep an eye on Sterling

For the other 4.0m defender place. You basically just need someone who will play every week.

          Your other realisitc options are;
          Barnett (NOR)
Bake (AVL) - Possible rotation risk when injuries return
Gunter or Gorkks (RDG) - Would mean doubling up on cheap Reading players

Agreed. They should just have all the qualifiers for a major tournament in the summer the year before the actual tournament and then do away with friendlies. Internationals are incredibly boring and would at least make the qualifiers more entertaining by bunching them up and cover the quiet spell in the alternating summers.

Re: earlier price rises comments. I don't think they've been too bad. THe middle of the int break is always slow for transfers, the pace will pick up a lot in the next few days (and of course Friday night/Saturday morning is mayhem). In fact, the pace already picked up yesterday.

I'm going to go on a limb and predict rises for:
    -Mertesacker
    -Vermaelen
    -Bertrand
    -Gibbs
    -Ivanovich
    -McAuley
    -Ridgewell
    -Jenkinson

    -Routledge
    -Dyer
    -Hazard
    -Michu

    -Tevez
    -Lambert
    -RVP
    -Berbatov

    Maybes:
    -Cazorla
    -Yaya Toure

    -Podolski
    -Torres

I personally cant see Lambert and Ridgewell rising. At least I hope they don't as it would screw up my transfer plans.

Both of them only had 250 NTI's yesterday (Approx 130 today so far). And they will need a further 7,500 people to invest before tomorrow night in order to rise.

      I just cant see it

if popov gets in at left back and ridgewell moves to centre back is there any chance that ridgewell could take olsens place at CB and pairs with mcAuley, dont know why its thought that if ridgewell goes to cb he'll automatically take mcAuleys place and not olsens

+ “We took off Robin for precautionary measures,” Van Gaal said. “It doesn’t seem to be too serious, but you never know. We didn’t want to take any risks.”

I think it says how much respect Van Gaal has for SAF (and for his place).

If/When people decide to bring in a West Brom defender. Is there anyone else considering bringing in Olsson ahead of Ridgewell (Threat of Popov) and McAuley (Soon to be 0.2m more expensive) ?

The projections show McAuley earning just 0.7 more points for the rest of the season. 6.2 to 6.9. But show Olsson outscoring him. Not by much mind you
