Earlier this morning, Southampton’s official twitter feed were first to give Fantasy managers the heads-up of a potential double Gameweek 22. The Saints’ previously postponed trip to Chelsea – cancelled due to the latter’s World Club Championship involvement last month – has now been pencilled in for Wednesday January 16.

Whether the league clash takes place all depends on the result of tomorrow’s FA Cup Third Round match between the two clubs. If the game ends all square, the above-mentioned date will be utilised for a cup replay and the league match rescheduled for another, as yet unspecified, time – if either side win, the double Gameweek will take place.

The news now adds an unexpected twist to the winter wildcard scenario. We could now, potentially, have back-to-back double Gameweeks to plan for, bearing in mind Arsenal and West Ham have a double the following week.

Southampton also visit Villa in Gameweek 22 and, while Chelsea face a testing trip to Stoke, there’s no doubt the home clash at the Bridge looks enticing, in spite of the Blues’ surprise loss to QPR last Wednesday. Indeed, Rafa Benitez’s decision to hand Juan Mata and Eden Hazard brief second-half sub roles against Harry Redknapp’s side should ensure they both start tomorrow’s match – boosting the Blues’ chances of progress.

Demba Ba’s move to Stamford Bridge – confirmed at midday by the Blues – brings him immediately onto the radar. At this moment, Ba is still classified as a Newcastle player in Fantasy games, meaning managers could conceivably, have four Blues players for the double if they choose to load up on Benitez’s side – a very risky tactic, however, given we’ll be wanting Arsenal and West Ham options in our squads immediately afterwards. The likes of Ross Turnbull could also come into the equation, offering us a cut-price short-term keeper option if Petr Cech remains sidelined.

While nothing is set in stone yet, the news at least shakes up our tactics and offers plenty variety to our approaches – undoubtedly good news, given the many identikit RMWCT posts currently doing the rounds.

All eyes on St Mary’s tomorrow afternoon, then.

IF (and it is a big if) this second DGW goes ahead, is it worth taking 2 consecutive 4-point hits to ensure 10 DGW players over the 2 weeks?

It would mean doing Enrique > Azipilicueta and Michu > Lampard in GW22 (to have 4 DGW with Puncheon & Mata)

then Lampard > Walcott and Pienaar > J Cole (as a wild punt) in GW23 (to have 6 DGW with Cazorla, Sagna, Jaaskalainen and Demel)

then wildcard them all out in GW24 and have the same team as everyone else. Good or bad?

i'm actually hoping that this potential DGW goes ahead for two reasons:

    1) i already have 3 DGW players and 1FT to make it 4 players. i might even take a cheeky -4 hit to make it 5 decent players. and my WC stays intact.

    2) other people are ripping up their carefully made plans and are willing to use their WC to beef up for the DGW22 and then look to offload players and take one or two hits for DGW23 and the following fixtures.

purely selfish post this. nothing more, nothing less.

    My proposed Wildcard/DGW Strategy.

I gave myself half an hour of thinking and came up with a wildcard draft that makes a litle sense to me. A decent amount of thinking has gone into this. I will take you through this once you have a look at the team. What i have done is with this strategy one can have a full quota of DGW players for both the DGW's without compromising too much on the long term structure of the team.

The current structure for most of us at the moment is similar to something like this.

    Begovic
    xx xx xx xx xx
    Bale Mata Walcott Michu xx
    RVP Suarez xx

These players, atleast in my current team are my core and are untouchable. So then, i look to fill in the blanks.

    Begovic Turnbull
    Mertsacker Obrien A.Cole Clyne Demel
    Michu* Bale* Mata* Walcott* Ramirez/Puncheon
    RVP* Suarez* Lambert

0.8/1.5 in the bank depending on Ramirez/Puncheon

    DGW1
I go in with 3 Chelsea and 3 Southampton players. Chelsea play Stoke and Southampton and you could rely on Chelsea keeping 1 cleansheet atleast. The only other player i would consider is Hazard and he would come in only for Walcott and i would do the Walcott -> Hazard transfer for the next week, but i have Walcott since about 12 weeks now and would lose value, hence the double up on the chelsea defence. The 3 SOT players pick themselves for me and are potentially the most dangerous players. The decision between Puncheon and Ramirez might be based on money as i want to be bring in Giroud and maybe a Wham midfielder for the DGW or something of that sort.

    DGW2

    Transfers
Lambert + Ramirez -> Ars/Wham players of choice (Currently looking at Noble + Giroud) for a -4. The Giroud thing is a personal call, as you all know, i really fancy him.

With this i get a complete quote of 3 Wham + 3 Arsenal here as well.

Post DGW - No need for wildcard

As long as the structure of
    Mata Bale Michu Walcott
    RVP Suarez

is maintained, the remaining players can slowly be filtered according to how you want your team to take structure. That is why i am thinking Puncheon over Ramirez as it offers more flexibility in terms of the third striker i could want. Mert and A.Cole staying there for some time is not an issue really because both are decent defences.

You could make a case for Azpil but i am really trying to go for players that are as nailed on as can be and if Terry is coming back anytime soon, i'd be worried about owning Azpil/Ivanovic.

A discussion is warranted and i'd like to have your opinion on this proposal.

Nice post. You have a 2nd WC in the back pocket too right, in case things dont pan out this way which is a plus.

I am not wildcarding at the moment. Hence the players i have tried to select are the least prone to rotation.

W have the same front 7 but I also have Ba. Choice of defenders could be the differential over the next few gameweeks. I don't fancy Arsenals defense even though they have A DGW. Looking more a spurs and everton

You will be stuck with three Arsenal + three Westham after the DGW. Need to waste many FTs cleaning up the mess.

Appears to be very similar to my plan except that I'm ignoring Southampton because I don't want any hits. I guess I could get Lambert now and take a hit for Lambert > Podolski.

I'm banking on Azpil keeping his place but I do agree that clean sheets are the best bet for Chelsea (hence having Luiz too).

Very thoughtful post. I had something similar in mind for gw23 and an Arsenal West Ham load-up, but thinking about gw22 as well, the one thing we all have to remember is that not all DGW players are created equal -- a defender might be nailed on but he can also score you a 1 or a 0 quite easily against a good attack, therefore playing 180 minutes to get to the same point.

I would not take hits to load up on dgw defenders, but the WC is a risk to consider for doing so.

    Bang! Finally I have a DGW-WC plan I like.

DGW (3 Ars, 3 Che, 1 West Ham):

    Cerny - Begovic
    Gibbs - Demel - Luiz - Davies - Azpilicueta
    Mata - Walcott - Guthrie - Bale - Michu
Van Persie - Suarez - Podolski

    Then GW24: Luiz > Wilson & Podolski > Aguero

    22- Turnbull, Luiz, Mata, Puncheon

    23 - Gibbs, Walcott, Demel

Other than Cazorla, anyone else seriously worth having? Obviously I've got my quote of Chelsea already...
