As we wave farewell to a Gameweek that failed to deliver the anticipated bounty of points, we assess the lessons learned. How Luis Suarez turns nasty when the goals go missing, how Everton’s recovery could be short-lived and consider whether it’s time to severe ties with treasured assets, with motivation now a key factor.

Suarez turns bad boy when things go awry…
It was all going so well for the Uruguayan. With double figure Fantasy returns in his last three outings, Suarez was flying and had become a fixture in many a squad, providing a hugely viable alternative for those shedding the off-colour Robin Van Persie. Liverpool’s 3-1 defeat at Southampton has put a rather different complexion on matters, however. With the St Mary’s yellow card, Suarez is now just a single booking away from serving a two-match ban. He has to navigate through the next three league outings, avoiding another caution, in order to save himself and his Fantasy owners from an untimely interruption to his season run-in. Significantly, Suarez’s last four bookings have all come in Liverpool defeats so, with Villa, West Ham and Reading to come, perhaps victories will ensure not only goals for Suarez but also a safe path to the April 14 curfew date.

Everton may have re-gained momentum but will struggle to maintain it…
The victory over City continued Everton’s incredible record against the blue side of Manchester and, having threatened to wreck their title hopes last season, this time around the Toffees seem to have applied the final nail in their coffin. Everton’s performance was encouraging ahead of the Gameweek 33 double with QPR and Arsenal although, with both Marouane Fellaini and Steven Pienaar now facing two-match bans, there’s a real risk that David Moyes’ side will lose the momentum gained on Saturday over the next pair of matches. Everton will face Stoke at Goodison and Spurs at the Lane without arguably their key attacking players and, with Phil Jagielka and Tim Howard also absent at the back, arguably the spine of the side will be brittle. This could be good news for those holding Stoke and Spurs assets and curb interest in Everton ahead of their double.

The keeper situation is worsening by the week…
So Mark Bunn picks up a ban and could lose his Gameweek 31 start to John Ruddy. Wojciech Szczesny is kept on the bench and seemingly looks to have lost the jersey to Lukas Fabianksi for the time being. Ali Al-Habsi is dropped to the bench with Joel Robles given a start against Newcastle. Meanwhile Tim Howard, Tim Krul and Pepe Reina remain sidelined. In a nutshell, then, these are turbulent times between the posts, aided somewhat by Asmir Begovic’s clean sheet – his first in twelve league outings. Can we put trust in the Stoke stopper again or should we just shelve our ambitions in the mid-price and jump on Petr Cech, Joe Hart or David De Gea for the run-in? Even with the United man apparently ensconced in behind a rotating back four, there’s even a chance we’ll see some rotation at Old Trafford once the title is sewn up, such is our fortune when it comes to this position.

Old loyalties are being tested…
Forget Robin Van Persie’s run of one goal in six for a moment. How about Theo Walcott’s similar run of no goal in five, Juan Mata’s run of a just an assist in his last four or even Michu’s barren spell of goal returns in one of his last twelve league appearances? Having put faith in these Fantasy mainstays and been richly rewarded for long spells, suddenly the faith is being stretched to breaking point, as previously consistent scorers hit the buffers. In a Gameweek that saw so few heavy-hitters deliver, we can perhaps be philosophical about the failings of these players but at what point do you cut your losses and look elsewhere? Perhaps the willingness to cut ties with established players when they begin to falter is the difference between a good Fantasy manager and a great one.

Motivation and fatigue are becoming key factors…
With Swansea struggling for form after sealing a European spot, Newcastle and Spurs failing after Europa League exertions and City falling flat in their doomed quest to challenge United, suddenly it seems that Fantasy managers have to look to external factors more than ever. Is there a risk that teams without the motivation of a relegation battle or the scramble for a top four finish, suffering from a diminished will to win? While Aston Villa and QPR put on a show that typified the cut and thrust of Premier League football with millions at stake, Stoke and West Brom played out a meaningless 90 minutes almost without incident. As we reach the season climax, it seems we now have to question what’s left in the tank and whether there’s enough at stake to motivate players to perform at their top level and for managers to field their strongest lineups. Failure to consider such factors in our selection policy could be decisive over the run-in.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

So is sticking with the old classics (michu, Walcott, Mata etc) going to be the new differential?

It's patience or dare to switch? The problem with switching is straightforward - As they players have high level of relevant ownership, you tend to have massive falls in ran if they play well but aren't in your team.

Finally figure out three options to get in Cazorla:

    A) Enrique + Michu -> Mertesacker + Cazorla
    B) Zabaleta + Fellaini -> Mertesacker + Cazorla
    C) Zabaleta + Michu -> Mertesacker + Cazorla

It's an interesting analysis, but I'm not sure how well a team-based analysis will translate into an individual player-based analysis.

For example, Michu might still have a lot to play for if he's angling for a move to a bigger club next season (not saying he is, mind)

Just read that: Great article. I am a little concerned that he didn't include fixture strength though. It seems reasonable that the difference between bottom 6 teams and midtable teams through the first 30 weeks could be that the bottom 6 have played more of the better teams so far.

      So the main points are

Midtable teams get slightly less points in the final 8 GWs
Their defences get worse, the attack not so much
Bottom 6 teams get more points in the final 8 GWs
Their defences improve but still are worse than midtable teams

As long as Gibbs is healthy, they'll get rotated. Azpi might even get a DGW on 33.

If you really want an ARS defender for the DGW, I suggest that you get Mertesacker and take Zab out, especially if the Chelsea DGW goes through.

I don't think Swansea's poor form will last personally. They will not like getting beaten, they've had their champagne hangovers now - and could just as easily put a little run together to show everyone what a good team they've become (and they are a good team). Also - will there be some summer investment? There'll probably be a few players that wake up and think, I should start impressing the boss again if I want to stay with him. Just a speculative bit of whimsy - just saying it might not be as simple as them having already checked-out of the season... could be some death throes yet. Reaction this weekend is my bet.

Evening all, I haven't really given a damn about team value so far this season and don't plan on doing so. So taking that into account, when would be the best time to play my wildcard with this team?

    Szczesny - Boruc

    Evans - Santon - Cameron - Davies - Harte

    Kebe - Walcott - Bale - Snodgrass - Sissoko

    Benteke - RVP - Suarez

2 free transfer this week btw...

Nope, just currently. I'd say he will be the no.1 between the sticks next season unless they buy another keeper which is likely. He's in poor form so has to be dropped whilst Arsenal are playing in cup finals every week now.

Depends on your other keeper. It's a risk worth taking for the DGW, not like Jenkinson/Kosc/Verm are any safer anyway..

Bego, so I am fairly safe. Only risk would be not having 3 arsenal players for the double, and wasting a transfer. Would be double painful if Sczcesney regained his place before the double. I cant fit 3 attackers in anyway, so a defender is a must for my plans especially with 1 of the games being vs NOR.

    Miguel Perez Costa.

In the last two GWs, Michu has had 6 shots in the box, second only to Benteke, Rodriguez, and Cisse who are all on 7. He has hit the target 0 times.

To me, he is still getting chances, but his accuracy has gone way down. I will definitely keep for at least the next two, mostly because (a) fixtures aren't terrible, (b) he is still getting shots and he should improve on his 0% hit rate, and (c) there are no real alternatives that are screaming in his price bracket.

Was suggesting Jenkinson as a good punt last week, a combination of Sagna's injury and his dispute with the club regarding a new contract makes me think there's a reasonable chance Jenkinson could become first choice til the end of the season, though there's always the risk of each featuring for one game in the DGW. Sagna is widely rumoured to be leaving at the end of the season, allegedly PSG.

Regarding the inevitable question of whether Fab or Jenks is safer, Szczesny has been dropped for Fab while Jenks came in due to an injury so that's +1 to Fab. However, I think it works the other way too. Sagna is not in a good physical state and has looked weak since his recovery from the broken leg. Aside from his awful form (when not playing in a role like CB where mobility is less crucial) this reduces his chances of reclaiming his spot whereas obviously Szczesny is physically fine.

I would bring Fabs in if you have Bunn on the assumption that Bunn is going to lose his spot soon and there's very few other budget GK options aside from Mucha who also is short term and inferior DGW coverage.

No clear update of a timescale, just the usual pre match conferences confirming he's out. I think his body is shot to pieces. Edging towards retirement. Course if he recovers and Wenger inexplicably feels he wants to stick with Sagna we'll just have to look on in horror.

I think personally that it'd be great if he left Jenks and Fab in. It's freshened things up and it probably took the Bayern home loss for Wenger to realise you can't keep flogging a dead horse. In many ways it would have been nice if he'd been this open to rotation earlier on in the season; not for FPL but for Arsenal's sake.

If a player is slacking and making mistakes they should get dropped/rested/rotated eventually. It's great to see Verm finally getting a wake up call by getting dropped. Same goes for Chesney who I think has been underperforming this season.

You need that hunger and I think Jenks and Fab will be eager to prove themselves and thus help the team's performance overall.

If you currently have either, i'd keep them. But if you want to get one in, wait till the end of GW 32. I'd then lean towards Fabianski if he started GW 31 and 32.

Think Monreal is first choice but Gibbs will take enough of his gametime for it to be a concern. We were going to sign Monreal in the summer but brought it forward due to Gibbs' injury. He's already an integral part of the team. Gibbs is too capable to stay on the bench every game to season's end though IMO.

Well it all comes down to Ruddy's return, if Ruddy conveniently comes back in the next 2 weeks then it would be bad for Bunn as once Ruddy is back in I don't see Ruddy getting dropped. But I would also be relatively optimistic too if Bunn comes back that he wouldn't just be instantly dropped.

    The team
    Bego Bunn
    jevans turner davies
    Mata Lamps Walcott Bale (Siss)
    RVP Sturridge Lambchop
    bench: harte, cameron

2 FT . Thinking of ignoring the defense and doing Mata to Santi. I believe Che will win in the FA cup and won't get a double . Can my defense cope with it or I must work on that too. 2 FT and next week will come handy when the situation will be more clear no?

I like this move. Mata in danger of Rafatation before FA Cup game + he may have a blank soon. Keep another 2 FT, it will be priceless in the next 2GWs

I got no clue what to do this gw. My team need sorting out badly, but I don't want to "waste" a transfer on a non-dgw player, so I think I'm just gonna hold on and hope for the best.

Thank God for that. Hopefully the whole set will burn down and they'll stop making the horror of a show.
