As we wave farewell to a Gameweek that failed to deliver the anticipated bounty of points, we assess the lessons learned. How Luis Suarez turns nasty when the goals go missing, how Everton’s recovery could be short-lived and consider whether it’s time to severe ties with treasured assets, with motivation now a key factor.

Suarez turns bad boy when things go awry…
It was all going so well for the Uruguayan. With double figure Fantasy returns in his last three outings, Suarez was flying and had become a fixture in many a squad, providing a hugely viable alternative for those shedding the off-colour Robin Van Persie. Liverpool’s 3-1 defeat at Southampton has put a rather different complexion on matters, however. With the St Mary’s yellow card, Suarez is now just a single booking away from serving a two-match ban. He has to navigate through the next three league outings, avoiding another caution, in order to save himself and his Fantasy owners from an untimely interruption to his season run-in. Significantly, Suarez’s last four bookings have all come in Liverpool defeats so, with Villa, West Ham and Reading to come, perhaps victories will ensure not only goals for Suarez but also a safe path to the April 14 curfew date.

Everton may have re-gained momentum but will struggle to maintain it…
The victory over City continued Everton’s incredible record against the blue side of Manchester and, having threatened to wreck their title hopes last season, this time around the Toffees seem to have applied the final nail in their coffin. Everton’s performance was encouraging ahead of the Gameweek 33 double with QPR and Arsenal although, with both Marouane Fellaini and Steven Pienaar now facing two-match bans, there’s a real risk that David Moyes’ side will lose the momentum gained on Saturday over the next pair of matches. Everton will face Stoke at Goodison and Spurs at the Lane without arguably their key attacking players and, with Phil Jagielka and Tim Howard also absent at the back, arguably the spine of the side will be brittle. This could be good news for those holding Stoke and Spurs assets and curb interest in Everton ahead of their double.

The keeper situation is worsening by the week…
So Mark Bunn picks up a ban and could lose his Gameweek 31 start to John Ruddy. Wojciech Szczesny is kept on the bench and seemingly looks to have lost the jersey to Lukas Fabianksi for the time being. Ali Al-Habsi is dropped to the bench with Joel Robles given a start against Newcastle. Meanwhile Tim Howard, Tim Krul and Pepe Reina remain sidelined. In a nutshell, then, these are turbulent times between the posts, aided somewhat by Asmir Begovic’s clean sheet – his first in twelve league outings. Can we put trust in the Stoke stopper again or should we just shelve our ambitions in the mid-price and jump on Petr Cech, Joe Hart or David De Gea for the run-in? Even with the United man apparently ensconced in behind a rotating back four, there’s even a chance we’ll see some rotation at Old Trafford once the title is sewn up, such is our fortune when it comes to this position.

Old loyalties are being tested…
Forget Robin Van Persie’s run of one goal in six for a moment. How about Theo Walcott’s similar run of no goal in five, Juan Mata’s run of a just an assist in his last four or even Michu’s barren spell of goal returns in one of his last twelve league appearances? Having put faith in these Fantasy mainstays and been richly rewarded for long spells, suddenly the faith is being stretched to breaking point, as previously consistent scorers hit the buffers. In a Gameweek that saw so few heavy-hitters deliver, we can perhaps be philosophical about the failings of these players but at what point do you cut your losses and look elsewhere? Perhaps the willingness to cut ties with established players when they begin to falter is the difference between a good Fantasy manager and a great one.

Motivation and fatigue are becoming key factors…
With Swansea struggling for form after sealing a European spot, Newcastle and Spurs failing after Europa League exertions and City falling flat in their doomed quest to challenge United, suddenly it seems that Fantasy managers have to look to external factors more than ever. Is there a risk that teams without the motivation of a relegation battle or the scramble for a top four finish, suffering from a diminished will to win? While Aston Villa and QPR put on a show that typified the cut and thrust of Premier League football with millions at stake, Stoke and West Brom played out a meaningless 90 minutes almost without incident. As we reach the season climax, it seems we now have to question what’s left in the tank and whether there’s enough at stake to motivate players to perform at their top level and for managers to field their strongest lineups. Failure to consider such factors in our selection policy could be decisive over the run-in.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

This threat cry's out for a legal discussion topic................hmm.........RMT?

    DDG, Bunn*

    Enrique, Zab, Martin, Clyne*, Harte*
    Bale, Walcott, Lampard, Sissoko, Michu*
    RVP, Sturridge, Lambert

    2FT
    2.7m bank

Not too sure where to go here. Would like to sell Michu but no idea who to get instead. Also Harte and Clyne may be under threat of rotation. Would value anyones opinion on the matter greatly.

RDG, wba, DGW. Not a bad option I suppose. I do hate doubling up and Reading were solid against United. But I guess Arsenal will have a lot more to play for than United with a CL spot on the line.

United weren't just pushing for the attacks tbh. Reading wasn't the reason why there was only 1 goal in that match. I'd do the move.

Hi Ryan, it's good to see our faith in Sturridge paid off (kind of) this week!

I'm getting Santi in and going for the double Arsenal attack I think. The fixtures are just so tasty and I think Cazorla will score well. I'm not so bothered that I've already got Wally.

Michu will stay for me until GW33 as I have more pressing matters, such as Bunn and Szczesney.

Yeah so far not too bad. He still owes us a bit more though.

Santi is a good option but I don't mind holding Michu for one more game (in the hope that his form turns) in which case I'd just use one of my 2FT's on a defender. But yeah Michu -> Caz seems 'sensible'

There's no rush to sell Michu IMO but the right move now could pay off. As Mark says in the article, "perhaps the willingness to cut ties with established players when they begin to falter is the difference between a good Fantasy manager and a great one."

That doesn't mean it's automatically the right move though.

He did in the past but it seems he plays a different role for the team now Cahil has gone.

Is it just me or does your team's kit on FPL have really rank looking sweat patches?

I agree that Puncheon is the obvious candidate to go from your team but looking at it, there's not much you can do with £1.3m and 1FT.

I'd probably save it and see what you can do with 2FTs. You will know a lot more about potential DGW targets next week and will be able to make a more informed decision.

Mata and Bale might have a blank if Chelsea beat United in the cup (not sure how likely it is) and so selling Mata would be a good way to raise funds and upgrade Puncheon, allowing you to simply bench Bale.

It's a tough one actually. Saving is the sensible move but Cazorla vs. Reading instead of an out of form Michu is tempting.

Am I right that you have 2 FTs?

I'd normally say wait a week as it's not urgent but the rest of your team looks good (apart from Bunn, which is non-urgent).

Puncheon > Maloney isn't a bad move if you're stuck how to use the FT. He will come in handy later down the line with his DGW.

Since everyone else is doing it...

    Bunn* Szczesney*

    Enrique Zaba Martin Wilson Harte*

    Wally Bale Michu* Sissoko Puncheon*

    RVP Studge Lambert

    2FTs. £5.4m bank.

I want Cazorla for sure, probably this week ahead of REA, wba, NOR/EVE

I'm thinking of keeping Michu until GW33, when I will get a DGWer in, probably Fellaini.

I'm not sure what to do with my GKing situation. I'm thinking of risking going without one this week and then reassessing next week. Szczesney > Ruddy could work, but I'd like a DGW keeper.

    Any other ideas?

Interesting thought. Even if DDG misses a game or two, he will probably outscore Ruddy.

Whether it's worth the extra cash is what I have to decide.

I don't trust Fergie to be honest. He even rested Evra at the weekend, the first time since GW5.

I guess if Untied have a DGW, I might take a punt on Szczesney > DDG, but it seems sideways and Szczesney could get his place back and DDG be rotated. Arsenal have a nicer DGW too.

Perhaps its a tad risky. But from the looks of things right now, DDG is a far superior option to Szczesney. It depends how conservatively you want to look at it.

I'm hoping Chelsea win too and I can bench Bale in GW33. I have no Chelsea cover either.

I think I prefer Santi since my two problematic positions in attack are midfielders. How would you fit Giroud into my team? Sturridge > Giroud? That would mean I couldn't buy Santi as I want an Arsenal defender and I'm not sure if triple Arsenal attack is too much.

Na, no WC. it only lasted 4 GWs 😆 It's worked out well though!

For what it's worth, I don't think Suarez will get another booking in time for a ban. Almost all of his bookings have come in games where things haven't got his/Liverpool's way. Do you see them stumbling again over the next 3 (as Mark mentions in the article)?

If United knock Chelsea out of the cup, I'll probably look at getting Lampard in. All Chelsea players come with a risk though given the threat of Rafatation

In the UK we cross our fingers and in Germany you press your thumbs. I wonder if it's influenced by Dutch...

Christina. You have to "sacrifice" one of your mids for Fellaini. Was gonna go without him since i figured he'd miss one of his doubles. Of course that plan went sour. Haven't really had time to plan for him, but as it stands it's probably going to be Mata... aargh... even writing this makes me cringe.

Save the FT this week for sure. That way you can decide whether you need to sell Evra (I'd keep him if United have a double) or whether you want to keep Mata (if Chelsea have a DGW)

Michu > Fellaini would work well either way.

Only one decision of make this week really:

    A)Mata
    B)Michu

Honestly can't see Mata starting next week with the UTD replay coming up but he could have a DGW in 33, right?

As for Michu, even if i don't sell him now, he will be out for Fellaini before week 33.

How about you play Mata. If he plays, you'll want him in your team. If not, Michu will come in.

Next week you will know if Mata has either:

      A) A blank in GW33
      B) A DGW in GW33

It depends on the United Chelsea cup game so I'd wait until after that before making any switches.

Hmm this is another option, alhough Mata making a cameo appearance would be disastrous.

Cazorla is the one i want for this week, actually. Sissoko>Caz is another option, i think.

I'm wondering what the best way to take advantage of the United DGW.

I have RVP. I see people getting in DDG, but not a fan of the price or of him as my keeper going forward and not feeling wasting a transfer later on.

    Rafael??

Who else would be worth it AND nailed on for both matches..

What am I going to do with this lot? Trying to make up a 38-point deficit and our teams are basically the same. I have Suarez over my rival, but that's about it in terms of significant assets.

    Begovic Bunn*
    Cameron Clyne Dawson* Davies Harte
    Walcott Michu Bale Sissoko N'Zogbia
    RVP Suarez Sturridge

As far as I see it, Bunn suspended, Dawson injured, Davies and Michu playing in a team that can't be bothered anymore, Clyne and Harte can't keep clean sheets for toffee, Walcott and RVP off-form, N'Zogbia out of favour, Sturridge injury-prone, Suarez a booking away from suspension, Tottenham threatening to do their end-of-season collapse... What am I left with?

    Thinking of this:

    Bunn > DDG
    Michu > Lampard
    Sturridge > Kone

    4-point hit. Thoughts?

Choose one of these options 🙂

    A. Bunn and Sturridge -> Boruc and Berbatov
    B. Bunn and Sturridge -> Boruc and Benteke
    C. Bunn and Sturridge -> Boruc and Giroud
    D. Bunn and Sturridge -> Fabianski and one of those aforementioned strikers 😀

Your other keeper plays, so I'd go for Fabianski.
      Giroud until DGW, then reassess.

With all the uncertainty over Arsenal defenders, do you think it would make sense to have three attacking players (Walcott Caz and Giroud) for GW31-33?

Would most likely recommend it 😉

But which def? Mert offert security but is boring. Monreal, Gibbs and Jenkinson all have the sexy element.

The thing with Mert is that when Arsenal are under pressure and in need of a goal right at the end, Mert gets thrown up front aha

Perhaps the international break sheds some more light on Arsenal's predicted lineup.

I do, although the two fixtures look pretty juicy from a defender standpoint. I won't make that decision until the dust settles on the Arse GK situation.

Yes. Fulham have not been scheduled for that week, and Chelsea losing in the FA cup only allows the Spurs match to go ahead. It does not guarantee that Fulham gets scheduled in that week. There might be other pressures that cause it to be scheduled later. So a Chelsea DGW is speculative win or lose in the FA.
