While I’ve been providing some informal updates on HomeCrowd (our new comments system), I thought it was about time I provided an official update on developments.

We’ve been testing the new comments system behind the scene for a couple of weeks, using it to discuss Scout Picks and other site matters. With a few more tweaks to come, this weekend we should be at the point to allow a number of community members to get access and help us move that testing on.

Ed is worked today on adding inline admin tools (to allow the moderation of comments in the list view rather than via the admin panel) and completed the recent comments widget to mirror the current version. Once these are in place, we’ll be looking for a small group of community members to help offer their assistance.

Testers will see a very similar look and feel to the present system, which is intentional of course, with the notable addition of comment voting, stickies and fixed elements like email notification of replies to comments.

For testing purposes, we will be displaying the comment rating and discussion rating that votes creates – in basic terms, the reputation of a user is added to the comment rating when a vote is cast (or subtracted if it’s a downvote). Discussion ratings are the sum of the comment rating and its replies. We’ll be hiding both numbers when we go live, although we may represent comment rating graphically and users will be able to sort comments by discussion rating in order to view the very best discussions for a given article.

There are new features to be added after this phase of testing, notable profile pages for recalling user comments and replies, the follow function to allow you to filter threads for comments made by your favourite posters and the full sticky comment feature that will list recent stickied comments as “Hot Topics” in the sidebar for easy retrieval alongside the recent comments widget.

These are all features that will be applied and tested in the coming weeks, by which time we will have hopefully got the basics of the system tested and ready for rollout to the live site – with your help.

I’ll be posting details of how you can volunteer to help test HomeCrowd on Friday, in time to let some users loose on the test servers at some point this weekend.

Doesn't everyone realise that if nobody buys anyone before the internationals, then nobody will be forced to make their transfers before the games are played?

      I mentioned earlier - any cliques "helping eachother out" will have rep wiped and frozen. Unless they've reached level two (which will take several weeks of earning positive votes), they'll never know that their rep has been zeroed.
      
      The admin tool tracks and logs every single vote and, for every user, we can see who has voted for them and who they have voted for and how often. Anything fishy will hopefully be spotted quite quickly.

  I don't know, have you read some of Mark's replies on the last page? It seems like it's been pretty well thought out to prevent elitism. The Scouts are always very fair minded and I'm sure will be quietly using their own high reps to boost users who are making good contributions without getting the rep boosts from the cliquier users, as well as balancing out any "you rate me and I'll rate you" type behaviour.

        Perhaps initially it will, but once it beds down a bit it should be less work. For example when we get a flurry of abuse reports about a totally indefensible comment it won't require one of us to rush to the scene as it'll already be voted down.

  The idea is that if anybody comes up with a well reasoned view either way that comment will be upvoted, if a productive discussion ensues then the exchange gets stickied and the lurker will be able to access opinion on the subject without asking the question 5 pages later. It's about making sure quality content remains visible.

  Well, I'm in favour of some kind of system that "rewards" helpful posters.
  
  When I first started playing this infuriating game I had absolutely no idea what I was doing. I found this site and asked a few very basic beginner-type questions - unfortunately I received a whole bunch of sneery smart-arse replies. A couple of people were kind enough to spend some time explaining a few things and I appreciated it immensely. It would be nice to have a way to show your appreciation of those kinds of posters. It may also help to draw out the myriad lurkers and attract more people who may be put off by certain aspects of the format as it stands.

The positive thing I'm taking from this is that if you spend 45 mins combing through the fixtures and building a detailed list of budget rotations for the start of the season, your post might not get lost at the bottom of page 26 with 16 "OMG RVP"s.

      I shall send a reminder. For the start of the season, especially for those of us who go down a cheap defender route and don't want to use too many transfers at the back, it was a great tool. May have been usurped by the RMT tool now, though - obviously we didn't have that at the time.

Assuming there r no international injuries which one of these should I do?

a) Vorm - Harte - Puncheon > Jussi - Jenkinson - Maloney (-8)

b) Vorm and Puncheon > jussi and Maloney (-4)

c) Bunn - Harte - Punchy > Fabianski - R Martin - Townsend

Thinking a or c

A - jussi has dgwk and so does Jenkinson if plays - I would sort Bunn out after dgwk

C - I deal with bun and Fabianski could potentially have a dgwk if he plays

Personally slightly towards A - what do u think?

  C has most risk reward as all 3 are deadwood, and in potential the returns are superior from your choices.
  
  That said I do like the look of Jenkinson going forward. If Sagna is embroiled in a contract stand off I can see him being shown the door as he's non-essential and has had a very bad and injury torn season.
  
  I don't know if you could take Fabrianski and Jenkinson (rather than Martin) or are you thinking of getting Walcott & Carzola in?

Looking to pick the brains of a few experienced heads round here...

This season post gw6 I stumbled on FFS. A mixture of financial bet with another FPL player in work and pride of course drove me to improve and I did turning a deficit of maybe 60pts a one stage into a lead of roughly 150.

So this was my first time taking it serious...by nature im hit heavy and quick/early on the transfers.

Id be interested to know if you folk have any rules/mantras you live by in FPL?

Entering a 40quid buy in league next year which this year id be in with a chance of winning currently but a friend of mine leading my work league is a bit of an FPL god so ill need my A game and more to win top prize.

  I tend to play with what I like to believe is a healthy distrust if my own judgement. Few, if any hits, fairly conventional 3-4-3, obvious captaining choices, patience. Seems to work well as a front runner strategy, less well if you're playing catch up.

    My big gains coincided with a move to 3-5-2 Power 5 Suarez and RVP when it was vogue on here no one in my league was doing it. Suppose by the same token a turn of form for the majority of these players lately has seen me stagnate.

    I have found half season membership and RMT number crunching particularly useful but have tapered off watching MOTD I need to be all over that like a rash. I did use football first to tape full games and watch them had an inkling towards Taarabt after he appeared in the big numbers watched the game he was shouting over from 35yds enough to convinve me not to buy.

      My only ML is with my bros, we planned on doing it for money but it never materialises, mainly because we're not all taking it too seriously. Although I've really got hooked this season. Just wonder for those 50/50 decisions whether the money thing would have an impact...in terms of playing it safe etc. Maybe if I was neck and neck with my ML leader I'd be thinking...well I better get RVP just to be safe...for instance.

        Yeah but hated doing it, as I knew it would impact on overall position, but I think I had 70 point lead with 3-4 weeks to go, so just covered couple of other guys big players. You obviously can't cover all but you have good idea who is good players in rivals teams.

        yeah, that's a prime example, fair play for winning it but for me not playing for money means you are solely focused on gaining an edge on the game as a whole, which I find fun. Getting players that the masses aren't paying much attention too etc. Maybe that urge wouldn't be as strong if I thought I could lose 300 quid off of that gamble.
        
        But each to their own. The OR isn't that important if you are enjoying the fun of a ML. But that said, a better OR means a better chance you are going to be leading your ML...so they go hand in hand to an extent. But those cover moves are usually ML-related. Interesting the difference in approach, cheers

      I had the wind in my sails hit 2nd in my ML courtesy of a fluke really. I had Aguero captain it switched to Suarez and Fellaini (dont ask) came off my bench.
      
      My rise to that point had been good planning and solid play but theres Mananis element of luck he spoke of above.
      
      When I went 2nd I made another side bet my form has tapered off since and what should be funny could become anxious.
      
      Everyone in the top5 had RVP I read your posting on Rooney but felt my hands were tied how could I do it...ill get slaughtered if he hits big etc so Id say it def clouds the judgement.
      
      Im surprised you dont play for money. Be interesting to know if many big hitters on here dont.

        The irony for me is I won two leagues last year with the guy who introduced me to it 2nd in both and I kept telling him the hits were killing him, but he wouldn't listen.
        Of course this year I had mad hit spell and he is now leading, so can't see many big hitters winning much. There will be odd exception, but it is all relevant to the league you are in.
        As I said above I had to get into top 20000 to win last year, but this year highest ML player is just inside top 200000.

        Yeah, the dynamics are different, I'd be the same if I was in that position but it's interesting how it might deter you from going for an effective differential at times out of fear that you'll fall behind.
        
        I suppose it's the same in FPL as a whole though, going for a differential can be scary if half the FPL world owns certain players that are likely to explode. I guess it's all about timing at the end of the day and with that there is the element of luck. But if you pay enough attention to the stats and form you can make calculated risks.
        
        I'd say the majority on here play for money but it's not really discussed. And it does make it that bit more interesting and competitive being in a ML. For me I just enjoy trying to break into the top 10k or whatever is in front of me, aiming to accomplish that. Like for instance at start it was all about getting into the top 100k, once I broke that it was 50k. But maybe others wouldn't be that interested in that...and the ML brings that extra incentive.
