Fulham’s summer recruitment drive continued earlier this week with the capture of keeper Maarten Stekelenburg from Italian outfit AS Roma. The Dutchman arrives on a four-year deal and is the third new face to sign up at Craven Cottage since the end of the previous season, with midfielder Derek Boateng and centre-half Fernando Amorebieta already on board over the last couple of weeks:

The deal reunites the 30-year-old with Martin Jol – having previously played under his compatriot during a spell at Ajax – and looks a canny piece of business by the London club, with Stekelenburg picked up on a free transfer. His new manager was quick to sing his praises upon completion of the transfer on Wednesday afternoon:

“Maarten Stekelenburg is a fine quality goalkeeper who I know well from my time working with him at Ajax and of course as the Dutch international goalkeeper I have always had an additional interest in his career. I am sure that he will do well here at Fulham in the Premier League. He is a player of great quality and technical ability whose distribution and ability to react quickly and read the game is exceptional; he will be a fantastic addition to the talented team of keepers that we already have.”

The History

A product of the Ajax youth academy, Stekelenburg made his debut for the club back in the 2002-03 campaign, though it wasn’t until three years later that he finally established himself as the club’s first-choice stopper. Over the course of nine seasons in Amsterdam, the six foot five Stekelenburg made 191 league appearances, winning a couple of league titles, three cups, four Dutch Super Cups and two Ajax Player of the Year awards before Roma forked out around €6m for his services in August 2011.

Stekelenburg made 28 appearances in his first term at the Serie A but featured only 19 times last time round as the club finished the season in sixth spot. He has also played 55 times for the Dutch national side and has been his nation’s number one since the retirement of Edwin Van der Saar back in 2010.

The Prospects

The arrival of Stekelenburg looks set to herald the end of Mark Schwarzer’s time as the Cottagers first-choice stopper. With his contract set to expire later this summer, the Australian has confirmed he’s on the lookout for another club as the new boy prepares to oust him between the sticks.

With just eight clean sheets accrued last term – and one in the last nine Gameweeks – Jol’s side were far from reliable at the back. All too often they had to rely on Schwarzer’s heroics to keep out opponents; indeed, with 138 saves and three penalty stops, the outgoing veteran racked up a respectable 135 points in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game – this was second only to Dimitar Berbatov and an incredible 60 points more than Brede Hangeland.

Having seen his side ship 60 goals against in 2012/13, Jol has been quick to address a lack of resolve and with both Stekelenburg and Amorebieta comfortable in possession, the Fulham boss looks to have added a little more composure to his backline for the season ahead.

Certainly, the Cottagers previous lack of solidity means their defensive assets will continue to remain in the low, mid-price bracket across the Fantasy games – while Sascha Riether carries a threat from the right-back berth, Stekelenburg is likely to come into consideration between the sticks for Fantasy managers, with last season’s popular options such as Jussi Jaaskelainen and Asmir Begovic set for price hikes up to 5.5.If the fixture list affords him a cut-price rotation partner for our 15 man squads, Stekelenburg – similar to Schwarzer before him – may very well demonstrate that it’s not just a certain Bulgarian who provides us with Fantasy value at the Cottage.

Hi Andrew, you're leading the FFS league too. I'm 3rd in that and 8th overall. I was number 1 overall after day 1, and when I looked at the chasing pack your team stood out as the biggest threat. We'll played!

The overall leader made some choices that were either flukey or inspired. Good luck for the rest of the game.

        wow,that would be adsoulutly brilliant

Rooney is 10 times better player than RVP ever will be and that would be big loose for UTD

Fellaini would fit nicely as well

if this transfer happens and if City and Chelsa sign some decent strikers Prem league will be interesting more than ever

with that scenario i can see UTD fighting for 4th place with Spurs and Liverpool

RVP can have all abilities of this world but he just sucks when it comes to pressure and real matches

he didnt do anything in arsenal and after he seen how pathetic he is he decided to jump in winning team so well done to him

True RVP shows in UCL and when he plays for Holland at euro or WC championship

i couldn't care less if he scores 5 goals against poor england teams

but when it comes real thing he can't cope with pressure and he sucks

i blame him cause holland didnt win euro and wc over last 4 years

winning team, yeah. Man City won the title the year before, RVP joins Utd and is widely regarded by respected football people to have played a key role in winning the title back. I would suggest that no RVP last season would've equaled no title.

BTW I have been a big critic of RVP Dutch performances in the past, but he has really stepped it up recently.

i was gutted when you guys didnt win WC cause you deavrsed it

and now we are back to reason why you didnt do it - RVP!

I love him and think he's a class striker. I also think he has been better for Rooney for 2 seasons now. Currently he is far more superior to Wayne, mainly because Wayne lacks fitness. Wayne has been my fav United player for a while but he has lost his touch. I want Moyes to inspire him to get his game back, and i want these 2 to be at their best next season.

Yes he's not the most talented striker the small nation can produce, but i don't think his "invisibility" (well, according to you) is the biggest thing to blame for the Oranje's failures. i'd rather blame the wasteful Robben & VDV for his stray pass to Iniesta in the WC Final. well, it's about opinions and i still think RvP is a quality player, that's all.

Nothing wrong. He strongly believes in something and we are arguing about it.

I don't see anything wrong with it. It was a very decent argument.

there's a difference between a argument and "i will become the cool one by thinking out of the box" attitude.

I may be judging someone, whom i personally know, "But i Did This , I Did That, Why Did You Do, You are Not a Match to Me", isn't a argument at-anysense.
And i only asked it, because he was sensible before. Drastic change startles me, that's all.

Its the character he's being Timon. He doesn't mean it. That comment to Christina was a bit of banter that they have always had. They actually like each other and are doing it behind Sporting's back.

Really tempted to bring in Thomas Ince for the weekend. I have to do my transfers today since I'll be afk all weekend 🙁

Can anyone advise me yay/nay on this? Do you think he's nailed on? Judging by the first game, I'd say England needs more firepower.

Really impressive stats from last season. 20 goals and 16 assists from 51 games. Not too expensive either.

If Dzeko joins Chelsea he'll be around the 30 goal mark come seasons end. More importantly he'll be first name on my team sheet

I agree he is that good but if Dzeko is Mou's priority target then he'll be first choice over the kid. Lukaku is apparently pushing for another loan too.

Barnsley defender Jimmy McNulty has signed a new deal to stay at the club, Sky Sports understands. Centre-back McNulty has agreed a one-year extension to keep him at Oakwell.

Now that is a kick-ass name for a footballer.
