New West Brom boss Alan Irvine continued his summer of restructuring by capturing striker Brown Ideye from Dynamo Kiev for a club record transfer deal. The 25-year-old arrives on a three-year contract and, in a clear statement of intent, has been handed the number nine shirt for the season ahead.

The Baggies’ new technical director, Terry Burton, confirmed that the Nigerian international was the club’s number one target for 2014/15, with Irvine moving quickly to improve upon a dismal campaign that saw the midlands outfit finish just three points ahead of the drop zone:

“When I arrived at Albion the recruitment department flagged Brown up as the man at the top of their wish list. It is a fantastic signing because of the quality and the potential of the player. I can see that he really wants to be here and that he really wants to be playing in the Premier League. He’s a dynamic player who likes to get in behind defenders and he has the pace to do so. He gets himself into good scoring positions in the box and if there are opportunities then he will get on the end of them. We’re looking forward to seeing him play for the club and scoring goals.”

The History

A product of the Bayelsa United youth system in his native Nigeria, Ideye helped Ocean Boys to the 2006-07 title after scoring once in five appearances. Snapped up by Swiss outfit Neuchatel Xamax in January 2008, he managed double-figures in both full seasons at the club, delivering 22 goals and 16 assists in 50 league appearances before making his way to French club Sochaux.

Ideye made a slow start to his career in France. Arriving midway through the 2009-10 campaign, he mustered just two goals in 17 matches before finding his form the following year, producing 15 goals and six assists in 35 Ligue 1 appearances.

Once again, he was on his travels after Dynamo Kiev shelled out for his services in July 2011 and Brown wasted little time in announcing himself to the Ukrainian league. Bagging a brace in each of his first two appearances, he proceeded to produce 45 goals and 13 assists in 107 matches across all competitions before agreeing the deal with the Baggies.

On the international stage, Brown was handed his Nigeria debut back in May 2010 and has since scored five times in 24 appearances for his country.

The Prospects

Brown’s ability to consistently get amongst the goals looks crucial for West Brom next season. The midlands club have failed to replace Romelu Lukaku after the Belgian served up 17 goals on loan during 2012/13 – despite splashing the cash on the likes of Stephane Sessegnon and Victor Anichebe at the start of the previous campaign, they found the net on just 43 occasions, with Sessegnon and Saido Berahino top scorers on a mere five goals apiece.

Standing five foot 11, Brown may not be able to match the physical attributes of Lukaku but he boasts an excellent work-rate and turn of pace, factors that have been badly missed since the Belgian’s exit. Given that Irvine has splashed out £10 million for the 25-year-old’s services, it’s fair to say that Brown can be expected to lead the line for the upcoming campaign, with his experience in the Champions League and on the international stage affording them vital quality up front.

Understandably, Fantasy faith is a little low in West Brom right now. Last season’s 16th place finish hardly inspires confidence, whilst Irvine’s lack of top-level experience is also disconcerting and may persuade most Fantasy managers to initially steer clear of the Baggies, handing us time to assess their form. So far in the pre-season, Irvine’s preferred formation has been a 4-2-3-1 and, with Brown nailed-on, the likes of Victor Anichebe and Saido Berahino will be hoping to grab a role on the flank in order to stay in the first-team picture.

Coming in at 7.3 in the Sky Sports game, Brown has yet to be added to Fantasy Premier League (FPL) but a ceiling of 6.5 looks the likeliest scenario. The opening schedule hands the Baggies three decent home matches (SUN, EVE, BUR) and a trip to Swansea in the first six and suggests Irvine’s team could get off to a steady start. If they are to prosper and avoid the troubles of 2013/14, the Nigerian’s contribution in the final third looks crucial.

It’s not often you would hear both ‘power’ and ‘creativity’ to describe a footballer... but Alexis is a true all-round attacking threat
Alexis' final World Cup game was a perfect example of his versatility. In Chile’s unfortunate second-round defeat on penalties to Brazil, he started as a right-sided forward, attempting to sprint in behind the opposition defence. From that position, Alexis scored Chile’s equaliser.
But after an hour, coach Jorge Sampaoli removed Eduardo Vargas, a similar player to Alexis, and put on Mauricio Pinilla, an old-fashioned central striker. Alexis' role changed, and he switched from an outside-right position to an inside-left role, collecting the ball deep, linking midfield and attack, looking to play through-balls. Indeed, his neat one-two with Pinilla led to the striker thumping against the bar in the dying moments of extra-time.
Alexis showed he can play either role - he can be the Thierry Henry, or the Dennis Bergkamp. Power and creativity.
Alexis' adaptability owes much to the fact he’s played different roles in different types of sides at a young age. He impressed at World Cup 2010 as tricky winger in a very direct Chile side which pressed high up the pitch, but the following season he was voted Serie A’s best player in an entirely different role. His Udinese team played on the counter-attack, and Sanchez was a No 10 playing behind Antonio Di Natale, powering through the centre of the pitch.

Alexis Sanchez in action for Chile
Then came his transfer to Barcelona. Now, Alexis was again a different player, forced to adapt to a side based around Lionel Messi, told to start wide and make runs in behind the opposition defence - and sometimes used as a No 9. Alexis was often a great attacking threat, but it always felt as if his game was restricted.
At Arsenal, Alexis' versatility means he can be used in very different ways. He could play on the right flank, particularly as Theo Walcott waits to return from a serious knee injury, but he’s also an alternative, or an accompaniment, as a centre forward to Olivier Giroud.
Wenger has been a master of changing a player’s role... think how Henry was converted into a centre forward, or how Kolo Toure became a top-class centre back
They are polar opposites - Giroud is tall, strong, good in the air and static with his positioning, moving towards the ball to link play. Alexis is short, quick, a mazy dribbler and extremely direct. They could form a fine partnership should Arsène Wenger use 4-4-2 as an alternative to the usual 4-2-3-1, as happened twice at Wembley in last season’s successful FA Cup run.
According to Alexis himself, it’s his style of play at Chile that will be most applicable to his new club. “Arsenal plays very well, which fits my style. That is why I moved here,” he said. “Arsène Wenger's style of play is the sort of style the Chilean national team has, so therefore I am used to it.”
Wenger has been a master of changing a player’s role upon their arrival at Arsenal - think how Henry was converted into a centre forward, or how Kolo Toure was brought back to become a top-class centre back - and he’ll be delighted by Alexis' all-round skill set, because there’s so much to work with.
Alexis has played differently for Chile, Udinese and Barcelona - who knows how he’ll play for Arsenal?

Since I realized Gerrard scored more than Sturridge last season and is priced way less, I used that to free up some funds while still having Pool attack and getting in RVP. Guess I can rotate those cheap forwards and a defender (would do more research to find a 3 way that might work better if I went with this.. though maybe they're fine). Kinda dangerous looking:

    Krul Manonne
    Luis Debuchy Mariappa Vlaar Wisdom
Sanchez Hazard Gerrard Nasri El Ahmadi
    RVP Austin Nugent

Almost works.. El Ahmadi and those two cheap strikers just don't feel that great though do they, even with the rest of it..

So slow at work, making me think too much about my team.

Yes but you can't honestly say 3/4 Southampton players are worthy of being in a squad hoping to challenge for the title. Liverpool have spent horribly so far IMO

Just hope Southampton invest the money well.

Lallana vs Tadic - I'd say Tadic takes it
Lambert vs Pelle - I'd say Pelle takes it
But if they think replacing Lovren with Vlaar is the answer (facepalm)

Quite a few. Tadic is more skillfull and a better winger, the position he plays for Southampton, the position Lallana played for southampton.
          Lallana is better overall though

What are peoples thoughts on Mame Dioufs prospects? Seemed to do well in Germany and even set a few up. Sounds perfectly suited to Stoke, and only has an ageing Crouch and Cameron Jerome for competition, along with some great starting fixtures.

Sounds like a decent punt to me!

Aren't they both likely to play wider though? Walters primarily played right midfield for Hughes last season and Bojan I guess plays anywhere along the front three, but I can't see Hughes playing Bojan as a lone striker, can you?

I think they'll set out like this:

        Diouf
        Arnautovic - Bojan - Odemwingie
Diouf is quite tall as well, so the "old" stoke style that some players may still be used to wouldn't be completely ineffective.
But Walters, Crouch, Jerome, Bojan, Odemwingie are all competiton for that ST spot.

Filipe Luis - Cameron - Chester - Mariappa - Wisdom [Azpi a better shot than Luis by chance? And Chester/Mariappa/Wisdom nailed on?]
Ramsey - Mata - Eriksen - De Jong - Sigurdsson
Rooney - Diego Costa - Pelle

I'm doubling up Chelsea for the first couple of gameweeks. Post that, I plan to remove Luis for a 5.0m defender while upgrading Costa into Sturridge... thoughts?

Giroud is pants. No way he keeps Cazorla out of the team. I think that was Wenger's main fascination with bringing Sanchez in... to play up top as Wally did the majority of the 2012 campaign. May not start that way but I guarantee you if Giroud starts shanking chances like he did last season Wenger will have no patience for it.

Wenger mentioned he sees Alexis as a complete forward.

Can see both of these alternating depending on the game:

      Alexis
      Santi/Poldi/Ox - Ozil - Walcott

      Giroud
      Alexis - Ozil - Walcott

But Alexis should definitely get a run out there. If he does well, he may keep the spot.

Think he said a "modern" forward. Whatever that means...

Walcott said something about teams fearing him and Alexis on the wings.

Alexis said Ars play similar to his Columbia side where he played more as a forward though.

Honestly, I have no idea. I think he will be mostly on the wing, but have games as ST as well. Could see him and Ozil/Caz swapping around in games they start together.

If he plays ST, as an Ars fan, I'll still think we have a hole to fill on the left wing. We don't have a natural one (he's not a natural one either, but has played there).

I saw some of that. I think it's going to be even more important to get off to a good start this season, because there is no DGW, so any success can be built upon - rather than having to restructure the whole squad for GW2.

Certainly some safe bankers upfront, but the defence is a little threadbare. I also don't like that keeper combo (though it's popular). Good captaincy choices, overall a good team.

Cheers, Reedy. I don't expect as many defender points this season. There's just so much good value in the midfield that it's hard to ignore. Maybe I can go without RVP, but I want that versatility in funds. Biggest punt is Sanchez, obviously but I expect some kind of quick returns from him. Worst case I'll do a double switch in GW3
