New West Brom boss Alan Irvine continued his summer of restructuring by capturing striker Brown Ideye from Dynamo Kiev for a club record transfer deal. The 25-year-old arrives on a three-year contract and, in a clear statement of intent, has been handed the number nine shirt for the season ahead.

The Baggies’ new technical director, Terry Burton, confirmed that the Nigerian international was the club’s number one target for 2014/15, with Irvine moving quickly to improve upon a dismal campaign that saw the midlands outfit finish just three points ahead of the drop zone:

“When I arrived at Albion the recruitment department flagged Brown up as the man at the top of their wish list. It is a fantastic signing because of the quality and the potential of the player. I can see that he really wants to be here and that he really wants to be playing in the Premier League. He’s a dynamic player who likes to get in behind defenders and he has the pace to do so. He gets himself into good scoring positions in the box and if there are opportunities then he will get on the end of them. We’re looking forward to seeing him play for the club and scoring goals.”

The History

A product of the Bayelsa United youth system in his native Nigeria, Ideye helped Ocean Boys to the 2006-07 title after scoring once in five appearances. Snapped up by Swiss outfit Neuchatel Xamax in January 2008, he managed double-figures in both full seasons at the club, delivering 22 goals and 16 assists in 50 league appearances before making his way to French club Sochaux.

Ideye made a slow start to his career in France. Arriving midway through the 2009-10 campaign, he mustered just two goals in 17 matches before finding his form the following year, producing 15 goals and six assists in 35 Ligue 1 appearances.

Once again, he was on his travels after Dynamo Kiev shelled out for his services in July 2011 and Brown wasted little time in announcing himself to the Ukrainian league. Bagging a brace in each of his first two appearances, he proceeded to produce 45 goals and 13 assists in 107 matches across all competitions before agreeing the deal with the Baggies.

On the international stage, Brown was handed his Nigeria debut back in May 2010 and has since scored five times in 24 appearances for his country.

The Prospects

Brown’s ability to consistently get amongst the goals looks crucial for West Brom next season. The midlands club have failed to replace Romelu Lukaku after the Belgian served up 17 goals on loan during 2012/13 – despite splashing the cash on the likes of Stephane Sessegnon and Victor Anichebe at the start of the previous campaign, they found the net on just 43 occasions, with Sessegnon and Saido Berahino top scorers on a mere five goals apiece.

Standing five foot 11, Brown may not be able to match the physical attributes of Lukaku but he boasts an excellent work-rate and turn of pace, factors that have been badly missed since the Belgian’s exit. Given that Irvine has splashed out £10 million for the 25-year-old’s services, it’s fair to say that Brown can be expected to lead the line for the upcoming campaign, with his experience in the Champions League and on the international stage affording them vital quality up front.

Understandably, Fantasy faith is a little low in West Brom right now. Last season’s 16th place finish hardly inspires confidence, whilst Irvine’s lack of top-level experience is also disconcerting and may persuade most Fantasy managers to initially steer clear of the Baggies, handing us time to assess their form. So far in the pre-season, Irvine’s preferred formation has been a 4-2-3-1 and, with Brown nailed-on, the likes of Victor Anichebe and Saido Berahino will be hoping to grab a role on the flank in order to stay in the first-team picture.

Coming in at 7.3 in the Sky Sports game, Brown has yet to be added to Fantasy Premier League (FPL) but a ceiling of 6.5 looks the likeliest scenario. The opening schedule hands the Baggies three decent home matches (SUN, EVE, BUR) and a trip to Swansea in the first six and suggests Irvine’s team could get off to a steady start. If they are to prosper and avoid the troubles of 2013/14, the Nigerian’s contribution in the final third looks crucial.

It's been one disaster after another. Caulker and Siggy would have been massive for us. I do like the Campbell signing a great deal as I think he will fit very well into Pulis' system - I like his work rate and he seems like a prototypical Palace player. I was sure that we would sign a left back before the season began but I have not seen us linked with anyone really so I am beginning to worry a bit.

Paulo Ferreira and Del Horno were not attacking
Ashley Cole BECAME less attacking by Mourinho's hand also
Ivanovic and Azpillicuea only ventured over the halfway line occasionally last season - hence the low low number of goals shipped

Felipe bombs forward a lot I believe
If he DOES get in, then Chelsea awesome defence record will be compromised
I see very little to gain from picking him for FPL

centre back v full back bonus debate.

i'm gaining an increasing sense on the site that it's not just a case of full backs being back on a par after last season, but they're actually now wearing the trousers. from asking the question this seems to revolve around 2 main tweaks in the bonus system. one is an entirely new addition (points for dribbles), the other is due to making crosses worth 1 point each rather than 1 per 3 (despite everything basically tripling in worth too).

here are some figures from last season. sorry members robin hood's in the house. last season there was no reward for dribbling yet punishment for being dispossessed. the defender who got dispossessed the most last season was theophile catherine @ 1.6 times per game. of players who are still in the premier league it's luke shaw and kyle walker @ 1.3 times per game. you needed to be dispossesed 3 times to lose a point last season. therefore it wasn't just a case of dribble bonus didn't exist to reward defenders but there was never really a genuine punishment either. getting -1 would have been extremely rare for a defender. no reward & no punishment last season becomes both reward and punishment this season as it only takes one of each to get on the scoreboard. even if 1 point means less this season it's still a point which would have been zero last season.

let's see who might be best off this season. i'm choosing a ratio measure so taking hazard for example who was the most prolific dribbler in the league his 3.8 successful dribbles per match is weighed up against being dispossessed 2.3 times per match, leaving a ratio of +1.5. i'll just do defenders here though. drib = successful dribbles per match, diss = number of times dispossessed in a match. ratio = difference between the two. oh and CBIs from before is clearances, blocks and interceptions.

    http://i.imgur.com/hbp2qgP.png

so as expected this is full back dominated. i didn't even bother going further down than players who have made less than 0.5 successful dribbles per match as the effects just seem so minimal, you're not even rounding up to a single dirbble point. overall the numbers look so minor too, it's only really coleman, johnson and shaw who look like racking up multiple dribbles based on last season and each of them is then losing at least a point per match (on average) leaving a ratio of under 1. in fact coleman and billy jones are the only two in the entire league whose ratios could be rounded up to a single point. a single point in amongst strikers getting 24 points per goal and all players getting 6 points just for playing 60mins! i'm sure there will be extremes in odd matches but overall it just seems so meh. dribble bonus looks like one for the midfield and forwards, there are some quite interesting figures, for example rooney and adebayor were well into a negative ratio.

moving on to crosses. based on last season i'm fairly sure it's successful crosses only. a few games near the end of the season i was tracking kolarov's bps and couldn't understand them not jumping up 1 point when he reached 3 open play crosses, then it still didn't at 4, then still not at 5. only answer in my head is it has to be successful crosses (other potential point losing actions weren't happening simultaneously to cancel out the crossing point i was anticipating).
i thought about doing another ranking but it's almost a case of what's the point? it's now a point for every cross rather than every 3 crosses. likewise though it's 1 point for every 3 CBIs rather than 8. another issue is baines was the only player in the league who averaged more than 1 successful cross per match (40 in 32 apps, kolarov probably would too if his start ratio was higher). so the figures are so minor again. minor enough to make the extremely valid argument that full backs are more likely to do CBIs than centre backs are to do crosses a bit meh. (sorry to use meh again i genuinely couldnt think of a better word at this hour).
if it's any cross full stop then that could be a bit of a game changer.

my conclusion: centre backs are still wearing the trousers, full backs may have been given a nice pair of hotpants this season though to pull back some of the defecit.

Cheers for the info AB. To me though, the difference to me is that there is no longer any bonus points sharing. The days where a CB gets an auto 2 or 3 bonus points with every clean sheet seems to be over. In a 0-0 game you may have 2 of 4 CBs getting the 3 and 2 bonus points but if there is a goal scored by a striker in a 1-0 win that could automatically push the CB of that team down to 2 points even in a tight win.

don't agree with this at all. first of all, cbs were never guaranteed bonus in a cleanie (unless it was 1-0 or a 0-0). Secondly, yeah the forwards are getting 24 bps for a goal, but then again the defenders get 12 bps for a cleanie.

Last season it was 8 for a forward goal and 4 for a cleanie so it's the same ratio

Also, forwards will see a lot of deductions in bps too. the -1 point for every shot off target seems to be overlooked

Same ratio but the numbers will be so much higher and thus much more variable so there will be VERY few ties. So many times last season there were two, three, even four players sharing bonus points in 0-0 or 1-0 games. IDK - we'll see how it shakes out - but I still think that we should be picking our defenders based on highest likelihood of clean sheets as always.

pretty sure it's any cross instead of successful cross ( despite evidence you provided against it, just gut feeling). I'm gonna take the gamble and go with a few full backs. if i'm wrong the WC will sort it out whenever i pull the trigger

Nice info on the successful dribbles and dispossession btw.

couldnt leave without a ridiculous analogy. higer bps numbers meaning less ties looks the main area CBs will be hit *because* they are still wearing the trousers. if there's a nightclub giving out free baps inside the centre backs are at the front of the queue, however the bouncers are now letting less people into the nightclub this season. if you have an assist however (full backs more likely) this will act as a VIP badge to let you skip the queue

To me most full back will get more bps than CB this season due of cross and creating chance

However most dribbler will likely to get tackled a lot as well. Being tackled will get -1

To be honest, I'm still having trouble with this new bps system. I can't decided what formation I'm going to use.
