With the international break affording us time to reflect on proceedings, we roll out the first in a series of three members articles. Starting with the defenders, we assess some of the standout contenders across the first three Gameweeks of the 2014/15 campaign.

So if RVP is injured/not match fit. Wouldn't this be the best lineup?

      You would think but:
      A) LVG still likes to play 3-5-2
      B) Mata isn't good on the wing
      C) Rooney will complain about playing in midfield.

      1. 4vets

        Nice options. I'd go for A, B & C:)

There's just no way Rooney can complain about playing attacking midfielder, with the likes of RVP and Falcao in the team.

Do I need to find a way to get Aguero in over the next few weeks as I have no city coverage (Dzeko will be leaving) and he seems the most nailed + highest scoring potential when fit? Could do with another captaincy option too.....(have Sigs, Fab, Rambo, Sterling, 4.5, Roon, Costa, Dzeko)

City is a rotation/injury/form minefield I'm avoiding til GW6. Last week's result appears to back that up as a good approach. Hopefully a good target will be clear in three weeks.

Yep. Aguero is the best thing ever to own when fit. He looked reallyyyyy good to me in their friendly against Germany. Seems to be back to his early-last-season days. I'm going to wait two weeks until after their UCL and tough games are out of the way and if he's still fit bring him in for GW6

    Krul

    Lovren - Naylor - PVA

Di Maria - Fab - Rambo - Sterling - Siggy

    Aguero - Costa

    What say ye?

Wouldn't say it's worth sacrificing the 3rd striker, now that Falcao and Welbeck have joined the rather large amount of good options

I'm avoiding Man U til they get out of the relegation battle. 🙂 I dont' care how good their individual players are, they have got to start playing like a team and scoring a few goals first.

So, I'd leave DM for now and strengthen elsewhere

      1. Miracallas
        • 13 Years
        11 years, 3 months ago

The other option is Di Maria to Boyd giving me up to 9.4m for a 3rd striker. Problem is there's not really anyone in that range I like.

    4. WHY ALWAYS MESUT?
      • 12 Years
      11 years, 3 months ago

I'm in essentially the same line of thought.

Our front 7 is the same apart from ADM - still debating between him and Silva for that last spot. Tempted to go ADM though just because it gets me united coverage.

Alternatively, also thinking of putting Tadic in there and using that extra money to strengthen the defense with Baines in there.

Only worry is having no option on the 3rd striker though... Would've liked to fit in Naismith somehow.

Personally I think that United will line up like this:

    http://lineupbuilder.com/?sk=4f32p

Di Maria will be deployed in the "Robben" role. Has all the qualities to succeed in that position: good first touch, good finishing and is not afraid to run at a defence.

RVP and Falcao would be rotating for the position next to Di Maria, which was filled in by Van Persie at the World Cup. However, considering RVP's current form I think there is no way he would start over Falcao.

Mata and Rooney would rotate for the 10 spot. I've opted for Rooney in that position considering the way Sneijder was forced to play in the World Cup, in that role. Surprisingly, Sneijder was the player in the National team that covered the most ground in the majority of the games, and a tremendous work rate is not something that Mata is known for.

Now for the central midfield roles. The way I've seen this formation being deployed by LvG, you need one box to box midfielder who has qualities going forward but can also nick a ball off a defender when required. The midfielder that is next to him should be a ball retriever, a player who's only focus is to avoid counter attacks and potential build up play. I think that this role is best performed by either Carrick or Fletcher, but I've decided to put Fletcher in there as he seems to be favoured by Van Gaal.

The wing back positions are filled by Valencia on the right and Blind on the left. These players run up and down the pitch for 90 minutes. That's the reason that I've gone for Blind atm over Luke Shaw, as Shaw's fitness has been criticised publicly by Louis van Gaal. Blind has played this role before and knows exactly what to do and where to be. The other wing back position is taken by Valencia. This has to be a hard worker and Van Gaal likes attacking players in this position (Janmaat and Dirk Kuyt).

The defence seems fairly obvious, a left footed player as left centre back. And a right footed one on the other side. The weak link in this defence is Evans in my opinion, but he will have to do for now. De Gea is the obvious choice in goal.

    1. Davido989

4-3-3 suits United so, so much better.

      1. Wouter
        • 11 Years
        11 years, 3 months ago

Might be so and they have the ability to do so in game when it is not working out. Van Gaal did this with the Dutch National team as well. Blind would move into the midfield, Rojo as a left back with Rooney on the left wing and Di Maria on the right, or one of the midfielders would be subbed out for a left winger.

I'll eat my own weight in Toblerone if that's the line up.
      For a start, I don't see Dimaria playing in a top 2.
In fairness there are umpteen possibilities and there are fitness issues so we not see a true line up anyway.

May seem like I'm slagging off Liverpool but tripling up is a bit much for me, missing Ramsey but otherwise very good.

I would be open to dropping Moreno as Liverpool are poor at defending, but Sterling and balo will score a lot. Been trying to squeeze Rambo in, but don't want to lose Cesc or Sterling.

I'd downgrade Moreno, also get Moore over Hutton(poor fixtures for 7 weeks or so).

Is there a ballpark figure on how much to roughly spend in defence?

I have 24m in defence and I think that's pretty average on here, add 2m for a big hitter

Want to get Sterling in.. Should I do

    Ramsey > Sterling FT

    Or

    Caulker > £4m
    Lamela > Sterling -4 hit ?

    Thanks

guessing he needs to do 2 to free up the cash for swap.
everyone has ramsey..and are going for both ramsey + sterling either way both should get points - but liverpool have the easier fixtures.

im thinking ramsey to di maria.. for myself

Yeah would need the cash. Don't know if it's worth the hit..

Can't see Ramsey doing much over the next couple of GWs and would like to give Lamela another week. Could be a good differential.

The 2nd one, but you could wait a week. Caulker + Lamela could give a decent score next week, and you'd have 2FT to get Sterling in next week. Only risk is Sterling bagging a hattrick vs Villa

Can someone please advise on the best replacement for El Ahmadi (4.4) ? Will his price continue to drop?

    I currently have 3.1 ITB with 0 FT 🙁

Been playing 3-4-3 for the first 3GWs. Recently bought Naismith in for Jovetic last week to enjoy the price rise!

So now I am thinking of rotating Naismith & the 5th mid going forward.

Any suggestions would be very much appreciated. Many thanks

Keep CLyne, Caulker and Debuchy as my back or switch any out?

Which two of these are the best shouts over the next 4-5 gameweeks?

    Sturridge/Falcao/Costa/Aguero

    Just saw Falcao at 11...

I think that is very very reasonable.

Yeah, I'm going to monitor him for now though, pretty happy with Diego Costa and Agüero.

Tadic still 7.5? If so he rotates well with Naismith & almost playing oop

I wouldn't be averse to seeing how he'd do with a few big names in a team, solid defence with some real attacking talent, could be great!
