Ronald Koeman has wasted little time in continuing his restructuring of the Southampton first-team squad by snapping up winger Eljero Elia on loan from Werder Bremen. The deal – which also affords the Saints an option of making the move a permanent one – went through in the first minute of the winter transfer window, though doesn’t come without controversy after the player caught the headlines for a number of off-field incidents.

Koeman has moved quickly to play down the Mario Balotelli comparisons and has insisted that, once the new boy gets his fitness up to speed, he’ll be handed the opportunity to establish himself at St Mary’s:

“If I had doubts about his private life I wouldn’t sign him. It’s the press and rumours, it’s not true. We need really good players who want to develop themselves and be professional here. He’s a serious boy and he wants the chance to play football. He has the chance to play football at Southampton. It’s a good step, a big step for him. He’s still not 100 per cent because he didn’t play the last few months. But for the next weekend he will be prepared and he has to take his chance.”

The History

A product of the Den Haag youth system in his native Holland, Elia made his professional debut in 2004 as a 17-year-old and, on the back of six goals and four assists in 60 appearances, was snapped up by FC Twente after falling out with Den Haag coach Lex Schoenmaker.

Under the guidance of Steve McLaren, Elia’s performances enhanced his burgeoning reputation – 16 goals and 12 assists in 83 appearances earned him the accolade of Dutch Football Talent of the Year in 2009 and, having spurned the advances of both Ajax and PSV, signed for German outfit Hamburg in July that year in a deal that cost the club €8.5m.

His time in the Bundesliga was marred by an ankle injury and a period spent on the sidelines due to an infection caused by a poorly-applied tattoo. With his pitch time somewhat limited, Elia managed eight goals and 12 assists in 65 outings before making his way to Italy to sign for Juventus. Five appearances and one season later, he was back on the move after the Old Lady granted him a transfer request. Elia headed back to the Bundesliga with Werder Bremen but a contribution of five goals and eight assists in 68 matches was overshadowed by off-field antics, including social media spats, which ultimately saw him forced onto the periphery.

On the international stage, the winger scored three times in 23 appearances at youth level. Elia has subsequently featured 28 times for the Netherlands senior side and found the net on a couple of occasions.

The Prospects

Initially signed as cover due to Sadio Mane’s Africa Cup of Nations call-up, Elia seems poised to battle with Shane Long for a starting berth after the Senegal international was ruled out of action for the next four to six weeks with a calf injury. Frustratingly for Koeman, Mane’s loss comes at a time when he had finally found his feet in the English top flight and notched in three successive league outings before being forced off against Chelsea on New Year’s Day.

Whilst Elia has the same sort of blistering pace and trickery on the ball as Mane, as the above stats show, he has lacked an end product to his game that is likely to initially deter Fantasy managers. Elsewhere in the Saints’ midfield, Koeman will be buoyed by Dusan Tadic’s recent return to form – the Serbian has a goal and two assists in his last four appearances after a barren autumn period – and with the Saints entering the New Year on the back of a draw with Chelsea and win over Arsenal, there’s reason for optimism at St Mary’s once again.

Certainly, one look at the fixture ticker shows the Saints’ schedule is set to take a significant turn for the better around Gameweek 23. Koeman’s side face four home fixtures (SWA, WHM, LIV, CPL) and trips to QPR and West Brom during that period, but unless Elia can improve upon his consistency, it seems we may be best served to focus on Koeman’s defence with our winter Wildcards, with Ryan Bertrand and Nathaniel Clyne remaining the best bets. Mane’s recent rise to prominence is also worth considering once he’s back in contention, leaving Elia a tough task to cement a place in our future plans.

Hi guys was hoping for some WC advice would be much appreciated

    A) Is there a better 9.2 GK combo than Panti + Heaton?

    B) Who is the best non-Chadli midfielder for 7.1 or less

    C) Who is the best placeholder up front until Aguero's return?

    Thanks in advance!

Nice, I play 5 on 5 sometimes but greedy feckers annoy me. Fifa is full of them

I'm mostly on FUT. Love the building cheap teams and stuff. Walcott as striker is too good.

I haven't. Haven't touch PES since I moved to FIFA on 13. They do 11v11 now? Damn

I was thinking of getting it simply based on 11v11 online. Not sure if I would play any of the other modes though as it doesn't have real names or anything (As fifa has the license)

I have costa, falcao, cavani front 3 at the moment. Rooney bench role for me on UT 😎

Maybe but I've put a load of effort into trading and Messi is still like 2.5m. Might just settle for the best possible pl team.

yeah I would go with a strong team over spending that much on messi/neymar

I have a really strong team rather than 1 amazing invidual, xavi, iniesta, rooney (who I have deployed in cm), fabregas, busquets all in cm

then rooney, cavani, costa, falcao, bony, dzeko, up top

want yaya but he's like 100k

Yaya is worth it. Easily best CAM I played with.

If you're building a PL team or hybrid, try Walcott as RF on striker. With an PL manager. Walcott as Chem 7 striker is too OP. Beats out Falcao, Costa, Aguero easily.

That's a sick front 3. Currently having Schurle, Walcott (7 chem) and Aubameyang. Walcott scores like 2-3 goals every game in online Division 1

TOTY packs coming out, all the kids with buy them thus inflating the market for a certain period of time.

Can expect players to drop around 30% in price

                  Yep team of the year.

FIFA will release the blue cards on packs of the World 11 (or whatever they call it) next week.

People will go crazy opening packs, oversupplyng the market and thus prices will go down massively. Happens every year.

So if you got any expensive player just sell them now and get them back by next week at a much cheaper price.

No worries mate.. The Director, Gaspar Noé, made another movie previous to the above one called "Irreversible", which is also well worth a watch and also very twisted in an interesting way...

I am assuming you have watched the famous ones like Donnie Darko, Mullholand dr., FIght Club, Snatch, Memento, Prestige etc. So will try to mention some less famous ones (comparatively):

Gone girl, if you haven't watched in cinema
              Primal Fear
              Case 39
              Enemy (it's a weird one)
              Limitless
              Arlington Road
              Layer Cake
              Identity
              The Machinist
              Buried
              The game
              Skeleton Key
              Secret window

and of course, Sharknado 😀 😀

Agree 2x, Zombie. Memento and Fight Club are superb. These are repeatable, cult, crazy good movies. For me, The Big Lebowski probably gets thrown in there as well, and 12 Monkeys and Brazil might be in this class, too.

As a Liverpool fan I find 20m for Beharino madness. As and when Sturridge is fit he shouldn't play. And there will probably be more options in the summer.

I say either stump up the extra for Origi now. Or loan in Defoe for the season (Defoe is a similar player with less financial risk to Beharino)

Unless you are a Chelsea city or United who can afford it, 20m should only be spent on someone who is going to be first choice definitely...

      • 16 Years

It means some players will play 2 games in a GW.

So, to be clear, due to changes in the fixtures, some teams may play 2 games within a single FPL "gameweek." Thus, as Christina says, you may have players who have the opportunity to get more FPL points because they merely play more matches within a single GW. Having a wild card to transfer in & out of these double game week players is advantageous. DGWs are not known yet; they arise due to cancellations (weather) or due to other tournament play.

      Anything else to add here?

This ^, is my 13 year old son. Well, not for 63 hours straight. He leaves it on to earn levels with his amobii's.

An amiibo gift from your lover! Now that is some lover. I think my son has about as many as I could get that are released thus far, so about a dozen. Nintendo is his only gaming preference and system (WiiU and 3DS), and the new Smash Bros was game he had been waiting on for a year...His faves by far, so this is his baby, sorta speak. Nice chatting, cigarette smoking man (love that show!), and Pixie man (love that band!).

Frank Black is actually the protagonist of Millennium(little brother of The X-Files) but the name was inspired by Frank Black the singer. (I like the Pixies, though).

Anyway i would love to have a Charizard amiibo but they haven't produced it yet. Dammit!

Of course! I had forgotten that Frank Black was from Millenium, Lance Henriksen's character. Me and the mrs watched X-Files and Millenium during their "live" airings. Loved them; seen them all. We are re-watching X-Files now on Netflix.
