Adrian slots home a spot-kick as the Hammers knock Everton out of the FA Cup. Kevin Mirallas turns on the style with a goal and assist as the Upton Park clash ends in a penalty shoot-out. Elsewhere, Gylfi Sigurdsson is playing through the pain barrier for Swansea, Southampton’s Toby Alderweireld is sidelined for a month, whilst Hull’s front two are ruled up for up to six weeks as the injuries pile up for Steve Bruce.

MARVELLOUS MIRALLAS NOT ENOUGH FOR EVERTON

Roberto Martinez named an unchanged Everton line-up for his side’s FA Cup third round replay against West Ham. Despite having Aiden McGeady sent off early in the second half, the Toffees came from behind through a Kevin Mirallas free-kick, before the Belgian set up Romelu Lukaku to take the lead in extra time. A late West Ham goal forced the match to penalties, where the Merseysiders toppled out of the competition after Steven Naismith and Joel Robles were unable to find the net.

The Scout Says: The Toffees’ defensive woes continue, then, with Leighton Baines and co. having now gone 13 matches in all competitions without preventing their opponents from scoring. At the other end of the pitch, however, a couple of their star performers could be back on the up. The 7.2-priced Mirallas has failed to last more than 45 minutes in his last three league appearances, but last night’s goal and assist showing – allied with McGeady’s dismissal – should bring him back into contention for a starting spot against West Brom at the weekend. Lukaku, likewise, has struggled for league minutes and form of late, and is now without a league goal since Gameweek 14, but will be hoping to kick on after yesterday’s strike. With Crystal Palace and Leicester also in the Toffees’ next five, their attacking assets could be set to profit, with the two Belgians top of the queue for investment in midfield and up front.

HAMMERS EDGE PAST TOFFEES IN SHOOTOUT

Sam Allardyce opted to make two changes to his West Ham starting XI for yesterday’s FA Cup tie, with Matt Jarvis and Alex Song coming in for Kevin Nolan and Winston Reid. Enner Valencia opened the scoring at Upton Park, slotting home from strike partner Andy Carroll’s assist, with Carlton Cole taking the clash to penalties just two minutes after entering the fray off the subs bench. Despite Stewart Downing’s failure to convert his spot-kick, Adrian’s heroics in goal ensured that the Hammers progressed to the next round of the competition.

The Scout Says: With Diafra Sakho still ruled out due to a back injury, the Hammers’ alternative forward options proved their worth at a vital time for the east Londoners. Whilst Cole will likely have to settle for continued substitute performances, Valencia, at 6.4, could appeal to those in search of a short-term option up top, with the Ecuadorian encountering a Hull side at the weekend who have managed just one shut-out in their last six league outings. However, with the Hammers’ following fixtures taking a severe turn for the worse (liv, MNU, sou, tot), their assets’ appeal beyond the upcoming Gameweek looks poor, and having now conceded in each of their last six in all competitions, they’ll be more reliant than ever on their attackers making an impact as Big Sam attempts to keep his team in the top seven.

SAINTS CONFIRM ALDERWEIRELD ABSENCE

Southampton have confirmed that centre back Toby Alderweireld is set to miss up to four weeks with the hamstring injury suffered against Man United on Sunday.

The Scout Says: Given the Saints’ kind schedule across the next month (new, SWA, qpr, WHM), it seems that some Fantasy managers are tempted to invest in the 4.8-rated Florin Gardos as a budget route into their backline. However, there’s a real possibility that the Romanian could start just two league matches before Alderweireld makes his comeback; Maya Yoshida’s international commitments with Japan at the Asia Cup will finish by January 31 at the latest, and though he is almost certain to miss Gameweek 23 (on February 1) through jet lag, he could come back into contention for Gameweek 24, thus making Gardos a very short-term punt. Nathaniel Clyne and Ryan Bertrand remain the safer options, then, with Jose Fonte (5.6) coming in at slighter less than the two full-backs for those looking to free up cash to utilise elsewhere in their winter Wildcards.

TIGERS DEPRIVED OF FORWARD DUO

Hull have revealed that Nikica Jelavic (knee) and Abel Hernandez (groin) could both be sidelined for up to six weeks after sustaining injuries in the Tigers’ defeat to West Brom last Saturday. Steve Bruce’s side may, however, be boosted by the returns of Gaston Ramirez and Sone Aluko this weekend, who both have an ‘outside chance’ of recovering in time for Sunday’s trip to West Ham.

The Scout Says: With Jelavic and Hernandez now set for an extended absence, a number of the Tigers’ other attacking options are in the running to benefit from three great home fixtures in their next five (NEW, AVL, QPR). With Yannick Sagbo clearly out of favour after being handed just 23 minutes of league action this season, our attentions can turn to the ‘out of position’ prospects of the Hull’s midfield. The 4.6-valued Aluko, if fit, looks the most likely for a forward role, though Tom Ince – who earned minutes from the bench last time out – could be fielded furthest forward this weekend if Aluko fails to recover in time. Meanwhile, Ramirez’s possible absence against the Hammers could also see Robbie Brady back in contention for a starting berth.

SIGURDSSON STRUGGLING WITH FOOT CONCERN

Swansea boss Garry Monk has admitted that Gylfi Sigurdsson is currently playing through a pain barrier after sustaining a foot problem prior to Christmas:

“Gylfi is not playing at 100 per cent right now. He is still playing very well, but we have to be mindful because he has missed days of training through the busiest period of the season. He has not been training a lot over the last couple of weeks because of a bruised foot so we have managed that. In terms of his sharpness and fitness, he has not been at his peak but he still dug in and gave a performance against West Ham. We are now looking to get him back to 100 per cent. Hopefully he can get a full week of training and we can go from there.â€

The Scout Says: With Wilfried Bony’s departure looking ever-nearer, it’s clear that Monk regards Sigurdsson as too important to rest entirely right now. The Icelandic international’s minutes are certainly being managed, however, and he has now clocked up just one 90-minute appearance in his last four in the league. Not that that has particularly dented his potential – two goals in that period is as many as he managed in the first 16 Gameweeks of the season. Nonetheless, with Chelsea, Southampton and Man United in the Swans’ next five, the schedule is anything but easy, and Sigurdsson’s 44% ownership now face a tough dilemma over whether or not to stick with the former Spurs midfielder.

West Brom manager Tony Pulis is reportedly keen to offload Georgios Samaras and bring in Blackburn Rovers striker Rudy Gestede.

Samaras should try and join another PL club

Captain choice is tricky. Aguero could be a differential altogether, Di Maria will find it tough at QPR, Sanchez is in form, but it's Man City, and does Chadli really have it in him for a big return. Tempted by John Terry.

    Thoughts?

          Good for him.

There's 4 attacking spots in the team.

Alexis is nailed on, one of Giroud/Welbeck will start every game, Ozil (as much as I don't really rate him) will play virtually every game as he was a big money buy.

That leaves Walcott, Ox, Cazorla all fighting for one spot.

              Tough one.

I'd love De Boer but we'd have to wait until summer for him which wouldn't necessarily be a bad move, but he could then still turn us down. Same with Galtier.

Ashley won't pay compensation for anyone so it's Garde (not convinced on) or Carver till the end of the season.

I think Ashley will stick with Carver as long as we don't look like getting dragged into a relegation battle.

I know what you're saying, but normally a stepping stone would be going upwards. he could well win us our 5th title in a row (never been done in the Eredivisie). Going from a European giant with regular CL football to a midtable PL team would be crazy.

I know the quotes that have come out but I'd take them with a pinch of salt.

He hasn't got us to the knockouts of the CL yet. Very close last year despite the group of death (which we get every year).

There is a lot of optimism that we will get there again. We are fortunate that we don't get totally destroyed by tv money due to the youth system constantly producing top talents for the first team.

A couple of years previously it was looking like he would get a big move but with injuries and quite a big loss of form we were lucky really that we got rid of de Jong at all! For me last season he didn't deserve a place in our midfield, and he'd be no where near the team if he was still here

Maybe not, depends what other offers he gets in the summer.

He's talking about us as a big team and how he'd consider it so I don't think it's totally impossible (unless he gets offered a top job).

I think Carver will have the role indefinitely (until someone's hand is forced). It's the cheapest option and that's always going to appeal to Ashley so long as we stay above water. Depressing but true.

We have to accept where we are. Aside from about 5 teams, every other team in Europe is a selling club. We should work around that the way Continental clubs do. i.e. invest in youth, focus on playing style, use big sales to boost the previous 2

And I reckon it'll be Wally that has that spot most of the time. Rotation I feel will be between Özil and Cazorla given Özil's fatigue issues.

The Ox will return to mostly sub appearances.

            Giroud

            Sanchez Özil Walcott

And I'd agree with you, I do to a certain extent, but the issue is that a CL place is not guaranteed this season for Arsenal. I think the focus will be on finishing top 4 instead of the CL so we'll probably see that team line out very frequently.

A 100% Walcott is a definite starter for Arsenal, but he is very, very rusty. Won't dribble with the ball, and has missed 3 very easy chances in 2 games.

Who would you ditch out of those? Would be one of Dummet/Hutton maybe? Would you say its better to double up on Southampton and bring in Clyne? Or opt for a City defender?

I would ditch Dummett because of Newcastle's manager situation. I would pick a player that is 100% nailed on, Soton double up could work well.

    I will try again.

I'm using my free transfer to get Aguero in and it's a straight swap for Rooney or Costa. With RVP possibly out Rooney is on penalties, would likely be playing higher up and those fixtures are also mouth watering. Is it crazy to keep Rooney over Costa until I play the wildcard and re-evaluate?

i thought this.. rooney is bound to brace now ive pulled him out for aguero..

looking at rooneys stats mind hes been awful this season fantasy wise

the way you should look at it, once hes pushed back deeper again even if he does well in next few weeks and gets pushed up, aguero will be hot property, you wont be able to afford him and you'll be stuck with a deep playing rooney gathering hardly any points with no ideal replacement and hitting yourself for not getting aguero earlier by taking the gamble to sacrifice a few points (thats all ifs and buts in itself, aguero could easily outscore rooney over the next few games)

I'd go Aguero, you'll have to take your team apart to get him if you wait

Not really a foregone conclusion that i understood wrong, thats my logic behind the move 😛 I was tempted to keep rooney too but costa delivers a goal or an assist even when hes playing shite, always seems to nick something. If i were to pick united i'd rather go with Carrick or ADM in midfield combined with a cheapy like Kane/Austin over Rooney this season

I'm in a strange position of not knowing what I'd change on my WC outside of my defence - albeit I'm in a very template position.

Hazard - Sanchez - Siggy - Silva (Boyd)
    Aguero - Austin - Kane

I would do Siggy > Chadli, but in Feb that could backfire. Silva is tremendous value and I expect he'll tick over the way Fabregas has in the first half the season. The alternative is getting Costa, but as long as Austin and Kane are firing it seems like a waste. Any suggestions?

Guys is it pointless to double up on WBA and Sunderland defenders as I would only really play a back 3 or could it work alongside 2 budget midfielders? So maybe 1 week you would play a 4-3-3? Just seems too risky playing a defender over a midfielder and relying heavily on 1 team for a CS.

Not Pointless, i agree not to play them over midfielders in most cases. But PVA and wisdom are so cheap it doesn't cost you anything to have them and they provide excellent bench cover at the price.

In WC next week. Thinking about 3rd defender(Also have Terry and Bertrand and 2 cheapies)
    A) Koscielny (Arsenal has nice fixtures coming after Chelsea)
    B) Clyne (also have Bertrand and Forster so triple too much but well, they have most cs?)

    D) Cheapie as 3rd def (Wisdom?) so can afford upgrade Chadli to Fabregas or ADM

Kosc is a decent punt but Ars are still battling defensive injuries so I don't think they will be as resilient as last season.
Clichy is a rotation threat but playing really well and he will get the lions share of game time imo. Plus he gets 90 or none at all so thats why we have a bench.

No way. I dont see the reasoning really . Costa a reliable souce of goals, top scorer and also playing for thebest team in the prem so no clowns around him. He can only get better as he gets more experience in the prem

    Please RMWCT

    Foster Myhill
    Terry Clyne Hutton PVA Wasilewski
    Hazard Sanchez Fabregas ADM Albrighton
    Kane Aguero Austin

I'm not sure if I should downgrade Terry - Do we think Chels Def is essential? Thinking I might double up on SOT??

Also thoughts on Austin? Tempted to switch to Berahino or Ings?

    Thanks All

GW27 forward lines could be interesting with the likely blanks.

might end up being the opposite of using the wildcard prior to a double gameweek and using it to avoid big hits to team. Im personally going to phase players out in preparation and hope for a double gameweek soon after to draft the heavy hitters back in. *fingers crossed*

I can't see him being priced over Austin/Beraniho, would he even be likely to start?

I remember last season I panicked and ended up over planning with the double gameweeks.

I think it is good to have a few players who play twice, but taking -4's and sacrificing good players that play just the once backfired on me. I think my DGW players did nothing and the player I transferred out scored a few.

I don't think people in my ML pay much attention to the double gameweeks, I'm certainly not going to panic myself over them as much as I did last season.

So, Maloney to Leicester. Worth a thought if at a decent price?

the problem is will u play him over any of your front 7? a player is only a bargain if u play him and he scores the points.

if he is 5.5m and u left him as 5th mid he is of no value.
