Adrian slots home a spot-kick as the Hammers knock Everton out of the FA Cup. Kevin Mirallas turns on the style with a goal and assist as the Upton Park clash ends in a penalty shoot-out. Elsewhere, Gylfi Sigurdsson is playing through the pain barrier for Swansea, Southampton’s Toby Alderweireld is sidelined for a month, whilst Hull’s front two are ruled up for up to six weeks as the injuries pile up for Steve Bruce.

MARVELLOUS MIRALLAS NOT ENOUGH FOR EVERTON

Roberto Martinez named an unchanged Everton line-up for his side’s FA Cup third round replay against West Ham. Despite having Aiden McGeady sent off early in the second half, the Toffees came from behind through a Kevin Mirallas free-kick, before the Belgian set up Romelu Lukaku to take the lead in extra time. A late West Ham goal forced the match to penalties, where the Merseysiders toppled out of the competition after Steven Naismith and Joel Robles were unable to find the net.

The Scout Says: The Toffees’ defensive woes continue, then, with Leighton Baines and co. having now gone 13 matches in all competitions without preventing their opponents from scoring. At the other end of the pitch, however, a couple of their star performers could be back on the up. The 7.2-priced Mirallas has failed to last more than 45 minutes in his last three league appearances, but last night’s goal and assist showing – allied with McGeady’s dismissal – should bring him back into contention for a starting spot against West Brom at the weekend. Lukaku, likewise, has struggled for league minutes and form of late, and is now without a league goal since Gameweek 14, but will be hoping to kick on after yesterday’s strike. With Crystal Palace and Leicester also in the Toffees’ next five, their attacking assets could be set to profit, with the two Belgians top of the queue for investment in midfield and up front.

HAMMERS EDGE PAST TOFFEES IN SHOOTOUT

Sam Allardyce opted to make two changes to his West Ham starting XI for yesterday’s FA Cup tie, with Matt Jarvis and Alex Song coming in for Kevin Nolan and Winston Reid. Enner Valencia opened the scoring at Upton Park, slotting home from strike partner Andy Carroll’s assist, with Carlton Cole taking the clash to penalties just two minutes after entering the fray off the subs bench. Despite Stewart Downing’s failure to convert his spot-kick, Adrian’s heroics in goal ensured that the Hammers progressed to the next round of the competition.

The Scout Says: With Diafra Sakho still ruled out due to a back injury, the Hammers’ alternative forward options proved their worth at a vital time for the east Londoners. Whilst Cole will likely have to settle for continued substitute performances, Valencia, at 6.4, could appeal to those in search of a short-term option up top, with the Ecuadorian encountering a Hull side at the weekend who have managed just one shut-out in their last six league outings. However, with the Hammers’ following fixtures taking a severe turn for the worse (liv, MNU, sou, tot), their assets’ appeal beyond the upcoming Gameweek looks poor, and having now conceded in each of their last six in all competitions, they’ll be more reliant than ever on their attackers making an impact as Big Sam attempts to keep his team in the top seven.

SAINTS CONFIRM ALDERWEIRELD ABSENCE

Southampton have confirmed that centre back Toby Alderweireld is set to miss up to four weeks with the hamstring injury suffered against Man United on Sunday.

The Scout Says: Given the Saints’ kind schedule across the next month (new, SWA, qpr, WHM), it seems that some Fantasy managers are tempted to invest in the 4.8-rated Florin Gardos as a budget route into their backline. However, there’s a real possibility that the Romanian could start just two league matches before Alderweireld makes his comeback; Maya Yoshida’s international commitments with Japan at the Asia Cup will finish by January 31 at the latest, and though he is almost certain to miss Gameweek 23 (on February 1) through jet lag, he could come back into contention for Gameweek 24, thus making Gardos a very short-term punt. Nathaniel Clyne and Ryan Bertrand remain the safer options, then, with Jose Fonte (5.6) coming in at slighter less than the two full-backs for those looking to free up cash to utilise elsewhere in their winter Wildcards.

TIGERS DEPRIVED OF FORWARD DUO

Hull have revealed that Nikica Jelavic (knee) and Abel Hernandez (groin) could both be sidelined for up to six weeks after sustaining injuries in the Tigers’ defeat to West Brom last Saturday. Steve Bruce’s side may, however, be boosted by the returns of Gaston Ramirez and Sone Aluko this weekend, who both have an ‘outside chance’ of recovering in time for Sunday’s trip to West Ham.

The Scout Says: With Jelavic and Hernandez now set for an extended absence, a number of the Tigers’ other attacking options are in the running to benefit from three great home fixtures in their next five (NEW, AVL, QPR). With Yannick Sagbo clearly out of favour after being handed just 23 minutes of league action this season, our attentions can turn to the ‘out of position’ prospects of the Hull’s midfield. The 4.6-valued Aluko, if fit, looks the most likely for a forward role, though Tom Ince – who earned minutes from the bench last time out – could be fielded furthest forward this weekend if Aluko fails to recover in time. Meanwhile, Ramirez’s possible absence against the Hammers could also see Robbie Brady back in contention for a starting berth.

SIGURDSSON STRUGGLING WITH FOOT CONCERN

Swansea boss Garry Monk has admitted that Gylfi Sigurdsson is currently playing through a pain barrier after sustaining a foot problem prior to Christmas:

“Gylfi is not playing at 100 per cent right now. He is still playing very well, but we have to be mindful because he has missed days of training through the busiest period of the season. He has not been training a lot over the last couple of weeks because of a bruised foot so we have managed that. In terms of his sharpness and fitness, he has not been at his peak but he still dug in and gave a performance against West Ham. We are now looking to get him back to 100 per cent. Hopefully he can get a full week of training and we can go from there.”

The Scout Says: With Wilfried Bony’s departure looking ever-nearer, it’s clear that Monk regards Sigurdsson as too important to rest entirely right now. The Icelandic international’s minutes are certainly being managed, however, and he has now clocked up just one 90-minute appearance in his last four in the league. Not that that has particularly dented his potential – two goals in that period is as many as he managed in the first 16 Gameweeks of the season. Nonetheless, with Chelsea, Southampton and Man United in the Swans’ next five, the schedule is anything but easy, and Sigurdsson’s 44% ownership now face a tough dilemma over whether or not to stick with the former Spurs midfielder.

Are people prepared to sacrifice their defence to fit in both Costa and Aguero?

Maybe 1 big hitter than just budget defenders to make up the rest?

i've taken -32 in hits - most through injury. Worked out I'm still a net 50+ points ahead even including bench rotation.
only dubious hit was front loading midfield & attack against xmas rotation which left me about even as there wasn't much rotation/resting of my players.
never worried about taking a hit. nothing more frustrating than having a player contributing nothing.

Since Brendang Rodgers did a U-turn and stopped playing possesion-football and started playing attacking football in December Liverpool has:

30% more shots on target than the 2nd team on the list
Lowest minutes per chance of all teams
2nd most shots inside the box just behind City
    Top 5 big chances created

In that same period Sterling, Coutinho and Gerrard are all very high on all stats-tables when it comes to big chances, chances created, shots on target etc..

Originally I planned to go for Gerrard on my WC but his little knock has made me go for Sterling for now.. also considering Coutinho though.. any thoughts?

If not an of the midfielders then I think it would be wise to have a Plan B on how to get Sturridge into the team with these stats

Yeah Southampton away is very though and maybe City at home, but I think it will be goals in that game.

The 4 gameweeks before that are pretty nice though

You need to be careful of that lot. Of them all, Coutinho the only one worth investing in at this moment.

Sterling, in 8 matches, has 1 goal and 2 assists. Not terrible but not worth scrambling for, in fact, his returns were better at the start of the season. Stevie G, similarly in 8 games, has 3 goals. Coutinho has 1 goal and 3 in the last 8 but he missed one of those games and his returns have actually improved in the last 5 GWs or so.

And may I just add on, you are not interpreting the stats completely.

2nd most shots inside the box just behind City
        Top 5 big chances created

You may see that as good, and it is in certain respects but it tells you much more. Liverpool are not finishing their chances. At all. So would you be rushing off to buy players who are getting chances but can't finish them? I will wait and see how Sturridge does.

So you would go Coutinho instead of Sterling? I have been tempted by that.. but then I have more money which I don't know where to use..

Well they are in the top 4 for goals scored also since the tactical change by Brendan, and their conversion rate has moved to top 8 from almost the very bottom earlier in the season

IF I was going to get one, currently it would be him. Purely based on Sterling's returns, I prefer him when he plays behind the striker.

When exactly did the tactical change occur? Because I'm interested by the goals scored part, I will look that up.

So then, tell me this, who is scoring the goals? Because it isn't Sterling, Coutinho or Gerrard (though he's gotten the most.) That would be worth finding out, as far as I'm aware Stevie G is their leading goal scorer on 5.

It started at the 0-3 game against United, so the last 5 gameweeks.

Since then Liverpool are 3rd for goal scored in the last 4 gameweeks and 5th for the last 6 gameweeks, can't find for the last 5 gameweeks in rmt

Yeah that is the problem, same problem as with choosing United-players, assists and goals are shared

                Interesting certainly.

This is it, there is nobody dominating and unfortunately at the moment they are very very shared. Regarding United, given the constant changes in play and formations, I think only ADM is worth owning any more.

Probably right, but the underlying stats are interesting for Sturridges return at least, the 2nd top scorer last season for the team that has created the most chances in the last month

Do yourself a favour and don't overload on the stats 😉

Studge had a different striker partner last season, an amazing one. He has to adjust as well and the injury has prevented him doing so. You want your strikers getting lots of chances so that is really good news for him but first and foremost, you want him 100% fit. Then we worry about how many chances he'll get.

Aye, I'm just trying to account for more recent form but you're bang on. All the chances and shots are great but at the end of the day, if he isn't finishing and getting goals then he's not worth having.

Stats means nothing regarding Sterling, fact shows he's been poor point wise for a long time. Surprised so many still holding on to a heavy hitter priced mid who delivers points like a 5th mid.

Part of it was to do with last season when Suarez was setting him up a good deal and in general being excellent. There was this belief in pre season that somehow Sterling would further exceed last season and really dominate. I didn't buy it. He's done grand and will do better when they have a striker but people were expecting Bale like returns from him which isn't fair.

The problem is that last season he wasn't expected to be the main goal scorer, which resulted in him being much calmer infront of goal, but now while Sturridge has been injured he has been the focus point for the whole team.. One of the expert commentators that played as a striker earlier said he remembered it from his own carrer, he was scoring easily for 1-2 season when they had another main striker in the team, but when he suddenly got that job he couldn't score anymore, too much pressure

The pressure has been unfair as well I agree. It was wholly unfair, too much expectation.

The other point I would make is that Sterling isn't a striker, pure and simple. He is the type of player that plays behind a striker very well, he gets some space and can run at defenders. Putting him up top, well it just is an entirely different role and he's not as effective there (Walcott is similar, played striker a bit but is clearly much better on the wing). When they let Sterling drop back again he'll do better I think.

Costa is still bringing in the points but there's no denying his haul has slowed down recently, more specifically since the weather has got colder. I wonder if his game/points will improve as the weather/temperature improves. I know it sounds weird but footballers performance based on conditions sometimes can play a part in this and he has been playing in warm climates for most of his life.

Thoughts? Or am I just completely insane? 😀

Interesting theory - I cannot imagine Spanish footballers loving playing in January sleet.

As a completely random aside, I was playing in a match once where the sleet was horrendous, when our centre half broke several ribs - they were sticking out at a horrible angle. The ambulance took 1/2 hour to turn up and the paramedic said "we can't do much with broken ribs". I don't think I've ever felt so sorry for an injured footballer - he was blue from the cold by that stage.

Anyone else care to give their opinion:-

    1) Siggy/Vergini --> DiMaria/Wasilewski (or any other DF up to £4.3)

    or

    2) Costa/Vergini --> Aguero/Cresswell (or any other DF up to £6.1)

Really only a one week punt as will most likely WC the following week.
