After weeks of negotiations, Norwich finally completed the signing of Hull’s Robbie Brady for an undisclosed fee, believed to be £7 million. The Republic of Ireland international penned a three-year deal with the Canaries and joins Graham Dorrans, Youssouf Mulumbu and Andre Wisdom in making the move to Carrow Road this summer.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Brady spoke of his happiness after dropping a division with the relegated Tigers:

“The feeling of being wanted is something I’m so grateful to the manager for, and to everyone who’s been behind it. It’s another opportunity to play at the highest level, which is where everyone wants to be. I’ll relish it, and will hopefully play as many games as possible. It’s a new chapter for me at Norwich now and I’m raring to go.”

THE HISTORY

Born in Dublin, Brady was spotted by Manchester United scouts playing for local side St. Kevin’s Boys. He joined the club’s academy shortly after his 16th birthday in January 2008, and made his debut for the reserves just months later. Brady played under-18 and reserve team football for the next few seasons, before graduating to the reserves on a permanent basis for the 2010/11 campaign.

The Irishman was sent out on loan to Hull City ahead of the 2011/12 season, and went on to make 39 appearances during the campaign, registering three goals and a couple of assists. Brady returned to Old Trafford the following year but he only managed one senior appearance for United, however, coming on as a late substitute in a cup win over Newcastle in September 2012. An initial loan return to Hull was made permanent in January 2013, with Brady’s four goals and 13 assists in 32 appearances guided the Tigers from the Championship back into the top-flight.

Brady went on to star for the Tigers on their return to the Premier League, scoring three goals and providing one assist in 16 appearances, before undergoing surgery to cure a hernia problem, missing out on the club’s run to the FA Cup final, where they lost 3-2 to Arsenal. Last season, Brady made 27 league appearances, registering two assists, but the Tigers two-year stay in the Premier League came to an end as they finished 18th.

Having represented the Republic of Ireland at under-17, under-19 and under-21 levels, Brady made his international debut in a 4-1 win against Oman in September 2012, scoring once and setting up two of the goals. Brady has since amassed 12 caps for his country, scoring three times.

THE PROSPECTS

Having featured in several different positions for both Hull and the Republic of Ireland, Brady should provide Norwich boss Alex Neil with plenty of flexibility. Speaking about his big summer signing, Neil revealed Brady would primarily feature down the left flank:

“I’m really pleased to sign Robbie. As everyone’s aware, we’ve been chasing him for quite a while, He’ll be an absolutely perfect fit for us. Hopefully he can go on and show everything that we think he’s capable of. He’s dynamic, he’s got good energy to get up and down the pitch, and he’s got a fantastic left foot which makes him a real danger at set-pieces. He’s got a lot of things in his locker. It gives us good competition down the left side.”

In terms of tactics, Neil tended to operate with a lone striker system after taking the helm last year, rolling out 4-4-1-1, 4-1-4-1 and 4-2-3-1 formations. Bradley Johnson shone on the left flank, racking up 15 goals, but with Martin Olsson likely to miss the start of the season after undergoing shoulder surgery in the summer, Johnson has been occasionally fielded at left-back in pre-season. Brady also has plenty of experience in the position, particularly at international level, and offers an alternative until Olsson is ready for action.

The Swede is expected back shortly, though, and his return may well see Brady oust Johnson down the left of midfield. Certainly, he possesses greater pace than Johnson and is more of a natural wide man, with his cultured left foot able to deliver great quality into the box. Alternatively, Neil could utilise him centrally in the role in “the hole” behind a lone striker.

Coming in at 5.5 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, Brady sets you back the same as Johnson and Nathan Redmond, whose place looks secure on the right of midfield. Neil’s words suggest he’ll be handed a fair share of dead-ball duties, whilst Brady will be also hoping to climb up the spot-kick pecking order, having occasionally taken penalties for Hull.

The Canaries have been handed a kind start to their return to the top flight, with their first six home fixtures (CPL, STO, BOU, LEI, WBA, SWA) particularly friendly. Away trips to Sunderland and Newcastle in the opening nine Gameweeks are also reasonable match-ups, so Brady could provide Fantasy managers with a decent budget option. Given that he’s joined with just over a week until the season starts, he may need time to settle into his new surrounds before some consider taking the plunge.

    Morning all,

Seeing as I don't think last nights West Ham game was televised, I thought I'd write a brief match report for you.

Bilic lined us up in a 4-3-1-2 formation, with 16 year old Reece Oxford part of the three alongside Noble and Kouyate. Payet played in the hole with Zarate and Valencia ahead of him.

What was clear from the formation and the way we played is how key our full backs will be in providing width and crosses. I really think Cresswell will be worth his 5.5 tag, and Jenkinson his 5.0 price even more so.

It was also clear how central to how attacks that Payet will be. His ability to thread a through ball or a perfect cross is fantastic, with the latter earning him an assist last night. I can see him and Valencia being particularly effective away from home where they will be able to break into space. Unfortunately for Valencia he picked up a knee injury which looks like he's likely to miss at the very least the first game of the season.

Zarate played well, but I don't see him starting often in the PL so I won't go on about him any further.

Noble and Kouyate were both effective, with Noble seemingly building a good link with Payet.

At the back I was impressed with Ogbonna, but it's hard to call who will partner Reid during the season, as Tomkins was suspended last night. As already mentioned, Cresswell was advancing A LOT and found himself dribbling into the box on several occasions. It seems an active ploy for Noble or Payet to thread the ball inside the oppositions full back into Cresswell.

I think that's enough from a FPL perspective, if you have any questions just ask 🙂

Thanks for that piece. I've got only one question - what's your opinion on Sakho? Is he nailed to start with Valencia injured? How Enner's injury will affect him?

Sakho is nailed regardless of Valencia. He's our only proper goalscorer.

          "He's our only proper goalscorer".

Not true, Guy. You just haven't seen much of Valencia playing as a striker (his proper position) at West Ham because Big Sam almost always played him wide. He's a good centre forward with a very decent goals record (11 in 19 for Ecuador for example).

Bit academic now that he's injured though.

HMmm.... it's true that there are more options on midfield than in attack. Picking Payet may mean not getting Firmino or Depay. Picking Sakho may mean not getting Deeney or Gomis.

If Reid is fit he will be first choice in my view, West Ham not negotiated lucrative contract to get him to stay to leave him on bench. I think Ogbonna will be back up for Reid as both left footed and I think Tomkins will partner Reid to start with as they know each others game from last season. I would love to see Reece Oxford given a chance in Carling Cup he looks outstanding prospect.

what worries me is that they conceded two goals. Should I really go with WH defender? I know they have two nice home fixtures GW 2-3, but is an attacking return really so obvious? or shouldn't judge on yesterday's result, and hope they will keep clean sheets?

I agree it's a risk. But consider that last nights defence included Collins and Obrien to begin with, and the two goals were conceded when our defence had a 19 year old CB at RB and a 16 year old at CB, with a man less in midfield due to the red card.

I was at game also, Valencia big loss but result was best thing that could have happened. Bilic will play weakened side next week and thankfully we'll be out and able to concentrate on prem. I can see Payet creating untold chances for Sakho who will be nailed on to start every game if fit. I have that pairing in FFL. Will be interesting what strikers we sign as needed back up before Valencia injury and I see Zarate more as impact player. Jenks & Cresswell could also provide space for Payet to surprise teams and go through middle also.

6.5 Midfielder playing wide in a front 3 with a very easy opening set of fixtures having racked up 10 or more assists in 4 of his last 5 seasons along with very decent goal output? I'll take that, Thank you very much.
No reason i wont ship him out when his fixtures turn sour

I think he is. The question mark is Mason.

Saw a post by a Spurs fan highlighting that Dier is being trialled as a real option for CDM which would allow Bentaleb to have a more box-to-box role which is what Spurs mgmt seem to think he's suited for.

    Schmeichel - Schwarzer
    Azpillicueta - Koscielny - Francis - Prodl - Targett
Hazard - Walcott - Chadli - Ritchie - King (lei)

Maybe Myhil - Hennessey is better than my current Leicester double up.

I have a good feeling about Ruddy. Above average GK in a below average team = save points (maybe some bonus as well!). Also IMO Norwich are lacking upfront so they have to focus on keeping it tight at the back. Even the season Norwich got relegated they kept 12 CS's.

Nope, if I go 8.5 i'm definitely erring on the side of caution with a double up.

2,0 / 3 - Solid defence, no Ivan and not too sure about Francis+Prodl (tho it's a popular duo here)
2,0 / 3 - Not too sure about Ritchie, King and Chadli
2,5 / 3 - No Rooney, Kane or Benteke to start with?

      6,5 / 10 for me.

yup. there's no need to pair Aguero with Rooney up top imo, too much money tied up there and as you can see, you're already not entirely happy with it.

Also, get one of your 4.0s to a 4.5 at least.

The problem with Mane is that he can't just be the best mid priced option this year, he has to be on the same level as the players priced at 8.5m who play for the top teams and I just can't see him producing a similar level of points to those players.

Possible. Thats whats keeping me from picking him.
But his goals per minute was bettered by only Sanchez from midfielders last season hence its a fair pricing.

Yes he can for the for the first 4 fixtures. Remember we are not selecting players for the entire 38 GWs for now.

Southampton don't score that many goals compared to the top teams so he'd have to be involved in a very large % to be on the same level. He definitely has the potential to do it but I'll need to see it before I buy. The hat-trick skews his stats a little as well.
