Aston Villa’s summer of restructuring continued on Friday afternoon with the acquisition of striker Rudy Gestede from Blackburn Rovers. The 26-year-old becomes the club’s ninth new face of the summer transfer window as Tim Sherwood strengthens up front following the departure of Christian Benteke to Liverpool.

Discussing his move with the club’s official website, Gestede cited the Villains’ attack-minded approach under Sherwood as key to his decision:

”The manager told me I’d bring another dimension to the team because of my size and the way I play. He trusts me and I felt comfortable to sign as I knew he wanted me here. It’s good to be part of his new set-up. He’s still relatively new himself and trying to refresh the team. He’s brought in a lot of new players and I’m thrilled to be a part of it. I love the way his teams attack and play on the front foot. For a striker, I’m going to have chances to score goals. That’s all you want.”

The History

Brought up in Essey-les-Nancy, France, Gestede joined FC Metz’ youth academy at the age of 16, penning a professional deal one year later. He played for their B team for the next five years while notching three goals in 28 appearances for the senior outfit. A season-long loan spell to Cannes for the 2009/10 campaign harvested four goals in 22 outings, before Cardiff City snapped him up in the summer of 2011.

Gestede struggled to impart his influence during his debut term with the Bluebirds, bagging just one goal and three assists across 25 appearances (five starts). An injury that summer found him sidelined for the opening two months of the 2012/13 Championship season. Upon his return, Gestede played second fiddle to the likes of Craig Bellamy and Heidar Helguson, mustering a modest haul of five goals and three assists in 27 appearances (five starts).

In an attempt to secure more regular playing time, Gestede joined Blackburn Rovers on loan in November 2013. He then signed a permanent deal with the Lancashire club in January, before going on to record 13 goals and three assists in 27 outings. His fine form carried over to the previous campaign, when he chalked up 20 goals and four assists in 39 appearances, ranking joint-fourth in the league-wide scoring charts.

On the international stage, Gestede represented France U19s on 17 occasions between 2006-08 but never turned out for the senior side. Called up by Benin in 2013, he has since scored three times in six appearances.

The Prospects

Speaking on Gestede’s arrival at Villa Park, Sherwood lauded the 26-year-old for his eye-catching attacking output last term:

“I’ve known about Rudy since he was at Cardiff City and he is a player I’ve always admired. His goalscoring ratio last season was fantastic and he is someone who certainly knows how to find the back of the net. He’s a big, physical striker but he can play and I’m pleased to welcome him to the football club.”

The former Spurs head coach was clearly in the market for an imposing frontman to fill the niche vacated by Christian Benteke, who won more aerial duels (187) than any other frontman in the Premier League last season. Certainly, Gestede looks the ideal replacement –over the last two seasons, no player in the top four levels of English football has netted more goals from headers.

Villa’s wide men could well prosper from Gestede’s introduction to the starting XI. The likes of Leandro Bacuna (5.0) – who’s classified as a defender but has been fielded on the right flank in pre-season – already piqued our interest with his out-of-position potential and could further profit from the new boy’s arrival. The former Netherlands U21 international ranked second (18) behind Ashley Westwood (23) among Villa’s midfield for crosses, despite clocking only 1044 minutes. With a cross frequency of one every 15.3 minutes, Bacuna could the perfect foil for the ex-Blackburn marksman.

That being said, the possible recruitment of Emmanuel Adebayor offers Sherwood an alternative to Gestede and with Libor Kozak also in the mix, the Villa boss has target man alternatives. Given that Sherwood has utilised 4-3-3 and 4-4-1-1 set-ups over the summer, Gestede has the physical attributes to lead the line as a lone striker, though the Villa boss has also trialled a 4-4-2, which could see fellow new boy Jordan Ayew offer plenty of pace and movement alongside a more robust strike partner up front. Like Ayew, Gabriel Agbonlahor can also operate on the flanks but will perhaps be limited to minutes off the bench in light of Sherwood’s squad overhaul.

Sherwood’s penchant for attacking football may well promote Villa’s main men as viable value options for the season ahead. A weekend hat-trick from Scott Sinclair (5.0 in FPL) has many mulling over his inclusion in our midfields, and if Gestede nail down a starting berth, he may also stake a claim for our Fantasy consideration. Likely to come in around 6.0 – the same as Ayew – in FPL, the former Blackburn hit man has six favourable fixtures (bou, cpl, SUN, lei, WBA, STOK) in the first eight Gameweeks to ease him into his new surrounds.

Bamford worth a punt before a gw4 wild card? Away to Norwich and home to Aston Villa is not bad at all, and can be benched in the Arsenal game.

Most on here are backing Palace to have a great season and to get loads of attacking points.
Most on here are saying the likes of Puncheon/Cabaye/Bamford are underpriced
Most ppl say dont look at fixtures beyond 3/4 weeks for your attackers(nor ARS AVL)
Most ppl say Spurs are sh!t defensively and so are Man City(GWs 4-6 extremely tough run has MCI and tot)
      No one has Palace attackers...

Moral of the story: Play your own game and take a punt. I'm gonna take a punt on Puncheon/Cabaye mostly though

It's up to who takes most of the set pieces. Last year Puncheon was great at nr.10 role and on set pieces ... what about in preseason? 🙂

I couldn't really tell what Ozil and Ramsey's positions were last night. Who was on the left, who was more central?

Ozil was really quiet. Made a few good runs but wasn't picked out by teammates. Ramsey seemed to disappear at times but as usual, more than made up for it with a few gung ho attempts.

Santi was on the left but kept switching with Ozil

      Rambo played in the middle.

I though Santi and obviously Ox were the stand outs.

But ffs, it's a lottery, can't judge based on one game

Exactly this. It's only one game.

I thought there weren't many standouts. Ox played well and Santi was probably the best of the rest.

    Schmeichel - Hennessey
    Cedric - Williams - Jenkinson - Huth - Francis
    Walcott - Sterling - Mata - Milner - Wanyama
    Costa - Kane - Pelle

+1.0m for Aguero flexy. Could do Mata->Siggy, or Sterling->Mane etc to raise Kun funds. FLEXIBILITY

What do you think? Wouldn't captain Haz if I had him so probs not worth the cost. May get Marshall if he comes in at 4.5

Really? All 3 score 10+ Goals almost every season. Southampton great fixtures with Pelle who finished in the top 4 overall for strikers last season the main striker. Benteke who was scoring goals for fun in an awful Villa team now at a better team and Lukaku who is proven in pl. Thanks for your opinion. I just don't agree

    Team currently:

    Schmeichel
    Koscielny - Shaw - Francis
    Hazard - Sterling - Cazorla - Mane - Chadli
    Rooney - Sakho

    Fabianski - Huth - Bassong - Rantie

Cazorla vs. Ozil or Ramsey is such a headache.
I have gone for Mane + 4.5 Fwd vs. Pelle + 4.5 Mid.

    Thoughts?

Rooney (avl), Hazard (mci), Walcott (cpl) depending on form.

Not the greatest choices but it's a bit silly to have a player simply to captain them in a particular GW IMO

Is it just me who thinks Wally was the worst player in our team in that game? I've had him all preseason but fact is he is a fringe player and needs to perform to hold his spot. Ox completely overshadowed him.

Wally is a huge issue. He is simply not an out and out striker and Giroud suits out style a lot more. We have more quality at our disposal to use on the wings and Ox is still only 21 yet not far of Wallys level, he is already more skillful. I am starting to feel like maybe we should have sold Wally.

Talk about 0 to 100 haha. Community Shield is an interesting thing to watch from a Fantasy perspective but it's not the be all and end all.

Wenger has stated he will use Walcott as a striker depending on the opposition and why not, has played well there overall thus far. Obviously his favoured position is out wide and I can see him nailing down that right wing spot when he is not playing striker.

            • 14 Years

For a fringe player like Walcott it is very important he makes the most of an opportunity like the community shield.

Walcott will certainly play striker from time to time. Can't at all see him nailing down a wing spot long term. Here's a brief look at our options on the wings

RW - Sanchez, Ox, Wally, Ramsey
LW - Sanchez, Ox, Cazorla, Ozil, Welbeck

No one will nail down a wing spot bar Sanchez.

If you think Walcott is a fringe player that's fine. But he has been brilliant in pre season, what else can he do to earn a spot?

Sanchez has always played left wing. Then it leaves Ox/Wally/Ramsey for RW. Ramsey is more of a CM so I can't see him being deployed there over the other two. Ox can also play centrally whereas Walcott is an out and out winger.

I would look into downgrading in def and leaving money ITB for Kun/fixing Mahrez if he fails etc

Could do. Regarding Kun, though, I have two downgrade options: Walcott and Pelle. Depending on form/nailedness.

Can't see him losing his place for now, 5.5m, attacking .... whats not to like?

I agree, but what's not to like is obvious is it not?

Debuchy could easily start in front of him. He is not 100% nailed on.

This.. rather Mertesacker atm. though even if Bellerin is benched for a game or two he could outscore Merte with his attacking threat till the first WC. Plus, you get a defender of the bench for him too

I think it has to be Pelle. Benteke (C) is very tempting for GW2 but their away fixtures are horrible.

Pelle seems to be high on confidence which is a telling factor for him.

Benteke is fixture proof with his new team - so Benteke. Just get in Tadic at 7.0 for Southampton cover. He is on penalties

Hello all. Would be great if anyone could shed light on one of all of these..

Are the following players nailed on for starts?

    A) Shaw
    B) Vardy
    C) Mata
    D) How long is Bertrand out for?

    Thanks!

Walked away a few days ago and now made what I hope to be my final operation. But I'm still open to changing my third striker. Its deciding between: Sakho / Berahino / Deeney / Wilson

    Ruddy Butland
    Azpi Merte Williams Francis Baker
    Hazard Walcott Ozil Tadic Surman
    Rooney Benteke 6.5

        hey there big boy.

Yeah dude, Deeney seems like an absolute steal at 5.5 but Berahino is also on pens and he is EPL proven. I think he will have a break out season. He has only grown in the past two campaigns.

Considering the "'Giggs Boson' All Out Attack chip in GW1 with a GW2 wildcard" play. After the last night's game, how do you think this would go:

    Schmeichel (Schwarzer)

Azpli, Huth (O'Shea, S Taylor, Gamboa)

    Cazorla, Hazard, Sterling, Coutinho, Walcott

    Wilson, Giroud, Lukaku (c)
