Tim Sherwood continued his shopping spree on Friday by securing the services of £8 million box-to-box midfielder Jordan Veretout from Ligue 1 side Nantes. The Frenchman penned a five-year deal and is amongst a raft of nine summer signings by the Aston Villa manager.

The Midlands side fought off stiff competition from Leicester, Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur to pull off the signing and Sherwood was particularly chuffed that Veretout chose to ply his trade at Villa Park:

“I’m really pleased Jordan decided to choose Aston Villa over the other options he had and opt to continue his development with us. He is only 22 years old but he is vastly experienced for someone that age. He has played over 140 games in Ligue 1 and is a really exciting young player. I know he is very highly rated over in France so we are delighted to get this deal over the line.”

THE HISTORY

After joining the Nantes youth side in 2003, at the age of 10, Veretout worked his way up through the ranks to earn his first professional cap in May 2011. However it was during the 2011-12 campaign that the midfielder finally cemented a starting role. As well as playing further upfield, Veretout occupied a defensive midfield role diligently and started all but five of Nantes’ Ligue 2 matches.

In the following two seasons, the 22-year-old filled a variety of midfield roles and was a focal part of the promotion-winning squad of 2013. The chopping and changing of Veretout’s role prevented him from finding any consistent attacking output as he only managed two goals during the 2012-13 and 2013-14 campaigns.

Last season, though, he picked up in consistency and quickly began to be considered one of France’s hottest young talents. The central midfielder enjoyed a purple patch during the first 18 league matches, picking up six goals and five assists. Although that productivity tailed off in the middle of the campaign, Veretout netted once and picked up an assist in the final two fixtures to silence any doubters.

The new Villa man is yet to receive a senior international cap but was part of the side that triumphed in the 2013 Under-20 World Cup. Since then the youngster has moved up into the Under-21 squad, making eight appearances.

THE PROSPECTS

With the likes of Fabian Delph and former loanee Tom Cleverley now elsewhere, Sherwood urgently needed to address his side’s problems in the centre of the park. Having acquired Idrissa Gueye, the Villa boss will be hoping for Veretout to carry a major goal threat in light of his stand-out season in Ligue 1 last term. Likened to Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsey, the new boy is keen to make his mark:

“I am flattered to read that people think I remind them of Aaron. He is a very good midfield player. But at the same time, I am my own player and play my own game. I want to develop here at Aston Villa. I feel I am a player with big activity – I like to be heavily involved in things. I like to be creative – making goals for my team-mates. That pleases me a lot. But, also, I love scoring goals myself!”

Crucially, the Frenchman’s versatility should help secure a spot in Sherwood’s first XI for the season ahead. His ability to fill any central role, be it defensive or attacking, and even occupy a wider position will afford him a higher chance of grabbing one of those starting places. Sherwood has utilized 4-3-3, 4-4-1-1 and 4-4-2 over the summer and the ex-Nantes man could slot into any of those formations. The former two look the most favourable with three central roles up for grabs; Veretout could play in either the anchor or wider positions of a 4-3-3 and in the central roles of a 4-4-2, or even behind the striker, should Sherwood choose to shift Jordan Ayew onto the flank.

Delving into the data, the Frenchman created an impressive 72 goalscoring chances last term, more than new midfield team-mates Ashley Westwood and Carlos Sanchez combined. Furthermore, no Villa midfielder managed more than Veretout’s 52 shots or seven goals last season but, as mentioned above, he can be very streaky, and Fantasy managers may wait for Veretout to hit a purple patch before investing.

A price of 6.0 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game may prove enough of a deterrent for most, though. Scott Sinclair’s weekend hat-trick strengthened his claim as a viable budget midfielder and, at a price of just 5.0, the winger’s current form should ensure Veretout remains under the radar for now.

With matches at home to Sunderland and West Brom as well as trips to newly promoted Bournemouth and Leicester in the opening five Gameweeks, though, Veretout is afforded the chance of impressing early on. Providing he can continue his Ligue 1 form, the Frenchman is definitely one to watch during this term’s opening Gameweeks.

Not paying 6m for Ritchie without seeing him play in the Prem first. Wilson instead of Sakho is tempting to upgrade GKs or Def. But Sakho is a much better prospect for only 1m more imo.

Similar to mine. Although I'm suddenly in doubts concerning Wally. Not sure if he's gonna start vs WHU.

I am slightly concerned too, but I think the reward for the risk is big enough. If I change my mind I'll simply downgrade him to Ozil or Caz.

Going big on the rotation tactic this year. Not my usual approach, and it makes me nervous. Some feedback from some seasoned players would be grand.

    Butland, Ruddy
    Cedric, OShea, Huth, Gomez, Francis
    Hazard / Walcott / Ozil / Sterling / Ritchie
    Rooney / Pelle / Deeney

I think you should buy more value players if you want to rotate. I think your defence is too weak, you basically only rotate your 3th forward with your 5th midfielder. Ofcourse, there is your defensive rotation but that might as well be a lotery. I am thinking about rotating myself, and am currently on:

      0.0 million in the bank!

      Butland - Ruddy
      Clyne - Mertesacker - Cedric - Coates - Huth
      Fabregas - Wallcott - Mane - Chadli - Ozil
      Kane - Benteke - Sakho

I also thought about Lens. And Coates, and or Kane might change, the rest is pretty nailed on in my team. No Rooney could be risky, but Man United have started the last three years very poorly if I remember correctly!

How would you improve this team?

      For you team:
I would consider ditching Hazard and or Sterling. Pelle is a fine pick, hope he starts well. Deeney I don't really know. Have you thought about any midfield enablers?

      1. Lebowski85
        • 13 Years
        10 years, 6 months ago

Thanks for the thorough response. I appreciate the effort! Whats a midfield enabler? I normally go for a strong eleven and budget bench to begin with....Im going to try and utilie my bench more I guess is what I mean by rotation. I like to see a player with guaranteed points in my backline though....which i dont have

As for your team, I like it. Personally, i'm not convinced by Clyne, Chadli or Mane to begin with. They are streaky players and it remains to be seen how potent they will be. Although none of them are bad picks.

        1. Daaf
          • 10 Years
          10 years, 6 months ago

          You're welcome.

A midfield enabler is someone who is cheaper than the premium picks of 8+ million, but delivers returns similar to someone who is. Players in this category include(d) Henderson, Chadli, Mane (previously), Puncheon, even Walters of Stoke. They might not be the most glamarous choices, but they will get you a points on a consistent basis.

I agree with your assesment of Clyne, but disagree about Chaldi and Mane. You are correct about their streaky nature, but part of succes is selecting the right one at the right time. I especially like Mane fixtures, and he looked really sharp against Vitesse. He is also a better goal threat than Ozil or Fabregas for that matter, so I think he is a great choice. I removed Chaldi from my team, so you won that one!

Clyne just has so much ownership, I actually wanted to select Skrtl because of his attacking threat and BPS but Clyne's ownership shifted my attention to him.

    The hypothetical GW1 AOA team

With Aguero, Sanchez and Costa not great GW1 picks, plus LIV likely to ease in Tekkers, Coutinho, Firmino, etc. and who knows which ARS mid to pick there may be a case for GW2 WC following the AOA chip. I have read the Hot Topic posts and looked at what might a GW1 team look like:

    Schmeichel
    Jagielka - Bellerin
    Hazard (c) - Ozil - Depay - Mane - Ritchie
    Rooney - Lukaku - Falcao/Remy

    0itb. Bench players all 4.0.

    Schmiechel / Butland

    Jenks / Cedric / Mert / O'Shea / Munisea

    Mata / Fab / Ramsey / Mane / Fletcher

    Aguero / Kane / Wilson

week 1 will prolly do Lukaku for Kun as a week 1 punt - bring him back for GW2

      But I think that they'll play 4-2-3-1 rather than last season's 4-4-2.

Kermorgant and Pugh drop out, and Atsu, Gradel and Ritchie play in an attacking band of three behind Wilson - possibly with Ritchie in the number ten role.

    Best 4.5 and 4.0 defender?

I have Courtouis, Hennesey, Merte, Cedric, and Huth already.

    Thanks

Staying off the FPL page til Friday now cos all the tinkering is doing me head in. Currently on this

    Schmeichel
    Ivan, Mert, Mings
    Theo (C), Ozil, Depay, Mane
    Rooney, Benteke, Pelle

    Schwarzer, Surman, Coates, Muniesa

fwiw as a Sunderland fan I think Coates will start under Dick (the reason he didn't play as many mins last year was that Gus didn't favour him. Think JOS will start alongside him, but will eventually be phased out and replaced with Kaboul)

Hazard-less as I don't feel he represents value currently as I have no desire to captain him

Couldn't make my mind up between Mane and Pelle so got both

Went Depay (was going to go Mata/Sterling) as I feel if he scores in GW1 he will be THE bandwagon

I'd love to get Cedric in there but I don't feel I can squeeze anymore out of the budget (could downgrade Ivan but he's nailed on for me - as for Chelsea defence I feel it's him or noone)

    Love to hear any opinions..

No doubt. Just staying away from the transfers page on FPL. Only so many times you can swap Mata and Depay around.

i like your team a lot, just think going azpi is better then ivan, although saying that ivan always becomes a must. i like mata over depay, but see your point on that... i do think you need some chels attacking cover as well

I'm struggling with this. Ozil will likely play in the hole, Caz sitting in behind. Caz is on set pieces which helps tremendously. I'm sticking with Ozil because I feel he will have a great year but both are great options.

Reposted from last page, any opinions welcome:

Lens is my GW1 punt - have heard good things about his preseason form, nearly 30 caps for the Netherlands and nearly 1 in 3 scoring rate for his country.

0.9% ownership and first 5 gameweek fixtures are lei, NOR, SWA, avl, TOT

worth a try I reckon, could be an early bandwagon and the perfect Agüero enabler

ye like lens, been tempted to go defoe over him though as third striker if no one comes in, could you rmt above... i think suns fixtures are class, but with advocatt there attacking threat worries me... i personally prefer to have a big mid like mata over lens and have cheap 3rd striker
