Premier League champions Leicester kick off their summer schedule with a 2-1 win at Oxford. Promoted frontmen Jordan Rhodes and Andre Gray get amongst the goals again, whilst Andros Townsend is handed a role up front as Alan Pardew trials a 3-5-2 in Palace’s draw against Vancouver Whitecaps.

Oxford United 1 Leicester 2

A goal in each half from Demarai Gray and Jeffrey Schlupp helped Leicester to victory in their first match of pre-season.

Marc Albrighton and new signing Nampalys Mendy sat out a fixture in which Claudio Ranieri, who still awaits the return of a number of internationals, ended up fielding entirely different sides by the final whistle.

Ben Chilwell stood in for Christian Fuchs at left-back as the champions came from behind. Gray, who impressed throughout the first half, equalised from a Leonardo Ulloa pass and Schlupp capped an impressive display from the right flank with the winner.

The assist came from Matty James, making his first appearance since rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament in April 2015. Tom Lawrence also recovered from the ankle problem that ruled him out of Wales’ Euro 2016 tournament to feature as a second-half sub.

New recruits Ron-Robert Zieler, Luis Hernandez and £16.6m record signing Ahmed Musa all made their debuts, with the latter’s pace catching the eye up front.

Leicester XI: First half: Schmeichel, Simpson, Huth, Morgan, Chilwell, Drinkwater, Choudhury, Gray, Mahrez, Okazaki, Ulloa.

Leicester XI: Zieler, Simpson (Moore 61), Hernandez, Huth (Wasilewski 61), Chilwell (Elder 61), James, Drinkwater (Amartey 61), Lawrence, Schlupp, Ulloa (Musa 61), Okazaki (Muskwe 61).

FC Slovacko 2 West Ham 2

Two of West Ham’s internationals returned to the fray following their summer exertions in a well-fought match against their Czech opponents.

Republic of Ireland goalkeeper Darren Randolph and Ecuadorian striker Enner Valencia both started as the Hammers cruised into a two-goal lead courtesy of Mark Noble and Ashley Fletcher goals either side of half time.

Josh Cullen and Domingos Quina provided the assists.

Slaven Bilic handed Fletcher and Gokhan Tore their first action as Hammers’ players in the second period, while new signing Sofiane Feghouli continued to show flashes of brilliance and Cheikhou Kouyate had his first half of pitch-time.

Sam Byram continued at right-back, whilst Michail Antonio – who missed the club’s brief US tour – stepped up his fitness with a second-half sub appearance.

Despite conceding twice in the last five minutes, assistant manager Nikola Jurcevic was happy with the overall work-out:

“It was a very important test for us, because we were playing a similar opponent to those who we will face in the Europa League qualification games. Now we play Rubin Kazan on Wednesday and we will mix the team again. Maybe we will have some young players at half time, and we will play with more of the experienced players too. We’ll have players like Nordtveit and Cresswell and I think in every game we play we will be better.”

West Ham XI: Randolph (Spiegel 71),Byram, Burke, Rice (Martinez 74), Page (Antonio 46), Noble (Kouyate 46), Feghouli (Tore 46), Cullen, Obiang (Browne 69), Samuelsen (Quina 46), Valencia (Fletcher 46)

Vancouver Whitecaps 2 Crystal Palace 2

Crystal Palace ended their three-date north American tour undefeated as Frazier Campbell scored twice after coming on in the second half.

The striker equalised following good work by Andros Townsend before putting the Eagles ahead from a Connor Wickham assist.

Alan Pardew opted to try out a 3-5-2 formation in the first half, handing Townsend (priced at 6.5 in Fantasy Premier League) an advanced role alongside Freddie Ladapo up front, with Zeki Fryers and Jordon Mutch out wide and Jason Puncheon given a more central midfield role.

Martin Kelly joined regular centre-back pairing Damien Delaney and Scott Dann in defence as Palace started brightly but faded as the half progressed.

The match opened up as the personnel changes mounted up after the break, and Palace were perhaps fortunate to leave Vancouver with their unbeaten record intact.

Post-match, assistant manager Keith Millen took time out to discuss the tactical tinkering:

“We tried a different shape to experiment and we only had two days to do that, so we knew it wouldn’t be perfect. There were some pleasing aspects from our point of view and there’s some stuff that we know we have to work on and get better at. If you look at the Euros this summer teams like Italy and Wales were playing that and we feel that in the Premier League this year some teams might adopt that style so we felt we needed to know that if we go to that shape that we know how to play it. It’s always good to be flexible in what you try to achieve, but whether we continue with it in the season it remains to be seen.”

Crystal Palace XI: Speroni, Kelly, Delaney (Croll 75), Dann, Mutch, Jedinak (Boateng 46), Puncheon (Kaikai 83), Lee (Bolasie 60), Fryers (Wickham 60), Townsend (Berkeley-Agyepong 83), Ladapo (Campbell 46).

Real Betis 2 Middlesbrough 1

Jordan Rhodes made it three goals in as many pre-season starts as Gaston Ramirez was afforded a late cameo ahead of his expected agreement to re-sign for Middlesbrough on a three-year deal.

Priced at 6.0 in FPL, Rhodes headed home from a Cristhian Stuani cross on a night when full-back Antonio Barragan was handed his Boro debut.

Coach Aikor Karanka tinkered with his midfield set-up in the first half, Adam Reach and Carlos de Pena playing either side of a central Stewart Downing in the default 4-2-3-1 set-up.

He then made ten changes after the break, with Adam Reach the only player to make it past the halfway mark.

Winger Albert Adomah travelled with the squad but did not play after picking up a knee injury that kept him out of the win over Doncaster. He is not expected to be on the sidelines for longer than ten days, however.

Middlesbrough XI: First half: Konstantopoulos; Barragan, McGinley, Morris, Gibson, De Roon, Reach, Clayton, Nugent, Downing, De Pena.

Middlesbrough XI: Second half: Mejias; Nsue, Baptiste, Jackson, Friend, Stuani, Reach (Ramirez 80), Forshaw, Fischer, De Sart, Rhodes.

Mansfield Town 0 Hull 1

Steve Bruce could be forgiven for viewing the England job as rather less impossible than the Hull one at the moment, as he lost yet another defender to injury.

Captain Michael Dawson was the latest to limp off, with suspected medial ligament damage, after just 29 minutes at Field Mill. With Allan McGregor, Alex Bruce and Moses Odubajo already unlikely to play again this year, things are bleak.

Tom Huddlestone, and later Andy Robertson, deputised at centre-half and Jarrod Bowen scored from a Shaun Maloney pass in a match that also involved trialist Peter Odemwingie, who hit the post during a 27-minute cameo.

Huddlestone then went off with a potential Achilles injury, and with Jake Livermore and Harry Maguire out with ankle injuries, Bruce could only call on 17 players at Mansfield.

With the season opener against Leicester just over three weeks away, the problems are already racking up for the KC outfit.

Hull XI: Kuciak (Jakupovic 46), Robertson, Davies, Huddlestone (Tymon 46), Snodgrass (Hernandez 75), Clucas, Maloney (Odemwingie 63), Diame (Olley 71), Dawson (Bowen 28), Luer, Elmohamady.

Wigan 0 Liverpool 2

Danny Ings and rising Academy star Ben Woodburn secured a third consecutive pre-season win for a dominant Liverpool on Sunday.

Lazar Markovic provided the assist for Ings with 20 minutes to go before Woodburn struck following good work by Ryan Kent.

Coach Jurgen Klopp made eight changes at half-time, with the most notable action from the first period involving Philippe Coutinho, given his first run-out since returning from Copa America duty.

The Brazilian, who hit the woodwork twice, started with compatriot Roberto Firmino and new signing Sadio Mane in a 4-3-3 formation in which Firmino played through the middle, with Mane to his right and Coutinho on the left.

Klopp had heaped praise on centre-half Joel Matip after the win at Fleetwood, only to see the Cameroon international limp off towards the end of the Wigan match.

A later scan revealed only minor bruising to his ankle – good news for a manager who is already without defenders Mamadou Sakho and Joe Gomez, who both have Achilles problems. Alberto Moreno (neck) and Brad Smith (groin) missed out with minor problems.

The proposed £4.2 million signing of Augsburg centre-half Ragnar Klavan, who was in Liverpool for a medical yesterday, will further ease Klopp’s defensive worries.

Liverpool XI: Karius, Randall, Lovren (Ilori 45), Matip, Flanagan (Wisdom 45), Stewart (Alexander-Arnold 45), Brannagan (Lucas 45), Ejaria (Kent 45), Coutinho (Woodburn 45), Firmino (Ings 45), Mane (Markovic 45).

Morecambe 1 Burnley 1

Striker Andre Gray continued his fine start to pre-season, scoring for a second consecutive match, as Burnley boss Sean Dyche gave 20 players a run-out.

The priciest of any promoted striker in FPL at a cost of 6.5, Gray finished from outside the area after being set up by a George Boyd pass in the second half.

Tom Heaton, just back in training, and new signings Nick Pope and Johann Berg Gudmundsson took no part in a match where all ten outfield players were replaced at the break as Dyche looked to build up his squad’s match fitness.

Burnley XI: First Half: Robinson, Lowton, Mee, Keane, Dummigan, Kightly, Ulvestad, Jones, Arfield, Hennings, Barnes.

Burnley XI: Second Half: Robinson, Darikwa, Tarkowski, K Long, Lafferty, Boyd, Marney, O’Neill, C Long, Gray, Jutkiewicz.

What do you think about this team?

    Foster / Heaton

    Zabaleta / Shaw / Souare / Terry / Friend

    Fabregas / Firmino / Barkley / Feghouli / Bolasie

    Aguero / Ibrahimovic / Austin

I think you need to downgrade Feghouli or Bolasie and get a 4.5 instead as bench fodder.
I also have Aguero and Zlatan up front and got Silva for your Barkley...

    Morning all, please RMT

    Foster / Jaku
    Shaw / Terry / Friend / 4m / 4m
    KDB / Haz / 9.5m / Siggy / 4.5m
    Aguero / Gray / Long

Plan to play foster every game. At least for the first 8 fixtures or so then will asses from there.

Shaw picks himself and believe that Terry will be nailed in Conte's team unless they sign a new CB. If they do I'll switch him to a WBA defender and stick Courtois in goal. Hoping boro can transfer some of their impressive championship defending into prem / favourable fixtures.

KDB was first name on team sheet and expecting Haz to have a big season after the Euros. The 9.5m slot is currently Ozil but I'll wait to hear on fitness / asses Mkhi + Martial in community shield.

Siggy is solid 4th mid in a punchy midfield. My personal preference over Fabregas (need to see where he will play) and Tadic (already have Long)

Aguero up front is Aguero. The two 6.5 strikers I'm still undecided. Ideally Benteke and Enner Valencia both move and I switch them out for these two (7.5 + 5.5)

    All thoughts welcome! Cheers

But where do I downgrade to do this ? I really like the midfield as is.

          Siggy to Townsend ?
          Terry to 5m ?
          Haz to 9.5m ?

Nice structure apart from the 4.0 defenders. I'd consider losing Hazard for a value midfield option, upgrading a striker to Costa/Michy and then using any spare cash to upgrade one/both defenders

      1. Deece
        • 13 Years
        9 years, 4 months ago

Thanks will consider that. Could definitely swap Haz with Costa (if he stays). Will have to monitor this.

I'm not sold on any of this kids under 7.5m though so this wouldn't solve the Defense problem of two 4m mids.

Do with think bolasie or Townsend are nailed with Sako / Zaha / puncheon all pushing to start also?

Why not go for Ayew over Siggy? He will play as a forward it seems. Rest seems fine. Love Gray although idk how he will get service from anybody other than Arfield.

Faces competition from Amrabat for the rwb role. Amrabat has been playing their in pre season and could be favoured in a 3-5-2 due to his surperior attacking threat.

Of the 4m defenders I think he has the best, albeit slender, chance - especially having got PL experience last season.

My advice though is steer clear of the 4m defenders. So tough to predict which one will start - there is always one. Once they emerge downgrade. If you get it wrong there is no where to turn other than downgrade elsewhere. Also if they go to 3.9 it hurts.

More or a RWB. Was behind Nyom in pecking order last season but a new manager now so who knows...

If he plays 3-5-2 he could come in but Zuniga signing and rumours of more defensive signings means it looks bleak for him

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    FPL Player List Bargains

Which players do you think have been kindly priced and could be set to far outperform their price tag?

For me Walker at 5.5m, compared to Rose's 6m looks excellent value.

I'm also pleased to see Sigurdsson and Ayew at 7.5. They put in 8.5m performances last season and can see them doing so again.

Heaton at 4.5 was unsurprising, but I expect him to outperform many of the 5m and 5.5m options. Save points and bonus will be key for the Burnley stopper.

WBA defence has been priced kindly imo. Foster at 4.5 went straight into my team, especially with those fixtures.

West Brom were good for a time last season for clean sheets. Brunt at £5m and Foster at £4.5 look great.

Fabregas if he plays advanced at £7.5m could be gold.

If Southampton play one up front and either Long or Austin get the nod they could be decent at £6.5

Lastly I think Everton are full of potential bargains if Koeman can get them playing well. Baines+Coleman are nicely priced at £5.5 and Stones at £5m is great too - especially if he goes to City.

Mirallas at £6.5 has me super tempted, especially if he looks nailed.

Shaw at 5.5 is good value.

Heaton does nothing for me. The Mannone/Butland rotation is very well priced at 9.5. I can see Butland leading the gks this season.

Heaton had an exceptional season in the PL for Burnley last time. All about saves for these cheap keepers.

Heaton and Foster at 9m looks the better combo to me.

That actually worked well until he lost his place. Butland at 4.5 was key to that though. If Butland was 4.5 I'd definitely have him in my side, but at 5m, while Foster and Heaton are 4.5m I prefer the cheaper ones. Also with Pieters there's a 4.5m route into Stoke's defence. This season with Ibra and Aguero every penny counts.

The one i'm strongly considering is good old boring Milner.

My thinking is that point could be split in Liverpools attack between Mane, Firm,Cout, Sturr,Lallana etc.

Milner at 6,5 brings great value imo if he retains penalties and get a share of set pieces. Last season he got 5g11a if i'm correct in just 2400min, thats great for 6,5m player.

True, but Liverpool under Klop can score vs anyone, in fact they were better last season vs good teams then vs smaller ones. Also, Milner loves BAPs, one assist is ussualy enough for a BP or two.

      Where to start?

Stones at 5.0m. Cheaper than Baines so can invest the .5 elsewhere early doors which is vital. Guaranteed a bandwagon if/when moves to City. Even if he doesn't, great potential for Everton CS's.

Likewise Deulofeu and Mata (assuming he joins) will be great options due to early fixtures and improvements under Koeman. Deulofeu especially allows investment elsewhere and if Lukaku ends up elsewhere and Deulofeu starts season up front...

Tekkers if he moves to Palace at 7.5 will be absolute gold. I've pencilled him in my squad for the moment assuming that move does happen. Bolasie is a cheaper option who also has potential to do damage early fixtures.

Foster at 4.5 is possibly the best bargain of the lot, purely as it allows 4.0 investment in Jaku and frees up up to 1m elsewhere. Possibility for couple 10 pointer hauls too.

Costa 9.5 is in my squad. I also have Fabregas currently, who will be absolutely essential if he nails down a #10 slot if Conte moves away from his 4-2-4. Doesn't look like it at the moment though, so I'll probably move off Fab before season starts.

Ayew and Siggy at 7.5 for the first two GWs alone. Currently I'm on Ayew, but if Swansea buy a striker I'll move to Siggy.

Longer term I think Firminho or Mane will be great picks. Liverpool without European football will be less prone to rotation and won't have same issues around tiredness.

Feghouli if he can nail a spot will be a great enabler with potential to do a Mahrez. Sticking on West Ham I think Sam Byram might be a really good shout. Personally think he's better than Antonio as a full back, but even if Bilic wants to play Antonio, there might be a spot for Byram as an inverted attacking left back. Great attacking output, high chance of BPs.

Gabriel at 5.0 might be gold. Not too keen on Arsenal's early fixutres and chance they might buy a new CB but if not, coming into my team on an early wildcard.

Lots of options this year, and the hordes of people who will put Aguero and Ibra in their side to start will need to bargain hunt. Lucky them.

Lanzini is off to the Olympics which means Feghouli is literally almost certain to start the first game or 2 (or 3?).

I expect Feghouli, Payet and Tore to take up the 3 attacking slots. When Lanzini is back, I reckon he'll replace Tore so I personally feel Feghouli is nailed.

Bilic recently said Antonio is one of the best RBs in the country, I think he sees him as an RB which is why he sold Tomkins and made more winger additions.

All good points. Plus at 5.5m means it's not a very costly gamble and one that you won;t regret much as the upside is almost too good to turn down.

However I am wary of WHU's early fixtures (che BOU mci WAT) even though I remember well that they did great job at difficult away games early last season.

By GW7 onwards I'm certainly bringing in Payet, and maybe another WHU attacker if they are going to do the business

It's a tad risky though to gamble that he's nailed. Do you really want a player who you might have to ditch 2 or 3 games in when you could well have other fires to put out early doors? Personally I'll be putting him on the one to watch list.

I think you definitely need some sort of man city attacker.

Considering Hull's issues they are likely to be the whipping boys this year, makes me worried about starting with no LEI players.

It's looking that way. They have a very, very small squad too so unless we see some investment it looks like they will really struggle.

    Thoughts on this team:

    Mandanda Jakupovic
    Azpi Baines Shaw Friend Evans
Mkhi Silva Townsend Jay Rodriguez Leko
    Aguero Costa Wilson

    Main concerns are:
    - No Arsenal Spurs or Pool
    - No Hazard
    - Owning Costa

Considering the start for Everton you may want to change Costa to Lukaku, then Baines to Funes Mori and Silva to Hazard

I have Wilson as 3rd striker but haven't seen him in many RMTs, could be a good choice

I agree with Costa over Hazard personally.

I am a huge Aguero fan! In Fantasy too of course.
I have been trying to fit booth Aguero and Ibra, but that is impossible. The rest of the team ends up too weak.

Will Aguero play for Argentina in the upcoming cup?

My team at the moment is:

    Foster

    Terry - Shaw - Friend

    Depay - Barkley - Hazard - Silva

    Aguero - Gray - Rhodes

Bench: Jakupovic - Townsend - Mori - Evans

All players play every week except maybe Jakupovic. And i think Depay will play well under Mouriniho.

Only thing Depay will be playing is Pokemon Go on the bench.

The question is whether Depay will start.

      Ibra
      Martial
      Mkhi
      Rooney

      The front four ?

        Yeah it is a gamle.
I could switch him for Ayew or Siggy and have a well balanced team.

Worth having Firmino from the beginning although his fixtures look tough ?

Will he be playing through the middle (behind the striker) for Liverpool ?

Okay so what do people reckon to this? Based on the assumption that Stones becomes a Manchester City player, and Wimmer deputises for Vertonghen until the latter returns from injury..

    Coutrois, Jakupovic
    Shaw, Friend, Wimmer, Stones, Wasilewski
    Fischer, Hazard, KDB, Firmino, Leko,
    Lukaku, Gray, Aguero

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated 🙂

    Thanks!
