Henrikh Mkhitaryan bags his first goal for United in a 4-1 loss to Borussia Dortmund. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain earns Arsenal a draw in Lens, Victor Janssen and Michy Batshuayi open their accounts for Spurs and Chelsea and Salomon Rondon nets as the Baggies see off Vitesse.

Borussia Dortmund 4 Man United 1

Henrikh Mkhitaryan netted his first goal for United as Jose Mourinho’s side were well beaten by Dortmund in Shanghai.

After featuring as a number 10 against Wigan on his debut, the Armenian international started on the left before swapping flanks with Adnan Januzaj later in the first half. Juan Mata – who was afforded the central support role behind Memphis Depay, then Marcus Rashford after the break – supplied the assist for Mkhitaryan’s consolation.

Luke Shaw and Antonio Valencia were fielded as full-backs and the latter continued to build up his fitness by playing the full 90 minutes along with new boy Eric Bailly. Mainly utilised as a centre-half by Louis van Gaal, Daley Blind partnered Ander Herrera in central midfield, allowing Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo to be handed 45 minutes each alongside Bailly in the heart of the back-four.

With a number of his first-team still yet to participate in the summer action, Mourinho was unconcerned over the result:

“At the moment, I’m not even creating a team. So many players are not here. We’re creating individuals’ form and trying to bring these players to a good condition. For the new signings and all of the players, they had a chance to play 45, 70 or 90 minutes. It’s very, very important and I can imagine it will take a long time to recover from this effort in the game. In this weather, in reality, at this stage of pre-season for them individually it’s good.”

Man United XI: Johnstone (Romero 46), Valencia (Pereira 75), Bailly, Jones (Rojo 46), Shaw, Blind (McNair 66), Herrera, Mata, Mkhitaryan (Januzaj 66), Lingard (Young 46), Depay (Rashford 46).

Lens 1 Arsenal 1

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain netted the Gunners’ equaliser in a 1-1 stalemate in Lens last night.

In his first appearance for five months, the fit-again midfielder chipped in after being teed up by fellow substitute Serge Gnabry with just nine minutes remaining.

With many of his regulars still yet to return to training due to the recent Euro 2016 tournament, Arsene Wenger’s side contained just one of last season’s guaranteed starters, left-back Nacho Monreal.

The likes of Per Mertesacker, Francis Coquelin, Mohamed Elneny, Theo Walcott and Alex Iwobi (who was handed the central support role) were also named in the XI, with Walcott seeing a goal ruled out for offside.

Given that this was their first match of the summer, it was no surprise to see Wenger make numerous changes over the course of the second period, with only Mertesacker, Coquelin and Callum Chambers afforded the full 90 minutes to step up their fitness.

Arsenal XI: Martinez (Macey 46); Debuchy (Bielik 46), Mertesacker, Chambers, Monreal (Gibbs 46); Elneny (Campbell 46), Coquelin; Walcott (Zelalem 77), Iwobi (Willock 77), Reine-Adelaide (Oxlade-Chamberlain 46), Akpom (Gnabry 46).

Vitesse 1 West Brom 2

Salomon Rondon and Callum McManaman grabbed a goal apiece as the Baggies registered a second successive victory on Thursday evening.

Tony Pulis handed Jonny Evans and Gareth McAuley their first taste of action after the duo returned to the fold a little later than usual due to their exertions for Northern Ireland in Euro 2016. The pair were afforded just over 45 minutes apiece in a match that saw the Baggies boss make ten second-half changes, with only Craig Dawson playing from start to finish.

Jonathan Leko recovered from the knock that saw him miss the previous friendly against Kidderminster Harriers to take up the left flank berth in a 4-2-3-1, with new boy Matt Phillips again starting on the opposite wing. The youngster terrorised the Vitesse defence and drew a foul that led to Rondon’s opener courtesy of a 25-yard free-kick.

McManaman also staked a claim for minutes out wide, though – emerging from the bench as a replacement for Leko early in the second period, he produced an eye-catching winner as Pulis’ side scored twice for the second match running.

West Brom XI: Foster (Myhill 45); Dawson, McAuley (Fitzwater 48), Olsson (Wilson 48), Evans (McClean 48); Fletcher (Field 48), Yacob (Gardner 48); Phillips (Roberts 48), Morrison (Berahino 48), Leko (McManaman 48); Rondon (Lambert 48).

Atus Ferlach 0 Chelsea 8

Loic Remy bagged a hat-trick, whilst new boy Michy Batshuayi and Pedro both netted twice in a behind-closed doors friendly against local Austrian outfit Atus Ferlach on Thursday.

Antonio Conte once again lined his side up in a 4-2-4 formation, with Ruben Loftus-Cheek utilised as a central striker – the youngster bagged a couple of assists, whilst Juan Cuadrado also earned an assist in an impressive second-half showing on the flank. John Obi Mikel was also in the goals thanks to a deflected effort.

Conte made six changes at the break as he afforded a number of players who joined up with the squad this week – including Pedro, Batshuayi and Cesc Fabregas – crucial pitch time.

Chelsea first half XI: Blackman, Azpilicueta, Miazga, Hector, Baba Rahman, Kenedy, Mikel, Chalobah, Atsu, Loftus-Cheek, Remy.

Chelsea second half XI: Blackman, Cuevas, Cahill, Miazga (Chalobah), Baba, Cuadrado, Fabregas, Mikel, Pedro, Loftus-Cheek (Remy), Batshuayi.

Tottenham 3 Rotherham 1

Vincent Janssen grabbed his first goal for Spurs in a behind-closed-doors friendly win over Rotherham on Thursday afternoon.

Tottenham’s summer signing was supplied by right-back Kieran Trippier to level matters after his side went behind before youngsters Shayon Harrison and Marcus Edwards (who also supplied an assist) found the net to secure a 3-1 win.

Although the club’s official website didn’t list a full starting XI, they did reveal that first-team squad players such as Victor Wanyama, Nacer Chadli, Heung-min Son and Ryan Mason were all handed a run-out as Spurs prepare to fly to Australia to face Juventus and Atletico Madrid next week.

It's good but I see two problems, especially after GW1.

              1. Benching worries among your front 8
              2. Only 3 playing defenders (you would need at least 1 more in order to rotate them effectively)

I'm going to transfer Friend to Kone (GW2), then Kone to Evans (GW3). Tadic will be dropped vs United, Ayew will be dropped vs Leicester

Stupid strategy, waste of two transfers on your defense. You'll need the transfers to jump on bandwagons where it matters (midfield and forwards)

That may work... Just be careful of planning your transfers in advance as it doesn't always go per your plan, due to injury/suspension etc.

    Toying with a 3-5-2 formation (WC GW4)

    Foster
    Baines Shaw Friend (Wasilewski Paredes)
    KDB Siggy Tadic Fabregas Bolasie
    Aguero Zlatan (Campbell)

    4-3-3 formation (currently on):

    Baines Shaw Friend Wasi (Soare)
    KDB Mahrez Siggy (Fletcher Capoue)
    Aguero Zlatan £6.5m

I suppose it comes down to whether a £6.5m striker is better than a £6/6.5m mid. As im WCing early it may be worth taking the gamble on going 3-5-2 as upgrading a striker would take a couple transfers

Who would be better options in that price range? The only better mid for the first few GWs would be Mahrez. Lots of value in the £7.5m price range. Liverpool have bad fixtures so wont be touching them

Post to all managers here who are non-members.

As there is Mini League for FFS members only I think that ML for FFS non-members is interesting idea.
There are some flaws but could be fun to compete with all managers here but with no access to those secret informations/statistics etc. and that's why open FFS ML is a bit unequal imo.
Even if someone decide to buy membership during the game or some member will join the league well that's not a disaster but I hope for your honesty guys. If you are a member please don't join. You have open ML and member ML so don't ruin our fun.
(Maybe I will check all managers who join this league by asking to mail me their FFS profile name)

Code to join FFS non-members league: 4586-92193

I will post this few more times to more managers here can read it.
I would appreciate if moderator could hulk this post and put it in hot topic. Thank you if you can help me to reach more non members here.

You can't police who joins it, but I reckon most people would abide by the honour code and stay clear if they're members.

However, although I found being a member really useful last year and re-signed up for membership straight away this year, there are plenty of non-members who do really well (LR for example!), so I wouldn't worry too much if a few members do sign up. Just boot them out if you can figure out who they are (maybe check the top 10 managers after every few games and see if they're also in the FFS Members League), kick 'em out!

I also encourage all to GET the membership because of many reasons just to mention ones above. Even if non member join this league and decide later that want to became a member thats very good. I know that some people are not afford to get membership or don't want to get it by choice and FFS non members are also community of this site and we have right to do it 😉 so I think that members should respect that and let us play our own ML. Thank you very much.

Surely Arsenal spending big on Mahrez doesn't bode well for them signing a world class striker?

    Why another midfielder!?

They need a winger of Mahrez' ilk. A ball carrier who can not only create but score aswell. At the moment they are too reliant on Alexis or Giroud to score. Wenger has always like to play with one wide playmaker, Mahrez is that with the ability to score goals aswell.

FWIW, i think the whole story is premature, it is being reported by Eurosport FR, pretty sure they also said Benzema agreed a 4 year deal with Arsenal last summer.

I agree to an extent, but with so many options in midfield I find it a little strange.

Signing Mahrez means at least one of Cazorla and Ramsey won't get a look in. That's ignoring Iwobi, Wilshire, Walcott, Ox, Cambell etc. I know Mahrez is a class above, but I still feel they need a forward more urgently.

Mahrez AND Higuain would be a dream, but you just know it won't happen.

Would rather sign Mahrez than Higuain tbh, given their age. We are stacked in the centre of midfield, not so much with actual wingers. I think Wenger sees Walcott as a striker now, if he stays.

          RW from that lot:
          Iwobi, Walcott, Ox, Ramsey, Campbell

Walcott, Ox and Campbell are bang average footballers.
Ramsey class but crap on the wing.
Iwobi quality but too young to be starting every week for us.

We definitely need another quality RW.

If anything, the Xhaka signing was the surprising one. Coquelin, Elneny, Cazorla, Ramsey, Wilshere. While Xhaka has the ability to dictate from deep, and hopefully forge a Ramsey/Arteta 13/14 partnership, that is a lot of CMs.

            1. Nabs Kebabs
              • 14 Years

Yeah i would have to agree. Coquelin and Elneny are both excellent defensively. And Cazorla/Ramsey are both class box to box players. Can't complain with the Xhaka signing but it shouldn't have been priority. A CB is even more important.

Hi...is anyone able to offer guidance on the mhki very martial debate...

Mhki is much more popular on here and in game overall....

But an oop martial getting additional point for goal and clean sheet is surely th3 better option...

    What is the general view....thanks...

Mkhi be on the other wing to Martial. With Rooney in no 10 role in all likelihood. How do you know Mkhi will be focal point of attack?

I would assume his defensive duties will be similar to Martials.

My opinion is Martial wasn't attractive as a 7-8m striker, so he's certainly not attractive as a 9.5 mid. I like him, but he's still very young, bound to be inconsistent.

I suspect Utd will start with a 4-2-3-1 with Martial on the left and Mkhi on the right of the 3. I don't think there's much to choose between them tbh. Both will have to defend and both will be running in behind Ibra. I'm probably wrong though.

There's gonna be so much transfer activity over the next few weeks, if I could resist the temptation to tinker & post rmt's I'd wait, but that's not gonna happen, because I love this s**t! Mahrez to arsenal is a given for my squad if it goes ahead. Will be very interesting to see who Leicester sign, if anyone to play on the right wing. Gray could get a chance which would be great but more likely musa starts which is also quite exciting...both players are lighting quick.

    RMT:

    Mandanda jakup
    Azpi, shaw, baines, mcauley, Smith
    Hazard, mkhi, Eriksen, tadic, mcmannaman
    Aguero, gray, rondon

I know it seems a bit light in the striking department but WBA have good opening fixtures so I reckon rondon could prove a bargain. I'm also banking on gray being this year's Austin and I can always play a 4-4-2 with that defence.

Hernandez their star man if he doesn't perform they are in trouble that was their downfall last time couldn't score

Diame el mohamady etc have to be on top form to keep them up, if they can get a decent half season I reckon they won't finish bottom but will be around 17,18th place
