Earlier this month Watford confirmed the signing of Belgian defender Christian Kabasele, who joins from Genk for a reported £5.8 million.

Arriving on a five-year deal, the centre-half was afforded an extended summer break due to Belgium’s involvement in Euro 2016 before making his debut as a second-half sub in the 3-1 friendly win over Union Berlin last Tuesday evening.

Discussing his move with the club’s official website earlier this week, the defender reckons his style of play should help him acclimatise to his new surrounds:

“I am expecting the rhythm and the level to be very high. It’s going to be difficult but I have to work hard for this. I have good speed and I’m strong in the challenge. Also with the head I scored some goals last year with Genk. I will also try to improve all my weak points to be a complete player and to help the team have a good season.”

The History

Born in Lubumbashi, Zaire, Kabasele began his career at Belgian second division side Eupen, making his debut as a 17-year-old in 2008. The following season he was part of the side that won promotion to the Belgian Pro League – in his first spell at the club, he made nine appearances in all competitions.

During the 2010/11 campaign, Kabasele was sent out on loan to fellow Pro League side Mechelen, where he played four times, scoring one goal.

In August 2011, the Belgian defender joined Bulgarian side Ludogorets Razgrad for an undisclosed fee. Although he was part of a side that won a league and cup double, registering three goals and an assist in 11 appearances, Kabasele returned to Eupen ahead of the 2012/13 campaign.

Over the next two seasons, Kabasele would cement himself as a regular, playing 41 matches and scoring six goals, impressing enough to earn himself a move to Genk in the summer of 2014.

Kabasele’s career has continued in an upward trajectory over the past two years, with an impressive seven goals and one assist accrued over 81 appearances for Genk. Standing at six foot once inch tall, the Belgian looks to have strong athleticism, and also the physical attributes in which to make the step up to the Premier League.

The 25-year-old has represented Belgium at every youth level from Under 18 upwards and notably scored five goals in 10 matches for the Under 19s. Kabasele has yet to make his senior debut, although he was a member of Marc Wilmots’ Euro 2016 squad.

The Prospects

The Watford defence was one of the most resilient budget rearguards around last term after keeping 11 clean sheets (eight at home) but, following the departure of Quique Sanchez Flores, the slate has very much been wiped clean.

Intriguingly, new boss Walter Mazzarri has started with a 3-5-2 formation in all three of the Hornets’ opening summer friendlies, though also utilised a four-man backline later in their first fixture.

Should, as expected, the Italian opt to play with three at the back, the likes of Jose Holebas, Allan Nyom and new boys Juan Camilo Zuniga and Brice Dja Djedjemay are likely to battle it out for the wing-back berths – all four are priced at 4.5 and look valid value options if they can nail down a regular role.

Frustratingly, Kabasele’s goal scoring record of 12 strikes over the last four seasons has earned him a price of 5.0 in FPL – that’s costlier than any Watford defender and on a par with Heurelho Gomes, who made more saves than any other goalkeeper last season, and also registered three penalty stops.

Granted, he is expected to command a regular role in the heart of defence as he battles it out with Craig Cathcart, Miguel Britos and Sebastian Prodl for a starting spot, though his price tag looks prohibitive – particularly if Mazzarri continues with a 3-5-2 and settles on his preferred wing-backs.

Certainly, Watford’s opening fixtures (sot, CHE, ARS, whm, MUN) will certainly also deter any initial investment in their main men, with points at either end of the pitch likely to be hard to come by in the early weeks of the season.

With some uncertainty over how Watford will line up at the back under Mazzari, FPL bosses will likely take a watching brief over the opening month of the Premier League season to evaluate the strongest route into the Hornets backline.

After that, though, a very favourable between Gameweeks 6 and 10 (bur, BOU, mid, swa, HUL) could well bring their cheap defenders onto our radars. Kabasele’s lofty valuation – relative to his backline team-mates – suggests he faces a real struggle to earn any investment unless he can make an immediate impact in and around the opposition box.

No one can perfectly predict how things will fall on GW1-4. Carefully chosen picks may not deliver big returns even if underlying stars suggest they should have done - the sample selection is too small. However, everyone must react to what happens with a view to increasing team value. The only thing we can do is provide ourselves with flexibility.
With this in mind Aguero is essential. You can replace him with anyone you want if required. For the same reasons I feel like it's essential to have either Ibra or Kane in slot no.2. If Aguero stays fit he will score heavily, and regularly so it would be impossible to remove him in such case. However if one of the premium priced players just below (Lukaku upwards) energies as the clear favourite it's simple enough to "downgrade" from or Ibra or Kane, but more problematic to upgrade if it goes that way.
It's possible to pick another premium striker but that would seem to cut too far into the defensive / midfielder budget so a cheaper option of 6.5 makes sense - you may not pick the right one but you'll be in the right ballpark.

All in all the striker choice is clear.

    1) Aguero
    2) Ibra / Kane
    3) Carroll / Gray / Long

Other choices may (or I should say will) accrue more points, but it's hard to make an argument that this isn't the most pragmatic approach.

      I'm currently on Aguero/Ibra and a 4.5 bench fodder.

This theory comes with the assumption that your front-line will fail. My assumption is that Aguero is essential, Ibra or Kane combo with the essential one is rare, and that Lukaku will do well enough (or even better) to be the right 2nd choice striker with the fixtures he's got ahead.

You mentioned Lukaku above, but haven't afterwards...Sorry if I didn't get it right, but your opinion is that Lukaku is an okay 2nd striker or not? (if he is, I agree completely)

    Team A or Hazard-less team B??

    Foster, Jakupovic
    Terry, Morgan, Shaw, Mee, Friend
    Hazard, Mkhi, Ayew, Fischer, Feghouli
    Aguero, Lukaku, Long

    Team B:
    Foster, Jakupovic
    Azp, Morgan, Shaw, Mee, Friend
    Fab, Mkhi, Ayew, Tadic, Feghouli
    Aguero, Lukaku, Negredo (nailed?)

Why aren't people here having Yaya Toure in their teams?
He has scored over 130 points for every season he's been in FPL.
I like him over siggy/ayew who are hit and miss when compared to Toure.
    any comments?

When je scored so many points, he was playing AM and was heavily involved in every attack. Last year he was moved back to DM position and his influence in team slowly got smaller and smaller. I don't think this season he is even gonna be nailed on. And if he plays, he will be far away from goal. He might bang in a long shot or two, but that is to little for a price tag. Other DMs are all prized at least 1,5 mio under him.

Never make the mistake that FPL returns for a specific player can go on for ever. Get players who are on the way up, or at least are up there already and not on the way down.

Anyone going without a 4.5 player as their 5th mid? I'm trying to fit in a front line of Kun Wilson & Gray. What other mids are you considering?
I have KDB, Hazzy Tadic nailed on for me so far. Hoping Gaston Ramirez is at 5.5 and then have 6.5 ITB for Townsend.

Looking for second opinions on this for a first draft... be ruthless with it, tear it absolute shreds if you must. Think I'm getting close.

    This is my GW1 team.

    Courtois (Jakupovic)
    Shaw, Souare, Friend, (Wasilewski, Wimmer)
    KDB, Mkhitaryan, Firmino, Fischer (Leko)
    Lukaku, Aguero, Gray

Looking to bring in an Arsenal defender when it becomes apparent who Kosielny's partner is.
Wimmer will be Stones instead if he moves to Man City, possibly even if he doesn't.
Really looking for suggestions for better alternatives to Fischer, any ideas?

Apologies for the delay on this but I finally have some time to write up the midfielder and forward price challenge results. Big thanks to Greenwindmill for making all the effort to collect the entries and determine all the results (he even wrote basically everything below this point)

Midfielders - Two posters got 10 out of 16 predictions correct: MEMPHISDEPAY7 and CASPER86.

A few players are undervalued by FPL based on these results:
Most notably Firmino at 8.5 (9.1 by FFS predictions) but also Redmond, Mata, Ozil and Willian are all 0.5 below the FFS average.

On the flip side Nolito is 0.7 more expensive than expected and Mane is 0.5 more. Guessing they won't be cropping up in many GW1 RMTs.

Overall, the prices are fractionally cheaper than predicted (average price of £8.72m vs a predicted £8.86m)

Forwards - Ayew Serious won this one with 11 out of 20 correct. BOUNCEBACKABILITY next best with 10 out of 20.

    Undervalued forwards:
    Carroll (6.5 vs a predicted 7.4)
    Long (6.5 vs a predicted 7.3)
    Costa (9.5 vs a predicted 10.1)
    Benteke (7.5 vs a predicted 8.0)

    Overvalued forwards:
Martial (9.5 vs a predicted 9.0) This is probably reflected in his 'OOP' status though
    Vardy (10.0 vs a predicted 9.0)

Overall, the prices are fractionally cheaper than predicted (average price of £8.81m vs a predicted £8.65m)

Two posters managed 18 out of 36 predictions in total across both midfielders and forwards: CASPER86 and BOUNCEBACKABILITY.

If you'd like to check your own predictions:

        I hope not!

What does everyone think of Feghouli? Looks good in pre-season.

        My team so far:-
        Foster/Heaton
        Shaw/Walker/Williams/Pieters/Friend
        Mahrez/Mkhitaryan/Townsend/Feghouli/Gradel
        Agüero/Costa/Wilson

Not sure about my midfield! Have 0.5 in the bank - should I upgrade Mahrez or Mkhitaryan to Hazard/DeBruyne? Any suggestions would be great!

Go with 5-4-1 formation in GW1 if you think all 10 matches will end 0:0 😉

For my last midfield slot, I have to decide between Mirallas, Deulofeu and Feghouli.
For my striker slot, I have to decide between Austin, Gray and Negredo.

Today has cleared that up 😆 😉

Long not an option? or Townsend?

Austin > Long easily for me. Not too interested in Townsend.

I like Long more as a player actually. But we'll see who will be first choice. Townsend playing up front so far for Palace could be golden at that price and with those fixtures. I'm worried about Feghouli's game time actually. Mirallas could be great if they sell Lukaku and he plays up top

The quality of players playing with Austin is key.

He could get a lot of chances, a lot more than at QPR.

One of Eve lads + Austin (if we'll know he's assured of starting matches) imo

Yes they did. But nothing is certain yet under new manager... Some are saying they will play with 2

Austin is an easy one from me out of those TBH. First comment I am not so sure and think I will pass on them all until I know who will actually be playing from Everton.

Unless your looking to wildcard early its probably best to leave 4.0 m defenders alone until things become more clear.

    Hi guys.

Would you A - Have Hazard in your team but 4.5 Keeper + 4.0 Keeper.
Or B - Have Mkhtyrian and two 4.5 keepers?

      A. Jakupovic a good option IMO. Though Heaton and Foster rotate almost perfectly

Starting to look at Ibe as a 5.5 mid. If he can get goals/assists like he did at Derby its very tempting. Should be playing every week etc. and is probably a better bet than the likes of Fischer.

If Feghouli gets going though its probably a no brainer.
